Thirumylai Sri Madhava Perumal Pavithrothsavam 2026

Pre-script:  though a long winding post starting with battlefield of 1746 – No war post this !!

A war nearer home ! centuries ago – ramification of ‘War of Austrian Succession’  - stop Madras to Austria – crossing seas and multiple continents – approx 7000 km away .. and a war fought between British East India Company and French East India Company !!

According to historians, French reinforcements from Pondicherry did not sail into Madras harbour. Instead they landed on the open coast near present-day Thiruvanmiyur/Besant Nagar, where the surf permitted boats to land troops. They numbered approximately: 300 French, 700 Indian sepoys commanded by Louis Paradis. From the beach the troops marched north-west.  There was no Marina Beach as we know it.  Instead there were – sand dunes, scrub vegetarion, marshes, tidal channels and a wider river (Adyaru).

Their rivals the British with Nawab's Army blocked the crossing. The Nawab's son Mahfuz Khan understood the French had to cross the river. He therefore deployed nearly 10,000 cavalry and infantry on the north bank of the Adyar, stretching from San Thome toward what is now Quibble Island, with artillery covering likely crossing points.

So a battle of Adyar occurring somewhere nearer Mylapore !!   The French did not build a bridge. They crossed the shallow estuary at low tide, wading through water while maintaining disciplined formations. Contemporary re-enactments place the crossing in the coastal strip between today's Adyar Estuary and Elliot's Beach.  History records that in  September 1746 the French fleet under La Bourdonnais captured Fort St. George from the British.

The Nawab of Arcot, Anwar-ud-din Khan, objected because neither European company technically owned Madras outright; they held it under the Nawab's authority. He ordered the French to hand over Madras. The French refused. That refusal led directly to the Battle of Adyar.  French commander Louis Paradis marched from  mylapore area  toward Madras. Instead of remaining on the defensive, he crossed the Adyar River and attacked. The disciplined French infantry advanced in compact formations supported by well-drilled artillery. The Nawab's forces, although vastly superior in numbers, fought largely in traditional cavalry formations that proved ineffective against concentrated musket volleys and field artillery. Within a short time, the Nawab's army broke and retreated. French casualties were remarkably light, while the Nawab suffered much heavier losses.

Many historians consider the Battle of Adyar one of the most significant military engagements in early colonial India.  It demonstrated European military superiority. The battle proved that disciplined infantry using coordinated musket fire and artillery could defeat armies many times their size. The French victory relied not only on Europeans but also on Indian soldiers trained in European tactics. The British quickly learned the same lesson and later developed their own large sepoy armies.

Strangely the loss in war paved the way for British expansion as they invested on Indian sepoys to defeat their own Nation and keep parts of India unified under their control.  Much of the original battlefield has since been urbanised, and the river's course has changed somewhat over nearly three centuries.

Today’s post is on this Thirumylai and an important uthsavam at this temple in the centre of Mylapore.

In the capital of Tamil Nadu is the pristine Temple of Sri Parthasarathi Swami at Thiruvallikkeni.   Though not the earliest British settlement in the Indian Peninsula, Madras possessed a peculiar interest as constituting, with the exception of the insignificant site at Armagon, the first territorial acquisition by the English in Hindustan.    It is a place that predates British rule by several centuries; it was occupied by the Portuguese in 1523, which  lasted until 1749, later falling  into the hands of the British East India Company.   It is “Mylapore” [Thiru Mayilai],  a cultural hub; one of the oldest residential parts of the city, also known as VEdapuri and Mayurapuri ~    Thirumayilai has the avathara sthalam of Sri Peyalwar at Arundale Street – nearer is Sri Madhava Perumal thirukovil.  Mylai is famous for Sri Kapaleeswarar temple which is connected with the S'aivite Nayanmars.

Now is the time for Thirupavithrothsavam for Sri Madhava Perumal – this morning there was yaga salai and goshti of Thirupallandu, Thiruppavai and 5th and 6th decads of Swami Nammalwar’s Thiruvaimozhi. Here are some photos of most beautiful Sri Madhava Perumal at Thirumylai taken during His pavithrothsavam.

WW II ~ ARP - Sri Parthasarathi Perumal Garuda Sevai purappadu

Brahmothsavam  is a grand festivity – each day it is different Vahanam, and Perumal has classy alankarams … on Garuda vahanam day, thousands gather early in the morning to catch glimpse of the Lord as he comes out of the gate (Gopura vasal darsanam).

