This morning around 5.50 am was standing at Peyalwar Koil Street – was fortunate to have darshan of Thirumanjanakudam

 

In this video one could see kainkaryabarar Palappur Murali (65+ with some health issues) carrying the kudam filled with water for purification; Prakash playing Nadaswaram and Nagaraj on thavil – with couple of vehicles without patience trying to nudge over !!

 

Mind reminisced those days of 1970s – when as a young kid, I used to go to MAV house for divyaprabantha santhai  - those days the thirumanjana kudam procession would be far too grand – carried on Azhwan the majestic elephant of the temple from Kairavini pushkarini.

A powerful message from   Alwar.  What should one do in this World without whiling away time ~ other than chanting the names of Sriman Narayana, the only Saviour who is worshipped in the famed Thiruvarangam Periyakoil. It is He (in Ramavathar) parted the Ocean with a single bow and relieved the World of its trouble by killing the Rakshas chief in the battle.  Just chant His names all the time.  

~ and today  19^th Dec 2025 [Margazhi 4]   is the right day to know something about this Azhwar who was born in Chozhanadu at a place called Mandangudi.

~ the introductory lines to his prabandham Thirumalai by  Thiruvaranga Perumal Araiyar.  ஸ்ரீ திருவரங்கப் பெருமாள் அரையர் ஸ்வாமி அருளிச் செய்த தனியன்:   

தமிழ் ஒரு இனிய மொழி.  நம் ஆழ்வார்களோ  அந்த அமிழ்தில் திளைத்தவர்கள்.  இங்கே வண்டு  திணர்த்த வயல் என்றதும் வண்டுகள் நிறைந்து இருக்கும் கழனிகள் என போறும் சூழற்க்க ;  திணர்த்தல் என்றால் -  நெருக்கமாதல் ; கனமாகப் படிந்திருத்தல்.  இதன்படியே - வண்டல் மண் கனமாகப் படிந்து அதிலே  வளமான பயிர்கள் விளையும் வயல்கள் சூழ்ந்த திருவரங்கத்தில் எழுந்தருளி இருக்கும் அரங்கநாதப் பெருமானை துயிலெழுப்பப் பாடல்கள் அருளவே (ஒரு சூரியன் போல) ஒளியோடு தோன்றிய, நிலைபெற்ற பெருமை வாய்ந்த, தொண்டரடிப்பொடியாழ்வார் அவதரித்த பழமையான தலம் திருமண்டங்குடி என்று நான்மறையாளர்கள் பகர்வர்.

இன்று மன்னிய சீர் மார்கழியில் கேட்டை திருநக்ஷத்திரம்.   சோழநாட்டில் திருமண்டங்குடி என்ற சிற்றூரில் பராபவ வருடம், மார்கழி மாதம், கேட்டை நட்சத்திரத்தில்  பெருமானின் வைஜயந்தி வனமாலையின் அம்சமாகக் கருதப்படும் தொண்டரடிப்பொடி ஆழ்வார் அவதரித்த தினம்,   ஆழ்வார் சாற்றுமுறை இன்று :   முதல் ஆயிரத்தில் திருமாலை 45 பாசுரங்களும் திருப்பள்ளியெழுச்சி 11-ம் பாடியுள்ளார். எளிய தமிழில் உள்ளத்தைக் கொள்ளை கொள்ளும் பாசுரங்கள் தொண்டரடிப் பொடியுடையவை. இவர் பாடிய  தலங்கள் ~ : திருவரங்கமும்  நாம் பார்க்க முடியாத பரமபதமும்.  

தொண்டரடிப்பொடி என்பது ஒரு வகையான புனைபெயர். வைணவ மரபில் பகவானின் அடியார்களின் திருவடிகளின் தூசுகூட புனிதமானது என்கிற நம்பிக்கையின் அதீத வடிவமாக தொண்டரடிப்பொடி என வைத்துக் கொண்டார்.  இவரது இயற்பெயர் விப்ர நாராயணன்.  திவ்ய பிரபந்தத்தில் பிறிதோர் இடத்தில கூட 'இப் பாததூளி படுதலால் இவ்வுலகம் பாக்கியம் செய்ததே' என்று வருகிறது.  அனுதினமும் காலை எல்லா திவ்ய தேசங்களிலும் எம்பெருமானை பள்ளி எழுப்பும், திருப்பள்ளியெழுச்சி இவரது பாசுரம். 

