Aani Amavasai 2026 - "அகங்கார மமகாரங்கள்" - Ornaments worn on head !!!

Today 14th July 2026   is Punarvasu  in the month of  Aani  – masa thirunakshathiram of Kulasekara Azhwar, Swami Mudaliandan & Embar…. Today is Amavasai too.. .. ..

When someone asks you – ‘How are you ?’ – what would be the answer – is it simply ‘fine’ or factual ‘not so fine’.  How willing are you to  genuinely listen to people ? How often would you interrupt to say – what I do, how I would have handled this ! or in my personal experience and .. .. ..

Glory, or difficulty – nothing is permanent.  In this World, there have been mighty Kings –  not exactly those  who ruled the entire Universe but many lesser mortals with valour who ruled over a piece of land and were proud -  history has it that they have fallen biting the dust – that what can lesser humans who possess broken pots as their asset dream of …. Alwar directs us to fall at the feet of Lord Sriman Narayana  .. ..

We think, speak and surround ourselves with Self !!  .. .. .. the  ego (Latin for "I") acts according to the reality principle; i.e., it seeks to please the id's drive in realistic ways that, in the long term, bring benefit, rather than grief.  At the same time, Freud concedes that as the ego "attempts to mediate between id and reality, it is often obliged to cloak the unconscious commands of the id with its own preconscious rationalizations, to conceal the id's conflicts with reality, to profess...to be taking notice of reality even when the id has remained rigid and unyielding." The reality principle that operates the ego is a regulating mechanism that enables the individual to delay gratifying immediate needs and function effectively in the real world.

Here are some photos of Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman taken during Aani Amavasai purappadu today.   Falling at the feet of Emperuman praying to remove all my ignorance and bless me with a stable mind that is attached to His lotus feet and encourages in doing kainkaryam to Emperuman and His followers

On the outskirts of Madurai, roughly eight kilometers from the city lies one of the most prominent  Saivaite religious shrines -  Thiruparankundram Murugan. It is among the six abodes of Lord Murugan, called Arupadaiveedu as a whole. The temple was built by the Pandyas during the eighth century by a single mountain carving out the rocks, which add to its overall magnetism. It is here that  Shanmugar married Deivayanai, the princess of heaven and the divine daughter of Lord Indra after slaying the demon king Surapadman. So, this temple is considered one of the most promising places for marriages.

Thiruparankundram and its landmark hill contains some of the earliest cave temples of Shaivism tradition in this region. The hill is sacred -  Kandhamalai (lit. "hill of Kandha (Murugan, Kartikeya) – the god of war").  The temple complex is Thirupparamkunram Murugan temple, one of the Six Abodes of Murugan (Aru padai veedu).

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Friday reserved orders on a batch of petitions filed over the location chosen by the Subramaniya Swamy temple administration for lighting Karthigai Deepam at Thiruparankundram hill on December 3. The petitioners challenged the decision of temple administration to light the Karthigai Deepam at the 'usual' location - Deepa Mandapam near the Uchipillaiyar temple on the hill. They alleged that the said mandapam is used to light 'Moksha Deepam' and the same spot cannot be used for Karthigai Deepam. They claimed that the ritual traditionally took place on an ancient stone pillar (Deepa Thoon) located more than 15 metres away from the Sikandar Badusha Dargah on the hilltop, saying it would make the deepam more visible.

HR&CE while arguing against,  admitted that the stone pillar was covered by the temple authorities since it was not being used. Addl AG for the State said  rituals for lighting the deepam have begun and the public have been informed that the deepam would be lit in Uchipillaiyar temple mandapam . No changes can be proposed at this stage, he added.

Recently, Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court delivered its third-judge ruling on the Thiruparankundram Hillock dispute, settling the split verdict delivered in June this year. Justice GR Vijayakumar, the third judge nominated to decide the matter, largely concurred with the views of Justice S Srimathy, affirming that the name of the hillock shall remain Thiruparankundram Hill and not Sikkandar Malai.

The judgment resolved three contentious issues - the name of the hillock, the practice of animal sacrifice at the Sikkandar Badusha Dargah, and the right of Muslims to offer prayers at the Nellithoppu area.

Justice Vijayakumar noted that revenue and archaeological records, including a 1908 and a 1923 Gazette notification under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act, identify the area as Thiruparankundram Rock. The notifications declare 172.2 acres of the hill as protected monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Citing these records and the 1920 civil court decree, the judge held that referring to the hill as Sikkandar Malai was "mischievous" and amounted to an attempt to alter its historical name. The judge also observed that Arulmigu Subramaniaswamy Temple at the foothills is the owner of the entire Thiruparankundram Hill except for two portions - the Sikkandar Badhusha Avuliya Dargah at the southern peak and the Nellithoppu area midway - which earlier civil court decrees had recognised as belonging to the Mohammedans. The Dargah and Nellithoppu areas together form only a small part of the 172-acre hill, with Nellithoppu itself measuring about 33 cents.

