Sri Ramanujar Uthsavam - Vellai Sarruppadi - day 6 at Thiruvallikkeni – 2015

6th day of Udayavar Uthsavam - Vellai Sarruppadi

"தஸ்மை ராமானுஜார்யாய நம: பரமயோகினே" ~ we fall at the feet of the Greatest of Acharyas who is hailed as the King of all Sages.   The annual Uthsavam of Emperumanar (Udayavar / Ramanujar] is set to culminate on 24th April 2015  [Chithirai 11] which  is ‘Chithiraiyil seiya Thiruvadirai’  [Thiruvadhirai Nakshathiram in the Tamil month of Chithirai].

Sri Perumpudur Emperumanaar
-and Udayavar Thiruvallikkeni

Today , is the 6th  day of the Uthsavam  and in the morning,  Sri Ramanujar as seen in the photo above -  gives darshan astride a horse adorning  pure white silk dress.  Confounding !!!! ….  Swami Ramanujar is a sanyasi – in fact named Ethirajar (Yathi Rajar) ~  the Emperor of all saints.  How and why white dress being worn by a Sanyasi !!!
The 6th day celebration is known as  “Vellai Sathupadi” a symbolic tradition when our Great Acharyar dons white garment and is seen without tridandam.  Symbolic of the travail and travel that Ramanujar had to undertake donning the dress of a ‘grahastha’ instead of his reverred kashaya.   History has it that Chozha king Kulothunga  ordered Acharyar to subscribe to the view of prevalence of Shiva;  Kuresar donned the orange robes of Sanyasi, visited the court of the King and had his eyes plucked out; Periya Nambi lost his life.. !

Swami Emperumanar travelled along the course of river Kaveri, went out of Cholanadu adorning white dress and went places,  reached Thondanur, where he constructed a huge lake; thence reached Melukote (Thirunarayanapuram) in Mandya district, where he performed many religious discourses and brought in disciplined ways of temple management.    More was to happen as Udayavar travelled to Delhi to the Court of Delhi sultan where the uthsava vigraham of "Ramapriyan" had been taken by the muslim ruler. The vigraham when invited by Udayavar walked on its own and sat on the lap of Udayavar.

Marking this, on sixth day of Udayavar Uthsavam - Emperumanar  alights Kuthirai vahanam donning white silk. At Sriperumpudur, his Delhi visit symbolises visit to a place on way to Kanchi. Similar festivity takes place at Triplicane also.

By some historical accounts, these events took place at his ripe age around 80.  For those who fall at the feet of Udayavar and who takes care of the disciples of Udayavar, there would never be any hardship.

Ramar Padam at Rameswaram - in need of urgent repairs !!

Rameswaram, is a town and a second grade municipality in the Ramanathapuram district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on Pamban Island separated from mainland by the Pamban channel and is about 50 kilometres from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar, at the very tip of the Indian peninsula. According to Hindu mythology, this is the place from where Lord  Rama built a bridge, across the sea to Lanka to rescue Sitadevi  from her abductor Ravana.

Rameswaram is the closest point to reach Sri Lanka and geological evidence suggests that the bridge [now known as  Adam’s bridge]  was a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka.  The history of Rameswaram is centred around the island being a transit point to reach Sri Lanka (Ceylon historically) and the presence of Ramanathaswamy Temple. The Chola king Rajendra Chola I (1012 – 1040 CE) had a control of the town for a short period. During the early 15th century, the present day Ramanathapuram, Kamuthi and Rameswaram were included in the Pandya dynasty.  The Sethupathis, the breakaway from Madurai Nayaks, ruled Ramanathapuram.

Of the places of significance is “Sri Ramar Padam” also known as Gandhamathana parvatham, the place from where Hanuman jumped to Srilanka and the place visited by Lord Rama Himself before embarking on the voyage to Srilanka.  This place has the ‘footprint of Lord’ and is considered sacred.   This being on a high altirude in Rameswaram, offers scenic view of the surroundings and perhaps those with great vision were able to see Lanka from here.

Dinamalar and malaimalar report that the foundation of this historic temple is in poor shape with cracks appearing in many places.  A portion of the pavement near the foundation has caved in and needs immediate repairs.  Devotees are sad about the maintenance of such puranic places and fervently hope that HR&CE Department which is the custodian and revenue keeper of all Hindu temples of Tamilnadu takes some immediate action.

PS: Here is the report of Malaimalar reproduced :

: Ramar Padam - Malai Malar

Sri Udayavar Uthsavam 2015 .... Nummi Ramanusan !!

Hail Ramanuja ~ Iramanusan ennu sollumine !!

