Very Important Pre-script  : The first half of the post is about Sports and  injuries including a detailed one on  CSK – yet not a post on Sports   but on “மாகாயம் !!”

 

The FIFA World Cup 2026 - the 23rd edition   will be held from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. 48 teams will compete, expanded from the traditional 32-team format. 

Several key players are already under injury concern  and some have been ruled out entirely.  Main players in the injury list includes :  Brazil: Rodrygo, Eder Militao, and Estevao;  Spain: Fermin Lopez and Samu Aghehowa; Germany: Marc-André ter Stegen and Serge Gnabry; France: Hugo Ekitike; USA: Patrick Agyemang and Johnny Cardoso; Netherlands: Xavi Simons, Matthijs de Ligt, and Jerdy Schouten – there are concerns that there could be some more ! dropping out due to injuries.    

Tennis in 2026 has already seen several notable injury withdrawals and retirements, especially around the Australian Open and French Open. The most visible recent cases are Matteo Berrettini retiring at Roland Garros with a hip issue and Arthur Fils withdrawing from the French Open because of injury. Jack Draper missed the 2026 Australian Open while recovering from a bruised bone in his left arm.   

Moving on to our pet Sport – and more specifically just concluded IPL 2026 -  the Yellowee team CSK -  had a disappointing season – finishing    8th with 6 wins in 14 matches.   This year it was a raw young team and was expected to perform well.  A seam-bowling allrounder, Ramakrishna Ghosh emerged as Maharashtra's breakout player during the 2025-26 domestic season.  He made his debut for CSK in 2026 against MI, took a good catch and a wicket but was injured trying to take a diving catch  ended with a right-foot fracture.  The list of injuries for CSK was varied and long – not sure whether it had anything to do with the Health management.  Prior to the start, the pricy buy   Prashant Veer suffered a shoulder injury during a Ranji Trophy match, creating an early fitness concern.    Nathan Ellis was ruled out with a hamstring injury,   Matheesha Pathirana was also dealing with a calf strain.  As the tourney started young Ayush Mhatre started performing well but   suffered a hamstring injury and was later ruled out for the rest of the season.  Bigger hit was the injury to Jamie Overton.  Khaleel Ahmed was sidelined, worsening CSK’s bowling shortage. MS Dhoni missed the campaign due to a calf issue.  CSK’s injury list hurt them in every department: batting depth, pace bowling, and leadership continuity. The repeated disruptions forced frequent changes and made it hard for the team to settle into a stable combination.

No  post on Sports   or injuries !!  but on “காயம்! மாகாயம் !!”

காயம்  என்றால் :  அடி முதலியப்பட்டதனாலான புண், வடு.  காயத்தின் பிற அர்த்தங்கள் : உடல்,  ஆகாயம், உறைப்பு; காரம்,   பெருங்காயம், ஐங்காயம், காழ்ப்பு -முதலியன.  காயம் என்றால் ஆகாயம் என்றும் பொருள் உண்டு. தொல்காப்பியம், எழுத்ததிகாரம், புள்ளிமயங்கியலில் ‘விண் என வரூஉம் காயப் பொர் வயின்’ என்ற நூற்பா உள்ளதாம். விண் என்ற ஆகாயத்தை உணர்த்தும் பெயர்ச்சொல் என்பது பொருள்.

Minor wounds usually aren't serious, but it is important to clean them. Serious and infected wounds may require first aid followed by a visit to your doctor. You should also seek attention if the wound is deep, you cannot close it yourself, you cannot stop the bleeding or get the dirt out, or it does not heal.

Sriman Naryana in His Vamana avatar accepted gift of land, then grew in such gigantic proportions that His crown ripped through the space and extended beyond the Universe – We, the followers of Sriman Narayana knew His exploits too well and always look at His Lotus feet and there is nothing for us to think of or worry about other than our Saviour ~ the most benevolent Sriman Narayana.  Sri Peyalwar says :

அடிவட்டத்தால் அளப்ப நீண்ட - முடிவட்டம்,

காயமே இது பொய்யடா, வெறும் காற்றடைத்த பையடா’ எனும்  சித்தர் பாடல் அறிவோம்.  காயம்=உடல்; மா=பெரிய; மாகாயம் என்ற சொல் இறைவனது திருமேனியை குறிக்கும். மாகாயம் என்ற சொல்லுக்கு பருத்த உடலினை உடைய யானை என்றும் பொருள் சொல்லப் படுகின்றது  

பேயாழ்வார் தமது இந்த பாசுரத்தில் வாமனனாய்  மூவடி மண் கேட்டு - மண்ணளந்து, விண்ணளந்து மேலும் ஓரடி கேட்டு மகாபலியை ஆட்கொண்ட த்ருஷ்டாந்தத்தை ரசிக்கின்றார்.  எம்பெருமான் ஸ்ரீமந்நாரணன்  முன்னொரு காலத்தில், பூமி தானம் வாங்கிக்கொண்டு,  தாமரை மலர்ந்தாற் போலே வட்ட வடிவமாயிருக்கிற பூமியை, தனது திருவடியினால் அளப்பதற்காக (மாகாயமாய்  நின்றது) பெரிய திருமேனியாய் விஸ்வரூபம் எடுத்து  வளர்ந்து நின்ற எம்பெருமானுடைய,   நீண்ட திருவபிஷேகமானது மேலுலகங்களின் வழியாகச் சென்று  அண்ட கடாஹத்தளவாக வளர்ந்து நின்றதே !!  இஃது என்ன ஆச்சரியம்!  என எம்பெருமானின் மேன்மையை விவரிக்கின்றார்.