The great saint by name Vipra Narayanar, born at Thirumandankudi also known as Bhaktanghri renu later came to be hailed as  ‘Thondaradippodi Alvar’ due to his devotion to the devotees of Lord. Thondaradipodi rendered 55 verses in praise of Lord Ranganatha - 10 verses of Thirupalli Yezhuchi and 45 verses of Thiru Maalai. Thirupalliyezhuchi is recited in every temple to wake up the Lord and rendered during kalasanthi in the morning.  Here is a pasuram from his Thirumalai : 

ஊரிலேன் காணியில்லை உறவு மற்றொருவரில்லை

பாரில்நின் பாதமூலம் பற்றிலேன் பரம மூர்த்தி

காரொளி வண்ணனே என் கண்ணனே கதறுகின்றேன்

ஆருளர்க் களைகணம்மா அரங்கமா நகருளானே. 

Thondaradipodi Azhwar in his emotive address to Lord Ranganatha laments his misfortune of not having born in divyadesams; has no relatives, nothing to claim for and have acquaintance with the place of the Lord.  Oh Lord of dark radiance, I have not even secured your feet – I scream and call your names and there can be none other that the Great Lord of Thiruvarangam ~ Lord Ranganatha who owns the Universe and resides at Srirangam (described as ‘Arangamaanagar’) who can protect me… 

                           Thondaradippodi Aazhwar  immersed in bakthi sung everyday to wake up the Lord.  He sang about Thiruvarangam  and Paramapatham.  Thondaradippodi Alvar was born as Vipra Narayanar  in a small village by name 'Thiru mandangudi' in Prabhava year, Margazhi month, Krishna chaturthi, in Kettai (Jyestha) Nakshatram (star).   This Thirumandangudi is in Chozha nadu near Kumbakonam,  the nearest landmark being Thiruvarooran sugars factory.   

            At this place, Lord Ranganatha is seen in a rare standing posture.  Azhwar dedicated himself to serving the God at Thiruvarangam and sought darshan of the Supreme Lord Ranganatha – who yielded by providing him a special standing darshan.  It would appear that the same Lord Ranganatha of Sri Rangam has just stood up to provide darshan to His devotees here.  Here at Mandangudi, we have Lord Ranganatha in a standing posture alongwith Sridevi and Bhumadevi.  The Uthsavar is Azhagiya Manavalar. There is separate sannadhi for the Thayar also.

திருமயிலை எனும் அற்புத க்ஷேத்திரத்திலே 2019ல்   - திரு மாதவப்பெருமாள் திருக்கோவிலிலே - மன்னியசீர் மார்கழி கேட்டையில் தொண்டரடிப்பொடி ஆழ்வார் சாற்றுமுறை வைபவத்தில் - ஸ்தலதிபதியான ஸ்ரீ பேயாழ்வாரும், அன்றைய நாயகன் - விப்ர நாராயணனும் எழுந்து அருளி இருக்க - ஸ்ரீமாதவப்பெருமாள் அலங்காரமாக திருமஞ்சனம் கண்டு அருளினார். அந்த அவசரத்தில், ஸ்ரீ மாதவர் தம் திருமேனி அழகை தரிசிக்க வாய்ப்பு ஏற்பட்டது.  a video of Azhwar thirumanjanam at Thirumylai Sri Madhavaperumal thirukovil of 25.12.2019. :

Tailpiece :  ** Thiru Arooran Sugars Ltd was incorporated in 1954, setting up a sugar factory at Vadapathimangalam, Thanjavur with crushing capacity of 1200 tonnes fo cane per day.  In 1990, they expanded their crushing capacity setting up a new mill at Thirumandangudi, Papanasam Taluk, Thanjavur.   Things are not well as the factory accumulated huge losses and in recent times sugarcane farmers have been on protest seeking Govt intervention on disbursal of pending dues totaling several crores.

Kavimani Desigavinayagam Pillai (27 July 1876 – 26 September 1954) was a renowned Tamil poet from the village of Theroor in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India. His works encompass a wide range of genres including devotional songs, literary and historical poetry, children's songs, nature poems, social themes, and nationalistic verses. He was particularly noted for his contributions to children's literature in Tamil. Theroor, his birthplace is in Kanniyakumari.

