beau drawing at Sri Ekambareswarar Thirukkovil, Kanchipuram

Important pre-script :  The land of Maha Bharat is a Punniya bhoomi Karma bhoomi, land of Temples land where Azhwars & Nayanmars precepted Bakthi literature.  At Temples, we worship the Supreme Lord, marvel the architectural wonders of Pillars, top tiers, Gopurams, Garba gruha and more, we see beautiful decoration of fragrant flowers, ornate ornaments, devotional chantings and more

Yet this is a post on a transient black board we see some messages of Temple festivals written on Notice Board, some neat, some clumsy anyway they serve a very limited purpose and stand for a short time then they would be erased physically and from the memories of all !!

This is a story of a Notice Board drawing by Sree Ramana Kalaikoodam, Kanchipuram, that was so impressive I had photographed this in Apr 2012 suddenly it surfaced making it the subject matter of this post.

Couple of decades ago, there lived in Triplicane a great Sivaji fan,  Painter Raghavan, who would beautifully draw / write on the black boards signage in Street, at Vanamamalai Mutt, for SYMA at TP Koil II lane – a good artist, his works were appreciated but he lived and died in abject poverty !!

The foregoing is from the novel ‘Sivakamiyin Sabatham’ of Kalki.

Ekambareswarar Temple is a very big temple, associated with the five elements, the Pancha Bhoota Stalas, and specifically the element of earth, or Prithvi. Shiva is worshiped as Ekambareswarar or Ekambaranathar or Rajalingeswaram, and is represented by the lingam as Prithvi lingam. His consort Parvati is depicted as Elavarkuzhali. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Thevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. This vast temple is one of the most ancient in India having been in existence since at least 600 CE.   Adi Shankara,   got Kanchipuram remodelled along with expansion of this temple along with Kamakshi Amman temple and Varadaraja Perumal Temple with the help of local rulers. There are inscriptions dated 1532 CE (record 544 of 1919) indicating the gift of number of villages made by Achutaraya. The Vijayanagar kings, during the 15th century, also made lot of contributions to the temple.

The meaning of the Thevara pasuram mentioned at the start :

Now to the subject matter – in 2012 when I visited this temple on way to my native village Dusi Mamandur, had taken a photo the announcement board – now looking back am mesmerized to see that the artist has achieved something quite remarkable with what appears to be ordinary coloured chalk on a blackboard.

What a lovely work ! – how much time has this artist spent on presenting something which perhaps may stand for 3 or 4 days only.  The entire composition draws the eye naturally towards the main shrine. The road, rows of devotees, lamps and decorations all converge beautifully at the central vahana. Perspective is one of the hardest things to get right in freehand drawing, and here it has been handled confidently.

As you observe again, the artist hasn't just drawn a vehicle. He has conveyed the feeling of a Brahmotsavam at night:

       fireworks overhead,

       rows of devotees,

       deepams,

       the illuminated mantapam,

       the secondary shrine following behind,

       decorative arches.

For anyone who has attended such a procession, the drawing immediately evokes the experience. If you zoom in, many of the devotees are represented by just a handful of chalk strokes. Yet each figure appears to be carrying a torch or standing in reverence. That is the mark of someone who understands what details matter and what can be left to the viewer's imagination. Instead of filling every surface with colour, the bright yellows, reds, whites and blues are reserved for the deity and the mandapam. Consequently, the eye is immediately drawn to the divine centre of the composition.

This was almost certainly drawn by someone who has all details of the procession but more than that has so much of devotion at his heart too.  The proportions of the mandapam, the decorations, the sequence of accompanying shrines, the placement of the fireworks—these are not generic festival motifs. They suggest familiarity with the actual utsavam.

It is an Oxymoron that through a mundane work of ephemeral, he has communicated something that would be etched in memory forever !!!   The date 6-4-2012 is integrated into the composition rather than simply written as information. It becomes part of the artwork itself, anchoring the drawing to a specific festival. For someone studying temple traditions years later, that is invaluable. To me, this is not merely a notice board—it is a piece of folk temple art, created with devotion, intended to exist briefly, and fortunately captured by me !!

