Ever heard of "Shrotriem"  !  -   a term rooted in traditional land grants, typically involving the transfer of land revenue rights  as a form of honor or reward.  

Chennai is still reeling under hot and humid conditions.  After a hot day with temperatures inching close to 40°C, city residents found little relief at night, as warm early morning hours felt like an extension of a summer afternoon.  Meteorologists attribute the sweaty days and nights to dry weather and high-altitude cloud cover. This pattern is expected to continue over the next few days, although there are expectations of  isolated evening thunderstorms that would bring brief relief.  

Almost a century ago - the case of V. Seethaya And Others v. P. Subramanya Somayajulu And Another adjudicated by the Privy Council on February 14, 1929,  stood  as a significant judicial decision in the realm of land revenue laws and jurisdictional authority. It was a  consolidated appeal arising  from eleven suits of ejectment primarily questioning the jurisdiction of civil courts over revenue courts in matters pertaining to land grants.  

The history of Chennapatnam aka Madras (Chennai) is traced back to Aug  1639 when East India Company bought a piece of land from the ruling Nayaks and built the Fort, much less than its present size.   Much prior existed our Thiruvallikkeni [twisted as Triplicane]  which in some places is described as ‘shrotriem’ which according to Wilson's Glossary, means "a grant of lands or a village held at favourable rate, properly an assignment of land or revenue to a Brahmin learned in the Vedas but latterly applied to similar assignments to native Servants of Government, Civil or Military, as a reward for past services.  

Central to the dispute cited in that 1929 case  was the interpretation of the Madras Estates Land Act, 1908, specifically Section 189, which delineates the exclusive jurisdiction of revenue courts in certain land-related suits. The appellants contested this provision, leading to protracted litigation spanning over a decade. The parties involved included landholders, revenue officers, and Brahmin grantees, with the crux of the matter focusing on the nature of the original land grant and its implications on jurisdiction.  A pivotal component was the interpretation of "shrotriem," traditionally understood as a revenue assignment to Brahmins or government servants. However, the Council posited that in this context, the term, especially as reiterated in the grant’s final recital, unambiguously referred to revenue rights alone.   

 

Another hot day in Chennai ….  Whether it is hot or cold, for us it is always the Lotus Feet of Sriman Narayana which is the shelter.  At Thiruvallikkeni, the Kodai uthsavam is on and today  is day 5 for Sri Parthasarathi.  Today Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman dazzled with Pandiyan kondai and spectre.  -  செங்கோலுடைய திருவரங்க செல்வனார் போன்றே சாற்றுப்படி.  Being the 5^th day  - it was Nammalwar’s Thiruvirutham in the goshti.  Swami Nammazhwar starts this divyaprabandham stating:

 

பொய் நின்ற ஞானமும்  பொல்லா ஒழுக்கும்  அழுக்குடம்பும்,

இந்நின்ற நீர்மை இனியாமுறாமை, உயிரளிப்பான்

எந்நின்றயோனியுமாய்ப் பிறந்தாயிமையோர் தலைவா

மெய்நின்று கேட்டருளாய்,  அடியேன்செய்யும் விண்ணப்பமே.

 

Though one bestowed with great knowledge and more importantly the chosen one by Emperuman, Nammalwar still expresses his humility stating that we possess knowledge which is of no good, we possess no discipline, we are born in womb and are dirty -  and for protecting souls like us, the greatest Lord of Celestials takes birth to guide us and lead us to salvation.  Azhwar prays to Lord seeking His attention and beseeching grant that one may not be born again in state of faulty knowledge, wicked actions and filth-ridden body.  The posterity knows that Azhwar was granted all wishes and was taken along by Perumal – for us the path is certain and easy – follow what Azhwar did and surrender to the Lotus feet of Emperuman.

During this Uthsavam, Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman everyday adorns different kireedams.  Today it was ‘Rajamudi kondai’ – Emperuman adorning this for the first time.

எம்பெருமானை நினைத்த மாத்திரத்திலே, அவனது - தேஜஸ்ஸும், பராக்ரமமும், செல்வங்களும்,  அழகிய ரூபமும், குற்றமற்ற நற்குலமும் மற்றுமுள்ள நன்மைகளும், நம்மை நலம்புரிந்து வந்தடையும். 

