International tourists flock here - though it is often
mentioned as ‘Mahabalipuram’ the
connection is more with the Pallavas as the name Mamallapuram is derived from Mamallan, or “great

known. It was during his reign that Hiuen Tsang, the Chinese Buddhist
monk-traveller, visited the Pallava capital at Kanchipuram.

A periplus (lit. "a sailing-around") is a logbook recording
sailing itineraries and commercial, political, and ethnological details about
the ports visited. In an era before maps were in general use, it functioned as
a combination of atlas and traveller's handbook.
The
Erythraean Sea ("the Red Sea") was an ancient geographical
designation that always included the Gulf of Aden between Arabia Felix and the
Horn of Africa and was often extended (as in this periplus) to include the
present-day Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean as a single maritime
area. The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is a Greco-Roman
periplus written in Koine Greek that describes navigation and trading
opportunities from Roman Egyptian ports like Berenice Troglodytica along the
coast of the Red Sea and others along the Horn of Africa, the Persian Gulf,
Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, including the modern-day Sindh region of
Pakistan and southwestern regions of India. The lost
port city of Muziris (near present day Kodungallur) in the Chera kingdom, as well as
the Early Pandyan Kingdom are mentioned in the Periplus as major centres of
trade, pepper and other spices, metal work and semiprecious stones, between
Damirica and the Roman Empire.
According to the Periplus, numerous Greek seamen managed an intense trade with Muziris: Then come Naura (Kannur) and Tyndis, the first markets of Damirica or Limyrike, and then Muziris and Nelcynda, which are now of leading importance. Tyndis is of the Kingdom of Cerobothra; it is a village in plain sight by the sea. Muziris, of the same kingdom, abounds in ships sent there with cargoes from Arabia, and by the Greeks; it is located on a river (River Periyar), distant from Tyndis by river and sea five hundred stadia, and up the river from the shore twenty stadia. — The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, 53–54

Thamizh Thalaivan Sri Peyazhvaar Uthsavam is now
on – today is day 5 and 22.10.2026 is Aippaisi Sadayam – sarrumurai.
Sri Peyalwar was born in a well in Mylapore
(thence known as Mylai Thiruvallikkeni). His birthplace is in the present
day Arundel Street in Mylapore closer to Mylai Sri Madhaava Perumal
Kovil. Here is a photo of
Thirumylai Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal thirukkovil Sri Peyazhwaar taken in 2021 –
one can see the sacred well also in this pic.

Nadaswara innisai : https://youtu.be/I6t7jep1wjM
.. .. and my friend, music critic Essel identifies this as :
“Sadā madini talatu gadarā”
Rāga: Gambhīravāṇi
Tāḷa: Ādi
Composer: Śrī Tyāgarāja
The
opening is given as:
sadā madini talatu gadarā
mudāspada nagajādhipatē
It
is a composition praising Lord
Śiva,
and the charanam ends with “tyāgarāja vinuta.”
It
has a deep,
dignified and somewhat majestic personality. It does not have
the immediately recognisable sweetness of Kalyani, Mohanam or Madhyamavati. Its
identity comes much more from its characteristic prayogas and treatment of the
swaras.
The
commonly given scale is:
Ārohaṇa:
S G₃ P M₁ D₃ N₃ S
Avarohaṇa:
S N₃ P M₁ G₃ R₂ G₃ R₂ S
Notice
something quite unusual: the ascent does not
simply go in the normal S R G M P D N S order. There is no
Rishabha in the ascent, while the descent introduces R₂ and has the distinctive G–R–G–R–S movement.
[Gaanapriya Foundation]
“Sadā
madini talatu kadara” is particularly interesting because this is one
of the very few compositions associated with Gambhīravāṇi. The
kriti is in Ādi tāḷa and
addresses Śiva.
sadā madini talatu kadarā
mudāspada nagajādhipatē
conveys: “Am I not always remembering You in my mind, O
Lord, the abode of bliss, O consort of Pārvatī?” and the charanam is packed with Śiva imagery — Digambara, destroyer of Antaka, bearer of
Ganga, wearer of the crescent moon, the expert dancer — finally
ending with “Tyagaraja
vinuta.”
“Sadā madini talatu” — traditionally
attributed to Tyagaraja, in Gambhīravāṇi.
Interesting !