தேரூர் (Theroor), இந்தியாவின் தமிழ்நாடு மாநிலத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள கன்னியாகுமரி மாவட்டம், அகத்தீஸ்வரம் வட்டத்தில் இருக்கும் ஒரு பேரூராட்சி ஆகும்.  தேரூக்கு, கிழக்கில் மருங்கூர் ஊராட்சி, 3 கி.மீ.; மேற்கில் நாகர்கோவில் 8.10 கி.மீ.; வடக்கில் வெள்ளமடம் 2 கி.மீ.; தெற்கில் சுசீந்திரம் 2 கி.மீ. தொலைவில் உள்ளன. 

சுதந்திரப் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபடுத்திக்கொண்டு பல கவிதைகள் பாரதியார் வழியில் பாடியவர் கவிஞர்  கவிமணி தேசிய விநாயகம் பிள்ளை .   காந்தி, பாரதி, போன்ற விடுதலைப் போராட்டத் தலைவர்கள் குறித்து கவிதைகள் புனைந்தவர்,  ஆராய்ச்சி, வரலாறு, அறிவியல், வாழ்வியல், குழந்தைகளுக்கு நல்லவை அறிவுறுத்துதல், இயற்கை, இறை வழிபாடு என பல துறைகளில் பாடல்கள் புனைந்தவர் ,  பெண்ணடிமைத் தனத்தை எதிர்த்தவர். 

கவிமணி தேசிக விநாயகம் பிள்ளை, 20ம் நூற்றாண்டில் குமரி மாவட்டத்திலுள்ள தேரூரில் வாழ்ந்த ஒரு புகழ் பெற்ற கவிஞர். பக்திப் பாடல்கள், இலக்கியம் பற்றிய பாடல்கள், வரலாற்று நோக்குடைய கவிதைகள், குழந்தைப் பாடல்கள், இயற்கைப் பாட்டுகள், வாழ்வியல் போராட்ட கவிதைகள், சமூகப் பாட்டுகள், தேசியப் பாட்டுகள், வாழ்த்துப் பாக்கள், கையறு நிலைக் கவிதைகள், பல்சுவைப் பாக்கள் என விரிந்த தளத்தில் செயல்பட்டவர்.  சிவதாணுப்பிள்ளை -ஆதிலட்சுமி தம்பதியர்க்கு இரண்டு பெண் குழந்தைகளை அடுத்து மூன்றாவதாகத் தேசிக விநாயகம் பிறந்தார். இரண்டு பெண்களுக்குப்பின் பிறந்த ஆண் மகவுக்குத் தான் வணங்கும் தேசிக விநாயகரின் பெயரை வைத்தார் சிவதாணுப்பிள்ளை. ஒன்பதாவது வயதில் தன் தந்தையை இழந்தார். எம். ஏ. படித்த கவிமணி பின் ஆசிரியர் பயிற்சி படித்து, தான் படித்த பள்ளியிலேயே ஆசிரியர் ஆனார். உமையம்மை எனும் பெண்ணை 1901ல் மணம் முடித்தார்.   

மலரும் மாலையும், ஆசியஜோதி, உமர்கய்யாம் பாடல்கள், நாஞ்சில் நாட்டு மருமக்கள் வழி மான்மியம் ஆகியவை கவிமணியின் கவிதைத் திறத்துக்கு முன்னுதாரணம். சிறந்த மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளரான கவிமணி எழுதிய ’தேவியின் கீர்த்தனங்கள்’ என்ற இசைத் தொகுப்பில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ள பாடல்களை இப்போதும் பல இன்னிசை வித்தகர்கள் மேடையில் பாடி வருகின்றனர். கௌதம புத்தரின் வரலாற்றையும், அவர்தம் கொள்கைகளையும் விளக்கும் ஆசியாவின் ஜோதி எனப்படும் நூல், பெருந்துறவு எனும் துணைத்தலைப்புடன், 1832-ஆம் ஆண்டு பிறந்த எட்வின் அர்னால்டு எனும் ஆங்கிலேயக் கவிஞரால் ஆங்கிலத்தில் கவிதை நடையில் எழுதப்பட்டு,  உலகின் பெரும்பாலான மொழிகளில் மொழி பெயர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இம்மூல நூலைத் தமிழில் தேசிக விநாயகம் பிள்ளை, ஆசிய ஜோதிஎனும் தலைப்பில் மொழி பெயர்த்துள்ளார்.   

