Andal Thiruppavai ~ pictorial pasura vilakkam

For Srivaishnavaites, it is worship of Sriman Narayana, kainkaryam unto HIM – reciting Nalayira divyaprabantha pasurams is quintessential – and the basic starts with Thiruppavai.  Andal composed two works  unique in their literary, philosophical, religious, and artistic content.  One is  Tiruppavai, a composition of thirty verses in which Andal imagines herself to be a cowherd girl during the incarnation of Lord Krishna.  The second is the Nachiyar Tirumozhi, comprising of 143 verses.

Here is a  rather fascinating pictorial presentation of the Thiruppāvai. Do look  closely at the smaller panels in the  photograph, and the little captions actually make the arrangement much clearer and adds a lot of itnerst. The title at the bottom is:

Sri Āṇḍāl Tiruppāvai Vaibhavam.

The artist has  essentially created a visual Thiruppāvai commentary: one little picture for each of the 30 pāsurams, with the opening words printed below each panel. And this is not merely a generic collection of Vishnu stories. The  central picture is particularly interesting -  Sriman Narayana seated upon Ādiśeṣha, with the serpent hood spreading behind Him.  The lower central picture gives us another aspect of the same theological world: Nārāyaṇa reclining upon Ādiśeṣa in the Kṣīrasāgara.  So it is  the Supreme Lord at the centre, and surrounded Him with the narrative and devotional world of Andal's 30 verses.

The little panels aren't all illustrations of Krishna's childhood. They range across: the awakening of the girls → their going to Krishna → Krishna's various avatāra deeds → cosmic manifestations → episodes involving devotees → the final surrender to Govinda.  This simply is not a pictorial depiction of Margazhi recital of pasurams – it is more of the  old popular devotional chromolithograph/oleograph-style prints that were meant not merely for decoration but to teach the stories visually.

As you could see – there is :  Puḷḷum silambina kāṇ  - Dawn: birds have awakened, the conch is sounding, and the girls are waking the sleeper.7 Kīsu kīsu - Women churning curd/butter, with the sound of the bangles and the churning clearly depicted.8 Kīzh vāṉam veḷḷeṉṟu - Dawn breaking; the eastern sky becoming light and the girls urging their companion to rise.  9 Tūmaṇi māṭathu - A beautiful wealthy house, with the girl still inside — the famous tūmaṇi māṭam scene.  Unthu matha kaḷiṟṟaṉ- Nappinnai becomes central — the girls appeal to her and to Krishna, with the strong elephant imagery of the verse.

Pāsuram 23 — “Māri malai muḻaiñcil” — is a lovely example. The verse says:  māri malai muḻaiñcil mannik kidandhu uṟaṅgum – traditionally this pasuram invokes the imagery of the lion lying in its mountain cave and emerging majestically. The artist uses Krishna  imagery to convey that majestic emergence. Similarly, 24, “Aṉṟu ivvulagam”, is unmistakably Trivikrama, because the verse explicitly recalls the Lord measuring the worlds. 27, “Koodarai veḷḷum”, is especially delightful: the artist has understood the pāsuram not merely as an abstract theological statement but as the joyous reward after the vrata — ornaments, food, togetherness and celebration.

Interesting ! ~  “A vintage devotional print”with Sri Andal Thiruppavai vaibhavam written in Telugu, Tamil, English and Sanskrit at the bottom.  This too from Mr MA Narasimhan’s art collections – special thanks to him for showing this wonderful piece and allowing it to be photographed and written about.

Andal Thiruvadipura Sarrumurai 2026 ~ some history of 14th August

Andal Thiruvadipura Sarrumurai purappadu 2026

Today is 14th August ! - 14th august, for India,  is steeped history and lot of bloodshed. It is not merely the eve of Independence Day. It was the day on which the final hours of British India unfolded, Pakistan came into being, and the Constituent Assembly of India prepared for the midnight transfer of power.

On 14 August 1947, Lord Mountbatten travelled to Karachi, where Muhammad Ali Jinnah was sworn in as the first Governor-General of Pakistan. Mountbatten then flew back to Delhi for the Indian ceremonies.   Meanwhile, in New Delhi, the Constituent Assembly assembled at 11 p.m. on 14 August. At midnight, India would cease to be under British rule. Jawaharlal Nehru delivered the famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech in the early hours of 15 August.

