Monkeys – we see them very rarely in Triplicane – they used roam so
much in Thirumala, not any longer, though found on the hills as one climbs by
foot. At Sholinghur they are aplenty ! here is a photo
of a Monkey carrying its kid [the small one too appears to be big !]
Not many may like Monkeys !!
- some do keep them as pets (no
reference to vagabonds here but the rich !] Monkeys depict a rich mix of playfulness, curiosity,
intelligence, and social bonding—and they teach us about the roots of human
behavior, the value of community, and how to stay adaptable and creative in the
face of problems. Their tool use,
memory, and social learning give clues about the evolution of human
intelligence and problem solving. Monkeys
show empathy, reconciliation after conflict, and complex communication,
reminding us that emotions and relationships are deeply rooted in our biology. Their
ability to thrive in varied environments underscores the survival value of
flexibility, curiosity, and learning from others.
Sri Vaishnava
devotional concept , about different ways through which a devotee approaches Perumal
is presented through nyayas – methods or theories –the two most often cited are
markata and
marjara. The concepts of Markaṭa Nyāya (Monkey Principle) and Mārjāra
Nyāya
(Cat Principle) are among the most beautiful analogies in the Sri Vaishnava
tradition to explain the relationship between human effort (prayatna) and
divine grace (śaraṇāgati
/
prapatti).
Markada
nyayam means the monkey-infant
principle, how a soul receives divine grace. In this
view, salvation requires active effort from the devotee—just like a baby monkey
must tightly cling to its mother's belly for safety while she moves. The seeker
must hold on to God through personal discipline, prayer, and action. If the baby monkey loses its grip and lets
go, it falls. Grace is attained by those who actively seek and strive for it.
The one
contradicting this is - Marjara Nyaya (The Cat Principle): represents total,
passive surrender. Like a mother cat that picks up her passive kitten by the
scruff of the neck, God takes complete and sole responsibility for the
devotee's safety without any active effort from the seeker. ‘marjara-nyaya refers to the behaviour of
kittens, who are likely to wander. The mother cat picks them up by the scruff
of the neck and carries them wherever she wants them to be. The kitten is
passive; she makes no effort but arrives safely by surrendering to the mother’s
protective grasp.’ It is up to the devotee, then, to choose: to keep making an
effort to cling for succour to his deity, or to leave everything to the deity,
trusting him and surrendering to him completely. No recommendation is made, no
preference indicated.
The
Thennacharya sampradhaya is often
associated with Mārjāra Nyāya.
This concept emphasizes : God's
grace is unconditional; the soul cannot
save itself. The Lord Himself becomes
both: the means
(upāya), and the goal (upeya). The
devotee merely performs sincere surrender (prapatti).
Our Great
Acaryar Swami Pillai Lokacharya drew
extensively on Nammāḻvār while developing the theology
of śaraṇāgati in works such as the Śrīvacana Bhūṣaṇam. He
emphasized that: the soul is utterly incapable (ākiñcanya), the Lord is the sole means (upāya), the Lord's grace alone saves.
One of
the verses of Swami Nammalvar’s Thiruvaimozhi most often quoted in discussions of surrender
is:
"புகல் ஒன்று இல்லா அடியேன் உன் அடிக்கீழ் அமர்ந்து புகுந்தேனே."
"I,
Your servant, who has no other refuge, have come and taken shelter beneath Your
feet."

A Srivaishnavaite way of life is simple –
Surrender unto the Lotus Feet of Sriman Narayana, do kainkaryam that pleases
Emperuman and his bakths.
To many of us he concept of "Bhakti - surrender to God" represents a profound merging of spiritual devotion with material detachment, where a devotee offers their highest material assets (gold/wealth) to the Divine as an act of absolute surrender (sharanagati) - not exactly !!!
In Sri Vaishnavism, Saranagati (or Prapatti) is the core principle of complete, unconditional surrender to Lord Narayana (Vishnu) and His consort Lakshmi, recognizing them as the sole refuge for attaining liberation (Moksha). It involves a deep commitment to God's will, abandoning ego, and relying solely on divine grace, often through specific practices like Anukulyasya Sankalpa (accepting the favorable) and Atma-nikshepa (self-offering), leading to spiritual freedom.
The Bhagavad-gita (18.66) concludes by calling upon us to surrender to Krishna. To some of us, the word “surrender” may conjure images of a defeated military general reluctantly and resentfully giving up a lost fight. The Gita’s teaching of the concept of surrender is totally different: it connotes a voluntary offering of our heart’s love to Krishna expressed by harmonizing our human will with his divine will.
How do we surrender
to Krishna as we fight our many battles in the course of daily life? Do we quit
those battles or do we keep fighting? The essence of surrender is to do
Krishna’s will. That may sometimes require persevering in a battle and
sometimes require putting aside a battle. What we do specifically is not as
important as the consciousness in which we do it. When we surrender to Krishna,
we hand our will to him and ask him to use us as he sees fit. The resulting
divine connection helps us see the situation from a higher perspective. With
that raised consciousness, we discover in life's battles hidden opportunities
to experience Krishna’s love for us and to express our love for him. Tapping
those opportunities is the heart of surrender.