Today 15th Apr 2015 [Chithirai 2]  is Sadaya nakshathiram in the month of Chithirai and t he annual Uthsavam of Emperumanar (Udayavar / Ramanujar] commences today.
Bhagwad Ramanuja with his aesthetic beautiful interpretations occupies the central place.  Sri Ramanujar hailed as Udayavar, Emperumanar, Bashyakarar, Ilayazhwaar amongst other names was born in the year 1017 at Sri Perumpudur on ‘Thiruvathirai’ thirunakshathiram in the month of Chithirai.

The grand sarrumurai ‘Chithiraiyil seiya Thiruvadirai’  [Thiruvadhirai Nakshathiram in the Tamil month of Chithirai] falls on Friday, 24th April 2015.

The greatest reformer Sri  Ramanuja gave us many vedantic treatises:  Sri Bashyam, Vedarta sangraha, Vedanta deepa, Vedanta sara, the three Gadyams and more.  Blessed are the people, who regularly recite the 108 songs rendered by his disciple Thiruvarangathu Amuthanar known as “Ramanuja Noorranthathi”.

Due to balalayam, there is no purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni and thousands of devotees are missing the grand festival.  Here are a couple of photos of our Acharyar taken in 2008.

Thiruvahindrapuram Swami Manavala Mamunigal sannathi

Thiruvahindrapuram temple is a beautiful Divyadesam situated near Cuddalore.  The Moolavar here is Devanatha Perumal and Thayar is  Hemabjavalli.  The Uthsavar here is known as ‘Moovaraagiya Oruvan’- going by the mangalasasanam of Thirumangai Mannan in Thirumozhi.  The river that flows in front of the temple is considered very sacred, having been brought by Garuda himself and called ‘Vraja nathi’.   The temple follows VAdagalai sampradhayam.

மொய்கொள் மாதவி சண்பகம் முயங்கிய முல்லையங் கொடியாட,

Kaliyan describes this place as beautiful orchard having dense Kurukkathi bowers mingling with Senbagam trees; twined with Mullai creepers and lotus filling water tanks ~all at the place of the Lord who swallowed the Seven Worlds and took rest on the fig leaf – the true Deiya Nayakan revealing Himself to the devotees at this holy place called ‘Thiruvahindrapuram’

Swami DEsikan lived here for 4 decades and did many kainkaryams to this Lord.  There is a Hayagriva temple atop the hill opposite the Deiva Naayagan temple.  Hayagriva brought back the vedic scriptures from the demon and this place is considered to be the ‘place of knowledge’.  Lord Hayagreeva bestows knowledge and many start their education for their children [aksharabyasam] here.

Nearer the temple is the centuries old sannathi for  Acharyar Manavalamamunigal,  administered by Swami Manavalamamunigal Sannidhi trust.  This Sannidhi is consummate in all respects (including Vahanas, Thiruther, Kannadi arai.]  Mamunigal is known as ‘Yathindra Pravanar’ arising out of his irresistible attachment to the lotus feet of Sri Ramanujar known as ‘Yatheendrar’.  Sri  Manavala Mamunigal is the incarnation of Adisesha.    His patent style was to elucidate the pramanams fully   ‘following the words of the Purvarcharyas without deviating a wee bit’.   He filled  his vyakhyana granthas with the words of purvAcharyas.  As followers of Mamunigals, duty thus is cast on us to understand the significance of preserving, maintaining, supporting and following the rituals and customs associated with all our traditional Temples.

For a Srivaishnavaite, Kainkaryam is essential; Selfless and unconditional “kainkaryam i.e., service to Lord” cleanses the soul of the performer. Every year the Srimath Mamunigal Mahotsavam is celebrated for ten days.  Here are some photos of monthly thirunakshitra uthsavam held at this sannathi – photos courtesy  - Sri Mamandur Govindarajan Swami.  Photos 1 and last two  credit : Sri Kidambhi Mukundhan Swami.

Thiru Mayilai Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal Swarna Garuda Vahanam 2015

Today [7th April 2015]  is day 3 of the Brahmothsavam of Sri Mayooravalli sametha Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal.  This morning Sri Kesava Perumal had purappadu in Garuda vahanam. Hundreds of people waited to have the glimpse of Lord on Garuda at the Gopura vassal, as He came out of the Temple.  It is brand new Golden Garuda vahanam [Swarna Garuda vaganam], made for the Lord by the Trustees under Sri NC Sridhar.

Garuda was born to Sage Kashyapa and Vinathai. Garuda is depicted as having the golden body of a strong person, white face, powerful wings,  prominent beak, wears a crown – massive, strong – and more than anything else – ever devoted to Sriman Narayanan, carrying Him on his shoulders all the time. His devotion and being close to Emperuman all the time – Garuda, is admired as ‘Periya Thiruvadi’.

At Mylapore, Sri Peyalwar too accompanied the Perumal.  Here are some photos taken this morning.