The Judgement further cleared that  no animal sacrifice can be permitted on the hillock, citing that there was no documentary proof showing animal sacrifice as a long-standing or essential religious practice at the Dargah. The court held that even if the dargah administration claims animal sacrifice as a religious custom, it must establish this before a competent civil court. Until such a decision is made, no animal sacrifice, cooking, or serving of non-vegetarian food would be allowed anywhere on the hill.  The Court permitted Muslims to offer prayers in the Nellithoppu area during Ramzan and Bakrid alone, subject to strict conditions. The  steps, which also lead to the Kasi Vishwanathar Temple atop the hill, must not be obstructed or defiled.

na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ ~ Bhishma Pitamaha on death bed of arrows !!

The great epic Ithihas purana - "Mahabharata was not a mere  war commentary" – though predominantly describing the battle – it is not  just a narrative of conflict,  it highlights  the devastating consequences, the philosophical and ethical dilemmas of warfare, profoundly acknowledging  the principles of Dharma and Adharma, serving as a lesson on duty, righteousness, and the far-reaching, destructive impact of war, even when fought for a just cause.

There are so many powerful characters almost all them mighty warriors excepting Bhagwan Sree Krishna who sought to stand by dharma without touching weapons  The Mahabharata does not glorify war but instead powerfully conveys its destructive nature and the immense loss of life it entails.  There is Bhishma Pitamaha – the avowed warrior to stood to protect the kingdom of Hastinapur.    Here is a picture of Bhishma on death bed – of arrows !  painful even to think and look.

The  Bed of arrows was the  state of Bhishma Pitamaha after he was mortally wounded in battle, symbolizing his valour, sacrifice, and devotion. This term serves as a metaphorical expression for Bhishma's final moments, where he lies on a  bed made of arrows that signify his heroic status and the circumstances of his defeat. It represents both his suffering and the tranquility he finds in accepting death, embodying the honor associated with warriors who uphold their duties.

na dhana na jana na sundarī

kavitā vā jagadīśa kāmaye

mama janmani jamanīśvare

bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi

O almighty Lord, I have no desire to accumulate wealth, nor do I desire beautiful women, nor do I want any number of followers. I only want Your causeless devotional service birth after birth.

As the dust settled on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, the great warrior Bhishma Pitamah lay on a bed of arrows, pierced yet undefeated in spirit. His body, riddled with wounds, glowed with an inner light, for he was no ordinary mortal. Bhishma was blessed with Ichha Mrityu, the boon to choose the time of his death, and he now waited for the Uttarayan (the auspicious time when the sun transitions northward) to leave his mortal coil.

The Pandavas, victorious but weary, were haunted by the devastation around them. Yudhishthira, their eldest brother and the rightful heir to the throne, was particularly distraught. The weight of war and the loss of countless lives had plunged him into a deep moral dilemma. He doubted his ability to rule with justice and righteousness. Seeing Yudhishthira’s anguish, Krishna, the guide and protector of the Pandavas, advised him to seek wisdom from the wisest man alive—Bhishma.    Despite fighting on the side of the Kauravas, Bhishma had always been the epitome of dharma and knowledge.  The Pandavas approached Bhishma, who lay on his arrow-laden bed, his face serene despite the agony of his wounds. Krishna stood by their side, his divine presence filling the atmosphere with peace. Yudhishthira folded his hands and bowed before Bhishma.

The story of Bhishma's fall in battle and his interaction with the warriors who gathered around him provides a profound lesson on resilience, honor, and integrity. Bhishma's unwavering commitment to his principles, even in the face of death, teaches us the importance of staying true to our values, no matter the circumstances. He chooses a warrior's bed of arrows over comfort, symbolizing the importance of living and dying by one's beliefs and responsibilities.

From Bhishma's request for an appropriate "pillow,"  one need to recognize and appreciate the  true essence of support and comfort, not in material possessions, but in actions and decisions that align with our inner convictions. Even in his final moments, Bhishma's interactions are characterized by dignity and respect, showing us the value of treating others with honor, regardless of the situation. The respect and veneration all the warriors show towards Bhishma, despite being in opposing camps,  tells that  true merit and character can transcend conflict and earn universal respect.

