new Thura pathakkam samarpanai ~ Thiruvallikkeni

Jewels  are attractive – the ones that readily come to mind are the ones made of Gold, Silver, embedded with Diamond, gemstone and the like. India's jewellery space has had a monumental year with h the Ambani wedding serving some of the biggest baubles the world has seen.  We often hear of ‘Jewellery and Ornaments’ – often used interchangeably.

An ornament is a decorative item used to enhance the appearance of an object, space, or individual. It can be made from various materials and serves primarily an aesthetic purpose.  Jewellery specifically refers to decorative items worn on the body, typically made from precious metals and gemstones.   Here is something on Jewels.

Rolled gold is a hybrid material, consisting of a thin layer of gold that's mechanically bonded or heat-fused to one or both sides of a base metal (often brass or copper), then rolled out into sheets to create jewelry.  This type of layered gold was patented in England in 1817 and it became a prime source for semi-precious and better-quality costume jewelry in the Victorian era.

Pyrite (also known as fool's gold) is a shiny, metallic mineral that is a form of iron. Marcasite stones come from pyrite.  Peweter is an metal alloy that is composed mostly of tin combined with lead, antimony, bismuth, copper, and/or silver.  When pewter is polished it has a silvery luster. Most pewter is over 90 percent tin.  Ever heard of  Padparadscha sapphires  !  a rare pink-orange variety of corundum or the synthetic equivalent. These gems are mined in Sri Lanka and are usually heat treated to improve and intensify the color.

Pleochroism is the property of having more than two colors, especially when viewed from different angles. In pleochroic minerals, a single stone will show many colors (in the case of Iolite, violet-blue, light blue, and yellow-gray will be visible).  Peking (Beijing) glass was first made in China in the late 1600's, during the Quing Dynasty, when a German priest introduced glass-making techniques to the Imperial court. Early Peking glass was made to imitate porcelain, later,  an overlay technique was developed in which two (or more) layers of glass are fused together, and then the upper layer(s) are partially carved away, creating a multi-colored bas relief

Stop !  - no article on Jewel types … but on the Thura pathakkam worn by Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman during today’s purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni.

This exquisite masterpiece embedded with lab grown diamonds costing Rs.15 lakhs+ was today dedicated to Emperuman by  Thiruvallikkeni  Adhyapakar Sri Thirumalai Ananthanpillai  Bakthisaran.  TA Bakthisaran recently retired from United India Insurance Co after close to 4 decades of service and has been an Adhyapakar for close to 5 years now.  Above is close up of Sri Parthasarathi on Deepavali purappadu yesterday and below are the ones  taken today with ‘thura pathakkam’ prominently visible.

Appreciate your dedication and kainkaryam “Bakthi”

Cleaning Thiruvallikkeni veethigal - Deepavali 2024

At Triplicane, Deepavali purappadu of Acharyan Manavala Mamunigal & Sri Parthasarathi Perumal is a grand affair, to be seen to be believed.

Scores of 10000 walahs and fireworks light the sky ! – there would be empty shells, not fully lighted ones, the ones suddenly burst besides the intense heat on the floor, making it difficult for Sripadhamthangigal, arulicheyal goshti, Battargal and other kainkaryabarar to walk ..  hence some of us clean, immediately enabling smooth purappadu.

Thanks to Shyam Balakrishnan for this nice video

Years roll by ! - Kainkaryabarargal only continue their kainkaryam !!

Triplicane is a wonderland ! – a divine place – and for many life revolves around Sri Parthasarathi swami thirukkovil !!  you may even skip all the contents below and jump to the final para – for that is the essence of this pic post.  Youth and kainkaryam at Thiruvallikkeni.  .. ..  what do modern  youth generally do ?

When writing a work of fiction, most authors take the reader out of the present story jumping to  an earlier time period in a character’s life. This narrative tool is called a flashback, a technique extensively used in films and serials.

