celestial conjunction of Moon & Venus at Palayamkottai temple

Palayamkottai, often called the "Oxford of South India", is a prominent educational and residential hub located across the Thamirabarani River from Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. Steeped in history, it houses the historic Central Prison where freedom fighters were held.

The temple that gave the town  its name is the famed Nellaiyappar thirukkovil. Sri Nellaiyappar – Gandhimathi Ambal Temple, one of the largest and most historically significant temples in Tamil Nadu is an architectural grandeur. Palayamkottai is the twin town of Tirunelveli. The name Palayamkottai is a Tamil portmanteau: Palayam (a military settlement or camp) + Kottai (fort).  Historically, it denoted a locality centered around an old fort used to administer surrounding districts.  Earlier, the area was known as Sri Vallavan Mangalam, where mangalam indicates land granted free to Brahmins, hinting at its agrarian–temple-linked past.  Like much of the Tirunelveli region, Palayamkottai saw successive rule by major South Indian powers: the Pandyas, Cholas, Pallavas, and also the Kalabhras, with local chieftains (including the Palaiyakkars) playing a key role.   Palayamkottai is closely associated with Veerapandiya Kattabomman, the famous Polygar (Palaiyakkarar) who led one of the earliest armed resistances against the British East India Company in the late 18th century.  He is often remembered as a freedom fighter from this region, and his legacy is a major part of local historical identity.  During the rule of Viswanatha Nayak, his prime minister Ariyanatha Mudaliar established 72 feudal administrative divisions called Palayams.   The fort had four distinct entry gates facing major routes: Tiruvannathapuram, Madurai, Tiruchendur, and Tenkasi.  After the polygar wars, the  British later dismantled most of the fort and the   town became a strategic British garrison town.

Not intended to be a chronicle of the history of Palayamkottai but about a late evening at this place when ‘Crescent Moon & Venus saluted the Lord’ – at Sri Vedanarayanan Alagiyamannar Shri Rajagopalaswamy Temple,   one of the oldest and   massive Vaishnava temples in the region.    Facing east with a stunning 5-tier Rajagopuram, it features a unique blend of traditional Tamil Dravidian architecture intertwined with northern Madhura Krishna temple design styles. The inner sanctum preserves inscriptions dating back across centuries.

The Moolavar is worshipped as Sri Vedanarayana Perumal and Raja Gopal Swamy alongside Thayars Sri Vedavalli and Sri Kumudavalli.

Here are couple of photos taken at the same place - Sri Vedanarayanan Alagiyamannar Shri Rajagopalaswamy Temple in Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli at around 7 pm on 18.7.2026 with Samsung Galaxy S24 FE.  The most striking feature is the waxing crescent Moon with a very bright object a little below and to its right. .. .. and that  bright object is   Venus.  A young crescent Moon and brilliant Venus appearing together shortly after sunset is one of the most attractive evening sky sights. Venus is bright enough that many people mistake it for a UFO or an aircraft.

My fortune that   the temple and the celestial conjunction appear  in a single frame. Around 7 PM in July at this place  is the beginning of the blue hour.

Instead of a black sky, one could see: deep cobalt blue, soft twilight as also enough ambient light to reveal the temple carvings.  In Srivaishnava parlance,  devotees often associate: the crescent Moon with serenity  &  Venus (Shukra) with beauty and prosperity.

The coordinates are:

       Latitude: 8°43′26.9″ N

       Longitude: 77°44′07.0″ E

which is   Sri Vedanarayanan Alagiyamannar Shri Rajagopalaswamy Temple, Palayamkottai.  On that day, I  unintentionally captured what astronomers call a Moon–Venus conjunction though they are millions of kilometres apart—

       Moon ≈ 380,000 km away

Venus ≈ tens of millions of kilometres away

—they appear close together from Earth.

These conjunctions are among the most photographed astronomical events because they are both visually striking and relatively uncommon in exactly the same geometry.

Pictorially I am trying to depict :  :

1.       Full view of temple vimanam with Moon and Venus — introducing the sacred setting.

2.       Gateway with Moon and Venus — highlighting the celestial conjunction.

3.       Close-up of the vimana with the crescent Moon — concluding with the architectural grandeur.

Together they tell the story of an evening at Sri Vedanarayanan Alagiyamannar Shri Rajagopalaswamy Temple, where the sky itself seemed to participate in the beauty of the moment.

Look forward to your feedback / comments

Sri Azhagiya Singar Chandra Prabhai and Moon !!!

Alignment of Celestial and Symbolism of Moons.