In the grand Brahmothsavam, each Vahanam, every purappadu has its  own charm, yet, if one were to ask the most majestic and most crowd-pulling ones,  it would be Thiruther and Garuda vahanam. !!  .. .. ..    On Garuda Sevai day, people from far and away come to the temple, offer vasthram (new clothes), place before Lord coconut, fruits & other offerings and have darshan of Lord in Garuda vahanam.

Reading the annals of History, - year 1943 marked a decisive turning point in the Second World War. Allied victories in North Africa, the Soviet triumph at Stalingrad, and the invasion of mainland Italy shifted the balance of power dramatically. Italy surrendered to the Allies, Mussolini was overthrown, and the momentum of the war began favouring the Allied forces both in Europe and the Pacific. On the Eastern Front, the Battle of Kursk delivered a catastrophic blow to German hopes of regaining the initiative.

Beyond the battlefield, 1943 was a year of intense civilian mobilisation, scientific advancement, and cultural resilience. The Holocaust reached new depths of horror, but was met with courageous resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto. Allied conferences shaped the future world order, while home fronts across Britain, the United States, and the Commonwealth continued to adapt to rationing, bombing, and social change. In Britain, women took on a growing range of industrial roles, while music, cinema, and broadcasting sustained public morale.

On April 21, 1943, the Jewish resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto was actively fighting back against Nazi troops. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which began on April 19, marked the first major urban rebellion against Nazi Germany.  On this day, the  bombing of Aberdeen killed 98 civilians and 27 servicemen. The attack was the worst of 34 separate German air raids on the Scottish city. The British submarine Splendid was shelled and damaged off Corsica, with the loss of 18 of her 48 crew, by the German destroyer Hermes.  Captain Frederick M. Trapnell became the first U.S. Navy aviator to fly a jet airplane, when he took up the Bell P-59 from the Muroc Army Air Field (now Edwards Air Force Base) in California.

Chennapatnam, aka namma Madras is now 387 years old … The city has witnessed everything from invasions, bombings, food scarcity, blackouts to evacuations but, time and again, but not much of War and World War.  In 1914, there was the infamous SMS Emden bombing and in 1943 a Japanese Bombing. Before that there were a few invasions that took place. So, people were not really prepared for a full fledged war.   When the World War II  began in 1939, it didn’t affect the city until the Japanese entered. “When the war began there was scarcity and everything was rationed!”

In 1943 there was a cyclone and the city was flooding. The Japanese dropped the bomb and no one knew that the city was bombed for about a week! Newspapers couldn’t report it because of the inflicted power cut.”  Two-thirds of the city was empty as people fled. “The real estate prices crashed and a lot of people were making money by buying these houses.,” While humans fled, sadly animals in the Madras zoo were shot dead, fearing bombings and what would happen with wild animals on the run. Buildings were to be painted grey and newspapers were pasted on glass windows.  The collector and the Thasildar moved from the beach, in the pretext of other places being ‘safe’. “Technically no place was safe.

Though the war happened miles away, it touched several lives. “The awareness about Madras’ participation in the war is zero. People only remember the evacuation.  Here is an interesting clipping linking Second WW to Madras particularly Triplicane and more specifically our Temple.  This is about Air Raid Precaution [ARP] reported in Indian Express dated 22.4.1943.

During the Second World War (1939–1945), the British Government introduced an extensive civil defence system throughout India, particularly in important port cities such as: Madras, Bombay,  Calcutta, Vizag, Cochin, Kakinada and more !!  Madras was considered vulnerable because it was an important harbour, railway junction and military supply centre. After the Japanese entered the war in December 1941 and especially following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, fears of Japanese attacks on India's east coast became very real. People in Madras genuinely feared that the city would be next.  Many wealthy families temporarily left Madras for interior towns.

The government regularly organised city-wide mock exercises – ARPs - When the siren sounded:

         everyone had to stop what they were doing;

         lights had to be switched off;

         people took shelter;

         traffic halted;

         emergency medical teams assembled;

         fire-fighting units stood ready;

         police controlled movement.

Volunteers known as ARP Wardens ensured everyone obeyed the regulations. They wore steel helmets bearing the letters ARP.

This clipping says :  "...the Vigraha with its accompanying paraphernalia made straight for 'cover' by going into the Gangaikondan Mandapam..." On that day, the Garuda Sevai procession of Sri Parthasarathy Perumal was moving through Tholasinga Perumal Koil Street.  Exactly then, the air-raid warning siren was sounded. The  temple authorities immediately followed the ARP instructions. The Utsava Murti was taken into the nearby Gangaikondan Mandapam, which served as a place of safety. Only after the "All Clear" aesal took place and Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman completed the rest of the procession.

