Sri Thelliya Singar Thavanothsavam day 2 ~ Sri Murali Kannan Thirukolam

In Jaipur, Holi is celebrated in some Krishna temples as Phag Utsav with devotional singing; Raslila dances, folk dances, classical dances and more with Holi with flower petals to celebrate the divine love between Radha and Krishna. Holi celebrates the divine prema  of Krishna and Radha at Jaipur's most famous historic Govind Devji temple. Holi is played with flowers instead of colours.

The legend is that when flowers were in full bloom during spring time, Krishna played the flute and all the senses of residents came together to create divinity and the gopis spontaneously danced with Krishna to that music of flute on the sands of the Yamuna and in the garden of Vrindavan.

One would well remember the Kannadasan song :

Lord Krishna the divine flautist enchants us all. Flute is a family of a musical instrument in the woodwind group.

I have been posting about the serene Thavana Uthsavam that is underway at Thiruvallikkeni Divyadesam. On all the 3 days of Thavanothsavam, Sri Azhagiya Singar has different sarruppadi [Thirukolams] –  Yesterday 27th Mar 2016 was  day 2 of the Uthsavam and Sri Azhagiya Singar blessed us as ‘Murali Kannan’ – the flautist.

Here are some photos of evening purappadu inside Thavana Uthsava bungalow.

Sri Azhagiya Singar Thavana Uthsavam day 2 : 2016 ~ morning purappadu

At Thiruvallikkeni, now it is Thavana Uthsavam for Sri Azhagiya Singar. In what could be the shortest of the purappadus, this morning, Thelliya Singar had purappadu from the western gate to the Thavana Uthsava bungalow.

Today is day 2 – there is Thirumanjanam, purappadu inside the bungalow and periya mada veethi purappadu in the evening.  Here are some photos of morning purappadu, whence Thelliya Singar and His consorts adorned a single garland.

Thirumayilai Adhi Kesava Perumal Garuda Sevai 2016

Thiruvallikkeni is part of Thondaimandalam.. associated with Pallava dynasty.  The Pallava Kings ruled regions of northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh between the 2nd and 9th centuries CE.  In divyaprabandham, alongside Thiruvallikkeni, Mylapore is associated as “Mylai Thiruvallikkeni”.

I had posted on Pallava Uthsavam.  Pallavam is a period – it is the period when tender shoots spring up. At the divine feet of Lord Ranganatha, tender foliage of mango is kept. For the foodie, ‘vadu mangai’ ~ the pickle of maavadu [tender mango : tiny baby mangoes] are great favourites. With the onset of summer of these small early staged mangoes hit the market and are straightway hits. ~ there is no better place to buy them than the mada veethi of Mylapore ….as you walk nearer, there is the famous Chithirai kulam belonging to Thirumylai Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal kovil, an ancient temple of Mylapore.

It is the time of annual Brahmothsavam and today morning it was the glittering Garuda vahanam.  The speciality of this temple is the importance accorded to Sri Peyalwar in every ritual, being his birth place.  Today too, Sri Peyazhwar in Hamsa vahanam welcomed Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal in golden Garuda vahanam.  There was oyyali [Aesal too] .. here are some photos taken during the purappadu at mylai mada veethi, this morning.

Panguni Uthiram Kannadi Garuda Sevai for Sri Ranganathar 2016

Panguni Uthiram is a special day ... at Thiruvallikkeni, it marks Thirukalyanam of Sri Vedavalli Thayar with Sri Mannathar (Sri Ranganathar); at Thiruvarangam, there is the Serthi of Divya thampathigal.......... and at Sri Villiputhur, occurs the famous Thirukalyanam of Sri Andal with Sri Ranga Mannar.  It was on this day, our Emperumanar (Udayavar) recited ‘Gadhya thrayam’ before the divya dhampathigal.

In Nachiyar Thiromozhi, Andal elaborates Her dream marriage with the Paramapurusha, describing the rituals associated with the marriages.  She speaks of that Great Sriman Narayana, the One who owns us all, the One complete with all Kalyana Gunams; the One to whom we all should get attached not in this life but in all our births; Andal dreams of Her Divine Marriage with the Lord. ~ and that comes true on Panguni Uthiram day.

Here are some photos of purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni.

PS :  In earlier days, puranic and religious stories were being filmed.  Andal Thirukkalyanam was a Tamil film released in  1937 by Saradha Films, directed by R Prakash.

dismantling Theppam ~ Sripadham thangigal at work

How would you spend your Sunday ? how do you relax ??

In Thiruvallikkeni, festivities in the temple never stops……. After the grand Theppothsavam [float festival]; it was Thavana Uthsavam and concurrently Pallava Uthsavam.

For those doing kainkaryam, there is always work ~ the much loved service to the lotus feet of Lord Sri Parthasarathi.   It would be enchanting to see the beautifully decorated float [theppam] and more so, to see our Lord inside. Once it is done, the float gets dismantled ~ the construction is complex and dismantling is tiresome…..  and here are Sripadhamthangigal of Thiruvallikkeni enthusiastically at work.

Sri Ranganathar Pallava Uthsavam @ Triplicane 2016

In Thiruvallikkeni,  there is festivity all the time.  After the grand Theppothsavam [float festival]; it was Thavana Uthsavam and concurrently  Pallava Uthsavam too started.  Today 20th Mar 2016 is day 2 of Pallava Uthsvam and there was purappadu of Lord Ranganathar in Sesha vahanam.

Thiruvallikkeni is part of Thondaimandalam.. associated with Pallava dynasty.  The Pallava Kings ruled regions of northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh between the 2nd and 9th centuries CE. The Pallavas gained prominence after the eclipse of the Satavahana dynasty.  Of the many Kings, Mahendravarman I  (600–630 CE) was very prominent and it was during regime, Pallavas fougth Chalukyas – Pulikesi – the Vengi wars.  Mahendravarman was succeeded to the throne by his more famous son Narasimhavarman I.    Narasimhavarman I fondly known as ‘maamallan’ fondly shared his father’s  love of art and completed the work started by Mahendravarman in Mahabalipuram.  Now don’t get carried away – ‘Pallava Uthsavam’ is not associated with Pallavas or any other rulers for that matter.

Pallavam is a period – it is the period when tender shoots spring up. During Pallava Uthsavam,  ‘Brindaranya Sthala mahimai’ is read before Sri Ranganathar  at Thiruvaimozhi mandapam inside Sri Parthasarathi Swami Temple.  After this there is periya maada veethi purappadu everyday.  On Panguni Uthiram day, Pallava Uthsavam concludes with Sri Ranganathar astride ‘kannadi Garudan’ and later there is Sri Vedavalli Thayar Srimannathar Thirukkalyanam.

One odd reference to Pallavam is found in Thirumangai Azhwar in his  Thirumozhi ~ ~: பல்லவம்  திகழ்  பூங்கடம்பேறி  அக்காளியன்  பணவரங்கில்*, ஒல்லை வந்துறப்பாய்ந்து அருநடஞ்செய்த  உம்பர்கோனுறை கோயில் – Kaliyan describes the glory of Emperuman at Van Purudothamam ~ a divyadesam at Thirunangur (Perumal here is Sri Purushothaman) ... Azhwar calls him the King of Kings – says the Lord ascended a Kadamba tree with plenty of tender leaves, jumped on the hood of Kalinga...

Here are some photos taken during the Pallava Uthsava Day 2 today.  One can observe the just born foliage of Mango leaves in the lotus feet of Lord Ranganathar.
