Sri Parthasarathi Brahmothsavam 2019 ~ ther thirumbukal purappadu

Today, 25th Apr 2019 - is day 7 of Sri Parthasarathi perumal   Brahmothsavam – the grand Thiruther [chariot]…..

Till the time of its acquisition by the British in 17th century, Triplicane was a  village along with adjacent village of Pudupakkam.  Its history is closely linked to the iconic Sri Parthasarathi swami temple.  After Triplicane passed into the East India company’s hands in 1676 by a firman of Sultan of Golconda, the company leased it to its chief merchant Kasi Veeranna.  Triplicane figured prominently during the invasion of the Carnatic in 1740.  In Sept 1746, when the French Commander La Bourdannais attacked Madras, a body of French troops encamped on the east side of the temple.  In a rough sketch plan of Madras about 1746 the grand Pagoda of Triplicane, the temple tank and French embankments have all been marked writes Ranganadham Chetty in History of Triplicane book compiled in 1948.

In the latter half of 1749, Madras was finally handed over to the English.  Triplicane, thereafter became the residential  suburb of English merchants who built several garden houses along or near  the south bank of the Cooum, then called as Triplicane river. The modern day Triplicane (the temple) has four arches on each direction.  Sri Parthasarathi visits these arches on some occasions – He passes through the North arch at Nalla thambi St on Masi magam day; Southern arch – during Ekkattuthangal, Kodai Uthsava sarrumurai .. on thiruther (Sri Parthasarathi & Sri Narasimhar on 7th day evening of their respective Brahmothsavams) visit the arch on the Eastern side i.e., on beach road.

On the day of thiruther,  Sri Parthasarathi (today) and Lord Thelliya Singar (during Ani brahmothsavam)  remain in the Thiruther  till evening during which time Bakthas can ascend and have darshan.  In the evening occurs the usual ‘pathi ulavuthal’ and purappadu, after which ‘thotta thirumanjanam’ would take place.  This used to happen in the cool Vasantha Mantapam situate in Venkata Rangam Street – unfortunately, this is no longer there and thirumanjanam takes place in the Andal neeratta mantapam now a days.

In the evening  after   ‘pathi ulavuthal’; there occurs the   purappadu till the eastern entrance in Sunkuwar Street on the Marina beach road. One of the few occasions whence Perumal has purappadu outside the precincts of Mada veethi and Kulakkarai.  Here are some photos of the Thiru ther thirumbukal  purappadu

Thiruvallikkeni Sri Parthasarathi Hanumantha vahanam 2019

Lord Rama descended on earth for the purpose of upholding righteousness and rewarding virtue. The Greatest of  Ithihasa purana ‘Sri Ramayanam’  is the undiluted history of the Greatest Person who descended on this Universe.. .. ..   ~ and there is also the  great character – a warrior, mightily powerful, whose body was as hard as a diamond, whose speed equalled those of fastest flying eagles, who possessed great wisdom, who could organize a group of roaming ones, who can jump hundreds of miles, yet who remained at the feet of his Master, totally committed thinking of their welfare alone – unassuming, yet capable of telling the right things at the right moment – that is Pavana Puthra Hanuman – Aanjaneya, who is called ‘siriya thiruvadi’ – bearer of Lord Rama – who carried Rama on his shoulders during the war in which the demon was killed.

The son of Vayu – Hanumar is the epitome of great virtues ~  a great character – a warrior, mightily powerful, whose body was as hard as a diamond, whose speed equalled those of fastest flying eagles, who possessed great wisdom, who could organize a group of roaming ones, who can jump hundreds of miles, yet who remained at the feet of his Master, totally committed thinking of their welfare alone – unassuming, yet capable of telling the right things at the right moment – that is PavanaPuthra Hanuman.

The mighty Hanuman excelled in his role as emissary -   Hanuman was destined to bigger deeds – of organizing an army comprising of monkeys in search of Sita, his great leap into the sea, crossing it and reaching the fortified Lanka; slaying wicked demon and meeting Sita at Ashoka vanam; sitting majestically before the King Ravana and burning the whole of Lanka ……… more than all these, the one role he relished most was carrying the ‘Ithihasa Purush’ on his shoulders and thus earning the title ‘Siriya Thiruvadi’ – the carrier of Lord Sri Rama.

As he traversed the samudra and landed at Lanka, in search of Sita Mata, he trailed destruction killing demons and devastating the property of Ravana.  Getting the news of the power of Hanuman,  Ravana ordered Rakshasas known as Kinkaras, Valmiki describes them to be 80000 – mighty, big and powerful demons. They too were killed – later as  Hanuman decided to stop the fighting and meet Ravana, he was over-powered  and taken to the courtyard of Ravana where he introduced himself thus,

My name is Hanuman, born to the mighty Vayu.  I came here searching for Seetha matha, I hopped over 100 yojana wide ocean and as I roamed around, I saw the daughter of Janaka in your house  ..    …… ……….

Today 23rd Apr 2019   is the 5th day of Brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni.  In the morning it was ‘NachiyarThirukolam’ and in the evening it was ‘ Hanumantha vahanam’…..  Aanjaneyar with all his might,  always exhibited the rare qualities of kindness, humility, and deep attachment to Lord Rama.  The selfless spirit  of Hanuman  was rewarded by Lord Ram by stating that ‘whenever I am remembered, people will remember you too.’

Sri ParthaSarathi Swami in His resplendent splendour enraptured His devotees with darshan on  ‘HanumanthaVahanam’  which was a great sight to behold……..