 

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, it is ‘kodai Uthsavam’ ~ though associated as a festivity in summer – it actually is towards the end of summer season – in the Tamil month of Aani.  It usually rains too during this period.  Today 28.6.2025  is day 3 of Kodai Uthsavam. 

Summer is the hottest of the four temperate seasons -  the days are longer and the nights are shortert, with day-length decreasing as the season progresses after the solstice.  In Gustav Holst’s “The Planets,” a sweeping, seven-part composition inspired by Earth’s neighbors in the solar system, the last movement the orchestra is joined by a wordless female chorus. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its supposed astrological character.  

The third in the structure is ‘Mercury’  -    and is marked vivace throughout.  Mercury is a mere activity whose character is not defined".  This movement, the last of the seven to be written, contains Holst's first experiments with bitonality.   It is the shortest of the seven movements, typically taking between 3+1⁄2 and 4 minutes in performance.  

In this context, early summer heatwaves in the Northern Hemisphere have been fierce. Just as Central America and the southwestern and eastern United States saw blasts of heat in May and June, temperatures also soared in the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa. The series of heat waves has contributed to large numbers of deaths, strained power grids, and challenged meteorological records.  

Heat domes put the brakes on convection and suppress clouds and precipitation. This allows sunlight to reach Earth’s surface relatively unhindered and further elevate air temperatures. As a result of the June heat dome, people in the Midwest and Northeast saw a string of days with sweltering temperatures that tied or broke calendar-day records in several states.  Extreme heat doesn’t just make people uncomfortable. It can have serious health consequences, particularly for older people.  

Heat waves like the June event have become more frequent in the United States in recent decades, according to researchers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Using a NASA modeling system called MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications-2) to analyze long-term trends, the NASA team calculated that summer heat waves in the U.S. roughly doubled in number between 1980 and 2023, increasing from an average of two to four per month. NASA have pointed out that the frequency and intensity of heatwaves have increased in recent decades because of the rising concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. They expect these increases to continue in the future.  

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, it was day 3 of Kodai uthsavam – at 5.00  pm, Sri Parthasarathi Perumal and ubaya nachimar in separate kedayam Perumal had siriya mada veethi purappadu, Venkatrangam Street, Gate aam, Vasantha uthsava bungalow, Thiruvaradhanam, Poocharru there and returned to Temple;  in the purappadu it was Moonram thiruvanthathi of Sri Peyalwar.

Sri U Ve Kovil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Periyappangar (Doddachar) Swami Thirunakshathiram celebrations at Thiruvallikkeni  2025 

Sri Vaishnava Sampradhayam places great emphasis on following the path shown by Acharyan.  Our  Sampradhayam is proud of the rich lineage of greatest of Acharyas who have guided us towards salvation.  One can easily discern from the  Great ‘Thaniyan’ of Swami Koorathazhwaan that we observe daily –  

“Lakshminatha samarambaam, Nathayamuna madhyamam – Asmath Achaarya paryanthaam, vanthe Guru parambaram”.

 For a  Srivaishnavaite, Acharyar leads and guides one to ultimate  Sriman Narayana. My Acharyar  is Cholasimhapuram Doddayachaaryar (presently Sri U. Ve. Kovil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Yoga Nrusimhan  Swamy).   We the Sishyas of Swami belong to the lineage, which emanated from the Holy feet of Sri Periya Perumal, Periya Pirattiar, Senai Muthalvar, Nammazhwar, Naathamunigal, Uyyakkondar, Manakkal Nambigal, Aalavanthar, Periya Nambi, Emperumaanar, Koorathazhwar, Mudaliandan, Embaar, Battar, Nanjeeyar, Nampillai,  Vadakku Thiruveethipillai, Pillai Logachariyar, Thiruvoimozhipillai, Maanavala Maamunigal, Vaanamamalai Jeeyar to  Doddacharyar (of whose lineage we have the present head – Sri Yoga Narasimha Swami).

22.6.2025 அன்று ஸ்ரீ கோயில் கந்தாடை சண்ட  மாருதம் பெரியப்பங்கார் ஸ்வாமி  திருநக்ஷத்திரம் மற்றும் ஸ்ரீ சிங்கராச்சார் ஸ்வாமியின்   திருநக்ஷத்திர வைபவமும் அவரது சிஷ்யர்களான அடியோங்களால் விமர்சையாக திருவல்லிக்கேணி ஸ்ரீயதுகிரி யதிராஜ ஜீயர்  மடத்தில் கொண்டாடப்பட்டது. 