Citizen Kane   directed by, produced by, and starring Orson Welles hit the screens in 1941. Welles and Herman J. Mankiewicz wrote the screenplay. The picture was Welles's first feature film.  It is often cited as   the greatest film ever made.  For 40 years (5 decennial polls: 1962, 1972, 1982, 1992, 2002), it stood at number 1 in the British Film Institute's Sight & Sound decennial poll of critics,  and it topped the American Film Institute's 100 Years ... 100 Movies list in 1998, as well as its 2007 update. The film was nominated for Academy Awards in nine categories and it won for Best Writing (Original Screenplay) by Mankiewicz and Welles

Analepsis is a literary device in narrative, in which a past event is narrated at a point later than its chronological place in a story. A form of anachrony by which some of the events of a story are related at a point in the narrative after later story‐events have already been recounted. Commonly referred to as retrospection or flashback, analepsis enables a storyteller to fill in background information about characters and events. A narrative that begins in medias res will include an analeptic account of events preceding the point at which the tale began.

A flashback is an interjected scene that takes the narrative back in time from the current point in the story.   In film, flashbacks depict the subjective experience of a character by showing a memory of a previous event and they are often used to "resolve an enigma".  Some of the camera techniques include – deliberately blurring the edges of the pic, jarred or choppy photos   or unusual coloration or sepia tone, or monochrome when most of the story is in full color, is used. The scene may fade or dissolve, often with the camera focused on the face of the character and there is typically a voice-over by a narrator too.

One of the most famous examples of a flashback is in the Orson Welles' film Citizen Kane (1941). The protagonist, Charles Foster Kane, dies at the beginning, uttering the word Rosebud. The remainder of the film is framed by a reporter's interviewing Kane's friends and associates, in a futile effort to discover what the word meant to Kane. As the interviews proceed, pieces of Kane's life unfold in flashback, but Welles' use of such unconventional flashbacks  !!!

A narrative work beginning in medias res ( lit. "into the middle of things") opens in the chronological middle of the plot, rather than at the beginning.   Shakespeare’s Hamlet begins after the death of Hamlet's father which is later discovered to have been a murder. Works that employ in medias res often later use flashback and nonlinear narrative for exposition to fill in the backstory.

The film begins ‘in medias res’, with a masked person being brought to the Central Jail in Chennai, India. When asked by a fellow-inmate for the reasons behind his imprisonment, the masked person replies that he is imprisoned for attempting to do good for the people. The masked person is revealed to be Sivaji  - with the story unwinding to a flashback of a software architect returning back to native land thinking of doing good to his land but ends up beaten by the system and corrupt people. The whole film talks about black money and its harmful effect – that was Rajnikant starrer – Sivaji- the boss.

Not any filmy post but post on Srivaishnava youths involved in kainkaryam unto HIM.  In the mystic holy land of Thiruvalikkeni -   for many life revolves around Sri Parthasarathi swami thirukkovil !!  3 photos here depict kids with Kutti Perumal and another some youngsters on the occasion of Sri Azhagiya Singar thiruther – all in 2016.  8 years have passed by, lots of things have happened. [these are random photos and not representative of all those kainkaryabarargal]

The good news is almost all these people seen in the photos are still active continuing their Sripadham and other kainkaryam to Emperuman Sri Parthasarathi.  Yes graduating from Kutti Perumal to the real Emperuman, Sripadham kainkaryam with flair in shouldering big heavy vahanams.  The real flavour in life for these youngsters and many hundreds more is doing kainkaryam to Emperuman.

Poliga, poliga, poliga, these youngsters and the rich Srivaishnava tradition.

Shatamana Uthsa Celebrations - Shri AM Rajagopalan Swami - Aanmeega Amutham

Most likely you would have read about Enrico Fermi, an Italian and naturalized American physicist, renowned for being the creator of the world's first nuclear reactor, the Chicago Pile-1, and a member of the Manhattan Project.

Thiruvallikkeni aka Triplicane is a famed land… The land of Emperuman Sri Parthasarathi, is the place where religion, nationalistic fervour, patriotism, sports, education and the individual dignity have interspersed for the benefit of the State and the larger interests of the Nation.  Triplicane houses some best historic educational institutions driving home the point of scholastic excellence for decades.

Triplicane was the seat of freedom struggle – Balagandhara Thilakar and very many patriotic leaders had delivered powerful lectures in Triplicane (Thilakar thidal at Marina beach)  and inspired people in the freedom struggle. Mahakavi Subrahmanya Bharathi lived in Triplicane and from this place freedom struggle germinated.

