Purattasi Thirumoolam 2026 ~ Jadwiga "King" of Poland'

Imp. Pre-script:  Today 16th Oct 2026   is the 289th  day of the year (290th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar; 76 days remain until the end of the year.  This post is in two parts – first on Jadwiga (History) of Europe and 2nd part on Swami Manavala Mamunigal.

Jadwiga (1374 – 17 July 1399), also known as Hedwig   was Queen of the Kingdom of Poland, as well as its last hereditary ruler.  Born in Buda, she was the youngest daughter of Louis I of Hungary and Elizabeth of Bosnia.

Jadwiga was crowned "King" in Poland's capital, Kraków, on 16 October 1384. Crowned as "King of Poland" not as  "Queen" to reflect the fact that she was a sovereign in her own right.   She was married at a very young age !  The Polish lords did not want to accept fourteen-year-old William of Habsburg as Jadwiga's husband and Polish sovereign.  They thought that the inexperienced William and his Austrian kinsmen could not safeguard Poland's interests against its powerful neighbours, especially the House of Luxembourg which controlled Bohemia and Brandenburg, and had a strong claim on Hungary. The  lords of Lesser Poland were the first to suggest that Jadwiga should marry the pagan duke Władysław II Jagiełło of Lithuania.[61]

Władysław II Jagiełło signed the Union of Krewo in August 1385, promising Queen Elizabeth's representatives and the Polish lords' envoys that he would convert to Catholicism, together with his pagan kinsmen and subjects, if Jadwiga married him. He also pledged to pay 200,000 florins to William of Habsburg in compensation.   According to a Polish legend, Jadwiga agreed to marry Władysław II Jagiełło due to divine inspiration during her long prayers before a crucifix in Wawel Cathedral.  The Polish lords' envoys informed Władysław II that they would obey him if he married Jadwig.  Władysław II went on to Kraków, where he was baptised, receiving the Christian name, Władysław, in Wawel.  On 18 February 1386, Władysław II, who was between 22 and 35 years old, married 12-year-old Jadwiga.  Władysław II styled himself as dominus et tutor regni Poloniae ("lord and guardian of the Kingdom of Poland") in his first charter issued after the marriage.

Jadwiga was childless for over a decade, which, according to chronicles written in the Teutonic lands, caused conflicts between her and her husband.  She became pregnant in September 1398.  Vytautas, in order to bolster his authority over the Russian principalities, decided to launch an expedition against the Golden Horde with his new Tatar allies, including Tokhtamysh, who been deposed by Timur.  On the occasion of the expected birth to the royal couple, Vytautas sent expensive gifts, including a silver cradle, to the royal court on behalf of himself and his wife, Anna.  The first horoscopes written for Jadwiga's and Władysław II's child in mid-September 1398 predicted a son.  However, a girl was delivered on 22 June 1399 at Wawel Castle.  The newborn princess was named Elizabeth Bonifacia  after Jadwiga's mother and Pope Boniface IX, who, in a letter  of  1399, had agreed to be godfather under the condition that the infant be named after him. She was baptised - However, the infant died after only three weeks. ,  Jadwiga, too, was on her deathbed. Stanisław of Skarbimierz expressed hope that she would survive, describing her as the spiritual mother of the poor, weak, and ill of Poland. She advised her husband to marry Anna of Cilli, Casimir the Great's granddaughter — which he did — and died on 17 July 1399, four days after her newborn daughter.  She was the last hereditary ruler of Poland; her husband and his descendants retained the crown as elective monarchs.  Jadwiga's decision to marry the "elderly" Władysław II instead of her beloved fiancé, William of Habsburg, has often been described as a sacrifice for her country in Polish historiography.   Enough of History !

Today is Friday – 29th day of Purattasi, 16th day of Oct 2026 – today is day 5 of Navarathiri Uthsavam and in the evening at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, Sri Vedavalli thayar will have purappadu in Velli simha vahanam.  Today is day 4 of Sri Peyalwar thiruvavathara uthsavam – and today being Thirumoolam, Swami Manavalamamunigal will have ul-purappadu with Vedavalli thayar.

Acaryar Mamunigal is fondly known as ‘Yatheendra Pravanar’ arising out of his irresistible attachment to the lotus feet of Sri Ramanujar [Yatheendrar].  Sri  Manavala Mamunigal is the incarnation of Adisesha.  One must adore and be attached to their Acharyan and only the direction of Acharyar will lift us from all earthly evils – and for Us fallen at the feet called ‘Ponnadiyam Sengamalam’ – Swami Manavala Mamunigal will direct us and take us to salvation.  Those of us who try and uphold the ideals of our religion and its cultural heritage, will sure be benfitted as it then becomes the responsibility of Acharya to take care of Sishya's Atma guna poorthi.