A ceasefire came, hostilities stopped, not the tension – and IPL 2025 resumed on May 17^th – in between some players especially foreign players have become unavailable changing the composition of the teams they represented !!  -  teams have made some temporary replacements – and some are plagued by injuries too.  Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fast bowler Mayank Yadav has sustained another back injury and is out of the last leg of IPL 2025. LSG have roped in New Zealand quick Will O'Rourke at INR 3 crore in his place.  Remember, Mayank was one of the three players LSG retained ahead of the mega auction. Returning to competitive cricket for the first time since Oct 2024, Mayank played only two matches in IPL 2025 - against Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) - before the tournament was suspended following cross-border tension between India and Pakistan. His high pace - a quality that impressed the national selectors - and accuracy earned him a special fast bowler's contract with the BCCI last year.  Sadly, he picked up a back injury that made him miss the 2024-25 domestic season after his international debut. He was recovering at BCCI's Centre of Excellence (formerly the National Cricket Academy) in Bengaluru. But his return was pushed back after he stubbed his toe against his bed leading to an infection. Upon his return, he was a much slower bowler, clocking speeds in the high-130 kph and only occasionally breaching the 140kph mark. 

A number of sports leagues face the same issue: Modern playing styles that put increased physical demands on athletes’ bodies are contributing to an increase in injuries.  It is stated that the  average NBA star player in the 2020s misses more than a quarter of each season, nearly twice the number of missed games as the 2000s, when there were roughly 10 fewer possessions per game than today’s “pace and space” era. Nearly 40% of all MLB pitchers who played in 2024 have undergone Tommy John surgery (UCL reconstruction), up from 27% in 2016, as throwing velocities and spin rates have increased. 

Tennis too has its share of woes and injuries.  A report states that there have been 37 instances on the 2025 ATP Tour of a player retiring during a match or withdrawing mid-tournament prior to a match, accounting for about 6% of all matchups. That equals the highest number at this point in the tennis calendar over the past 20 years and 50% higher than the annual average of 23.8.

Novak Djokovic retired from his Australian Open semifinal playing against Alexander Zverev with a muscle tear after one set and was met with boos from the crowd. Earlier in January, Reilly Opelka had to call it quits in the Brisbane International final after just 13 minutes of play. The injury bug has not made its way to the WTA Tour, which has seen only 23 retirements or walkovers through the 2025 Indian Wells Open, just a tad higher than the 20.6 average from the past decade. Interestingly, this outlier year in men’s tennis follows what had appeared to be a decrease in injuries.

Many a times have observed that in suburban stations, people casually cross the track, though the train could be seen at a distance ! – they mentally calculate the speed of the train without realizing that a fractional miscalculation could endanger their lives !!

 

In Cricket –  the funda is to watch the ball the time it leaves the bowlers’ hand !  There are players who hit the first ball mercilessly for a six ! – though it is stated that a batsman invariably has  0.4 seconds to react to a 90mph delivery.  Measuring the velocity of the ball through Radar Guns or Speed Guns is like measuring the speed of the moving car. This technique was discovered in 1947 by "John Baker".  Speed gun works on the principle of Doppler Effect. This Speed Gun has a receiver and a transmitter.  The   Speed Gun is placed on a high pillar near the Sight screen, from which Speed Gun sends radio wave in the direction of the pitch and calculates the speed of any object on the pitch. 

The idea is in essence basic trigonometry. Over time, you learn to associate that if a bowler releases the ball with his arm at 12 o'clock, the delivery would be full. If he releases the ball at 1 o'clock, it would be short. It's a process designed to consciously train the subconscious

 

Ever imagined how fast water can travel ! –we are not talking about river water but water being sprayed or splashed !!   The distance water travels in a stream per unit time is called the stream velocity. In general, mountain rivers are very fast, while lowland rivers are slow.   How fast is the water flowing down the stream,  can vary depending on the amount of water in the stream at any one point in time.  One need to understand the Science and concepts of :

 

•          Pressure Flow — a unit of volume moving past a certain point within a unit of time. Flow is measured in different units, depending upon its application.

•          Velocity — the distance of a given fluid within a unit of time, or how fast a fluid is moving.

•          Flow — equivalent to the velocity of the water multiplied by the radius of the pipe squared. The smaller the pipe, the greater the velocity at the same flowrate.

Sri Thelliya Singar Karthigai Swathi purappadu 2022 - நாதனை ஞாலமும் வானமும் ஏத்தும் !!