To put it simply - “Accepting everything favourable to devotion to Krishna, rejecting everything unfavourable to devotion to Krishna, being confident that Krishna will grant His protection”

On the outskirts of Madurai, roughly eight kilometers from the city lies one of the most prominent Saivaite religious shrines - Thiruparankundram Murugan. It is among the six abodes of Lord Murugan, called Arupadaiveedu as a whole. The temple was built by the Pandyas during the eighth century by a single mountain carving out the rocks, which add to its overall magnetism. It is here that Shanmugar married Deivayanai, the princess of heaven and the divine daughter of Lord Indra after slaying the demon king Surapadman. So, this temple is considered one of the most promising places for marriages.
Thiruparankundram and its landmark hill contains some of the earliest cave temples of Shaivism tradition in this region. The hill is sacred - Kandhamalai (lit. "hill of Kandha (Murugan, Kartikeya) – the god of war"). The temple complex is Thirupparamkunram Murugan temple, one of the Six Abodes of Murugan (Aru padai veedu).
The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Friday reserved orders on a batch of petitions filed over the location chosen by the Subramaniya Swamy temple administration for lighting Karthigai Deepam at Thiruparankundram hill on December 3. The petitioners challenged the decision of temple administration to light the Karthigai Deepam at the 'usual' location - Deepa Mandapam near the Uchipillaiyar temple on the hill. They alleged that the said mandapam is used to light 'Moksha Deepam' and the same spot cannot be used for Karthigai Deepam. They claimed that the ritual traditionally took place on an ancient stone pillar (Deepa Thoon) located more than 15 metres away from the Sikandar Badusha Dargah on the hilltop, saying it would make the deepam more visible.
HR&CE while arguing against, admitted that the stone pillar was covered by the temple authorities since it was not being used. Addl AG for the State said rituals for lighting the deepam have begun and the public have been informed that the deepam would be lit in Uchipillaiyar temple mandapam . No changes can be proposed at this stage, he added.
Recently,
Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court delivered its third-judge ruling on the
Thiruparankundram Hillock dispute, settling the split verdict delivered in June
this year. Justice GR Vijayakumar, the third judge nominated to decide the
matter, largely concurred with the views of Justice S Srimathy, affirming that
the name of the hillock shall remain Thiruparankundram
Hill and not Sikkandar Malai.
The judgment resolved three contentious issues - the name of the hillock, the practice of animal sacrifice at the Sikkandar Badusha Dargah, and the right of Muslims to offer prayers at the Nellithoppu area.
Justice Vijayakumar noted that revenue and archaeological records, including a 1908 and a 1923 Gazette notification under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act, identify the area as Thiruparankundram Rock. The notifications declare 172.2 acres of the hill as protected monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Citing these records and the 1920 civil court decree, the judge held that referring to the hill as Sikkandar Malai was "mischievous" and amounted to an attempt to alter its historical name. The judge also observed that Arulmigu Subramaniaswamy Temple at the foothills is the owner of the entire Thiruparankundram Hill except for two portions - the Sikkandar Badhusha Avuliya Dargah at the southern peak and the Nellithoppu area midway - which earlier civil court decrees had recognised as belonging to the Mohammedans. The Dargah and Nellithoppu areas together form only a small part of the 172-acre hill, with Nellithoppu itself measuring about 33 cents.
The
Judgement further cleared that no animal sacrifice can be permitted on the hillock,
citing that there was no documentary proof showing animal sacrifice as a
long-standing or essential religious practice at the Dargah. The court held
that even if the dargah administration claims animal sacrifice as a religious
custom, it must establish this before a competent civil court. Until such a
decision is made, no animal sacrifice, cooking, or serving of non-vegetarian
food would be allowed anywhere on the hill. The Court permitted Muslims to offer prayers
in the Nellithoppu area during Ramzan and Bakrid alone, subject to strict
conditions. The steps, which also lead
to the Kasi Vishwanathar Temple atop the hill, must not be obstructed or
defiled.

Govardhana (गोवर्धन) is a 8km long hill located near the town of Vrindavan, in the
Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh – it is the sacred hills of Braj. Lord Krishna was born in Mathura, brought up in Gokulam,
played in Vrindavan and surroundings and thus many of His Leelas were in and
around these areas ~ ‘lifting of the Govardhana Giri’ is a very important
event. The greatness of the hills of Govardhan is appreciated by
Periyazhwar in 10 hymns.
Govardhan giri (hill) is among the holiest of holy places
for the the worshippers of Lord Krishna. Its history and legends are steeped in
ancient scriptures that have ties to the ancient Sanskrit language. There is mention in the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, and by
putting Govardhan Hill as none different from Lord Krishna in the Bhagwat
Purana. Bhagwan Krishna instructed the inhabitants of Braj except to worship Lord
Krishna, they needed to worship Govardhan Hill instead, along with his many
other impersonal forms, in replace of Indra because the Govardhan Hill and
Krishna were non-different in the eyes of Lord Krishna .
