Saturday Oct 29, 2022 (Aippaisi 12)   was the great day of Acaryan Sarrumurai ~ Aippasiyil Thirumoolam.   There was no rain interruption and in  the morning purappadu, the cynosure of eyes were the  spotless white parasols – the divine kodais    ~ 10 sets of them – the divine kodais 20 in no.  ..  ..  The morning of the busy day  dawned so gracefully – for those of us would never forget the greatest darshan one would dream -  the divine blessing of  ‘Kaithala Sevai’ ~ [Lord Parthasarathi and consorts being carried in the hands of the battars] – then the umbrellas were getting opened up – spotless white parasols – the divine kodais  ‘Thirumoolam in Aippasi’  the day commemorating the birth of divine Acharyar Swami Manavala Mamunigal.  The purappadu   started around 7  am –  hundreds of us were waiting for that grand moment of our Acaryan having grand purappadu with our Emperuman Sri Parthasarathi.. .. then there was grand purappadu in the evening – our Acaryar with Emperuman.

Acaryar Mamunigal is fondly known as ‘Yatheendra Pravanar’ arising out of his irresistible attachment to the lotus feet of Sri Ramanujar [Yatheendrar].  Sri  Manavala Mamunigal is the incarnation of Adisesha.   One must adore and be attached to their Acharyan and only the direction of Acharyar will lift us from all earthly evils – and for Us fallen at the feet called ‘Ponnadiyam Sengamalam’ – Swami Manavala Mamunigal will direct us and take us to salvation.  Those of us who try and uphold the ideals of our religion and its cultural heritage, will sure be benfitted as it then becomes the responsibility of Acharya to take care of Sishya's Atma guna poorthi.

Of  the many works, ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’ is one which all of us should know and recite regularly.  There are 73 paasurams + thanian given  by Kovil Kandadai annan and another one rendered by Erumbiappa was rendered in the morning  purappadu.  There was another purappadu in the evening too ~ Emperuman enjoys being with him and hence there is purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi with Mamunigal in the morning  and the evening.  Here are some photos of the evening purappadu in which Iramanuja Noorranthathi was rendered in the goshti.

Acharyar Manavala Mamunigal Sarrumurai 2022 - thirukkudai kainkaryam

திருக்குடைகள் அணிவகுப்பு !  ~  குடை கைங்கர்யம்

No clouds in my stones;  Let it rain, I hydroplane in the bank

Comin' down like Dow Jones; When the clouds come, we gone

We Roc-A-Fella; We fly higher than weather

For those of us used to ‘rain, rain, go away! – come again another day rhymes’ – the above could be new.  In an interview, Rihanna explained what “Umbrella” meant to her; “An umbrella is protection, it protects you from rain. The rain in this case is negativeness and vulnerability.”

An umbrella or parasol is a folding canopy supported by wooden or metal ribs that is usually mounted on a wooden, metal, or plastic pole. It is designed to protect a person against rain or sunlight. The term umbrella is traditionally used when protecting oneself from rain.  Often the difference is the material used for the canopy; some parasols are not waterproof, and some umbrellas are transparent. Umbrella canopies may be made of fabric or flexible plastic.   These primarily,   are  hand-held portable devices sized for personal use. The largest hand-portable umbrellas are golf umbrellas.

Back home, there was some controversy  sparked over Chennai Mayor's act of holding an umbrella for Tamil Nadu's minister.  The opposition parties strongly condemned the act.    Away in US as per  Marine Corps uniform regulations, the men are not allowed to carry or use umbrellas while in uniform. Female Marines can carry “an all-black, plain standard, or collapsible umbrella at their option during inclement weather” but not with combat uniforms. All of which means that when Marines stand sentry outside the White House, they often get wet.

In every purappadu – there are so many attractions – Emperuman – arulicheyal goshti, sripadhamthangigal, Archakas (battacharyas) and many many kainkaryabarargal – one among them doing a tough kainkaryam are the bearers of Thirukudai (the white decorative parasol – umbrellas) for Emperuman.  Ever wondered how difficult it is ? .. ………… please ponder.

I have been posting in detail every year the grand occasion “Aippasi Thirumoolam’  hailing the birth of our Supreme ‘non-pareil’ Acarya Swami Manavala Mamunigal’.  On His Sarrumurai day in the morning Mamunigal has  grand purappadu with Sri Parthasarathi Perumal having  20 kudais.  The kudais  ~ white kudais (parasols) look great and are great attraction of Thondai mandalam Thirukachi, Thiruvallikkeni, Thiruevvul and many other divyadesams – in these places there will be no purappadu in divyadesams for Emperuman without kudai (for us Adisesha is the divine kudai for Emperuman)..

I have never tried this but have  always observed from close quarters wondering how difficult it is – ‘thirukudai kainkaryam’ – lifting the thirukudai is a massive effort – the weight is at the top as one controls and manages its weight (more so with wind blowing ferociously) as one walks closer to Emperuman covering Him !!  During purappadu, they carry the thirukudai on madi (the thick cloth tightly worn around the waist) – and in vahana purappadu – thirukudaigal are placed on the sideboard of the vahanam and is held by Battacharyas.  Holding them is an art and is challenging too – it is tough but graciously done by Thirukovil Battacharyargal.

This morning (Aippaisi Thirumoolam) at Thiruvallikkeni  Swami Mamanvala Mamunigal had purappadu with Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman – there were 10 sets, yes, 20 white beautiful umbrellas celebrating the grand occasion.  Here are some photos of Acharyar Manavala Mamunigal, aerial view of photos and more specially photos of those who carried the divine umbrellas (sorry if I had missed out some of the kudai kainkaryabarar)

For the divine the post ends here .. .. there is some more for those who would like to read some sequence of the song at the start !!

"Umbrella" is a song by Barbadian singer Rihanna from her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007). It features American rapper Jay-Z, who co-wrote the song. "Umbrella" is a pop, hip hop and R&B song with rock elements, referring to a romantic and platonic relationship and the strength of that relationship.

“Umbrella” changed everything for Rihanna. The Barbados-born pop sensation had burst onto the scene in 2005 with “Pon De Replay,” reaching No. 2 in the US and hitting   “Umbrella” marked the point where Rihanna not only enjoyed one of the biggest international hits of the decade, but also found an identity of her own.  It could all have been very different. The song was originally offered to Britney Spears and then to Mary J. Blige, both of whom turned it down.