There have been some jewels of Triplicane and today we had the honour of receiving the blessings of a legend who had seen Indian Freedom and has participated in many important movements.  Today Aadi 27 (Aug 12) Vishakam nakshathiram is of significance for today is ‘Sathaptha poorthi mahothsavam’ of a jewel of the land.

One hundred (100) is significant in many ways.   In mathematics,   100 is the square of 10.  100 is the basis of percentages (per centum meaning "by the hundred" in Latin), with 100% being a full amount.   In our Sampradhayam, we celebrate completion of 60 as Sashtiabdapoorthi, 80 as Sadabhishekam, 90 Navathi mahothsavam and 100 Sathabdha poorthi mahothsavam.  Satham implies 100; abda– year; poorthi-culmination.

Today at Vidya Barathi kalyana mantap Mylapore’ completion of 100 years of AMR Swami was grandly celebrated by his sons, daughter, and grand children.  Many famous people thronged to venue and received the blessings of Centurian Sriman U. Ve. Aanmeega Amutham, Jothisha Chakravarthi  -  Aranapakkam Mudumbai Rajagopalan Swami and his wife Smt. Padmasani Rajagopalan.

AMR is very popular among religious people and this towering personality lived in Triplicane for many decades.  In my childhood have visited their home in Peyalwar koil street and years later, they owned the corner house in North Tank Sq / Venkatrangam Street junction.

For a few decades, he was   founder- editor of Kumudam Jothidam having begun  his writing career in The Hindu . AMR  has a degree in Politics and Indian History,  has travelled far and wide, nook and corners specifically  to ancient monuments and temples, gathering plethora of information about them. After a 22-year-stint in The Hindu , he joined Indian Express , writing in both the Express and Dinamani.   In Dinamani , he took care  - his Q&A in Dinamani Vellimani made the magazine itself popular.  His astrological predictions made him a much sought-after astrologer.  His way of life as also the parikarams he suggested were  simple and only embedded with worshipping Temples and doing some service therein.

He wrote about many temples that were in ruin, in poor shape and with his articles raised awareness – funds would flow from devotees and soon such temples were renovated.  After becoming very popular and much sought after astrologer too, he lives a very simple life and till his health allowed, Shri  AMR offered free astrological consultations,  and directed his  clients to donate liberally to temple repairs and maintenance.    Our Visishtadvaita samprathaya  stresses the importance of archai worship, which makes the upkeep of temples important, and AMR’s relentless work in repairing temples is his major contribution.

A well educated and strong follower of Sanathana Dharma, AMR is an extremely kind and pleasing personality.  His sons, daughter, are all well educated, occupied important positions in office and now the traditions continues with his  grandsons,  daughters doing well.

Today we were really fortunate to receive the blessings of Shri AMR swami and Smt Padmasani Rajagopalan on his Shathamana Uthsavam.  The spontaneous gathering of people expressing their regards for AMR swami and flowing maryathais from various temple were all expression of the way he has lived his life and impacted people.

He is indeed another ‘Jewel of Triplicane’ we pray our Emperuman to shower on him and his family continued good health, and prosperity.

Fermium is a synthetic chemical element; it has symbol Fm and atomic number 100. It is an actinide and the heaviest element that can be formed by neutron bombardment of lighter elements. It was discovered in the debris of the first hydrogen bomb explosion in 1952, and named after Enrico Fermi, one of the pioneers of nuclear physics.

With great regards to AMR Swami

kainkaryam - regulating traffic at Thiruvallikkeni

Life in a divyadesam is always exhilarating – you get to mingle with so many persons who are well educated, well mannered, whose life is entwined in kainkaryam (service)  to Emperuman Sriman Narayana.

Here at this divine place, there are  purappadus on special Uthsava kalams and on pancha parvams too.  There are Battacharyars whose exceptional dedication ensures that Emperuman comes out adorning the choicest of flowers, ornaments, dress and more.  There is the  Veda adhyapaka goshti – hundreds of them chant Nalayira divyaprabandham in front of Emperuman on the streets and  chanting Vedam  after the Perumal.   Of the many kainkaryams, Sripadham thangis are  physically associated too and can be very demanding.

Brahmothsavams are extremely engaging for purappadus take long hours – night purappadu could extend to midnight and next day morning starts too early – well, those in service do not think of sleep but think only of kainkaryam (service).