Those days the Air raid warning siren would be a rising and falling wailing sound, instructing people to take cover immediately and people took shelter.  The All Clear siren would be on a continuous steady note, meaning the danger had passed and normal activities could resume !!

One needs to have in mind that by that time - Japan had already captured: Singapore, Burma and  the Bay of Bengal was an active theatre of war. Madras remained under constant preparedness although it was never subjected to a major aerial bombardment.

This   newspaper report is valuable because it records three aspects simultaneously:

         wartime civil defence,

         the continued conduct of temple festivals,

         cooperation between religious institutions and the civil administration.

For those of us connected to Thiruvallikkeni, this is evocative clipping.  It shows that even during one of the most uncertain periods of the 20th century, the Garuda Sevai and other festivities  continued. The devotees paused only long enough to obey the air-raid warning, sheltered both the deity and the assembled devotees in Gangaikondan Mandapam, and then, after the "All Clear", resumed the procession as though affirming that tradition would endure despite the anxieties of war.

The famous  Gangaikondan Mandapam   where Emperuman takes rest   once served not only as a sacred resting place during processions but also as an improvised wartime shelter during World War II.  Here is a recent picture of Gangaikondan mandapam and a  video of Garuda vahana aesal this year on 3.5.2026  :  https://youtu.be/POppOu_Sqio

This year Chithirai  Brahmothsavam of Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman  at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam    3.5.2026  was  the third day –  Garuda Vahanam for Perumal.

Pillai Ulagariyar life history and his thiruvarasu !!

Acaryar Pillai Logachariyar at Thiruvarangam

Imp pre-script :  A very lengthy  post in two parts – first is about war, pillage, sufferings – the history and how or why such plunderers were glorified in Indian history ! Second about a great Acarya who saved the thirumeni of Thiruvarangan and ensured good continuance of our sampradhayam.

For sure, you had been to Madurai – and while travelling saw ‘Yanai Malai’ – a hillock in the shape of elephant, around 10 km from Madurai Mattuthavani bus stand.  The hill stretches over 3 kilo metres and is 90 metres (300 ft) high.

Picturesque Yaanai malai Madurai - afar view

Great Acaryas of Srivaishnavism did Pramanarakshakam, here is one who extolled Pramanas and also did Prameya rakshanam (protecting / nourshing the Thirumeni of Emperuman).

To the few who hail the British rule stating that they gave us education, Railways and the like  - please realise that they were mere looters just like Mughal invaders.  In 1930, a young American historian and philosopher, Will Durant, stepped onto the shores of India for the first time. He had embarked on a journey around the world to write what became the magnificent eleven-volume The Story of Civilization. But he was, in his own words, so ‘filled with astonishment and indignation’ at what he saw and read of Britain’s ‘conscious and deliberate bleeding of India’ that he set aside his research into the past to write a passionate denunciation of this ‘greatest crime in all history’. His short book, The Case for India, remains a classic, a profoundly empathetic work of compassion and outrage that tore apart the self-serving justifications of the British for their long and shameless record of rapacity in India. As Durant wrote: The British conquest of India was the invasion and destruction of a high civilization by a trading company [the British East India Company] utterly without scruple or principle, careless of art and greedy of gain, over-running with fire and sword a country temporarily disordered and helpless, bribing and murdering, annexing and stealing, and beginning that career of illegal and ‘legal’ plunder which has now [1930] gone on ruthlessly for one hundred and seventy-three years.

Invasions first by Mughals and then British East India Company – one thing in common was the looting of the wealth and suffering of people.  A war or a fight between people for that matter is never good.  Armed conflict, civil war, clashes and violence; - the ill after-effects are – looting, pillage, suffering of people,  malnourished children, weapon wounded victims, displacement, disappearances, sexual violence and more – sometimes a culture, a civilisation gets wiped out and there is huge  psychological impact that conflict has on the people it touches.

Malik Kafur (died 1316), also known as Taj al-Din Izz al-Dawla, was a  ruthless slave-general of the Delhi Sultanate ruler Alauddin Khalji. He was captured by Alauddin's general Nusrat Khan during the 1299 invasion of Gujarat, and rose to prominence in the 1300s.

