Thirumylai
Sri Madhava Perumal Pavithrothsavam 2026 – yagasalai
Pre-script: though a long winding post starting with
battlefield of 1746 – No war post this !!
A war nearer home ! centuries ago – ramification of ‘War of Austrian Succession’ - stop Madras to Austria – crossing seas and multiple continents – approx 7000 km away .. and a war fought between British East India Company and French East India Company !!
According to historians, French reinforcements from Pondicherry did not sail into Madras harbour. Instead they landed on the open coast near present-day Thiruvanmiyur/Besant Nagar, where the surf permitted boats to land troops. They numbered approximately: 300 French, 700 Indian sepoys commanded by Louis Paradis. From the beach the troops marched north-west. There was no Marina Beach as we know it. Instead there were – sand dunes, scrub vegetarion, marshes, tidal channels and a wider river (Adyaru).
Their rivals the British with Nawab's Army blocked the crossing. The Nawab's son Mahfuz Khan understood the French had to cross the river. He therefore deployed nearly 10,000 cavalry and infantry on the north bank of the Adyar, stretching from San Thome toward what is now Quibble Island, with artillery covering likely crossing points.
So a battle of Adyar occurring somewhere nearer Mylapore !! The French did not build a bridge. They crossed the shallow estuary at low tide, wading through water while maintaining disciplined formations. Contemporary re-enactments place the crossing in the coastal strip between today's Adyar Estuary and Elliot's Beach. History records that in September 1746 the French fleet under La Bourdonnais captured Fort St. George from the British.
The Nawab of Arcot, Anwar-ud-din Khan, objected because neither European company technically owned Madras outright; they held it under the Nawab's authority. He ordered the French to hand over Madras. The French refused. That refusal led directly to the Battle of Adyar. French commander Louis Paradis marched from mylapore area toward Madras. Instead of remaining on the defensive, he crossed the Adyar River and attacked. The disciplined French infantry advanced in compact formations supported by well-drilled artillery. The Nawab's forces, although vastly superior in numbers, fought largely in traditional cavalry formations that proved ineffective against concentrated musket volleys and field artillery. Within a short time, the Nawab's army broke and retreated. French casualties were remarkably light, while the Nawab suffered much heavier losses.
Many historians consider the Battle of Adyar one of the most significant military engagements in early colonial India. It demonstrated European military superiority. The battle proved that disciplined infantry using coordinated musket fire and artillery could defeat armies many times their size. The French victory relied not only on Europeans but also on Indian soldiers trained in European tactics. The British quickly learned the same lesson and later developed their own large sepoy armies.
Strangely the loss in war paved the way for British expansion as they invested on Indian sepoys to defeat their own Nation and keep parts of India unified under their control. Much of the original battlefield has since been urbanised, and the river's course has changed somewhat over nearly three centuries.
Today’s
post is on this Thirumylai and an important uthsavam at this temple in the
centre of Mylapore.
In the capital of Tamil Nadu is the pristine Temple of Sri Parthasarathi Swami at Thiruvallikkeni. Though not the earliest British settlement in the Indian Peninsula, Madras possessed a peculiar interest as constituting, with the exception of the insignificant site at Armagon, the first territorial acquisition by the English in Hindustan. It is a place that predates British rule by several centuries; it was occupied by the Portuguese in 1523, which lasted until 1749, later falling into the hands of the British East India Company. It is “Mylapore” [Thiru Mayilai], a cultural hub; one of the oldest residential parts of the city, also known as VEdapuri and Mayurapuri ~ Thirumayilai has the avathara sthalam of Sri Peyalwar at Arundale Street – nearer is Sri Madhava Perumal thirukovil. Mylai is famous for Sri Kapaleeswarar temple which is connected with the S'aivite Nayanmars.
Now is the time for Thirupavithrothsavam for Sri Madhava Perumal – this morning there was yaga salai and goshti of Thirupallandu, Thiruppavai and 5th and 6th decads of Swami Nammalwar’s Thiruvaimozhi. Here are some photos of most beautiful Sri Madhava Perumal at Thirumylai taken during His pavithrothsavam.
It was
just another day at Thirumylai (not exactly) – evening time – Sannathi thiruvarathanam
– not many people around – and there was this beautiful rendition in Nadaswaram
by Thiru Mohanraj ensemble. Purely divine,
not performed for any audience, solely for
Thirumylai Sri Madhava Perumal. : https://youtu.be/8UjrBwbavNc
Think this kriti to be : “Mahalakshmi Jaganmāta” - popular composition by Papanasam Sivan, in rāga Śankarabharanam and miśra cāpu tāḷa. One well-known rendition is by N. C. Vasanthakokilam, often listed simply as “Mahalakshmi – Sankarabharanam” in recordings.
mahAlakṣmi jaganmātā

anupallavi
mahā viṣṇuvin mārbenum
maṇi pīṭhamadanil amarndaruL...
“mahālakṣmī jaganmātā manamirangi
varamaruḷ” – addressing Mahalakshmi as the
mother of the universe, bestower of grace. Śankarabharanam (Dhīraśankarabharanam) is
the 29th melakarta rāga
in Carnatic music. Its scale
corresponds to the Western major (Ionian) scale, which is why it feels very “śuddha” and
expansive, suiting a māṅgalya/maṅgala
goddess like Mahalakshmi.
• Arohana: SR2G3M1PD2N3SSR2G3M1PD2N3S
• Avarohana: SN3D2PM1G3R2SSN3D2PM1G3R2S
Śankarabharanam is a very śānta, full-bodied rāga, foundational in Carnatic, often chosen for major deities and weighty compositions, yet capable of bhakti-laden sweetness, aptly for Mahalakshmi, whose bhāva combines śrī (prosperity), karuṇā (compassion) and jaganmāta–swaroopa