The original legal date of independence for both India and Pakistan was 15 August 1947. Pakistan began observing 14 August from 1948. One reason was that the formal transfer ceremony in Karachi had taken place on 14 August, allowing Mountbatten to attend it and still reach Delhi for India's midnight ceremony.   We don’t celebrate this day – it is   Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, reminding us the enormous human suffering accompanying Partition—mass migration, communal violence and loss of life.

Turns the annals of History, on  14 August 1945, Emperor Hirohito finally accepted the Allied terms of the Potsdam Declaration and Japan agreed to unconditional surrender. The Japanese government communicated its acceptance to the Allies.   That evening in Tokyo, Hirohito recorded his famous radio message to the Japanese people. It was secretly recorded around 11 p.m. on 14 August and was broadcast at noon on 15 August. It was the first time the Japanese public had ever heard the Emperor's voice.

There was even a dramatic last-minute coup attempt by Japanese military officers during the night of 14–15 August, aimed at preventing the broadcast and continuing the war. It failed. Even after Japan had decided to surrender on 14 August, American aircraft were still conducting operations. In fact, more than 1,000 B-29s bombed Japan on 14 August, and U.S. carrier strikes were planned for the following morning. The official confirmation of surrender arrived while some of those operations were already being prepared.

On 14 August 1926, Pappuri Ramacharyulu started Sri Sadhana Patrika at Anantapur. The paper became an important voice covering the Indian national movement, literary activity and the social conditions of the Rayalaseema region. It continued until 1968.

For Srivaishnavaites, the month of  Aadi has  special significance for on this month was born the female saintess Azhwar Andal.   Godadevi  was born at Srivilliputhur  in the Tamil month Adi, with the birth-star Pooram, which is celebrated as ‘Thiruvadippuram’.  A great day today  (29th day of Aadi – Puram nakshathiram / 14th Aug 2026) ~ the concluding day of Andal Uthsavam – Thiruvadipuram.  In the evening at 7 pm @ Thiruvallikkeni divaydesam, it was grand purappadu of Sri Andal with Sri Parthasarathi in eka asanam ~ same kedayam.

As the purappadu started in grandeur, there was some drizzling, forcing conversion to siriya mada veethi and as rain lashed, Perumal & Andal entered Sri Peyalwar sannathi while arulicheyal goshti continued rendering Iramanusa noorranthathi at 36 kaal mandapam.

Sri Andal in her Nachiyar Thirumozhi   describes the Lord as having the white conch, wearing beautiful yellow silken robes, having tresses on shoulders hovering like bees over His lotus face, the Lord of immense compassion been worshipped at Vrindavan [Brindavan nearer Mathura, where Krishna grew up ]

Andal Thiruvadipura Uthsavam 2 2026 :

The bird we call மயில் in Tamil literature is the Indian Peafowl, scientifically Pavo cristatus. The male is the peacock, while the female is the peahen; together they are called peafowl. The Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) is India's national bird, officially adopted in 1963.

Peacocks are  native to the Indian subcontinent, particularly India and Sri Lanka, and is found in a remarkably wide range of habitats—open woodland, scrub, agricultural landscapes, grasslands and areas around villages. It does not require dense forest and is often seen close to human habitation.  In India, they are seen  across much of the country, from the dry regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat to the forests and agricultural landscapes of central and southern India; however not found in the concrete jungle of Chennai. It is especially associated culturally with the Indian landscape because it can thrive alongside cultivation and human settlements.

What we commonly call the peacock's tail is actually largely the elongated upper tail-coverts. During courtship the male raises these feathers into the spectacular circular train, displaying the numerous “eyespots” (ocelli).  The display is primarily associated with courtship and sexual selection. The peahen chooses a mate, and the elaborate train is therefore a classic example of a sexually selected ornament.

The traditional association between peacocks and the monsoon has a genuine behavioural basis. Increased humidity, changing weather and the breeding season coincide with increased calling and display activity. Thus the familiar literary image of the peacock dancing when rain clouds gather is not simply poetic invention. This helps explain why the peacock occurs so naturally in Indian poetry alongside clouds, rain, mountains and the onset of the monsoon.

There is an interesting historical reference in the Arthashastra, traditionally associated with Kautilya, which discusses peafowl among animals and birds subject to state regulation. Peacock imagery also appears in the Mauryan period; the famous Ashokan artistic tradition includes peacock motifs.  There  is a  rather unusual reference in Book II, Chapter 30, the Superintendent of Horses (2.30.4).  Kautilya says that the royal horse establishment should contain, among other creatures:

— monkeys, peacocks, spotted deer, mongooses, chakora partridges, parrots and mynas.