ஸ்ரீவைணவர்களான நம் அனைவருக்கும் எம்பெருமானார் இராமானுசர் திருவடி சம்பந்தமே மிக போக்யமானது.  உடையவர்   74 சீடர்களை சிம்ஹாசனாதிபதிகளாக நியமித்தருளினார்.  அந்த பரம்பரையில் வந்தவர்களிடம் பஞ்ச ஸம்ஸ்காரம் செய்து கொள்வோர் உடையவர் திருவடி சம்பந்தம் பெறுவர்.  உடையவர் சிஷ்யர்களில் அதி முக்கியமானவர் திரு முதலியாண்டான். அவரது திருக்குமரன் கந்தாடையாண்டான் - அவர் தம் வம்ச பரம்பரையில் வந்தவர் சோளசிங்கபுரம் தொட்டையாச்சார்யார் எனும் மஹாசார்யர்.  நமது வர்த்தமான ஆசார்யர் - ஸ்ரீமான் உபய வேதாந்த கோயில் கந்தாடை சண்டமாருதம் கந்தாடையாண்டான் (எ) யோகந்ருசிம்மன் ஸ்வாமி (Thiru KKC Yogesh Swami)

 

சில நூறாண்டுகள்  முன்பு நம் சுவாமி திருவம்சத்தில் ஸ்வாமி தொட்டாச்சார்யார் என்பவர் அக்காரக்கனியாக (இனிப்புச் சுவையுடைய பழம் போன்ற) போற்றப்படும் ஸ்ரீ யோக நரசிம்மருக்குப் பூஜைகள் செய்துவந்தார். பெருமாளிடம் பக்தி கொண்ட அவர் ஆண்டுதோறும் காஞ்சிபுரம் வரதராஜப் பெருமாள் கோவிலில் பிரம்மோற்சவத்திற்குச் சென்று பெருமாளைத் தரிசிப்பது வழக்கம். ஒரு முறை அவரால்  பிரம்மோற்சவத்திற்குச் செல்ல இயலவில்லை. மூன்றாம் நாள் கருட சேவை உற்சவத்தன்று ஸ்வாமி தொட்டாச்சார்யார் சோளசிம்மபுரம் என்ற தற்போதைய சோளிங்கரில் இருந்தவாறே  'ஸ்ரீ தேவராஜ  பஞ்சகம்'  எனும்  ஐந்து ஸ்லோகங்களைப் பாடினார். இதே நேரத்தில் காஞ்சியில் வரதராஜப் பெருமாள் கருட வாகன ரூபமாகத் திருவீதி உலா செல்வதற்காகக் கோயில் வாயிலுக்கு வந்தார். சோளிங்கரில் இந்த ஐந்து சுலோகங்களைப் பாடி முடிக்கவும், காஞ்சியில் கோயில் வாயிற் கதவு மூடிக்கொள்ளவும் சரியாக இருந்தது. 

மூடிய கதவுகளுக்குப் பின்னால் கருட சேவையில் இருந்த பெருமாள் அப்படியே சோளசிம்மபுரத்துக்கு  எழுந்தருளி தொட்டாச்சார்யாருக்குக் காட்சி கொடுத்தார். இன்றும் இது ஸ்வாமி தொட்டாச்சார்யார் சேவை என்று காஞ்சியில் வழங்கப்படுகிறது. சோளிங்கபுரத்தில் காட்சி அளித்த பெருமாள், தக்கான் குளக்கரையில் கருட சேவையிலேயே கோவில் கொண்டுள்ளார்.  அத்தகைய சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த திருவம்சத்திலே அவதரித்தவர் நம் ஆசார்யர். இன்று அவர் எழுந்து அருளி இருந்து நமக்கு அருளியது நம் பெரும் பாக்கியம். 

Understand that there were  5  Thirumaligais of the lineage of Doddacharyar  earlier.  Presently there are only two - the family of Swami Periyappangar Swami - of whose lineage is our varthamana Acharyar - Sri Ubhaya Vedantha Kovil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Singarachar Swamy;  the other is that of Swami Vedanthachaar. 

