Living
in a city that too Metropolitan city, has its distinct advantages ~ City
suburbs are perhaps different ! nearer GST We have this unique
place which was under water for 6 months making Thirumangai Azhwar
wait ! – and again was under floods in
Dec 2015 .. .. The
temple area, is known for its leather tanneries on the way and quarries too –
there was a report in newspapers that
the construction debris from the Chennai Metro Rail’s sites were dumped illegally on the waterbed in a quarry at
Thiruneermalai along the Chennai Bypass Road. The Thiruneermalai quarry is one
of the few structures in the city that still holds a good amount of
water.

The film opens with Chiranjeevi being chased and caught by a group of policemen, but he escapes. Meanwhile, a young soldier Raghu returns to his village, which is known for frequent thefts and murders perpetrated by the mysterious "One-Eyed Man" Chiranjeevi and his gang of thieves. Raghu soon meets Chiranjeevi; the two were once college roommates, but they had since separated.
Thiruneermalai has a beautiful pushkarini and the divyadesam temple is in two parts – one at the ground level and the other atop a small hill. The sannathi of Neervannar is at the base along with his consort Animamalar Thayar and sannathies of Kalyana Ramar and Andal. As one ascends 300 odd steps, one can have great darshan of Lord Ranganathar (in reclining posture); Thiruvikramar; Lord Narasimha (in sitting posture) - “நின்றானிருந்தான் கிடந்தான் நடந்தாற்கிடம் மாமலையாவது நீர்மலையே” – in the words of Thirumangai Azhwar.

சூழப்பட்டு நல்ல தீர்த்தங்களையுடைய தடாகங்களாலே விளங்குகின்ற இடமான மாமலை, சிறந்த மலையான
திருநீர்மலையாம்; என்கிறார் திருமங்கை மன்னன்.
திருநீர்மலை
ஒரு அற்புத திவ்யதேசம். பெரிய குளம் அருகே அமைந்துள்ள கோவிலும், மலைமேல்
மேலும் சன்னதிகளும் அமைந்துள்ளன. சிறியமலை மேலேறிச் செல்ல படிக்கட்டுகள்
வசதியாக இருக்கின்றன. அடிவாரக் கோவிலில் உள்ள மூலவர் நீலமுகில் வண்ணன், நின்ற திருக்கோலத்தில்,
கிழக்கு நோக்கிச் சேவை சாதிக்கிறார். தாயார் அணிமாமலர் மங்கை, தனிக்கோவில் நாச்சியாராக
எழுந்தருளியிருக்கிறார். மலைமேல் சாந்த நரசிம்மன், வீற்றிருந்த திருக்கோலத்தில், கிழக்கு
நோக்கியும், ரங்கநாதன், மாணிக்க சயனமாகத் தெற்கு நோக்கியும், திருவிக்கிரமன் நின்ற
திருக்கோலமாகக், கிழக்கு நோக்கியும் சேவை சாதிக்கிறார்கள். ஸ்தலாதிபதியான
திரு நீர்வண்ணப்பெருமாளுக்கு 10 நாள் ப்ரஹ்மோத்சவம் பங்குனியில் நடைபெறுகிறது. தவிர ஸ்ரீரங்கநாதருக்கும் ப்ரஹ்மோத்சவம் உண்டு
Those of us who are fortunate to have darshan of this most beautiful Lord Neervannar – (moolavar is majestic Thiruvenkadamudaiyan Himself) – are certain to lose themselves upon that wonderful darshan of Lord Neervannar and surrender ourselves totally at His lotus feet seeing His divine darshan.
Miles away, Gretna Green – is touted as a place where many eloping couples get married. This is a village in the south of Scotland near the mouth of river Esk. In the yores of England, person could not marry without parental consent until age of 21, following Act of Parliament – Lord Hardwicke’s Marriage Act. The Scots were more lenient allowing marriages without such permission at 16 and that made young couples elope to Gretna green, where the wedding was performed by blacksmith at roadside toll houses. These marriages were legal.
Thiruneermalai the abode of Lord Ranganatha on a small hill was an attractive location for many movies and typically loving couples (a rich girl and a rustic boy) elope to this temple to get married before the chasing group can near them.
The description in 2nd para is that of movie Ranuva Veeran directed by S. P. Muthuraman, starring Rajinikanth, Sridevi and Chiranjeevi released in 1981. The film was later dubbed in Hindi as Zulm Ki Zanjeer Despite starring two popular heroes from Tamil and Telugu cinema, Ranuva Veeran did not do well commercially.