At first this sounds almost decorative—why would a royal stable be filled with peacocks and other birds? There is an interesting practical/traditional explanation. Peacocks and mongooses were associated with detecting or countering danger from snakes and poison, and the presence of these animals in royal establishments may have had a protective function. The scholarly discussion of the passage notes this association.  The Arthaśāstra elsewhere explicitly says that releasing peacocks, mongooses and spotted deer can help destroy snakes:

mayūra-nakula-pṛṣatotsargaḥ sarpān bhakṣayati

—   “the release of peacocks, mongooses and spotted deer causes snakes to be consumed.”

Thiruvallikkeni Andal bangles !! - 'கோல்வளை' ~ Asanthene tradition !! ??

Thiruvallikkeni Andal bangles !! - '

Curious  about the second pic !!  ~  an attractive ornament now in British Museum.  The British Museum object Af1900,0427.14 is a wrist ornament (suman) made in the Asante region, dated approximately 1800–1895. It contains – gold beads, glass beads, gold crotal bells, fibre pendats, twisted vegetable fibre cord and more.  The is Asante wrist ornament.

Firozabad in UttarPradesh has earned the name ‘Suhag Nagari’ which means the city of married women,  where the married women wear bangles as a symbol of prosperity. Laad Bazaar or Choodi Bazaar in Hyderabad is famous for varieties of  pearl bangles.  Laad Bazaar is the centuries- bangles market near Charminar in Hyderabad, which has inspired photographers and poets.   Moradabad city in India is the largest producer of bangles.  Nakkavanipalem, a tiny village near Narsipatnam was once a place where skilled bangle workers were in existence.

Gold bangles have adorned and ornamented women’s dainty wrists since ages. This is a symbol of status, prosperity, and wealth. Wrists vary in size, thickness, texture, strength, and symbolize kindness as well as for gallantry. Wrists must be decorated with jewels not because they help establish the human connection! More so because they are status symbols.  Diamond Bangles also sell well !  the Jewellers cash more in experimentation with so called newer designs, patterns, styling, engraving and more !   - some would prefer  very delicate thin gold bangles while some would insist them being solid and weighing more !

Moving away, there are many Nations, cultures, traditions that are linked to wearing of high value gold bracelets, bangles and ornaments.    Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal have traditions closest to India, while the Gulf countries too have an age old tradition.    In Ghana, particularly among the Akan and Asante, gold has an extraordinarily important cultural history. Gold bracelets, armlets and other ornaments were historically associated with royalty, chiefs, wealth and authority. The Asante tradition is especially remarkable because gold was not merely decorative. Gold objects could communicate rank, political authority and social standing.

In Nigeria, elaborate bracelets and bangles are prominent in Yoruba, Igbo and other traditions. Among wealthy families, gold jewellery may form an important part of bridal adornment, sometimes including substantial bracelets worn together with necklaces, earrings and rings.  Among the Maasai, colourful beadwork is much more characteristic than gold.  Women traditionally wear numerous beaded bracelets, arm ornaments and necklaces, often using strong colours and geometric patterns. These ornaments can communicate aspects of age, marital status, community identity and ceremonial participation.

Ghana, particularly the Akan/Asante tradition, is probably one of the best African examples to compare with India's tradition of precious bangles and jewellery.  For Asante royalty — gold was much more than jewellery  The Asantehene (King of the Asante) and senior chiefs traditionally appeared in extraordinarily elaborate regalia: Kente cloth, crowns, rings, gold ornaments, swords with gold-covered hilts, staffs, soul-washer's badges and other objects.

Gold had a deep symbolic meaning. In Akan thought it was associated with the sun and the life force (kra), so its presence on the king was not simply a demonstration of wealth. Royal gold regalia represented authority, power, vitality and sacred status. Here is the King wearing ornaments.  Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, 16th Asantehene, in traditional royal regalia, 2019.

கோல் + வளை can be understood as a beautiful, well-formed/ornamental bangle, and கோல்வளை becomes an epithet describing the woman who wears such bangles.

In classical Tamil, compounds involving வளை frequently extend from the ornament itself to the woman adorned with it.

13.8.2023  was Thiruvadipuram [Puram Nakshathiram in the month of Aadi] –    the  most blessed day for all Srivaishnavaites –  marking  the birth of Kothai Piratti [Andal].  In the ongoing Thiruvadipura Uthsavam- on day 9 – it was siriya thiruther for Sri Andal.  Here are some photos of Andal purappadu to thiruther and Andal wearing beautiful bangles.