குழந்தைகளுக்காக பல எளிமையான, இனிமையான கவிதைகளைப் படைத்தவர் கவிமணி. குழந்தைகளுக்காக அவர் இயற்றிய பாடல்களில் பல தமிழகப் பாடப் புத்தகங்களில் பாடங்களாக இடம் பெற்றுள்ளன.

துள்ளிக் குதிக்குது  கன்றுக்குட்டி

அம்மா என்றது  வெள்ளைப்பசு – உடன்

அண்டையில் ஓடுது கன்றுக்குட்டி”

எளிமையும், இனிமையும் கொண்ட இந்த பாடல் குழந்தைகளுக்கு பிற உயிர்களின் உணர்வுகளையும், அன்பையும் எளிதாக விளக்கும். கவியின் மணிமொழிகளாக இவரது கவிதையில்  கருத்தும், நயமும் ஒலித்ததால் தமிழறிஞர்கள் குழு அவருக்கு கவிமணி என்ற பட்டத்தை பரிந்துரை செய்தது. 1940-ல் சென்னை பச்சையப்பன் கல்லூரியில் உமாமகேஸ்வரம் பிள்ளை இவருக்கு ‘கவிமணி’ பட்டம் வழங்கினார். ‘தேசிய விநாயகத்தின்      கவிப்பெருமையை தினமும் கேட்பது என் செவிப்பெருமை’ என நாமக்கல் கவிஞர் பாராட்டியுள்ளார்.  1954-ம் ஆண்டு, கவிமணி தனது எழுபத்தி எட்டாவது வயதில் தனது மனைவியின் ஊராகிய புத்தேரி என்கிற ஊரில்   மறைந்தார். 

 

Kavimani Desigavinayagam Pillai was also an epigraphist and essayist, who had published research papers based on his studies in Tamil and English. One of his famous essays was on the Chola period inscription, Kanthalur Salai Kalamarutharuli, which talks about Raja Raja’s battle against the Chera kingdom. 

The battle of Kandalur salai (c. 988 CE), was a naval engagement of the Cholas under Rajaraja I (985—1014 CE) against the "salai" at Kandalur in south Kerala.  The exact location of Kandalur—somewhere south Kerala—is a subject of scholarly debate. The above (988 CE) event is sometimes assumed to be identical with the "conquest of Vizhinjam by a general of Rajaraja [I]", before the "burning of Lanka", described in the Tiruvalangadu Grant/Plates. The phrase "Kandalur salai kalamarutta" is again used as a title with distinction of three other Chola emperors also (Rajendra, Rajadhiraja and Kulottunga).

 

இராஜராஜ சோழன் ஆட்சி முறையில் மட்டுமின்றி, அரசியல் நெறிமுறைகளிலும் சில புதிய போக்குகளை உருவாக்கினார்; இராஜராஜ சோழனின் முதன்மையான வெற்றி காந்தளூர்ச்சாலை கலமறுத்தருளிய நிகழ்வே!    இம்மன்னனின் நான்காவது ஆட்சி ஆண்டிலிருந்து (கி.பி. 988) இந்த அடைமொழி இராஜராஜனின் கல்வெட்டுகளில் காணப்படுகிறது. “சாலை கலமறுத்தளிய கோராஜகேசரி வன்மரான ஸ்ரீ ராஜராஜ தேவன்” என்றும், “காந்தளூர்ச் சாலை கலமறுத்தருளிய ஸ்ரீ ராஜராஜ தேவன்” என்றும் இரண்டு விதமாகக் கல்வெட்டுகளில் காணப்படுகின்றன.  கலமறுத்து என்பது “சேரர்களின் கப்பல்களை அழித்து, அதாவது சேரர்களின் கடற்படைப் பலத்தைத் தகர்த்து” என்று சிலர் பொருள் கொண்டுள்ளனர். கலமறுத்தல் என்பது வில்லங்கம் தீர்த்தல் என்ற பொருளில் பயன்படுத்தப்படுவதும் உண்டு.