From  artistic point of view some Qs like whether it is freehand, or sketched lightly first, how many hours it would have taken and whether he continues to make such boards even today !!  His mobile no. 9842337665 is available on the photo – I messaged him sending the photo and stating my intention to write a post – he simply responded – ‘OK’ !!

We naturally admire the deity, the archakas, the veda/arulicheyal ghoshti, Othuvaars,  the musicians, and the volunteers. But there are also artists who decorate the streets, paint signboards, draw kolams, prepare floral arrangements, and create temporary works like this blackboard. Their contribution is devotional in its own right, yet it rarely receives recognition.   This post may not become viral, it may not reach to a larger audience but I would be much happier, if someone reading this takes time to appreciate the artist in person.

~ Elephant and Ekambareswarar Raja gopuram

Elephants are big, mammoth and attractive …. .. a decade or so ago ! in one of my sojourns to my native Dusi Mamandur – stopped mid-afternoon at Sri Ekambareswarar temple.

People know for sure, the towering Rajagopuram – yet in the particular angle it was photographed, the Temple While elephant vahanam seemingly dwarfed the massive gopuram !! (some vehicles and unwanted objects removed with AI help – otherwise the picture is original !) – remember Thirumoolar paadal !!

The Ekambareswarar Thirukkovil is a very famous landmark of  Kanchipuram,  a massive 25-acre Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. As one of the five sacred Pancha Bhoota Stalas, it represents the element of Earth.  The  iconic 57-meter Raja Gopuram (entrance tower) built by Krishnadevaraya would be visible right from the moment you cross Kanchi Railway station and from many other parts of Kachi.  The Temple is quoted in the verses of Thirunavukkarasar.

Well, the elephant need not be big to be attractive or capturing attention.  The Borneo Pygmy elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) is the smallest subspecies of Asian elephant on Earth and is endemic to the island of Borneo. Known for their gentle temperament and unique, compact appearance, these elephants are heavily concentrated in the Malaysian state of Sabah. Recently, they have gained widespread attention online after a highly circulated baby elephant image sparked viral trends. However, many viral images are actually AI-generated.

Couple of months ago, the internet's latest obsession, the viral 'Borneo Pygmy elephant' meme, found an unexpected role in a public awareness campaign, with Delhi Police using the trend to remind citizens about the importance of following traffic rules. In a  post shared on its official Instagram account, the Delhi Police featured an image of a Borneo Pygmy elephant, the adorable "chubby baby elephant" at the centre of a global social media craze. The eye-catching visual was paired with a direct road safety message aimed at capturing the attention of users scrolling through their feeds. The text on the image read, "Aap mujhe itna attention de hi rhe ho toh aap ye message bhi sun lo ki traffic signal follow karna aur helmet & seatbelt lagana zaruri h. Bye bye.""Meme skip ho jayega toh kuch nahi hoga. Safety skip hui toh problem ho sakti hai," the caption reads.

It highlights Safety -   that temporary entertainment is trivial compared to personal safety, which can have life-altering consequences.

Interesting !

Thirukachi Devathi Rajar - cattle horn view !!

Emperuman has thiruveethi purappadu providing darshan to devotees at their place !   We feel very happy and fulfilled in having His darshan, even from a distance.

Here is darshan of Sri Devathirajar on the streets of Kanchipuram on day 6 of His Brahmothsavam, seen through the horn of a bull.

Cattle are attractive, more so with big curved horns.  Horns continuously grow throughout the cattle's life and reflect nutritional status—weak or brittle horns may indicate deficiency.

Pictured here is Sri Devapperumal (Thirukachi Varadharaja Perumal) through a framing angle of horns creating a natural arch around the vahanam at a distance – trying to present the composition in a symbolic, ceremonial and visually appealing.

We all know of  Bird's-eye view: an elevated perspective as if observing from a bird in flight.  The opposite to that is : Worm's-eye view: from low to the ground looking upward.   Other common camera angles include eye-level (parallel to subject), high angle (less extreme than bird's-eye), low angle (less extreme than worm's-eye), and Dutch tilt/oblique angle (tilted camera creating instability).