Sri Thelliya Signar Chandra Prabhai purappadu

The waxing gibbous Moon present, perhaps watching from the sky – the  Chandra Prabhai Vahana purappadu, as Sri Azhagiya Sinar  blesses devotees beneath the night sky.

A celestial moon above, and the symbolic Chandra Prabhai below—both celebrating the Lord's divine radiance.

Please note – this is a composite (collage) image. [ChatGPT edited] Chandra Prabhai was filmed as it aligned with Western gopuram; the  Moon was photographed separately, from the same location and on the same night, and has been artistically composited into the scene, placed exactly where it was seen when photographing the  purappadu.

As usual look forward to your feedback / comments.

Sri Azhagiya Singar Hamsa vahanam ~ the celestial connect

In the ongoing Aani Brahmothsavam of Sri Azhagiya Singar, today is day 3 and in the evening it was Hamsa vahanam.  Took this photo as Sri Thelliya Singar purappadu on Hamsa vahanam had just crossed the Western Gopuram at Thiruvallikkeni, with the moon right on top.

Under the watchful moon and amidst countless devotees, the Lord graces the streets in all His glory. Every step is a blessing; every chant, an offering.

When the heavens lend their moon, the temple its light, and devotees their shoulders, a procession becomes a celebration of faith.

It is waxing phase and couple of days towards Full Moon (Pournami) – the sky was dark probably with rain-bearing clouds and Moon was a bit hazy.  This is a photo taken with Pixel Pro 8 as I tried to capture Sripadhamthangis (the bearers); people around; Hamsa Vahanam with Sri Azhagiya Singar, Triplicane Gopuram, dark sky and .. .. Moon !!

The photograph perhaps  tells three stories at once:

The heavens – the moon watching over the festival.

The temple – represented by the illuminated gopuram.

The devotees – carrying the Lord through the streets.

For sure, most of us try to focus deep on Perumal and have a beautiful close-up picture – this captures the relationship between the divine, the temple, and the community.

As could be deciphered, this  photograph has three distinct layers, which makes it visually interesting.

·       Upper layer – the sky :  moon sitting high on purappadu; Clouds providing a natural spotlight and perhaps there is a Planet or Star – is that Jupiter !! below the moon.

·       In the middle layer, there is the   illuminated gopuram emerging between the two ceremonial umbrellas.

·       Lower layer has the beautiful Golden Hamsa vahanam with Perumal – around it – Sripathamthangigal, Battacharyargal, devotees and more.

However, the  Moon has neither the shape nor clarity .. .. the  bright "flare" or glowing patch around the moon is not entirely a camera defect. It is a combination of  thin clouds passing over the moon; moonlight scattering through the moisture in clouds, giving a soft glowing halo; high dynamic range; focus on Perumal creating lens flare and there was bright floodlight too.

Interesting ! look forward to your feedback … thanks to ChatGPT for the editing and detailing part.

Aani Masapirappu 2026 ~ Solar Eclipses and more !!

June 15 is the 166th  day of the year (167th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar; 199 days remain until the end of the year.

Assyria was a major ancient Mesopotamian civilization that existed as a city-state from the 21st century BC to the 14th century BC and eventually expanded into an empire from the 14th century BC to the 7th century BC.  Assyrian history spans from the early Bronze Age to the late Iron Age; modern historians typically divide ancient Assyrian history  based on political events and gradual changes in language.

Assur, the first Assyrian capital, was founded c. 2600 BC, but there is no evidence that the city was independent until the collapse of the Third Dynasty of Ur, in the 21st century BC, when a line of independent kings starting with Puzur-Ashur I began ruling the city. Centered in the Assyrian heartland in northern Mesopotamia, Assyrian power fluctuated over time. The city underwent several periods of foreign rule or domination before Assyria rose in the early 14th century BC as the Middle Assyrian Empire. In the Middle and Neo-Assyrian periods, Assyria was one of the two major Mesopotamian kingdoms, alongside Babylonia.

A total solar eclipse, commonly referred to as the Assyrian eclipse or the Bur-Sagale eclipse, occurred on 15 June 763 BC in the proleptic Julian calendar, recorded in Assyrian eponym lists that most likely dates to the tenth year of the reign of king Ashur-dan III.   A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and Sun, completely or partially blocking the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is larger than that of the Sun, blocking all of the Sun's light and causing day to turn into darkness.