The drain of wealth out of India by the British is a well-known fact that has been meticulously recorded by historians and economists. However, the drain of wealth originally started with the Islamic invaders who carted off prodigious quantities of wealth to their Arab, Persian, Turkic and Central Asian homelands for a longer period than the British in India. Muslim invaders also caused immense damage to our culture; hearts filled with malice and hatred they tried to destroy every beautiful art and did immense harm to womenfolk.   India was the world’s leading economy from 1 CE to 1000 CE but in the second millennium it lost  after the Islamic invaders razed India’s universities, disrupted the economic systems and caused havoc in religious and social life.

Babur invaded India at the behest of Daulat Khan Lodi and won the kingdom of Delhi by defeating the forces of Ibrahim Khan Lodi at Panipat in 1526 AD. He laid the foundation of the Mughal Empire.   History reversed in full circle at the Battle of Karnal – as Mughals desperately pleaded for mercy and  after many hours, Nader Shah relented and signalled a halt to the bloodshed by sheathing his battle sword once again. It has been estimated that during the course of six hours of savage butchery  in one day, 22 March 1739, approximately 20,000 to 30,000 Indian men, women and children were slaughtered by the Afsharid troops. Following his victory, Nader Shah marched to Delhi and occupied the capital in March 1739. Initially, he accepted a large ransom, but a rumor of his death sparked a riot in which some of his soldiers were killed.  In retaliation, Nader Shah ordered a city-wide massacre. An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 inhabitants were slaughtered by Persian troops in a single day, leading to horrific violence and looting. The city was systematically plundered for its immense wealth. Nader Shah seized the legendary Peacock Throne and the famed Koh-i-Noor diamond, among countless other treasures.

During 1310-1311, the Delhi Sultanate ruler Alauddin Khalji sent an army led by Malik Kafur to the southernmost kingdoms of India. After subjugating the Hoysalas, Malik Kafur invaded the Pandya kingdom (called Ma'bar in Muslim chronicles)  taking advantage of a war of succession between the Pandya brothers Vira and Sundara. During March–April 1311, he raided several places in the Pandya territory, including their capital Madurai. He was unable to make the Pandya king a tributary to the Delhi Sultanate, but obtained a huge plunder, including elephants, horses, gold and precious stones.

Depending on what we chose to read,  history teaches us various things.  Woraiyur, nearer Trichy was once the capital of Cholas – fact supported by archaeological and literary evidences.  The place was under the control of Cholas even during Kalabhra interregnum. In 1751-52 occurred the ‘siege of Trichnopoly’ by Chanda Sahib. There were some more battles too .. ..the islamic invasion was firmly entrenched in Northern India since the days of Mohammad of Ghori – and in the 13th century they travelled to southern peninsula too.  In history, some great revolutions occurred accidentally and perhaps the first invasion of Deccan too !  in Delhi, one of the slaves of Ghiyasuddin Balban raised himself to the throne and his generals ran South.   Ulugh Khan’s conquest set up a permanent sultanate at Madurai that held one of the cruelest regimes in Indian History and lasted for around forty years. There are Travel records made by a traveler named Ibn Batuta, who visited India and who also married one of the daughters of the Sultan himself but was horrified at the wanton cruelty and bloodshed. Even among themselves the various Sultans who rapidly succeeded each other for the throne were lusty for fellow blood as well – it was a regime of treachery.  Malik Kafur’s invasions of Malabar and South had the singular objective – ‘plunder’.   According to Amir Khusru ' the Malik represented that on the coast of Malabar were 500 elephants, larger than those which had been presented to the Sultan from warangal, and that  he combined the extirpation of the idolaters.

Moving away from the pillages, to us what is of significance is the glorious Temple at Srirangam and Sri Ranganathar.  The temple has great religious significance and has seen various  dynasties and some plundering too ! ~ it was the saddest of  days, when   it witnessed the massive invasion and innumerable killings of devout. Koyil Ozhugu, the  authentic records of events unravels the events  that unfolded at the time when thousands of Srivaishnavaites were massacred defending the holy place.

Next time, you visit Srirangam – have some extra time – first have darshan of Azhwar, Acaryas, Sri Ranga Nachiyar, Sri Ranga Nathar, Chakkarathazhwar, Sri Ramanujar – and before that walk on the sands near the ‘1000 pillared mantap and the astonishing Vellai gopuram’ -  feel the sand and mother earth, touch the pillars there – if it is late evening, sit with eyes closed – if fortunate, you will visualize the history – when few hundreds travelled far long with Sri Nam Perumal, with the zeal of protecting HIM !!  .. .. .. and also have darshan of Acaryan Pillai Logachariyar (at his sannathi near Udayavar sannathi)  – the hero behind this post.

and the efforts of our Acaryar Swami Pillai Logachar.