Sri Parthasarathi Brahmothsavam 2019 ~ Surya Prabhai

It is in fact  a ball of gas (92.1 percent hydrogen and 7.8 percent helium) held together by its own gravity. It is  4,500,000,000 years old. That's a lot of zeroes. That’s four and a half billion.  Going by what other do, i.e., burning  for about nine or 10 billion years – it can be said tobe halfway through its life. So no worries, it still has about 5,000,000,000—five billion (500 crores !)—years to go.  It is the SUN. When those five billion years are up, the Sun will become a red giant. That means the Sun will get bigger and cooler at the same time. When that happens, it will be different than the Sun we know today. As a red giant, our Sun will become about 2,000 times brighter than it is now!   Compared with the billions of other stars in the universe,  Sun  is remarkable. But for Earth and the other planets that revolve around it, the sun is a powerful center of attention.

The Sun, at the heart of our solar system, is a yellow dwarf star, a hot ball of glowing gases. Its gravity holds the solar system together, keeping everything from the biggest planets to the smallest particles of debris in its orbit.  In what is being considered a particularly rare event, scientists are projecting that the Sun will be an unusually cool customer by the year 2050. Though to the common man,  the Sun would continue to look the same way as we have seen,  Sun goes through regular cycles of solar minimums and solar maximums, and that way,  a particularly cool solar minimum is on the way.  ~ that sounds good for the Chennaites sulking hot weather !

The Sun god is driven by a seven-horsed Chariot depicting the seven days of the week.  Going by Upanishad, their names are : Gayatri, Brhati, Usnik, Jagati, Tristup, Anustup and Pankti.  The charioteer of Surya is Aruna, who is also personified as the redness that accompanies the sunlight in dawn and dusk. Aruna was born to Vinatai and Sage Kashyapa….. the other son is the most illustrious Periya Thiruvadi (Sri Garuda Azhwar) ~ to Aruna was born Jatayu and Sampati, who are mentioned in the epic Ramayana.  The chariot of Sun travels at a speed of 3,400,800 yojanas calculated as 27,206,400 miles in a muhurtha.

At Thiruvallikkeni, in the grand Brahmothsavam of Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman   on day 4 morning it is - Surya Prabhai representing the Sun chariot pulled by 7 horses.   The radiance of Sun would sure get overshadowed by the brilliance of Perumal.  Centuries ago, Thiruvallikkeni was such a pleasant garden with dense vegetation that Thirumangai Azhwar  described it as   இரவியின் கதிர்கள் நுழைதல் செய்து அறியா திருவல்லிக்கேணி” ~ the Thiruvallikkeni where the rays of Sun  have not ventured inside……today, it is a concrete jungle with so many flats, vehicles and over-crowded that there is not proper space for the Perumal purappadu – of course in tune with its older leanings, cattle still remain……

The forces of nature as observed and seen – the sky, fire, Oceans, mountains, the hot Sun, cool Moon, rain bearing clouds, eight directions, the Universe, the open that surrounds the galaxies  - all are manifestations of Lord Sriman Narayana.

Lesser mortals like us need not worry  about the future uncertainties, bad things and  sins of life – Thirumazhisai Azhwar shows us the path of having in our hearts – that beautiful Lord Krishna reclining on the riverside of the holy Kaveri, who will protect us all the time.  Here are some photos of Lord Sri Parthasarathi   in Surya prabhai at Thiruvallikkeni.

Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman Hamsa vahanam 2019

On  third day of  Brahmothsavam of Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman this day (21.4.2019)) – it is Garuda vahanam in the morning and  ‘Hamsa Vahanam’ in the evening.  The Thiruvallikkeni Hamsa vahanam is one of the heaviest among the vahanams.  The bird Hamsa  is known for its purity and powers.  Thirumangai Mannan in his ‘Thirunedunthandagam’ draws a reference to the Hamsa bird.

Milk is a nutrient-rich, white liquid food produced by the mammary glands of mammals. It is the primary source of nutrition for infant mammals. Early-lactation milk contains colostrum, which carries the mother's antibodies to its young and can reduce the risk of many diseases. It contains many other nutrients  including protein and lactose.  As an agricultural product, dairy milk, is extracted from farm animals.   Human  milk consumption has played a key role in global economic and agricultural developments for over 10,000 years. Given its popularity, cow's milk has been the subject of numerous scientific studies in recent history.

A lamellae  in cell biology, is used to describe numerous plate or concentric layers or disc-like structures at both a intra-cellular, cellular, tissue and higher level. Granums in chloroplast are interconnected by intergranal lamellae. They are the sites of photosystem I. Simply put, lamellae may be considered as multiple parallel or concentric layers of membranes as in chlorophyll  -  relevance here ?!?

The Hamsa, vahanam  of Lord Saraswathi  is a familiar leitmotif in Indian art, literature, sculpture and textiles. It is an aquatic bird that resembles a goose or a swan. It is reputed to eat pearls and to be able to separate milk from water and drink only pure milk.  The Hamsa represents the perfect  harmony between spirituality and life.  Hamsam is attributed qualities of  purity, detachment, divine knowledge, cosmic breath (prana) and highest spiritual accomplishment.

Water birds separate good water from the bad water. They have a sieve like structure (lamellae) in its mouth which separates water from mud. Probably this is what leads to the belief that Swans can separate milk from water and drink only milk, or perhaps they really can. In Sanskrit Ksheera means milk and pure water.

Here are some photos of Sri Parthasarathi Perumal in Hamsa vahanam.
