Masi Magam celebrations @ Vanga Kadal (Bay of Bengal) 2021

Today (27.2.2021) is a great day ~ Masi Magam – a day on which the Ocean (Bay of Bengal) becomes much happier – for Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman visits bay of Bengal at Marina beach.   .. ..  could not forget remembering the past – last year Masi magam purappadu for Sri Parthasarathi occurred on  [9.3.2020]; then there was Gajendra varadhar thavanothsavam, Sri Azhagiya Singar thavanothsavam (3 days)  ending on    15.3.2020      then Corona struck .. for months together there was to be no purappadu  !.

I am posting in detail about Garuda vahana purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi Perumal and His sojourn to Bay of Bengal – this post is slightly different – more on the thousands of people who gathered at the sea for holy bath accompanying Gods from various places and the darshan thousands had at the seashore of the conglomeration of Gods at Bay of Bengal.

Chennai is fortunate to have a big sea and grander sea-shore. Factually, it may not be the second longest sea-shore as many claim it to be. Early morning the famous Marina beach offers intriguing things.   You can hear the sea, the sound of waves  and nearer – the  waves jumping and touching the shore and then submitting themselves to the shore but trying to comeback to conquer again ! would be very interesting sight  – One  can see monstrous  ships anchored in the middle of sea, some fishing boats and Sun coming out as a red ball from the Sea – all great sights to behold.

Geographically, the Bay of Bengal stretches from Sri Lanka up the coast of eastern India; it curves under Bangladesh and Myanmar and then heads south along Thailand and Malaysia until it reaches the northern coast of Sumatra, in Indonesia. It is the largest bay in the world; one-quarter of the world’s population lives in the countries fringing it. .. .. such a long water body .. and you are not reading it as Ocean but a Bay !!  .. ..    a  bay is a recessed, coastal body of water that directly connects to a larger main body of water, such as an ocean, a lake, or another bay.  A large bay is usually called a gulf, sea, sound, or bight.  Bay of  Bengal has existed for many centuries, in many languages, there have been references as Chola Lake, and  named "Golfo de Bengala" by the Portuguese."     .. .. some point of time when life centered only on British History the vast Ocean became Bay of Bengal as   all British maps referred to it as the Bay of Bengal.

Bhasan Char (also known as Char Piya), is an island in Hatiya Upazila, Bangladesh, located in the Bay of Bengal, is now in news.  The island was formed by Himalayan silt in 2006.  It spans 40 square kilometres (15 sq mi; 4,000 ha). The Government of Bangladesh plans to construct a total of 1,440 buildings, including 120 cyclone shelters, to relocate 100,000 Rohingya refugees from the mainland camps of Cox's Bazar  - it is reported that Rohingya refugees will be moved to Bhasan Char by ships and is stated to be voluntary.

For us back home, Marina beach is a great attraction -  the   pristine beautiful sandy shores -  runs from Fort St George to Besant Nagar. This beach   was conceived in 1884 and christened by Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant-Duff, the then governor of Madras – the beautiful beach  is famed for the  ambience and rich eco system.  On the road side, many stone statues, some of them installed during the Tamil World Conference adorn the area and many getting added with passage of time and some by political compulstions.

The vast expanse of Bay of Bengal  has number of large rivers flowing into it - the Ganges-Hooghly, the Padma, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna, the Barak-Surma-Meghna, the Irrawaddy, the Godavari, the Mahanadi, the Brahmani, the Baitarani, the Krishna and the Kaveri.  There are so many seaports - Chennai-Ennore, Chittagong, Colombo, Kolkata-Haldia, Mongla, Paradip, Port Blair, Tuticorin, Visakhapatnam and Yangon,Dhamraand a host of smaller ports including Kakinada.

The morning of 27.2.2021 presented a holy sight of GODs – thousands of devotees;  those seeking divine blessings accompanying the Lord and had come for holy bath in the sea on the auspicious day of ‘masi magam’ ; the sea which was blessed with the Divine intervention was perhaps showing its happiness on seeing the holy crowd with huge tidal waves. Alongside Sri Parthasarathi Perumal were many other Perumals including ~ Srinivasa Perumal  from Egmore on Garuda Vahanam;   Srinivasa Perumal from Periamet; Sri Kamkala Kameswarar, Sri Thiruvatteeswarar, Sri Ellaiamman; Sri Reguna Parameshwari ellai amman; Sri Murugar; Vinayakar and more .. .. ..

Here are some photos of the holy congregation  at Marina – Bay of Bengal near kannagi statue – there were more at other places as well.

Masi Magam 2021` ~ Sthalasayana Perumal Garuda Sevai

Masi Magam 2021` ~ Sthalasayana Perumal  Garuda Sevai

Today (27.2.2021) is a great day ~ Masi Magam – a day on which the Ocean (Bay of Bengal) becomes much happier – for Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman visits bay of Bengal at Marina beach.   .. ..  Masi Magam is very grandly celebrated in many places .. .. and this is another divyadesam situate on Bay of Bengal !

The vast expanse of Bay of Bengal  is the northeastern part of the Indian Ocean, bounded on the west and northwest by India on the north by Bangladesh, and on the east by Myanmar and the Andaman Islands of India and Myanmar and the Nicobar Islands of India.  .. .. there are many ports on the Bay of Bengal.