Of  the many works, ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’ is one which all of us should know and recite regularly.  There are 73 paasurams + thanian given  by Kovil Kandadai annan and another one rendered by Erumbiappa was rendered in the morning  purappadu.  There was another purappadu in the evening too ~ Emperuman enjoys being with him and hence there is purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi with Mamunigal in the morning  and the evening.  Here are some photos of the evening purappadu in which Iramanuja Noorranthathi was rendered in the goshti.

On this significant day, here are some photos of Swami Manavala Mamunigal at Melukote Thirunarayanapuram  taken in   earlier visit.

Sri Parthasarathi vidayarri - Trichur Brothers 2026

Sri Parthasarathi vidayarri - Trichur Brothers   2026

After the grand Chithirai  Brahmothsavam for Sri Parthasarathi Perumal at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam , it  is  7 days of rest called ‘Vidayarri’.

Vidaayaaerri  is time for music too !!  -  vidayarri (period of rest) for Sri Parthasarathi Perumal.  Music kutchery by renowned people have been arranged, coordinated by Sri Parthasarathi Swami sabha.  On day 3 of Vidaayarri  today (13.5.20263) is was grand performance by  Trichur Brothers.

Rest, repose, as relief from weariness; இளைப்பாறல். 2. That which affords rest or relief;  இளைப்பாற்றுவது.   3. Festivities within the temple following the main festival,

The performers of the day Trichur Brothers, Srikrishna Mohan and Ramkumar Mohan are renowned Carnatic Musicians. Sons of veteran Mridangam Vidwan Shri Trichur R Mohan, the brothers were exposed to Carnatic Music from a very tender age.   They  trained under the late Neyyantikara Mohanchandran for 10 years. They were titled "Trichur Brothers" by HH Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Kanchi, Shri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal.

The duos hail from a traditional business family in Trichur known as the "SitaRam Group". The brothers along with their family are currently settled in Chennai.  The duos are known for their uncompromising attitude towards Bhavam (Bhakthi, or Spiritual quotient) and Pataanthara (Orthodoxy with respect to the composers and their compositions).  They also adopt a unique style of Raga delineation where both of them exchange phrases, long and short, in exploring the nuances of a Raga (Musical Scale).

Both are qualified Chartered Accountants.  The  CA professionals also have a   band called  ‘Anubhoothi’ which performs from Carnatic to rock and jazz. They were further famous through the anthem for the Clean Ganga campaign ‘Namami Gange’ which garnered them national attention.  Here is a short video taken during their performance  :   https://youtu.be/JhbcUEWIBqY

My friend Carnatic critic Essel identifies this to be :   a varnam in Shanmukhapriyā, and the video captures  the muktāyi śvaras in the Charanam.

Thirumylai Karpagambal Navarathiri darshan 2026

Thirumylai Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple is an iconic,  very famous ancient temple of Lord Shiva and His consort  Parvathi reverred here as Karpagambal.  The temple's sthala puranam mentions Goddess Uma taking the form of a peahen and worshipping Lord Shiva at Mylapore.  During Navaratri, worship of Karpagambal brings the focus to the Divine Mother. The festival's changing forms of the Goddess provide an opportunity to reflect on the many aspects of Shakti—compassion, wisdom, courage and protection. It is  an architectural masterpiece

The temple is   a Paadal Petra Sthalam and is celebrated in the ancient 7th-century Thevaram hymns by the revered Saivite saints Saint Sambandar and Appar.  The temple was built by Pallava Dynasty in the 7th century CE near the seashore. After its destruction by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century (where the San Thome Basilica now stands), the temple was reconstructed about 1 km inland at its current location by the Vijayanagara Kings. Thirugnanasambandar‘s   6th song in Poompavaipathikam and Arunagirinathar‘s 697th song in Thirumylai Thirupugazh, have  references   to the Kapaleeswarar temple being located by a seashore.

The most famous festival of the temple is the Arupathimoovar festival, named after the sixty-three Nayanmars who have attained salvation. All sixty-three Nayanmar are taken out in procession.