Ever
wondered what is the purpose of life ? ~ why were we born .. why did Emperuman
bless us with good hands, legs and tongue ? – what are we to do with the
members of the body ??
Our civilization existed
thousands of years ago, colonization took place a few hundreds ago, those who
came here for trade, called themselves modern and we are aping the traditions
of the Western World. They did not come here to reform us, they
looted all our wealth and ensured that we remained slaves !! It is Europe that practised inhuman slavery and believed in
witchcraft !!!
To the Western World, the
emphasis is on different things, that we should only consider
insignificant. Among the many is – witchcraft or
sorcery. Witchcraft, as most commonly understood in both historical
and present-day communities, is the use of alleged supernatural powers of
magic. A witch is a practitioner
of witchcraft. Traditionally,
"witchcraft" means the use of magic or supernatural powers to inflict
harm or misfortune on others. According to Encyclopedia Britannica,
"Witchcraft thus defined exists more in the imagination of contemporaries
than in any objective reality. Yet this stereotype has a long history and has
constituted for many cultures a viable explanation of evil in the world”.
In Europe, belief in
witchcraft traces back to classical antiquity. In medieval and early modern
Europe, accused witches were usually women who were believed to have used black
magic or maleficium against their own community. Usually, accusations of
witchcraft were made by their neighbors and followed from social tensions.
Witches were sometimes said to have communed with evil
beings. Medieval Europe saw the Latin legal term maleficium applied
to forms of sorcery or witchcraft that were conducted with the intention of
causing harm.
The Salem witch trials
were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in
colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. More than 200 people
were accused. Thirty people were found guilty, nineteen of whom were executed
by hanging (fourteen women and five men). One other man, Giles Corey, died
under torture after refusing to enter a plea, and at least five people died in
the disease-ridden jails. Arrests were made in numerous towns beyond Salem
Village (known today as Danvers) and its regional center Salem
Town. It was the deadliest witch hunt in the history of colonial
North America.
The episode is one of
colonial America's most notorious cases of mass hysteria. It was not unique,
but a colonial manifestation of the much broader phenomenon of witch trials in
the early modern period, which took the lives of tens of thousands in Europe.
Alse Young Windsor, Connecticut —was the first recorded instance of execution
for witchcraft in the thirteen American colonies. She had one child, Alice
Beamon (Young), born in 1640, who was also condemned for the same crime thirty
years later but was not hanged.
For us
such things do not impact or cause worry .. .. we
are blessed with the good heart supported by strong and good faculty of hands,
legs, mouth, tongue with its faculty of speech – all provided for
the purpose of praising our Emperuman Sriman Narayanan all the time and to
those who do not indulge in such practices despite have strong limbs, we should
feel sad for such people who make no effort to praise the
Lord get to accrue further Karmas by their act of non-performance !.

Thirumangai Āḻwār saritham is especially fascinating because his life is
closely associated with travel and
pilgrimmage. Tradition presents him as one of the most widely
travelling of the Āḻvārs, and his Periya
Tirumozhi gives us a remarkable geographical record of the
sacred places he visited and the Perumals,
he did mangalasasanam . He travelled length and breadth of the
country - broadly from Chola
country →
Pallava/Thondaimandalam →
Kongu/Chera country →
Karnataka/Andhra regions → Northern India,
One particularly
interesting point is that his travels were not simply a pilgrimage itinerary: the very structure of the Periya Tirumozhi suggests an Āḻvār who actually moved from one kṣhetra to another and described the local
landscape, temple, deity and his own experience there.
A post not on the mangalasasanam or pasuram of the Azhwar but about the recent travel - a pain in our throat reading how Azhwar was moved out – he was not alone !! His Thirumeni was stolen from the temple in Kumbakonam, along with Kalinganarthana Krishna, Sriman Narayana and Sridevi idols between 1957 and 1967. And years later … ..rather decades later – the guardians of the Temple workup. Based on the complaint lodged by the temple’s executive officer on February 12, 2020, the Idol Wing traced the Thirumangai Alvar idol to Oxford University’s Ashmolean Museum, which had acquired it from an unidentified seller in 1967. !!!!