For humans of this Century – the most preferred companion is a Mobile phone ! – they see, touch, search and spend life on it … around 26 years ago when this century was born, not many possessed Cell phones and the undisputed champion and cultural icon of the year 2000 was the Nokia 3310. Released in Q4 2000, it became one of the best-selling phones in history (shifting 126 million units) and is globally famous for its rugged durability, incredible battery life, and the addictive built-in game Snake. Did you use one ??
There is never a dull moment in Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam ~ amidst so many uthsavams and after the Aani brahmothsavam of Sri Azhagiya Singar, and on a day when there is no purappadu 12.7.2026 .. .. .. Allikkeni was active still. Kaliyan singing about the divyadesam calls it ‘maada maa Mayilai Thiruvallikkeni’ [singing Mylapore and Triplicane together as the place with palatial buildings !] .. .. and there was vanabhojana uthsavam of Thirumylai Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal
Not fully a Perumal post; the centre is of course Perumal and a photo being taken back in 2008 !!!
Nokia Corporation is a Finnish multinational telecommunications, information technology, and consumer electronics corporation, originally established as a pulp mill in 1865. Nokia's main headquarters are in Espoo, Finland, in the Helsinki metropolitan area. It was founded as a pulp mill and had long been associated with rubber and cables, but since the 1990s has focused on large-scale telecommunications infrastructure, technology development, and licensing. However, in recent years Nokia suffered from a series of poor management decisions and soon saw its share of the mobile phone market drop sharply.
The camera mobiles were in nascent stage in mid 2000s in the sense not many purchased fearing its higher costs – there was one model : Nokia 6120 Classic and it had 2-megapixel Camera. It was a classic candybar design, a glossy black case and curved edges with a silver trim. It had a mini-USB connection at the bottom for data transfers. It also carried place for a 256MB microSD card !
The 6120 in fact had two cameras -- a 2-megapixel one on the back
for taking photos and a lower-res one on the front for video calls. There was
an LED flash on the back and nightmode to assist taking shots in the dark. The memory card can fit
around 64 songs !! The battery life on the 6120 was simply great – one could manage four days between charges with average use of
calls and SMS. In India it was around
Rs.10000 at that time, a princely sum !!

Kapali, Kabali, Kapalee !!! are not just words ! - they are emotions in Mylapore and today on the occasion of Arubathi Moovar festival as Lord Kapaleeswarar came out – the devotion was simply hysteric.
Among others, was this troupe – SSS Mani thapset, Reddypalayam playing Parai. Do listen to this piece – it was loud, commanded attention, it was visceral, something felt in the chest raw.
As one could observe, especially towards the end, the propulsive tempo was building up to a syncopated brilliance. It was unnerving as raw energy, displaying the intense energy levels of the players and was something out of the World.
Exceptional
performance indeed !! Hats off to the troup. :

Today 15.9.2025 (too) is celebrated as Krishnashtami – mainly following Srivaishnava samprathayam at Thiruvallikkeni Sri Parthasarathi Swami thirukkovil and many other temples – the birthday of Krishna .. a few thousands years ago, Bhagwan Sree Krishnaa was born in prison at Mathura (Vada Madurai) .. Mathura, Gokul, Vrindavan, Govardhan are not mere tirtha (holy places) but Bhagavan’s own dhama (abode). In his 125 years of life, BHagwan Sri Krishna made an indelible impression upon mankind’s collective consciousness—re-educating the world about devotion and dharma as well as the ultimate reality.
“Krishnath Param Kimapi Thathvam Aham Na Jaane – I know not of any other Truth beyond Krishna.”.. Wherever there is Krishna, the master of all mystics, there will also certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power, and ultimate value education to mankind. Sri Krishna – the very name sends a thrill of joy through one who has had even a passing glimpse of His greatness. The name at once evokes memories of the divinely sweet child of Vrindavan, the blue boy clothed in pitambhara (golden yellow silks), crowned with peacock feathers and adorned with a garland of fresh flowers, the maddening beauty and love of Gopis, the stealer of hearts, the dispeller of sins, upholder of righteousness, protector of the humble and simple, and an ever-abiding friend to all those who sincerely seeks His companionship.
The song at the start "Chethi Mandaram Thulasi" is a Malayalam devotional song for Lord Krishna, o a devotee's wish to see Lord Krishna adorned with a peacock feather, yellow silk, and flower garlands (chethi, mandaram, thulasi, pichaka). The song describes his enchanting flute music, the desire to witness his form beloved by the Gopis, and the offering of a humble portion of puffed rice, soaked in tears, to the Lord. The lyrics for the devotional song "Chethi Mandaram Thulasi" was written by the famous Malayalam poet Vayalar Ramavarma.
This song was featured in 1969 movie Adimakal, sung by P Susheela to the music of G Devarajan. Adimakal (transl. Slaves) directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan starred Sathyan, Prem Nazir, Sheela and Sharada. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Pamman . The film was remade in Hindi as Intezar (1973) in Telugu as Chilakamma Cheppindi (1977) and in Tamil as Nizhal Nijamagiradhu (1978).
On 14.9.2025 Sree Krishnashtami
was celebrated at Thirumylai Sri Madhava Perumal thirukovil being Sri Vaikanasa

Krishna - select pasurams of Periyazhvar