Tried here is : "Seeing through bull horns"  photography composition where you position the camera low, looking up through the gap between a bull's curved horns

Interesting

Sri Varadha Rajar Thiruther 2026

Thiruvallikkeni Sri Varadha Rajar  Thiruther 2026

Thiruther is a grandeur occasion ~ thousands of devotees assemble at Kanchipuram to have a glimpse of Sri Devathi Rajan on thiruther.

Today, 3.6.2026   is day 7 of Sri Varadharajar   Brahmothsavam – and it was thiruther.  At Thiruvallikkeni  the grand big  Thiruther [chariot] rolls twice – one for Sri Parthasarathi and again for Sri Thelliya singar ….. one will realise its grandeur that of rolling juggernaut, if one were to stand near as the 8 or 9 feet wheel rotates by.  Thiruther is a grand occasion of togetherness of people.  Today it was siriya thiruther for Sri Varadhar ~ at Kanchi the events are much bigger – have heard till a decade or so ago, it would take days for the thiruther to return and it would be a holiday in Kanchi district on the occasion.

Chariots are impressive  - On screen,  we have seen many – one got enamoured by the scene of Arjuna wading through the forces in Mahabaratha  - those chariots were quite attractive.  Ratha is not only fleet-footed mode during war, it symbolizes energy and zeal to move forward.  It was on the chariot steered by Lord Krishna, Geethopadesam occurred to Arjuna, the mighty warrior.  The rath itself according to legend was given by Agni.  The battle formation was unconceivably bigger ~ by some accounts an Akshauhini is described as a formation consisting of 21870 chariots, 21870 elephants, 65160 cavalry and more than a lakh of infantry.

In Greek mythology, Chariots were not just a means of transportation; they were symbolic and played a significant role in various myths and legends. Chariots were often associated with deities, notably those connected with the sky, sun, and moon, and were drawn by mythical creatures or powerful animals.

The word "chariot" comes from the Latin term carrus through French chariot, a loanword from Gaulish karros. In ancient Rome a biga described a chariot requiring two horses, a triga three, and a quadriga four. In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Helios is the god who personifies the Sun.   Helios is often depicted in art with a radiant crown and driving a horse-drawn chariot through the sky. He was a guardian of oaths and also the god of sight.   The Roman Emperor Julian made Helios the central divinity of his short-lived revival of traditional Roman religious practices in the 4th century AD.

Phaethon is the son of Helios who, out of a desire to have his parentage confirmed, travels to the Sun god's palace in the east. He is recognised by his father and  he asks for the privilege of driving his father’s  chariot for a single day. Despite Helios' fervent warnings and attempts to dissuade him, counting the numerous dangers he would face in his celestial journey and reminding Phaethon that only he can control the horses, the boy is not dissuaded and does not change his mind. He is then allowed to take the chariot's reins; his ride is disastrous, as he cannot keep a firm grip on the horses. As a result, he drives the chariot too close to the Earth, burning it, and too far from it, freezing it.

There have always been evidences that our ancestors were advanced and lived a sophisticated yet contented life .. .. the slow unearthing of evidence only confirms their superiority ..

Here are some photos of Sri Varadhar purappadu to thiruther through Kairavini kulakkarai  and thiruther purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni in the evening.

Sri Varadharajar Sesha vahana purappadu 2026

Sri Varadharajar Sesha vahana purappadu 2026

Sri Devathi Rajar Brahmothsavam is grandly being conducted at Perumal Kovil (Thirukachi aka Kanchipuram).  Today 31.5.2026 is day 4 of the uthsavam – Sesha vahanam.

Kanchipuram, is Saptapuri, one of the  seven holiest cities, - mokshapuri, the city of  salvation. One of the country’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, Kanchipuram was called the city of a thousand temples, and it has more than a hundred even today. While it will take an eternity to explore all of Kanchi’s temples we would immediately tend to associate the city with Pallava kings.