Bhishma's dying words to Lord Krishna during the Mahabharata were, "I have no desire for wealth, followers, .. .. … .. .. " ("na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagad-isha kamaye. mama janmani janmanishvare. bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi"), as he lay on his bed of arrows, accepting Krishna as the supreme Lord.

Fire the purifier

Heard of hearth ?   Prytaneion  !!  -     In the Byzantine Empire a tax on hearths known as kapnikon was first explicitly mentioned for the reign of Nikephorus I.

Fire is the only tattva that  burns all impurities to ashes without getting itself impure. Others  like water, air etc can get impure when used to clean impurities.

Cleaning is a core part of daily life. Whether you’re cleaning your hands, a kitchen countertop, or high-touch surfaces in a workplace, everyone carries out cleaning at some point. In life cleansing thyself is essential for good health, especially mental health.

Worship or deification of fire (also pyrodulia, pyrolatry or pyrolatria), or fire rituals, religious rituals centred on a fire, are centric in  various religions. Fire has been a primordial  part of human culture since the Lower Paleolithic. In many religions there is Fire God (Agni in our religion) -  as a personification of fires in general, and He is  believed to reside in some sense in any particular ritual fire, or the fire may represent worship of another deity.

In Hinduism, Purifying Fire symbolizes transformation and purification, embodying Agni's essence as a powerful cleanser that impacts both spiritual and physical domains, highlighting fire's significant role in enabling renewal and change. Fire is thus viewed as a powerful transformer of the negative to the positive.

Enji  is the old name of the fire god in the Albanian pagan mythology evidently contained in the week day name that was dedicated to him – e enjte – the Albanian word for Thursday.  The Fire – Zjarri – is deified in Albanian tradition as releaser of light and heat with the power to ward off darkness and evil, affect cosmic phenomena and give strength to the Sun (Dielli, who is worshiped as the god of light, sky and weather, giver of life, health and energy, and all-seeing eye), and as sustainer of the continuity between life and afterlife and between the generations. The divine power of Fire is used for the hearth and the rituals, including calendar fires, sacrificial offerings, divination, purification, and protection from big storms and other potentially harmful events.

A hearth is the place in a home where a fire is or was traditionally kept for home heating and for cooking, usually constituted by at horizontal hearthstone and often enclosed to varying degrees by any combination of reredos (a low, partial wall behind a hearth), fireplace, oven, smoke hood, or chimney. Hearths are usually composed of masonry such as brick or stone. For millennia, the hearth was such an integral part of a home, usually its central and most important feature, that the concept has been generalized to refer to a homeplace or household, as in the terms "hearth and home" and "keep the home fires burning".

In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Hestia  (lit.'hearth, fireplace, altar') is the virgin goddess of the hearth and the home. In myth, she is the firstborn child of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, and one of the Twelve Olympians.  As the goddess of sacrificial fire, Hestia received the first offering at every domestic sacrifice. In the public domain, the hearth of the prytaneum functioned as her official sanctuary. Whenever a new colony was established, a flame from Hestia's public hearth in the mother city would be carried to the new settlement. The goddess Vesta is her Roman equivalent.

The enlightened sages call those persons wise, whose every action is free from the desire for material pleasures and who have burnt the reactions of work in the fire of divine knowledge.

Imp Pre-script :  Trying to write something about our ancient scriptures and Sages in English collating info from the web is not exactly the right thing.  An attempt to write something on a great Sage.  If there are mistakes / distortions / wrong presentation, please bear and point out them – will learn and correct (adiyen dhasan)

The  Mitākarā, written by,  is a vivti (legal commentary) on the Yajnavalkya Smriti.  Vijñāneśvara was a scholar in the Kalyani Chalukya court.  The Salutation starts thus : He, in whom there exist under complete subjugation, the Dharma and non-Dharma, with their three-fold results, as well as the five kinds of pains, which overpower all living beings and who is untouched by qll these, is the Lord. I praise that Vishnu who is designated by the syllable Om.

The sacred literature of the Hindus is known as Sruti & Smriti.  Sruti literally means – what is heard.  The Vedas, Aranyakas, Upanishads are included in this class.  Smriti means that which is remembered – hence traditions.  The law books, puranas, Ithihasas, et. al belong to this.   Smritis, therefore, are not like tho Vedas, considered to be eternal and unchangeable. Every Yuga or cycle had its own Smriti, hence  It is not necessary to enter into the question as to the origin of Smritis. Suffice to know that Smritis were brought into existence as circumstances called for them.

