The month of Purattasi was more about Lord Srinivasa, devotees visiting temples, sanikkizhamai purappadu of Sri Azhagiya Singar at Thiruvallikkeni and .. .. the golu festival of Navarathiri. 

Sure you visited many homes, saw tastefully decorated, concept arranged bommai golus and Temples with Thayar/Amman purappadu and decorations – more of the people richly adorning themselves with matching dress, ornaments and more !!

.. ..  in between – in Temples, after worshipping God – what do you observe ?

In the broad  corridors of the Red Building of Hindu High School, Triplicane, (perhaps in the school you studied too)  the walk of the attender would attract the attention of students inside the class room – before it even sounds, some would ready to fly away….  It was the sweet sound of school bell – #not physically a  bell# – but that of a metal hammered with a wooden object, creating enough sound audible to the locality.  Such bells are missing now in schools perhaps !   

One may not readily remember – ‘John Richard Dedicoat’ who invented pencil-sharpening machine, bicycle bell,  and some  other bicycle related items. Apprenticed to James Watt, he went on to become a bicycle manufacturer and made and sold the "Pegasus" bicycle. But Alexander Graham Bell !  a Scottish-born inventor, scientist and engineer who patented the first practical telephone, is well known right from school days. He also co-founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885. Bell's father, grandfather, and brother had all been associated with work on elocution and speech, and both his mother and wife were deaf; profoundly influencing Bell's life's work. 

Temple  bells are part of rituals ~and are   sacred.  At the holy Thirumala, as is in all Temples, the bells toll every day during temple rituals.  Devotees would observe the two huge bells [Gaanda mani] within the precincts of the temple, upon coming out of the sanctum sanctorum of Thiruvengadam Udaiyan.

It is believed that the twin bells in the Temple were installed in 1417 by a king of Vijayanagar empire.   The bells reverberate during the pre-dawn rituals like Thomala Seva, Archana, Koluvu and more importantly during the time when the priests offer ‘Thiruamudhu’ [neivethyam – offering of food].  As the history of the temple goes, the ornate Mukha Mandapam also called as ‘Mani Mandapam’ where the two-bells are installed to a huge beam was built in the year 1417 by Vijayanagar king Amathya Mallana. The kings were said to have built a chain of Mani Mandapams between the Tirumala temple and the Chandragiri fort with such an engineering symmetry that they served as ‘relay stations’ to carry the sound-waves from the bells from one place to another.  It is believed that the Vijayanagara kings, while on their sojourn in the Chandragiri fort, located around 12 km from Tirupati down the hill, used to take their food only after the bells were tolled.

Nearer home is the  place that predates British rule by several centuries; it was occupied by the Portuguese in 1523, which  lasted until 1749, later falling  into the hands of the British East India Company.   It is “Mylapore” [Thiru Mayilai],  a cultural hub; one of the oldest residential parts of the city, also known as VEdapuri and Mayurapuri ~    Thirumayilai has the avathara sthalam of Sri Peyalwar at Arundale Street – nearer is Sri Madhava Perumal thirukovil. 

One would be surprised to find so many temples in small lanes and bylanes of Thirumayilapuri.  As one crosses, the Hamilton Bridge, is the famous  ‘Sri Mylai Madhava Perumal Thirukovil’   and behind this is ‘ Mundagakanni Amman temple’.  At Madhava Perumal temple, the Presiding deity is in a sitting posture hailed as Sri Madhavar and His consort is Amirthavalli.  The Uthsavar idol is extremely beautiful.

இன்று காலை திருவல்லிக்கேணி சாத்தானி தெரு எனப்படும் துளசிங்கபெருமாள் தெருவும் பெசன்ட் ரோடும் சேரும் இடத்தில சில வைணவர்கள் காத்து இருந்தனர்.  சிலர் இது என்ன விசித்திரம் என்று பார்த்து அங்கலாய்த்தனர் !  .. .. சிலர் இன்று என்ன விசேஷம், இங்கு ஏன் பெருமாள் வருகிறார் என வினவினர் !! விசித்திரமான காரியங்களையும் காரணங்களையுமெல்லாம் விபூதியாகவுடைனாயிருக்கிறபடியை அநுஸந்தித்து இவையென்ன   மாயா! என்று ஸ்வாமி நம்மாழ்வார் தமது திருவாய்மொழியில் அருளிச் செய்கிறார்.   

Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal Devasthanam better known as ‘Kesava Perumal Kovil’ is near Mylai Kapaleeswarar Temple and the Chithirai kulam belongs to this Temple.  This is Chandra pushkarini (sarva theertham) popularly known as Chithirai kulam.  The presiding deity here is Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal and thayar is Mayuravalli – the place itself was historically known as ‘Mayurapuri’. The temple is quite ancient and dates back to centuries.  The temple is quite ancient and dates back to centuries. During Ekkattu Thangal Purappadu, Sri Parthasarathi Perumal visits this Temple and has mandagapadi here.  

 Among the 12 Azhwaars of Srivaishanva Tradition, Poigai Azhwar, Boothath Azhwar and Peyazhwar – were the ones to have descended on this Earth earlier.  They were contemporaries and are praised as “Muthal Azhwars (the first among the Azhwars).   Sri Peyalwar was born in a tank in Mylapore (thence known as Mylai Thiruvallikkeni).  His birthplace is in the present day Arundel Street in Mylapore.

 நீயாய் நீ நின்றவாறு  இவையென்ன நியாயங்களே !! 

எம்பெருமான்  ஆச்சரியமான செய்கைகளையுடையவன் - வாமநாவதாரஞ் செய்தவனே!;  மதுகைடபர்களைத் தொலைத்தவனே!  உன்படிகளை நீயே அருளிச் செய்யவேணும்; தீ, நீர், நிலன், காற்று,  விசும்பு ஆகிய பஞ்ச பூதங்களுமாய்; மாதா பிதாக்களாய்;  தம் வயிற்றில் பிறந்த பிள்ளைகளாய் -   அல்லாதவையுமாய்; சொல்லிச் சொல்லாத எல்லாமுமாய் ; அவதாரணமான தன்மை வாய்ந்த நீயாய் - இவ்வாறு எல்லாமுமாய் நீயே  நிற்கிற இந்தச் தன்மைகள்  என்னவகைகளோ! இவை என்ன நியாயங்களே! இவைதாம் இன்னபடியென்று எனக்குத் தெரிகிறதில்லையே; தெரிகிறதில்லையே; தெரியவருளிச் செய்யவேணும் என சுவாமி நம்மாழ்வார் இயம்புகிறார்.   

For many years, Sri Aadhi Kesava Perumal from Thirumayilai has been visiting Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam and has ‘vana bojana uthsavam’ performed here. Today morning, 29.5.2022  – Adhi Kesavar in pallakku  visited Thiruvallikkeni, had Thirumanjanam at Sri Vanamamalai Mutt at East Tank Sq St., Triplicane.  Sri NC Sridhar has been taking care of all the arrangements.  Here are some photos taken at the time of His entry into Thiruvallikkeni.

இன்று  28.3.2022  ஸ்ரீஅழகியசிங்கர் பங்குனி  ப்ரஹ்மோத்சவத்திலே 9ம் நாள்.  ஸ்ரீபார்த்தசாரதி எம்பெருமானுக்கு 9ம் உத்சவம் இரவு கண்ணாடி பல்லக்கு; தெள்ளியசிங்கனுக்கு அற்புதமான ஆனந்த விமானம்.  ஸ்ரீஅழகியசிங்கர் பேயாழ்வார் கோவில் தெரு வழியாக எழுந்து அருளி, திருமொழி செவி மடுத்து, விமானத்தில் எழுந்து அருளி, குளக்கரை, பெரிய மாடவீதி புறப்பாடு கண்டு அருளினார்.  

We go to Temples, worship Emperuman, forget our worries and are blissfully happy…  .. in the midst of festivity in any Temple, there is something unmistakably heard .. .. .. that makes you happy !  - the sound of music – not only that of Temple bells – more of Mangala Isai – Nadaswaram & Thavil. 