The Pallava dynasty existed from 275 CE to 897 CE, ruling a significant portion of southern India also known as Tondaimandalam. They gained prominence after the downfall of the Satavahana dynasty.   Most of the history that we read in schools was about   the reign of Mahendravarman I (600–630 CE) and Narasimhavarman I (630–668 CE).  During their reign, they remained in constant conflict with both the Chalukyas of Badami in the north, and the Tamil kingdoms of Chola and Pandyas in the south. The Pallavas were finally defeated by the Chola ruler Aditya I in the 9th century CE.

The Pallavas are famous for  their patronage of architecture, the finest example being the Shore Temple, and grand architectural masterpieces at Mamallapuram. Kancheepuram served as the capital of the Pallava kingdom. The dynasty left behind magnificent sculptures and temples, and are recognised to have established the foundations of medieval South Indian architecture. They developed the Pallava script, from which Grantha ultimately took form. This script eventually gave rise to several other Southeast Asian scripts such Khmer. The Chinese traveller Xuanzang visited Kanchipuram during Pallava rule and extolled their  rule.

Of the many temples of Kanchi, the  majestic Vaikunta Perumal Temple dedicated to  Sriman Narayana, is believed to have been built by the Pallava king Nandivarman II. What’s unusual about this temple is that there are three sanctums one on top of the other. Lord Vishnu is depicted in seated, reclining and standing postures in the lowest, middle and upper levels respectively.  The central shrine is surrounded by a passage whose walls are covered with incredible relief panels and inscriptions about the Pallava dynasty until the ascent of Nandivarman II to the throne, including the empire’s ongoing conflict with their rivals, the Chalukyas.

Moving away from the History that was read in school books, here is something extracted from the book “Pallavas “ by G Jouveau – Dubreuil, Doctor of Univ of Paris,  Professor, College, Pondicherry, published in 1917 priced at Rs.2/-  .. .. …

The record found at Mayidavou is written in Prakrit.  There are also 2 other records of same kind – but the other Pallava records are in Sanskrit.  One of these two records that of Hirahadagalli is dated in the 8th year of tehr eign of Sivaskanda varman, King of Kanchi, who is of the Pallava dynasty and Bharadvaja gotra and who by this document confirms a gift made by his father Bappa-deva.

The Penugonda plates (GO no. 920, 4.8.1914) mention two Pallava kings Simhavarman and Skandavarman, but the age of these plates is not known.  Then there is the authentic Vayalur inscription which is engraved on a cubical pillar of the Pallava style and runs round it in the form of a helix.  It begins with the well known series of names : Brahma, Angiras, Brihaspati, Samyu, Bharadwaja, Drona, Asvathaman, Pallava, Asoka, Harigupta, Aryavarman and then two or 3 names hardly legible and then Kalinda, Byamalla, Ekamalla .. .. after this last name begins a series of 36 names.

The last few names are too well known to us : Nandivarman, Simhavarman, Mahendravarman, Narasimha varman, Parameswara varman. The existence of a King called Virakurcha is proved by the plate discovered at Darsi.  The existence of a king by name Skandasishya is established by the Tirukkalukkunram inscription.

Dr Fleet has assigned the date of about 500A.D to the Penugonda plates, which is the date we give to (26) Skandavarman, son of (25) Simhavarman who crowned King Madhava II alias Simhavarman.  The name Simhavarman given to a king of the Western Ganga dynasty shows that Aryavarman, who had been crowned by the Pallava king had married his daughter and his son Madhava II received the name of his grandfather, the pallava king Simhavarman.    The Vayalar inscription enables us to believe that Penugonda plates belong to 500 A.D.

The Velurpalaiyam plates say of Simhavishnu – he quickly seized the country of Cholas embellishd by the daughter of Kavira [ie., the river Kaveri] whose ornaments are the forests of paddy (fields) and where (are found) brilliant groves of areca (palms).  From this it would appear that the Chola country did not belong to the Pallavas before Simhavishnu and it was he who conquered it.

Moving away from the heavy dose of history, Sri Varadharajar uthsavam is on at Thiruvallikkeni too following Thirukachi and today is day 4 – there was Sesha vahana purappadu in the evening in which it was Nanmukhan thiruvanthathi of Thirumazhisai azhwar.