Eternal truths of Hinduism, either in philosophy, or religion or dharma have come down to us through the Maharishis in the past. Vedas are the records of Maharishis, who comprehended the truths through their divine power, otherwise called tapas and yoga. Puranas describe penance for several years without food, which are only a description of such divine power. That divine power is revealed to mankind through some sages, who propagate the truths and tenets recorded in the eternal Vedas.

Staal notes that though the name Yajnavalkya is derived from yajna, which connotes ritual, Yajnavalkya is referred to as "a thinker, not a ritualist." Yajnavalkya was a disciple  of Vaisampayana and the compiler of the Shukla Yajurveda Samhita. Yajnavalkya was the pupil of Uddālaka Ārui, whom he defeated in debate.

Yajnavalkya was the seer who received the Shukla Yajurveda from the Divine. Thus, he is known as the founder of the Sukla Yujurveda tradition. Yajnavalkya or Yagyavalkya is a  Vedic sage featured  in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad and Tattiriya Upanishad. Yajnavalkya proposes and debates metaphysical questions about the nature of existence, consciousness and impermanence, and expounds the epistemic doctrine of neti neti ("not this, not this") to discover the universal Self and Ātman.  Yajnavalkya himself mentions, “Anyone who desires to master yoga should know the Aranyaka that I received from the sun as well as the yoga treatise that I proclaimed.” (Yajnavalkya Smriti 3. It is written as a discourse from Yajnavalka to his sagely disciples about the laws or dharmas of society.  The scripture is broken into three sections discussing: (1) achara (i.e., behavior), (2) vyavahara (i.e., legal procedure), and (3) prayascita (i.e., atonement).  In the second section, Yagnavalkya breaks down the entire court process into four steps: plaint, plea, evidence and verdict. In the third section, Yajnavalkya claims that through prayascita, the soul and the world are pleased.

Near Mithila, there lived in an ashram a Maharishi named Katyayana. His daughter Katyayani  was very beautiful and intelligent. She was proficient in many branches of learning.   Yagnavalkya accepted his offer and the marriage was conducted in an auspicious day. The couple led an ideal life of enjoyment, happiness, contentment and peace. In the course of time Katyayani presented Yagnavalkya with four sons and they were named Katyayana, Chandrakanta, Mahamedha and Vijaya. All these sons in their own time became great scholars and renowned for their knowledge in Vedas and Sastras.

In the town of Janakpur, near the city of Mithila, assisting King Janaka as a minister was a learned Vedic scholar and sage name Mitra. He had an accomplished and extremely beautiful daughter called Maitreyi.  She had a thirst for theological truths and was interested in gaining knowledge of the Vedas, Upanishads and Sastras.  Maitreyi learnt and trained under Gargi.  Since Yagnavalkya was already married to Katyayani , she with the consent of her parents  went, along with Gargi, to Katyayani and dwelt in detail her objective of learning from the great sage and she said the only way was to become the second wife. She requested Katyayani to grant her the boon and consent for the marriage. Katyayani, realising Maitreyi's bent of mind, acceded to her request.

Maitreyi  was a great scholar, studied metaphysics and was engaged in theological dialogues with her husband in addition to "making self-inquiries of introspection”.  The dialogues of wisdom  between Yajnavalkya and Maitreyi as husband and wife in Brihadaranyaka Upanishad explores the concept of Atman (soul or self) & its undisputed relationship with God Almighty to throw light on idea of "Non dual" nature of "living creature & their Creator".

sa hovāca maitreyī, yenāha nāmtā syām, kim aha tena kuryām, yad eva bhagavān veda tad eva me brūhīti.

"Then, what is the good of all this? If one day, death is to swallow me up, and transiency is to overwhelm me, impermanence of the world is to threaten us, and if everything is to be insecure at the very start; if all that you regard as worthwhile is, after all, going to be a phantom; because it is not going to assure us as to how long it can be possessed, how it may not be taken away from us and at what time we shall be dispossessed of all the status that we have in life; if this is the uncertainty of all existence, what good can accrue to me from this that you are bestowing upon me, as if it is a great value?"

Here is a vigraha of Sage Yajnavalkya at Athur Padashala for Vedas, run by - Sri Chaturvedha Vidhya Ganapathi Trust.  Couple of photos of Veda vidyarthis at the Padashala also feature here.

Johan Frederik "Frits" Staal (1930 – 2012), a German,  was the department founder and Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and South/Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.  Staal specialized in the study of Vedic ritual and mantras, and the scientific exploration of ritual and mysticism. He was also a scholar of Greek and Indian logic and philosophy and Sanskrit grammar.

Lot of inputs extracted from Yagnavhlkya Smriti with commentary of Vijñāneśvara called ‘The  Mitākarā’,  and the notes from the gloss of Balambatta.