Sunday 22.6.2025,  was  a great day for the sishyas as the  Thirunakshathiram of Sri U.Ve. KKCP Periyappangar Swami &  thirunakshathiram of Sri Singarachar swami were celebrated at  Yadugiri Yathiraja Mutt, Triplicane.  Our varthamana Swami Sri KKCP Yoga Narasimhan  swami descended at Thiruvallikkeni  and hundreds of sishyas and members of ‘Sri Koil Kanthaadai Chandamarutham Periyappangar Swami Sishya Sabha’ gathered  to get the blessings of Acharyar.    

Tracing back our lineage,  Swami Sri Doddachar was born in 1543 in the famous lineage of Swami Mudaliandan.  In this Kaliyuga, we know that Thirukachi Arulalar directly conversed with Acharyan Thirukachi Nambigal  … and centuries later,  Sri Devathirajar had direct interaction with our Doddacharyar Swami too.  The most famous amongst the  brahmothsavam is the  Garuda Sevai – at Thirukachi,  Lord Devapperumal is taken in procession on vahanam of Garuda also known as Periya Thiruvadi.  Garuda Seva has special significance not only for Kanchi, more so for Sholinghur because of Swami Doddachaaryar connection.  Swami Doddayachar was an ardent devotee of Lord Varadharaja and did many kainkaryams to Him. He was a regular in the annual Vaikasi Garuda Sevai of Devathirajar. Legend has it that on a particular year, he was not well and could not attend the Garudothsavam at Kachi. He was feeling desperate about his misfortune of not being able to have darshan of PerArulalar at Kachi on Garuda vahanam. He lamented standing near the Thakkan kulam at Cholasimhapuram (Sholinghur]. He composed hymns on Lord Varadharaja, known as Sri Devaraja Panchakam. He longed for the Lord's sevai and these outpourings were a direct result. 

In the Devaraja Panchakam, Acharyan [Doddachaaryar] sings that .’Lord Varadarajan is radiant on the back of Garudan --the son of Vinathai—and is flanked on both sides by the twin sets of white umbrellas and Kavari deer tail chamarams (fans). His sacred, lotus-soft right hand is held in abhaya mudhra pose assuring all that He will free them from all their fears. His beautiful lotus-like eyes rain anugraham on all the beholders. Adiyen salutes always that Sarva Mangala Moorthy emerging out of His aasthaanam through the western gopuram on the third day of His Vaikasi Brahmothsavam. 

Emperuman will never let his ardent bhaktha down. He came down to Sholinghur and gave darshan to Doddacharyar - seated on Garuda vahanam. Such is the mercy and leela vinotham of PerArulalar. Continuing as it does, on every  Vaikasi Garudothsavam day, there is a tradition known as Doddachaaryar Sevai, when the archakas hide Lord Varadar at the western gate for a short time with divine white umbrellas (ven thirukudai) just before He leaves the temple.  It is believed that Lord goes to Sholinghur for giving darshan to Doddacharyar. The mangala harathi takes place thereafter. 

We are proud to follow the lineage of  Doddacharyar and follow the footsteps of our Acharyan - Sri U Ve Koil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Yoga Narasimha Swami. Here is the thanian of our Varthamana Swami….

On that important day at  Thiruvallikkeni,  there was Thirupallandu, Thiruppalliyezuchi Thiruppavai, Thirumozhi pasuram of Singavelkunram,  & Thirukadigai;  Kovil Thiruvaimozhi, Sri Ramanuja Noorranthathi and Upadesa Rathinamalai sevakalam.  Samasrayanam was performed for some sishyas.    We were too fortunate to have Perumal theertham and Sripada theertham of our Acharyan and  darshan of ‘Thiruvaradhana Perumal – Kannan’ of our Swami.  With his kind permission, photo of Lord Krishna who gets daily pooja of our Acharyar is also posted here.  Sri KKCP Bharath @ Srinivasan swami was also present at Tiruvallikkeni.

Wednesday 25^th June 2025 was Amavasai – while Pournami is Full Moon – how to name Amavasyai – New Moon or Dark moon ?  -  Amavasya is of great religious significance in Hinduism. It is considered a perfect time in remembering the ancestors and departed souls of the family and worshipping them. It is believed that, the day when Moonlight is absent, the sunlight reaches them. There is also a belief that on this day, the departed forefathers come down to the earth and visit their children and descendants.  In the ancient  Vedic world, the new moon was the first citing of the waxing crescent Moon. In western astronomy, the definition of the new moon is when ‘the Sun and Moon have the same longitude’, which means they are in a conjunction. This conjunction time is marked in many calendars, but the Moon is not visible at this moment..   .. .. 