Thirumylai Salai Amman

It is a place that predates British rule by several centuries; it was occupied by the Portuguese in 1523, which  lasted until 1749, later falling  into the hands of the British East India Company.   It is “Mylapore” [Thiru Mayilai],  a cultural hub; one of the oldest residential parts of the city, also known as VEdapuri and Mayurapuri.

Thirumylai Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple is a very famous ancient temple of Lord Shiva and His consort  Parvathi reverred here as Karpagambal.  The temple's sthala puranam mentions Goddess Uma taking the form of a peahen and worshipping Lord Shiva at Mylapore.  During Navaratri, worship of Karpagambal brings the focus to the Divine Mother. There are many other Saivaite temples around … and today while turning from Nadu Street, had darshan of Salai Amman in alankaram as Madurai Meenakshi Amman.

Around Kapaleeswarar Temple and Sri Kesava Perumal thirukkovil – some of the streets are : Nadu Street, Salai Street, New Street, Devadi Street, Appu St, Solaiappan St and .. .. .. it was at the corner of Salai Street joining Nadu St., this Amman stood in full decoration and granting wishes to devotees.

It is Arulmigu Sivasakthi Salaiamman Thirukkovil – situate on the entrance of the street and perhaps the Street (Salai in Temple) itself got its name from Salai Amman or !!  - this place is also known as Girija Garden.

Some web searches landed in Mylapore Times,   that mentioned the  Asthabandana Maha Kumbhabhishekam of Arulmigu Sivasakthi Salaiamman Temple on 15 April 2012, with morning ceremonies from 8:00 to 9:30 and a procession at 7:30 p.m.

Nearby Devadi Street offers another glimpse into the layered history of old Mylapore. Historical research has connected its earlier name with the Persian-derived term deorhi, meaning a doorway or entrance, and with the presence of the Nawab of Arcot in the area during the eighteenth century. [excerpted from famous historian V Sriram]

His Holiness Azhwar Thirunagari Jeeyar Swami mangalasasanam @ Thiruvallikkeni

Of the Nava Thirupathi divyadesams, Thiruk Kurugoor is hailed as Azhwar Thirunagari, as it was here Swami Nammalwar was born.   Madura Kavigal saw the leading light from Thiru Ayodhya and travelled all the way to Azhwar Thirunagari and identified  Nammazhwar in the Puliyamaram.

Located in this holy place is the Thennacharya samprathaya Mutt – Sree Azhwar Thirunagari Emperumar Mutt – the present pontiff of this Mutt His Holiness Srimath Paramahamsa Ranga Ramanuja Emperumanaar Jeeyar did mangalasasanam at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam this morning.

Triplicane Ellai Amman Navrathri 2026

Triplicane is famous for Sri Parthasarathi Swami Thirukkovil.  There are some other ancient temples too in the vicinity.

Arulmigu Ellamman Temple is located in the south   of Tiruvallikeni,  about half a kilometer from the western entrance – Sri Azhagiya Singar sannathi.  The temple entrance is in Sundaramurthi vinayagar koil street, while at the back runs Triplicane High Road.  The temple faces east with  dwajasthambam in front of the temple.  Ellai Amman is in sitting posture, big and majestic and grants boons to devotees.  In the praharam, Sri Vinayagar, Kasi Viswanathar Visalakshi, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Dakshinamurthy, Nagars under a neem tree, Utsava murtis,  Navagrahas, and Natarajar are installed.

Today Sri Ellamman was decorated specially on the occasion of Navrathri and here is a photo of the Uthsavar.

famed beautiful corridors of Arulmigu Nellaiyappar thirukkovil

Tirunelveli locally Nellai and historically (during British rule) as Tinnevelly, is   located 700 km (430 mi) southwest of the state capital Chennai, 58 km (36 mi) away from Thoothukudi and 73 km (45 mi) from Kanyakumari.   for halwa, a sweet made of wheat, sugar and ghee.

The temple that gave the place its name is the famed  Arulmigu Nellaiyappar thirukkovil. This is a beautiful example of the architectural grandeur of the Sri Nellaiyappar – Gandhimathi Ambal Temple, one of the largest and most historically significant temples in Tamil Nadu.

Here is a photograph capturing two sides of   the pillared corridors  (people and some other objects removed with AI).  Every granite pillar here is  a masterpiece of craftsmanship, adorned with exquisitely carved yalis, deities, dancers, and mythical motifs. The perfectly aligned rows of pillars create a striking perspective, drawing the devotee's gaze naturally towards the sanctum, symbolizing the spiritual journey from the material world to the Divine.