Tomorrow 30.10.2025  is ‘Thiruvonam in the month of Aippaisi’ – celebrating the birth of Sri Poigai Azhwar and Acarya Pillai Ulagariyar.  I am posting this lengthy article on Acarya – I am worthless ordinary moral with very little knowledge of our satsampradhayam.  Yet the life history of our Acaryar Logachar (more elaborately read and influenced by Thiruvarangan Ula) makes me piece together this article from various sources ..  it is a sad piece of history – in school books, we read of Islamic invasion and moghul kingdoms in Delhi and in the North without seriously realizing that they had its deep impact down South too, though there have not been battles of Panipat ! ~ miles away, following a coup that expelled a slave-turned begum and her son from the halls of royal power, Sultan Firoz Shah created Bahmani kingdom in Deccan – created by a rebellion against the Tughlakhs, this dynasty too survived centuries – the period around this time was dark hours as there were constant invasions, pillages, killings, rapes and anarchy on the other regions .. .. sad that our sampradhayam and Thiruvarangam too was deeply impacted.  Here is something on our glorious Acarya Pillai Logachar.

Pillai Ulagariyar sannathi at Thiruvarangam periya kovil

Thiruvarangam is the greatest of Divyadesams and Sriranga Vimanam owes its origin to Brahma, the creator, the first to get it and worshipped it for long in Satyaloka.  The Vimana was later obtained By Ikshvaku and later descended to mother earth, enabling all of us to have darshan at the Holy Sri Rangam divyadesam.  It is Emperuman, Sri Ranganathan, (Periya Perumal) who protects us – in His divine drama, there was a period of melancholy when thousands died in trying to protect Him from the marauding army of Malik Kafur  and his agent Ulugh Khan.

                          Just before the Emperumanar Udayavar Sannathi (Thaanana thirumeni – Sri Ramanujar Himself) – is the sannathi of  ‘Ulagariyar’.     I have read in my young days ‘Thiruvarangam Ula’ written by Sri Venugopalan (Pushpa Thangathurai)  and have heard this story many times from my mother too ~ and after knowing something on this, one tends to naturally go rushing to this sannathi, worship the acaryar – stand for a few minutes – turn back to see none is observing trying to hide the melancholic memories thinking of this great scholar who sacrificed at such an old age, protecting NamPerumal Himself ~ would one ever need a human to save God – that is one of His wishes and His  way of enacting plays testing us over the times.

Our Acaryar  hailed as ‘Pillai Lokacharyar’  ~ his father Vadakku Thiruveethipillai of his great affection for acharyar Nampillai, named his first son  thus.  Pillai Ulagariyar was born in Thiruvarangam in 1205.  He and his younger brother Azhagiya Manavala perumal nayanar grew up in the holy land of srirangam that lies between Thirukaveri and kollidam.   They learnt our sampradhAyam under the lotus feet of their father.  Before writing further – Srivaishnavam owes scholastic study to him through his magnum opus – Sri Vachana bushanam ~ a very small sample to know :

Vedas are divided into Poorva bhagam and Uttara bhagam. The former, also known as the karma bhagam is the samhita portion and the latter also referred as Vedantam or Jnyana bhagam is the portion of Upanishads. The Vedantam explains in detail, about the form, nature, qualities and the riches [vibhuthis] of Paramatma. To those who wish to learn, there could be a Q on which is to be relied upon – to which Acaryar ordains thus.  i.e., one can place reliance only upon Vedas / dharma sastras of great sages Manu, Parasara and others, and the Holy ithihasa puranas of Sri Ramayana and Sri Mahabaratham.  Sri Vachana Bhooshanam, the divine grantha authored by Sri Pillai lokacharyar has its first four sutras as the introduction which concludes by stating that among the Itihasas and Puranas, the instruments in deciding the true meanings of Vedanta, the Itihasas have more validity.  Our Acharyar Sri Manavala mamunigal was so deeply moved by its rich contents.