திருக்கோவிலில் எழுந்தருளி இருக்கும் எம்பெருமானுக்காக நாதஸ்வர வித்துவான்கள், தவில் வசிப்பவர்கள் - பக்தி  பரவசத்துடன், தங்களை அர்ப்பணித்து சேவை புரிகின்றனர்.  நித்தியகால பூஜையில் வாசிக்கப்படும் மங்கல இசை மக்களுக்காக அல்ல !  இறைவனுக்காக !!  மங்கலம் என்ற சொல் ஆக்கம், பொலிவு, நற்செயல், திருமணம், அறம், வாழ்த்து, சுபம் போன்ற பொருள்களில் கையாளப்படுகிறது.   மேளக் குழுவின் முதன்மைக் கருவியாக நாகசுரம் விளங்குகிறது. இது ஒரு குழல் கருவியாகும். இதனைப் பெரு வங்கியம் என்றும், நாகசுரம் என்றும், நாயனம் என்றும் அழைப்பர்.  ப்ரஹ்மோத்சவம் போன்ற திருவிழா காலங்களில் சிறப்பு வாத்திய இசை ஏற்பாடு பண்ணுகிறார்கள். ஒன்பது நாளுமே உத்சவத்தில், பத்தி உலாத்தல் மற்றும் பெரிய மாடவீதி புறப்பாடு சமயங்களில் சிறப்பான இசையை கேட்கலாம்.  இன்று திருமயிலை ராஜேஷ் குழுவினர் அற்புதமாக இசைத்தனர்.

For sure, you have heard many famous singers singing this Thiyagaraja keerthana ‘Bantu reethi koluv’ - In this beautiful keerthana, Sri Thyagaraja  pleads with Lord Rama to give him the post of a sentinel  of Sree Rama. The symbolic meaning is that he wants to be in His presence always (just as Sri Kulasekara Azhwar pleaded Lord Venkateswara to be in holy Thirumala and infront of Lord Thiruvengadamudaiyan)

O Lord Rama, as an orderly sentry,  Into your service, may I gain entry, O Lord rAma! Bestow on me (Thigayya) the privilege (“kolu”) of being in Your service as a servitor (“Bantu rIti”). In the Anupallavi, Sri Thyagaraja Swamy says that, the guard’s post should be such that he is empowered to destroy all the demons which are Arishadvargas (Arishad Vargas are the six passions of the mind: Kama - lust, craze, desire; Krodha - anger, hatred; Lobha - greed, miserliness, narrow minded; Moha - delusory emotional attachment; Mada or Ahankara - pride, stubborn mindedness; and Matsarya - envy, jealousy, show or vanity, and pride) and since the guard is empowered to do so, he needs such a guard's post.

பின் குறிப்பு :  பாட்டறியேன் - ராகம் அறியேன் ! கர்நாடக சங்கீதம் நான் அறியேன் (இதில் ஒன்றும் பெருமை இல்லை என்பது மட்டும் அறிவேன்).. .. ..     ஏழு ஸ்வரங்களையும் கொண்டுள்ள ராகங்கள் சம்பூர்ண ராகங்கள்  என் போன்ற ஞான சூனியங்களுக்கு - இராகங்களின் பெயர்களே புரிபடாது -  இணையத்தில் தேடினால் : அம்ருதவாகினி,  அம்ருதவர்ஷினி, அசாவேரி, அடாணா, ஆபேரி, ஆபோகி  தன்யாசி, தர்பார்,  தேவகாந்தாரி, என - .. வாசிப்பை கேட்டு அது எந்த ராகம் என்பது .. .. .. !!!   - எனினும் சங்கீதம் கேட்க கேட்க ஆனந்தத்தை தருகிறது.  அதுவும் திருக்கோவில்களில் வாசிக்கப்படும் நாதஸ்வரம் மனதை மயக்குகிறது.

Thai Velli - Thirumylai Sri Amruthavalli Thayar

இன்று  28.01.2022 -  தை  வெள்ளிக்கிழமை - கேட்டை நக்ஷத்திரம், ஏகாதசி ! 

தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை அளிக்கும் சிறப்பு வாய்ந்தது  தை மாதம்.   தமிழ் முறையில் கணிக்கப்பட்ட நாட்காட்டியின்படி ஆண்டின் பத்தாவது மாதம் தை ஆகும். இது தைசிய என்றும் பௌஷ என்றும் வடமொழியில் குறிப்பிடப்படுகிறது. சூரியன் மகர இராசியுட் புகுந்து அதைவிட்டு வெளியேறும் வரையிலான 29 நாள், 27 நாடி, 16 விநாடி கொண்ட கால அளவே இம் மாதமாகும். வசதிக்காக இந்த மாதம் 29 அல்லது 30 நாட்களை உடையதாகக் கொள்ளப்படும். தை மாதப் பிறப்புத் தமிழர்களால் தைப்பொங்கல் பண்டிகையாகக் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.  அறுவடையில் கிடைத்த புது நெல்லுக் கொண்டு சூரியனுக்குப் பொங்கலிட்டுப் படைக்கும் நாளாதலால் உழவர் திருநாள் என்றும் இந்தநாள் குறிப்பிடப்படுகின்றது.