Of the many kingdoms of Tamil Nadu, Pallavas ruled Thondaimandalam having Kanchipuram as their capital city.    Pallavas fought a series of wars in the northern Vengi region, before Mahendra varma decimated his chief enemies at Pullalur.  Tamil literature flourished under his rule, and he was succeeded by his famous son -  Narasimhavarma I in 630 CE.  Narasimha varma also known as Mamallan (great wrestler) and  during his reign, in 640 AD,  the Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang visited Kanchipuram ~  and he is ever remembered for those great works of art at Mahabalipuram.   The town was originally called Mamallai or Kadalmallai.

Once the hub of trade and commerce in ancient and early medieval India, Mahabalipuram is now a well-known tourist destination, owing to its many heritage structures that fall under the UNESCO Group of Monuments.  It was earlier a thriving sea  port of the Palalvas.  Among the textual references are – Periplus of the Erythraean Sea (1st century CE), a Greek navigation book, that mentions Mamallapuram, calling it a thriving port; while Ptolemy (2nd century CE), refers to Mahabalipuram as Malange.  Hiuen Tsang (7th century CE) in his travel records also talks of Mamallapuram, terming it as a Pallava sea-port.

To us this place is of great significance as Tirumangai Azhwar did mangalasasanam for the Perumal here.   Sri Sthalasayana Perumal Thirukovil is at Thirukkadanmallai ~ in case the name does not ring a bell – it is more famously known as Mahabalipuram (simply Mamallapuram), an architectural marvel.  As the visitors alight for those magnificent sculptures – stands the ancient temple, a divyadesam.     It is at this divyadesam our Boothathazhwar was born.  Thiruvavathara uthsavam of Bootath Alwar gets celebrated in the month of Aippasi (Oct-Nov).

Being Masi Magam –  this morning Sthalasayana Perumal [Sri Ulaguyya Ninraan]  had purappadu on  Garuda Sevai and had theerthavari at the seashore.   There was Chakrathazhvaar theerthavari.  Thousands of people rejoiced the occasion and had holy bath in the ocean.

On this day  – let us fall at the feet of Sri Boothath Azhwar and reach Emperuman by singing His glories and more specifically his prabandham ‘Irandam thiruvanthathi’ part of Iyarpa

Sri Boothathazhwar guides us the easiest way to reach the abode of Sriman Narayana.  He tells us that to have the strong doors of Sri Vaikundam open, one should relinquish other faiths and fall at the feet of that Lord of Thennarangam – Sri Ranganathar.

Here are some photos of the purappadu taken by my brother S. Sundararajan.

Ever been to : Kodungallur (anglicised name: Cranganore), is a municipality in the South Western border of Thrissur district of Kerala, India. Kodungallur is 29 kilometres (18 mi) northwest of Kochi and 38 kilometres (24 mi) southwest of Thrissur, by National Highway 66.

Wednesday, 24th Feb 2021   - was  ‘Punarvasu (punarpoosam) nakshathiram’ in the month of ‘Maasi’ – the Thiruavathara thirunaal of Sri Kulasekhara Azhwaar.   Kulasekarar was the amsam of ‘kausthubam’ – the jewel adorning Sriman Narayana.  He was born at Thiruvanjikulam as son of King Thiruviradhan and ruled the Chera Empire.

This Azhwar’s unique contribution is ‘Perumal Thirumozhi’  ~ that describes his bakthi to Thiruvarangan, his attachment to Arangan, the holy Thirumala and what Azhwar aspires to be there, Thiruvithuvacode, .. .. and canto 7 [ezham thirumozhi] is on lamentation of Devaki who could not enjoy the deeds of Krishna as he grew up.  We have been brought up hearing the beautiful life history of Bhagwan SriKrishna who was born at Mathura to Devaki and Vasudevar inside the prison of Kamsa, and on the same night on that rainy day, was taken across river Yamuna to Gokul where he grew with Yasodha and Nandagopar.

with pranams and thankful gratitude to Sri Srinidhi Akkarakkani Swami..

Kodungallur (anglicised name: Cranganore), is a municipality in the South Western border of Thrissur district of Kerala, India. Kodungallur is 29 kilometres (18 mi) northwest of Kochi and 38 kilometres (24 mi) southwest of Thrissur, by National Highway 66.  The region  was devastated by natural calamities—a flood or an earthquake—in 1341, and consequently lost its commercial importance thereafter. Further, it came under attack on various occasions: in 1504 by the Portuguese-Kochi allied forces during their movement against Calicut in 1524, by the Mappilas during their attack against the Portuguese, and in 1565 again by the Portuguese.  Historically, Kodungallur has been identified as Mahodaya Puram, Mahavanchimana Pattanam, Thrikulasekarapuram, Jangli, Gingaleh, Cyngilin, Shinkali, Chinkli, Jinkali, Shenkala, and Cynkali, which are all derived from the name of the River Changala. We are reading this today for ‘Thirukulasekarapuram’ – is named after our Sri Kulasekara Azhwar, who was born here – it is our own Thiruvanjikalam.