In 1867, Henry Rawlinson identified the near-total eclipse of 15 June 763 BC as the most likely candidate  visible in northern Assyria just before noon. This date has been widely accepted ever since; the identification is also substantiated by other astronomical observations from the same period.  This record is one of the crucial pieces of evidence that anchor the absolute chronology of the ancient Near East for the Assyrian period.  The chronology of the ancient Near East is a framework of dates for various events, rulers and dynasties. Historical inscriptions and texts customarily record events in terms of a succession of officials or rulers: "in the year X of king Y". Comparing many records pieces together a relative chronology relating dates in cities over a wide area.

Our ancestors have had great knowledge, especially in the field of astronomy and have predicted and recorded  eclipses.  The Mahabharata epic contains two major solar eclipse-related events: one used to date the war, and one famous "false sunset" scene during the battle.

The epic mentions an ominous pair of eclipses occurring within 13 days before the Kurukshetra war:    A lunar eclipse on Shukla Trayodashi (instead of Purnima) & a  solar eclipse on Krishna Trayodashi (instead of Amavasya).  This rare eclipse pair is used by researchers to date the Mahabharata war. Analysis of eclipse pairs suggests likely years of  3129 BCE, 2599 BCE, 2056 BCE, and others. The epic states these untimely eclipses would "destroy the masses".  The most famous solar eclipse-related scene occurs on the 13th day of the war as ordained by Bhagwan Sree Krishna enabling  Arjuna's quest to kill Jayadratha

Back to present, the Universe is already gearing up for its next grand performance on August 12, 2026, a breathtaking total solar eclipse will sweep across parts of the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain, bringing the magic of totality to Europe for the first time since 1999.  The 2026 solar eclipse is acting as an incredible, high-stakes teaser for an even rarer, monster 6-minute total solar eclipse arriving just one year later.  The path of totality for this eclipse is exceptionally dynamic measuring roughly 180 miles wide. It begins in northeastern Siberia which tracks directly over icy expanses of Greenland, passing through some clips the western coast of Iceland, and plunges south across the North Atlantic Ocean before making landfall in northern and eastern Spain. The eclipse takes place late in the day for Europe viewers in Spain will experience a dramatic sunset totality  where the eclipsed Sun sits very low on the western horizon right before dipping below the earth.

Chitra Pournami 2026 purappadu

Today 1.5.2o26  is Chitra Pournami -  :   Sun is in Aries (exalted) and the Moon is in the Chitra star in Libra, creating an energy of abundance and spiritual awakening.   Chitra, known as "the bright" or "the shining jewel," is ruled by Mars, bringing a focused, creative, and sometimes transformative energy to the Moon’s presence in Libra.

Because the Moon (representing the mind) is in Libra (the sign of the scales/balance) while receiving the intense light of the exalted Sun (representing the soul), this day is considered the most auspicious time to "audit" one’s own life, seek forgiveness for sins, and balance one's karmic ledger.

Aippasi Pournami 2025

Moon has enamoured mankind since centuries !  - Wednesday, Nov 5, 2025  was  Pournami, full moon. ‘ Super full moon’ , the biggest and brightest of the year,  as the Moon  came  closest to the Earth in its orbit. Its attraction is therefore tenfold, and with it, our feelings and sensations.

The brightest and largest object in our night sky, the Moon makes Earth a more livable planet by moderating our home planet's wobble on its axis, leading to a relatively stable climate. It also causes tides, creating a rhythm that has guided humans for thousands of years. The Moon was likely formed after a Mars-sized body collided with Earth. At Triplicane (perhaps in most parts of Chennai) it was disappointing as the sky was too cloudy and in the initial stages – Moon itself was not visible.  When seen, it was not as bright with rain clouds hovering over it.

Aippaisi Revathi - Super full Moon 2025

Today is Aippaisi Revathi – at Thiruvallikkeni Sri Ranganathar had siriya mada veethi purappadu – though dark clouds loomed – there was no rain !!

Tomorrow, Nov  5, the Super full moon, the biggest and brightest of the year, will come closest to the Earth in its orbit. Its attraction is therefore tenfold, and with it, our feelings and sensations.  The path the Moon takes as it orbits our planet is not quite a perfect circle. Sometimes the Moon is a little closer to Earth, and appears slightly larger, than average. Sometimes it's a little farther away, and appears slightly smaller.

A “supermoon” occurs when a full Moon coincides with the Moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a point known as perigee. During every 27-day orbit around Earth, the Moon reaches both its perigee, about 226,000 miles (363,300 km) from Earth, and its farthest point, or apogee, about 251,000 miles (405,500 km) from Earth.