ஞாலம் என்பதற்கு உலகம் என பொருள். ஞாலுதல் என்பது தொங்குதல் என்றும் பொருள்தரும்.   உலகம் எவ்வித பற்றுக்கோடும் இன்றி அண்ட வெளியில் தொங்கிக் கொண்டிருப்பதால் ஞாலம் (உலகம்) எனப் பெயர் பெற்றது. 

ஞாலம் கருதினும் கைகூடும் காலம்

கருதி இடத்தான் செயின்

செயலை முடிப்பதற்கு ஏற்ற  காலத்தை அறிந்து இடத்தோடு பொருந்துமாறு செய்தால், உலகமே வேண்டும் எனக் கருதினாலும் கைகூடும்.  எக்காலத்தில் எவ்விடத்தில் என்பதை உறுதிப்படுத்திக் கொண்டு ஒரு குறிக்கோளைத் தொடங்கினால் அது எதுவானாலும் தவறாமல் நிறைவேறும். ஒரு செயலைச் செய்வதற்கேற்ற காலத்தை எண்ணி செய்யும் இடத்தையும் அறிந்து செய்தால் இந்த உலகத்தையே அடைய வேண்டுமென்று விழைந்தாலும் அதுவும் கைகூடும் - என்பது திருவள்ளுவர் வாய்மொழி.  

Like the lapis lazuli gem it resembles, the blue, cloud-enveloped planet the we recognize immediately from satellite pictures seems remarkably stable. Continents and oceans, encircled by an oxygen-rich atmosphere, support familiar life-forms. Yet this constancy is an illusion produced by the human experience of time. Earth and its atmosphere are continuously altered. Plate tectonics shift the continents, raise mountains and move the ocean floor while processes not fully understood alter the climate. Such constant change has characterized Earth since its beginning some 4.5 billion years ago. From the outset, heat and gravity shaped the evolution of the planet. These forces were gradually joined by the global effects of the emergence of life. Exploring this past offers us the only possibility of understanding the origin of life and, perhaps, its future.  

In its most general sense, the term "world" refers to the totality of entities, to the whole of reality or to everything that is. The nature of the world has been conceptualized differently in different fields. Some conceptions see the world as unique while others talk of a "plurality of worlds". Some treat the world as one simple object while others analyze the world as a complex made up of many parts. Theories of modality, on the other hand, talk of possible worlds as complete and consistent ways how things could have been. Phenomenology, starting from the horizon of co-given objects present in the periphery of every experience, defines the world as the biggest horizon or the "horizon of all horizons".    

In various contexts, the term "world" takes a more restricted meaning associated, for example, with the Earth and all life on it, with humanity as a whole or with an international or intercontinental scope. In this sense, world history refers to the history of humanity as a whole or world politics is the discipline of political science studying issues that transcend nations and continents. Other examples include terms such as "world religion", "world language", "world government", "world war", "world population", "world economy" or "world championship".

The tournament has been held every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War. The reigning champions are France, who won their second title at the 2018 tournament in Russia. When Qatar was drawn out of the envelope as a future host of the World Cup back in 2010, it was doubtful the majority of football fans would have been able to find it on a map.   A dozen years, $300 billion and a raft of controversy later, one of the most expensive marketing campaigns in history will culminate with the tiny Gulf state hosting a final on Sunday between Argentina and France that’s expected to be watched by half the planet.  

What next would be the inevitable question — even for a host with a seemingly bottomless pit of money. The organizers — particularly FIFA — see the event as an outright success: a record TV audience, happy fans and a burnished brand. But however much soft power Qatar has gained from the tournament, the return to normality will be an epic comedown.  After a month when over 700,000 fans descended on Doha, Qatar will go back to being relatively empty. The fans have already started to return home, and so too will vast numbers of migrant workers. Real estate agents are concerned apartments will remain unfinished, while hotels will have a glut of rooms and some stadiums will never be used again. Then there’s Qatar’s international standing, even as it supplies almost a quarter of the liquefied natural gas imports Europe is relying on to get through the winter. Before the focus of the World Cup turned to drama and upsets on the pitch, the country faced criticism about the rights of migrant workers and an aversion to LGBTQ pride symbols.  

Swami Nammalwar feels indebted and expresses his gratitude to all those – who fall at and uphold the feet of those bagavathas who are indebted, surrendered to and holding the feet of Sriman Narayana.  Here is a pasuram from Thiruvaimozhi.

தலைவனும், பூமியும் தெய்வ உலகமும் ஏத்துகிற வாசனை பொருந்திய திருத்துழாய் மலரைத் தரித்தவனும், அழகிய நீண்ட சக்கரத்தையுடைய எந்தையும், எல்லார்க்கும் உபகாரகனுமான எம்பெருமானுடைய பாதங்களை வணங்குகின்ற அடியார்களை வணங்குகின்ற அடியார்கள்தாம் சொல்லப்படுகின்ற பிறப்புகளில் எல்லாம் எம்மை அடிமை கொண்டவர்கள் ஆவார்கள்,’ என்கிறார் - சடகோபன் இந்த பாசுரத்தில்.