I am none to write about our sampradhayam – but more on what is read, a poignant piece of history of the travails at Thiruvarangam.   History is replete with melancholy ~ nothing can be more heart-rending than the real story of Thiruvaranga Chelvanar and the devotees of Bhooloka Vaikundam running places to save the idol from Islamic invasion of 14th century.  Thiruvarangan Ula ’ of Sri Venugopalan is a classic – when the invaders threaten to take over the beautiful holy island of Srirangam – the residents rise up to fight – they were not born fighters, neither had the physique, yet they possessed that indomitable will to do everything for Thiruvarangar. The book chronicles the preparations, fight with Sultan’s maurading army sacrificing valuable lives, devadasis doing kainkaryam at Temple killing themselves ~ finally a small group of people deciding that Srirangam is no longer a safe place [not for themselves] but for the Perumal – protecting the moolavar by building wall and running away with the Num Perumal, Uthsava idol.

At a ripe old age – Lokacharya led a small contingent of faithfulls and took Arangan to safety in a pallakku.   Fearing  that  they would  be  overtaken  if  they  went  along  the  road,  they avoided  the  road-way  and  proceeded  slowly  through  jungles and  unfrequented  tracts  across  the  state  of  Pudukottai, marching in tough terrains, jungles braving wild animals and murderous thieves.  Near  Tiruppattur  they  branched  off,  avoiding  the  main  road  from  Tiruppattur  to  Madura  because  they  had  heard  of  the  near  approach  of  the enemy.  Lokacharya  fled  for  shelter  to  Tirukkoshtiyur  about six  miles  from  Tiruppattur  on  the  modern  road  from  Tiruppattur to  Sivaganga.  It  was  probably  on  that  occasion  that the  Muhammadan  forces  encamped  in  the  temple  precincts at  Tiruppattur,  and  it  was  too  dangerous  a  proximity for  Lokacharya  and  his  companions  to  continue  in  Tirukkoshtiyur. They  therefore  made  a  further  detour  to  the  east  and  getting  through  a  more  or  less  dense  forest  region, they  came  to  a  place  called  Jyotishkudi  where  they  lived  a  few  months.

During  this most challenging times,   the  bulk  of the  citizens  of  Srlrangam  had been butchered,  temple itself  sacked  and  desecrated,  and  all  those  citizens  that Lokacharya  knew   and   cared   for   had  suffered  death.

Pillai logachar crossing Cauvery - depiction

[the thiruvarasu identification and in its present form owes a lot to many people, most important among them being Madurai Prof. Dr Aranganathan Swami]

Most of our preceptors lived peacefully extolling Emperuman, they have handed over to us treasure trove of bakthi literature – there was this tragic period when our Namperumal [Thiruvarangar] was in exile ~ close to 6 decades - and great deal of credit goes to Acharyar Ulagariyar in protecting the Uthsava idol and ensuring that posterity could worship NumPerumal happily.

Our Sampradhayam thrives on the glorious literature handed over to us by our greatly learned Acaryas and the extreme sacrifices of Sri Pillai Logachar and thousands of nameless others.     Next time you visit Srirangam, take some extra minutes to go inside this sannathi [just before that of Sri Ramanujar] thinking of his glory and his sacrifice.

Recently was fortunate to visit Madurai and had opportunity to visit Pillai Logachariyar thiruvarasu at Jyothishkudi.  At the foothills of Yanaimalai in a place now called Y.Othakadai [யா.ஒத்தக்கடை கிராமம்] is the beautiful Yoga Narasimha swamy temple.  At the tail of the hill, on the other side – is Acaryar thiruvarasu.  From Madurai Mattuthavani bus stand – this is around 12 kms.  One can easily locate and reach Othakadai Narasimhar thirukkovil and from there some mini bus is available; autos also ply from that place.  If you travel in your own vehicle – follow a map of reaching the other side of the hill and move towards its foot at Y Kodikulam and as you pass Govt Kallar Middle school, this place is hardly a km or two.

Location of Thiruvarasu : from Yanamalai adivaram Sri Yoga Narasimhar thirukkovil, travel on the path abutting the hills and on the other side, nearer the school, this place can be located.  Address :  Acaryar Pillai Ulagariyar thiruvarasu, Y. Kodikulam Road, Narasingam, Madurai, Tamil Nadu 625104.  If you search – X6H5+J76 on Google Maps, it will   show this temple’s location in Narasingam, Madurai district.

There is a beautiful lotus pond & a  Vinayaka temple – then a Sivan temple and a temple of ‘Malaichamy’ – from here on, footwear is not allowed.  Inside the temple of Malaichamy, women are not allowed.   After that nearer the foothills, there is an ancient temple of Sri Veda Narayana Perumal.. .. few steps above lies the thiruvarasu.

Sri Veda Narayana Perumal at adivaram - Jyothishkudi