Deep within the lush
forests of Vrindavan lies the sacred Govardhana Mountain peak. Legend has it
that Govardhana manifested from the heart of Krishna in Goloka to fulfil the
divine desire of Śrī Radha for an exquisitely beautiful setting for their
pastimes. Famous as the supreme servant of Krishna, Govardhana provides a
fairy-tale-like playground for the Lord and His companions. Here, cows, gopas,
and gopis find limitless joy. Once, to shield the Vrajavasis from the anger of
Lord Indira, Seven-year-old Krishna lifted Govardhana like an umbrella and held
it up in the air for seven days.
Since then, devotees have
walked around this sacred mountain as an act of worship. The Govardhan Hill is
built of sandstone and wide spread in perimeter of 38 Kilometers with height of
80 feet. Govardhan Hill located in Aanyor, Mathura
Govardhan Parikrama is a
21-kilometer circumambulation (pradakshinam) around the sacred Govardhan Hill
in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, performed as a spiritual journey of devotion to Lord
Krishna. Devotees walk barefoot, chanting "Radhe Radhe" or "Jai
Shri Giriraj Maharaj," to commemorate how Lord Krishna lifted the hill
with his finger to protect devotees from a torrential downpour. The parikrama would o remove sins and bring peace, and can
take 5-7 hours on foot.
Govardhan Parikrama is one of the most cherished spiritual
practices in the Vaishnava tradition. Every year, lakhs of devotees walk
barefoot around the sacred Govardhan Hill in the Braj region of
Vrindavan-Mathura (Uttar Pradesh). The parikrama, or circumambulation, covers a
distance of about 21 kilometres and is performed with chants of Radha and
Krishna, remembering the pastimes of the Lord and a deep sense of surrender. With
every step, devotees express their gratitude to Krishna for his protection,
wishing for his guidance and strength in their own lives. This ritual isn’t
just about faith; it’s also about looking for direction. For centuries, saints
and seekers have walked this sacred path, leaving behind stories of devotion
that inspire people even today.
Pradakshinam – circumambulation (from Latin circum around and
ambulātus to walk) is considered holy in Hindu tradition. Doing pradakshinams in Temples is a
devotional practice. AT holy Govardhana,
the Hill is considered Emperuman and devotees do parikrama (Pradakshinam) – a full
21km walk – not thinking of the heat or rain or any other hindrance.
Among the various types
there is Milk parikrama (carrying a milk pot on the head and milk is poured all along the
way) and Dandavat Parikrama - devotees prostrate at
each step. They completely fall down,
get up and again fall at the next step.
Here is a devout couple
offering combined Dandavat Parikrama – video taken with their permission. My pranams to them and to all devotees of
Bhagwan Sree Krishna : https://youtu.be/HU-ddFQsQPU
We are proud to be devotees ! - we go to Temples sort of regularly and religiously. We worship Lord on special occasions, we do pooja at home and offer worship at so many religious places. We are happy travelling far and wide to various temples – this particular step (kainkaryam) done by a Sivanadiyar group is really worth admiring and eulogizing ‘Aran Pani Arakkattalai’ [அரன் பணி அறக்கட்டளை] whose adorable motto reads : சிவலிங்க திருமேனிகள் வெட்டவெளியில் இல்லா நிலையை உருவாக்குவோம்
India lives in villages and our Sanathana dharma
still thrives in villages. Approx 9 kilometers away from the famous
Kachi, after the river Palar lies the village of Mamandur, for easy
identification called as “Dusi Mamandur”. In this serene
village, is the small but beautiful temple of Lord Lakshmi
Narayanar. The Moolavar is Sri Arulmigu Lakshmi
Narayanar – Perumal in sitting posture having Sri Lakshmi on his lap.
Uthsavar is Shri Lakshmi Narayanar and Thayar is Sundaravalli Thayar.
Besides the big sprawling lake, there are set of cave temples excavated on the eastern face of a hill running north-south in the west of the village. Mamandur is situated in proximity to Kanchi, the capital of the Pallavas. When Mahendravarman I (600-630 CE) started his quest of constructing a temple without using materials other than stone, Mamandur would have been a natural choice being in vicinity of his capital. However, the king did not go with the obvious choice !! nearer our village, there are four rock-cut shrines, numbered 1 to 4 by ASI (Archaeological Survey of India).
This post on the newly built (rather new building for ancient) Shiva linga temple nearer our village.
A staunch devotee by name Kanchi Sivabalan had posted on his
Insta page about the partially hidden Lingam.
His page description reads :

Picking up from this, another religious organization named ‘Aran Pani Arakkattalai’ [அரன் பணி அறக்கட்டளை] – has done a wonderful thiruppani in reconstituting and building up a temple for the Shiv Linga now named Arulmigu Masila Maneeswarar.