தை மாதத்தின் வெள்ளிக்கிழமை அம்பாளுக்கு/ தாயாருக்கு  விசேஷமாகும். இந்த தை வெள்ளியில் அபிராமி அந்தாதி, சௌந்தர்ய லஹரி உள்ளிட்ட அம்மன் குறித்த பாடல்களைப் பாடி வழிபாடு மேற்கொள்ளப்படுகிறது. பொதுவாக தை வெள்ளிக்கிழமைகளில் லட்சுமியை வழிபாடு செய்தால் கோடீஸ்வர யோகம் தேடி வரும் என்று சொல்வார்கள்.  இந்த நாளில்,  அம்பாள் குடிகொண்டிருக்கும் ஆலயங்களில், சிறப்பு வழிபாடுகள், விசேஷ பூஜைகள் நடைபெறும்.  செல்வத்தை அள்ளித் தரும் சுக்ரனுக்குரிய வெள்ளிக்கிழமை நாளில், உத்தராயண காலமாகிய தைமாதத்தில் தவறாமல் விரதம் கடைப்பிடிக்க வேண்டும் என்று முன்னோர்கள் வகுத்து வைத்துள்ளனர்.

தையொரு திங்களும் தரை விளக்கி  என்பது கோதை பிராட்டி  வாய்மொழி !  மார்கழி முழுதும் திருப்பாவை  நோன்பு இருந்தும்,  கண்ணன் அவளை வந்து சேரவில்லையே என ஆதங்கப்பட்டு ஆண்டாள், தான் ஒருவேளை காமனைத் தொழுதால்  வந்து சேருவாரோன்னு மன்மதனை  தொழ முடிவெடுத்துப் பாடல் பாடுகிறாள்.  இப்பாசுரத்திலே 'அனங்க தேவா' என விளிக்கிறாள்.  அனங்க தேவா என்றால் உடல் அற்றவன் என்று பொருளாம்..ஒருமுறை சிவனால் எரிக்கப்பட்ட காமன் உடம்பு அற்றுப் போனதாக புராணம் !  அவன் வரவேண்டிய இடங்களையும் தெருக்களையும் பரிஷ்கரித்து அழகிய சிறு மணல்களால் அலங்கரித்து   மேடையிட்டு அவனையும் அவன் தம்பியையும் வணங்குவதாகக் கூறும் பாசுரம், இது.:

தையொரு திங்களும் தரைவிளக்கித் தண்மண்டலமிட்டு மாசிமுன்னாள்

ஐயநுண் மணற்கொண்டு தெருவணிந்து அழகினுக் கலங்கரித்தனங்கதேவா

உய்யவுமாங்கொலோவென்று சொல்லி உன்னையும் உம்பியையும் தொழுதேன்

வெய்யதோர் தழலுமிழ் சக்கரக்கை வேங்கடவற்கென்னை விதிக்கிற்றியே.   

கரும்புவில் கையில் கொண்ட காமதேவனே, தை மாதம் முழுதும் நீ வருகின்ற இடத்தை அலங்காரம் செய்து, குளிச்சியான அழகுடைய மண்டலம் போன்றதான கோலத்தினை இட்டும்,மாசி மாதத்தில் முதல் நாளில் அழகியதான சிறு மணல் துகள்களினால் நீ வரும் வீதியை அழகுடையதாக அலங்கரித்தும், நான் உஜ்ஜீவனம் பெற , அனங்கதேவனே உன்னையும் உன்னுடைய தம்பியான சாமனையும் வணங்கினேன், வெம்மையான நெருப்பினை பொழியும் திருச்சக்கரத்தினை தனது திருக்கரத்தினில் ஏந்தியவனும் திருவேங்கட மலையில் உறைபவனுமான எம்பெருமானுக்கு என்னை அந்தரங்கமாக தொண்டு செய்யும்படியாக நீ செய்யவேண்டும் என்று  கோதை பிராட்டி  அருளிச் செய்கிறார்.  அவருக்கு எம்பெருமானிடத்திலே சேர்த்தல் மட்டுமே முழு நினைப்பு.