அவரது கதாபாத்திரங்கள் பல முறை கூறுகின்றன.

separate sannidhi at this temple for 18 step Karuppiah(similar to Azhagar Koil)
who is the security chieftain for this temple. .. .. and
there is a tragic story !!
This temple village is
very much in the vicinity and buses between Kumbakonam and Thanjavur stop near
the Railway station named Sundara Perumal Koil, around 2km west of Swami Malai
and 5km east of Papanasam..
The good news today is
- Oxford has handed over a
“stolen” statue to India in the university’s latest repatriation pledge.
The
university’s Ashmolean Museum was asked to return the 500-year-old sculpture of
Hindu holy man Tirumankai Alvar, alleged to have been stolen from a
temple. The Oxford museum agreed to hand over the artwork following
pressure from India, which has been conducting a quiet campaign to reclaim
treasures from Britain.
A press release of the Ashmolean museum read :
In Nov 2019, an independent
scholar brought new research to our attention relating to the provenance of an
Indian 16th-century bronze of Saint Tirumankai Alvar which was acquired by the
Ashmolean at Sothebys in 1967. Research
in the photo archives of the Institut Français de Pondichery and the Ecole
française d’Extrême Orient (IFP-EFEO) appears to show the same bronze in the
temple of Shri Soundarrajaperumal Kovil in Tamil Nadu in 1957. The Ashmolean was informed that the bronze is
one of a number of objects in collections in Europe and the United States
identified by this researcher through the IFP-EFEO archive.
Although there was no claim
against the object, the Museum brought the matter to the attention of the
Indian High Commission on 16 December 2019, requesting any further information
(including possible police records) that would help establish the object’s
provenance; and noting that we were open to holding discussions about the
possible repatriation of the sculpture. The Indian High Commissioner acknowledged
our letter on 24 December 2019 and informed us that the matter and the
information we provided had been forwarded to the Indian authorities; and
expressed appreciation that the University of Oxford and the Ashmolean had been
proactive in this matter.
The Museum received a
formal claim for the bronze from the Indian High Commissioner on 3 March
2020. In order to complete
‘due-diligence’ investigations and build a more accurate provenance for the
object, a member of Ashmolean staff planned to visit India in May 2020, but
this was postponed by the pandemic. The
journey took place in July 2022 when the Ashmolean’s Curator of Indian Art met
police officers from the Idol Wing and senior officials of the Archaeological
Survey of India (ASI), the French Institute, Shri Nagaswamy Temple (Icon
Centre), and Shri Soundararaja Perumal Temple.
ASI officials asked the Museum to undertake metal analysis of the
bronze, which has been submitted to the ASI who will, in turn, complete a
report on the object and its known provenance.
The Museum acquired the statue in good faith in 1967. According to the Sotheby’s catalogue, the bronze was sold by the private collector, Dr J R Belmont (1886-1981).
A monumental win for
heritage restitution and living temple culture! This Chola-style bronze
depiction of Thirumangai Azhwar—holding his trademark sword (Vel) and shield—is
not just an exquisite artifact, but a sacred figure integral to local temple
rituals. Returning a stolen icon back to Sundaraperumal Kovil after nearly
seven decades restores crucial cultural memory and continuity. Immense
gratitude to the researchers, historians, and legal custodians who tirelessly
trace provenance and bring lost sacred bronzes home.
Now after many decades, the
vigraham of Kaliyan, [Thirumangai Mannan] is restored to Arulmigu Soundararaja Perumal Temple in
Kumbakonam, Thanjavur District. Through the coordinated efforts of the Idol Wing, Archaeological
Survey of India and other agencies and great persons like Mr Vijayakumar [@poetryinstone;
Co-founder India Pride Project , Author : The Idol Thief. Art Enthusiast,
Blogger vj.episteme@gmail.com] the vigraham was
successfully recovered and brought back to Tamil Nadu on 16.08.2026.
600-year-old Thirumangai
Alwar statue belonging to Sri Soundararaja Perumal Kovil, Kumbakonam, Tamil
Nadu, which was stolen in the 1950s, has returned to its motherland after a
long struggle. It is no showpiece or art – it is Lord meant for worship in a Temple,
not meant to be kept in Art galleries for viewing – such religious ones going
missing, people not even knowing that they went missing is
heart-breaking. Worser still, the idols of Kalinganarthana Krishna,
MahaVishnu and Sridevi also Thirumangai Azhwar had been replaced
with fake images at the temple about 60 years ago and this had gone unnoticed
all these years, the police said.
Blissfully unaware of all
such occurrences with nil reaction, meantime, we continue to go to Temples once
a while and complain about we having to wait sometime for darshan and not
getting Prasad and more !