For centuries, people have believed that full moons disturb sleep — Science now shows they might be right, though your smartphone is still the bigger culprit.  A 2013 study found participants slept 20 minutes less and had lower deep-sleep activity during full moons, even though they didn’t know what was being tested.  Researchers also noted reduced melatonin — the hormone that signals it’s time to rest — suggesting that moonlight may subtly delay sleep.

Harvest Moon & Super Moon - Purattasi Pournami 2025 -

Today  6-10-2025   is Purattasi Pournami .. .. Sri Parthasarathi Perumal had siriya  mada veethi purappadu.  Pournami, full moon is extremely attractive !

Our celestial satellite (moon) is  approximately 248,548 miles (400,000km) from Earth. The Moon orbits Earth in a sightly elliptical orbit, which means our satellite consequently always has a point during its 27.3 day orbit when it is at its distant point from Earth.

Billions of years ago, the Moon was a molten world. As it solidified, the heaviest materials (metals like iron) sank down into the Moon’s centre, and the lighter materials (lower density rocks) rose towards the surface. The result is a structure a bit like a chocolate-dipped cherry – solid core, mostly solid/partly liquid mantle, and thin outer crust.

Lunar impact craters are the depressions left behind after an asteroid, meteoroid, or comet collides with the Moon. Though craters are visible on worlds throughout the solar system, lunar craters are special because we can see them close-up, and the relative lack of erosion and other surface processes on the Moon keep them well-preserved. Moon craters fascinate us because they are a record of the process that built and shaped our entire solar system, the fingerprints of history pressed into the lunar surface.

Solar systems form through collision. Tiny flecks of dust strike and stick to one another, gradually transforming through accumulation into pebbles, boulders, and planetoids, and then finally into planets. The bits and pieces left behind by this process are still here as the rocky and icy objects that populate areas in our solar system like the asteroid belt, Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud. Collisions continue even today, with solar system bodies periodically pummeled by these leftovers. The meteoroids, asteroids and comets left swirling about the Sun are occasionally drawn into a gravitational embrace with their bigger siblings. On Earth, erosion and plate tectonics slowly erase their imprints. But when we look at the sky, the Moon’s craters are visual proof of the messy process that led to our planet’s creation.

October’s Full Moon is traditionally called the Hunter’s Moon. But this October’s Full Moon also has two other names: It is both a Super Moon and the 2025 Harvest Moon.

The first supermoon of 2025, also known as the Harvest Moon, was visible on the evening of October 6 and the early hours of October 7. Rising shortly after sunset, it offered skywatchers a striking view, especially when observed from dark areas away from city lights. In India, the supermoon was  visible across most regions on the evening of October 6 and into the early hours of October 7, depending on local weather and cloud cover.

A Supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the Moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as perigee. As a result, the Moon appears slightly larger and up to 30% brighter than a typical full moon. Although the size difference is subtle to the naked eye, it is often enhanced by the “moon illusion,” especially when the Moon is low on the horizon. The event can also cause slightly higher tides due to the increased gravitational pull.

IN Western Countries, this month’s Full Moon is also the Harvest Moon, the name given to the Full Moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox (which was September 22). Often, the September Full Moon is the Harvest Moon, but this year September’s Full Moon was on the 7th, 15 days before the equinox. October’s Full Moon is 14 days after the equinox, which means it takes the Harvest Moon title this year.

Moon phases reveal the passage of time in the night sky. Some nights when we look up at the moon, it is full and bright; sometimes it is just a sliver of silvery light. These changes in appearance are the phases of the moon. As the moon orbits Earth, it cycles through eight distinct phases. This October supermoon marks the first in a rare sequence of three consecutive supermoons in 2025, offering a unique opportunity for skywatchers and photographers to enjoy one of the year’s most visually striking lunar events.

To us – these would not rank among the most important things in life. We are  more concerned  about our Emperuman and ways to serve and reach Him.  Today, Sri Parthasarathi shone in resplendent splendour ~ and it was great darshan to behold.

The forces of nature as observed and seen – the sky, fire, Oceans, mountains, the hot Sun, cool Moon, rain bearing clouds, eight directions, the Universe, the open that surrounds the galaxies  - all are manifestations of Lord Sriman Narayana.

Lesser mortals like us need not worry  about the future uncertainties, bad things and  sins of life – ThirumazhisaiAzhwar shows us the path of having in our hearts – that beautiful Lord Krishna reclining on the riverside of the holy Cauvery,  will protect us all the time.  Here are some photos of Emperuman  Sri Parthasarathi  pournami purappadu at  Thiruvallikkeni.