Besides the ones mentioned there are : nadaswaram thavil and other mangala vadhyams,  kainkaryam to bagavathas and those involved in service to Emperuman,  financial kainkaryam for specified projects, offering beautiful jewels, vasthrams,  doing service, providing floral garlands, providing fruits and offerings, cleaning, regulating, painting, and so many more avenues ~ some are physical and requires extraordinary commitment .. ..

The streets of Triplicane are congested and traffic overflows all the time – there are so many hindrances in the form of parked vehicles, mad two-wheeler drivers, cattle,  stray dogs and more – people slowing are losing patience and have little time – rushing all the time.  In the melee, Perumal purappadu takes place.  All of us associated with Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam and regular to Sri Parthasarathi Thirukkovil – for sure would have seen him, and perhaps would have talked to him too.    In fact he is a man of very few words – wears a nice smile on his face and does dedicated kainkaryam.

Mr Chokkalingam Ramana fondly Meesai to people actively regulates traffic,     carefully steers  the stray cattle away without harming them during purappadu.   People like Theevatti Senthilkumar, Pavan Krishnaiah, Chockalingam Ramana are rare – they do kainkaryam without seeking any attention – many may not have time and thought to notice kainkaryabarargal like him, leave alone appreciating such good acts.

With regards – S Sampathkumar

Sri Azhagiya Singar Theppothsavam 2024 : அரி பொங்கிக் காட்டும் அழகு

Sri Azhagiya Singar Theppothsavam 2024

At Thiruvallikkeni after 3 days of theppam for Sri Parthasarathi, today 13th Mar 2024 is theppothsavam for Sri Thelliya Singar.

Morality ~ the dictionary definition is  : "principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad", which sounds relatively straight forward. The notion of what morality constitutes however may not be as simple. Away from the Compass that shows where North pole is – there is this usage ‘moral compass’ !.   the ethical poles seem to jump around dependent on where people are, who they are, what they are doing and why they are doing what they are doing. The Poles don't seem to be in the opposite end of straight axes either.

Moral compass could mean  : a natural feeling that makes people know what is right and wrong and how they should behave.  For us staunch believers there are so many parables and instances of what constitutes right and what should be done. Simply follow the way our Acharyas lived and preached .. ..  in life it is devotion to Sriman Narayana that would steer away from all worries.  The greatest example is the legend of Prahalada.  Prahlad was born to demon   king Hiranyakashipu and his wife Kayadu. When he was  in his mother’s womb, he started hearing the greatness of Sriman Narayana through Sage Narada.  Hiranyakashipu was a tyrant who had been granted a boon that made him invincible.   He relished the fact that none could kill him. He detested other’s spiritual inclination and hence forced his subjects to chant his name. Even under such dire circumstances, Prahalada’s bakthi and devotion were unparalleled. He was attached to the lotus feet of Sriman Narayana and no attempts of threat would dissuade him.  The tyrant father  tried to poison his son, get him trampled by elephants and made various attempts to eliminate him.  .. .. .. and when Prahlada wanted – Lord presented Himself as NaRasimha at the right instant and slayed the demon king.

Sri Azhagiya Singar was exceptionally attractive – oozing beauty.  Is He not the Lord whose anger ensured that in protection of His baktha Prahalada, the powerful Hiranya was shredded by the finger nails; in His anger, His red eyes shone like hot embers, fire came through his gaping mouth, He resembled a ferocious mighty lion. What a beautiful form it was! – at Thiruvallikkeni,  He is the most beautiful Azhagiya Singar – He is always beautiful and pleasant – for His anger is only directed at those enemies of His devotees.

Here are some photos of Sri Azhagiya Singar theppothsava purappadu  at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam.

Lord  Rama, the foremost Maryadha Purush among men, accompanied by sounds of conches buzzing in the ears and sounds of kettle-drums, proceeded to the city of Ayodhya, having a series of palaces.