In Astronomy, the new moon is the first lunar phase, when the Moon and Sun have the same ecliptic longitude.  At this phase, the lunar disk is not visible to the naked eye, except when it is silhouetted against the Sun during a solar eclipse.

The original meaning of the term 'new moon', which is still sometimes used in calendrical, non-astronomical contexts, is the first visible crescent of the Moon after conjunction with the Sun. This thin waxing crescent is briefly and faintly visible as the Moon gets lower in the western sky after sunset, with the smallest arc angle possible between 5–7°.  The precise time and even the date of the appearance of the new moon by this definition will be influenced by the geographical location of the observer.   

The new moon is significant in the lunar Hindu calendar. The first day of the calendar starts the day after the dark moon phase (Amavasya).  The term dark moon describes the last visible crescent of a waning Moon. The duration of a dark moon varies between 1.5 and 3.5 days, depending on its ecliptic latitude. In current astronomical usage, the new moon occurs in the middle of this dark period, when the Moon and Sun are in conjunction. This definition has entered popular usage, so that calendars will typically indicate the date of the "new moon" rather than the "dark moon". The Oxford English Dictionary defines the new moon as "the first visible crescent of the Moon, after conjunction with the Sun".   When the Moon's orbit is divided into 30 segments, as the ancient Greeks did in the time of Homer, the Babylonians did, and the Indians still do today (calling them tithi), the last phase is called the "dark moon". In Greek, it was called the "old moon" and associated with Hecate. In India, it is called Amavasya. 

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, Sri Parthasarathi Perumal had periya mada veethi purappadu on the occasion of Amavasya on 25.6.2025 – and it was Peyazhwar’s   Moonram thiruvanthathi recital.

எம்பெருமானுடைய பெருமைகளைப் பேசுவதற்கு மாஞானிகளால்தான் ஆகும், மற்ற  சாதாரணர்களால் ஆகாது‘ என்பதில்லை, வாய்திறந்து நான்கு சொற்களைத் தொடுத்து பேச வல்லவர்கள் எவருமே எம்பெருமான்   பெருமையைப் பேசி புகழ்வது, அவரவருக்கு உகந்தது.  ஸ்ரீ பேயாழ்வார்  ~ ஸ்ரீமன்  நாராயணனது  வடிவழகை  : 

"வாசமலர்த்துழாய் மாலையான், தேசுடைய சக்கரத்தான் சங்கினான் சார்ங்கத்தான்" 

எனுமாறு  பிரஸ்தாபிக்கிறார். 

 

இதை மனதில் கொண்டு, இன்றைய சாற்றுப்படியை சேவியுங்கள்.  நமது அற்புதனான ஸ்ரீபார்த்தசாரதி  - : மணம்மிக்க புஷ்பங்களோடு கூடின திருத்துழாய் மாலையை அணிந்து, தேஜ்ஸ்ஸையுடைய திருவாழியையும்  பாஞ்சசன்யத்தையும்  திருக்கரங்களிலே  கொண்டு பவனி வந்தது கண்கொள்ளாக் காட்சி.   திருவல்லிக்கேணி மாட வீதிதனிலே ஏதேனும் ஆனவர்களுக்கு இத்தகைய சிறப்பு சேவை இன்றும் என்றென்றும் !!    

Today is Aani Amavasai and at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, there was grand purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi.  Sri Peyalwar  categorically instructs us  – ‘how much will one speak about the greatness of Sriman Narayana ?  – by asking so, he only encourages  ordinary mortals  to think and speak more of thy glory.  The hidden meaning is while the learned Saints can speak of the completeness of Paramapurushan, everyone desirous of singing His glory, shall speak to the extent one can ~ of that Sriman Narayana, of His Chakra, Conch, Sarngam (the bow) and the mace that killed Dantavakra.   

The purpose of our birth is to appreciate and pray Sriman Narayana with folded hands calling Him by His various names.  Let us  surrender to His feet and enjoy His great qualities, which will stand us in good stead. Those who had the fortune of worshipping Him will for sure realize Him having the most beautiful fragrant garlands, having Thiruvazhi and Panchajanyam [Chakkaram and Sangu} - here are some photos taken during the purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni.