It was all over after the  maha Yudha, Ravana was conquered, all asuras were destroyed .. .. Sree Ramapiran returned back to the kingdom of Ayodhya acceding to the request Bharata  .. .. the greatest Warrior returned to the kingdom, got ceremonial bath and was adorned for the grand occasion.   Sree  Rama, mounting on an excellent chariot, sallies forth on a procession in the city accompanied by Bharata, Shatrughna, Lakshmana and Vibhishana. Nine thousand elephants followed the procession, with Sugreeva and other vanaras mounted on them. Hundreds of attendants  and musicians with their musical instruments walked in front of Rama's procession. The citizens of Ayodhya hosted  flags on every house.  As instructed by  Sugreeva four of his vanaras brought  water from four oceans in jars given to them. Some of them  brought water from five hundred rivers, for the ceremony. Vasishta along with   priests caused Rama to be consecrated with that water.   Vasishta   officiating the coronation-ceremony adorned Rama with an auspicious and charming crown.   Rama presented a pearl-necklace to Seetha and Seetha presented that necklace in turn to Hanuma. Rama further gave  presents to Vibhishana, Sugreeva, Jambavan and others on the occasion.

Sree Rama at Thiruvelukkai divyadesam

Tomorrow is the historic moment whence the idol of Sree Rama will be installed in the new temple coming up at His Janmasthan.  Reports suggest that the old idol of Lord Ram will be placed in front of the new idol which will be consecrated.

The  Ram temple in Ayodhya boasts an expansive area, covering a total of 2.7 acres. The built-up area of the temple is an impressive 57,400 square feet, reflecting the grandeur and scale of the architectural endeavour.  The temple's physical dimensions are noteworthy, with a total length of 360 feet and a width of 235 feet. The height of the temple, inclusive of its peak, reaches 161 feet. This sizeable structure is spread over three floors, with each floor having a height of 20 feet.

The Pran Pratishtha of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya is poised to take place tomorrow. This sacred ceremony, marking the consecration of the deity within the temple, promises to be a historic event that carries profound cultural and symbolic importance. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji  will preside over the Pran Pratishtha ceremony which will be officiated by a team of priests led by Lakshmikant Dixit. Several states have announced a public holiday or half-working on Monday to allow people celebrate the occasion.

For the Pran Pratishtha ceremony at Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22, the temple Trust has sent out invites to representatives of more than 50 countries. One of them is Kim Chil-su from South Korea. He belongs to the Queen Heo dynasty. Queen Heo, also known as Suriratna, was the princess of Ayodhya, who, according to popular legend, travelled to Korea and started the Karak dynasty in that country. For the past several years, the India-Korea connection of Ayodhya has been in the news.  In 2018, draped in an elegant saree, South Korean First Lady Kim Jung-sook soaked in Diwali festivities in Ayodhya much to the delight of the people of this pilgrim town. From the moment she arrived in Ayodhya on Tuesday till she departed, local people, especially the youth, applauded and cheered her at the multiple events she attended, along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Princes Heo Hwang-ok, or Queen Hu, also popularly known as Suriratna which is supposed to be her Indian name, is at the centre of a legend that goes back nearly 2,000 years. She is believed to be a princess from Ayodhya who became the much-loved Queen Hu of Korea. There is a widespread belief in South Korea, and for the past few decades in India too, that in 48 AD, Princess Suriratna of Ayodhya travelled for three months to marry King Suro, who founded the Karak dynasty in 42 AD. The capital of his kingdom was Gimhae City. Today, millions of people in South Korea trace their origin to the Karak clan.

This new temple is in Nagara style of architecture.  The Nagara style of temple architecture emerged some time in the fifth century CE, during the late Gupta period, in northern India. It is seen in juxtaposition with the Dravida style of southern India, which too emerged in the same period.  Nagara temples are built on a raised plinth, with the garbha griha (sanctum sanctorum) — where the idol of the deity rests — the most sacred part of the temple. Towering over the garbha griha is the shikhara (literally ‘mountain peak’), the most distinguishable aspect of Nagara style temples.  As the name suggests, shikharas are human-made representations of the natural and cosmological order.

A typical Nagara style temple also comprises a circumambulatory passage around the garbha griha, and one or more mandapas (halls) on the same axis as it. Elaborate murals and reliefs often adorn its walls.

Tomorrow let us celebrate the reentry of Sree Rama to His Avatharasthalam.  Let us light lamps at homes, offer fragrant flowers, offer sweets to Perumal and distribute them later.  Let us join the grand functions organized for the occasion around our place, watch Pran Prathishta live on TV, if we are not in a position to be physically present in Ayodhya.

Lots of events are planned at Thiruvallikkeni also .. .. Jai Shree Ram.
