Sri Parthasarathi Theppam day 3 2017 : ஸ்ரீபார்த்தசாரதி "சிகத்தாடை"

Today 28th Feb 2017  is the third day of Theppothsavam – the first three days are dedicated to Sri Parthasarathi.  This morning Sri Parthasarathi had Thirumanjanam in Theppam itself –  and hence had purappadu in the morning to the Thirukulam of which I am making  a separate post.  In the oncoming days, there would the float festival, a day each for Sri Azhagiyasingar, Sri Ranganathar, Sree Ramar and Sri Varadhar.

To those who worship Him daily too – He looks refreshingly fresh and different everyday.  Today, the added attraction was the kireedam (crown)  called ‘Sigathadai’.  On the Crown, reams of jasmine flower are tightly rolled and it is closed with ‘pure white silk’.  It was a great darshan to behold for the eyes of Bakthas.

Thiruvallikkeni Sri Parthasarathi Theppothsavam (2) 2017

Thiruvallikkeni Sri Parthasarathi Theppothsavam (2) 2017

'விடு, நனி கடிது' என்றான்; மெய் உயிர் அனையானும்,
முடுகினன், நெடு நாவாய்; முரி திரை நெடு நீர்வாய்;

Back at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam ~ those attached to Sri Parthasarathi were treated to a stunning darshan on the occasion of day 2 of Theppothsavam.  Only those who witnessed can feel that ! எம்பெருமானுக்குப் பல்லாயிரத் திருநாமங்களுண்டு…… there are thousands of names for  Emperuman – the ordinary mortal has nothing else to do than know the wisdom that we must chant His many other names, worship in many shrines, which itself will secure us a place by His side alongside those noble souls in heaven, says Boothath alwar whose Irandam Thiruvanthathi was recited in goshti today

Here are some photos today’s purappadu [day 2 – 27th Feb 2017]. It is only day of Theppothsavam – chinna maada veethi purappadu.

Thiruvallikkeni Theppothsavam 2017 :

A ship or a boat is a contraption  that can float and move on the ocean, a river, or any waterbody, either through its own power or using power from the elements (wind, waves, or Sun). Plain steel would sink in water immediately, as would a wrecked steel ship !

The reason that a ship floats is that it displaces a lot of water. The displaced water keeps pushing  the ship upwards – this force is called the buoyancy force. The more water that is displaced, the stronger the buoyancy force is which pushes the object up. Any object dipped  into water experiences two forces: the gravity force which pulls it down due to its weight, and the buoyancy force which pushes it up. If these forces are equal, then the object floats. This is about the divine float – the Theppam for Lord Sriman Narayana

In the divyadesam of Thiruvallikkeni, the tamil month of Masi has special significance.  On the Full moon [Pournami day and Magam Nakshathiram] Sri Parthasarathi Swami visits the shores of Marina, famously known as Masi Magam.   Perhaps this is the time that signifies the onset of summer and it is time for cooling the Lord.  On Masi New moon [Amavasyai] starts the float festival at Thiruvallikkeni.   The tank of Sri Parthasarathi Swami is famous ~ it is  ‘Kairavini Pushkarini’… the pond of Lily – ‘allikkeni’ from which the place itself derives its name (~ and my blog is titledKairavini Karaiyinile literally meaning on the banks of holy Kairavini, the temple  tank).  The tank has added significance attributed to the birth of “Yathi Rajar” – Swami Ramanujar due to the penance undertaken by Kesava Somayaji and Kanthimathi ammal. Pushkarinis were developed closely associated with temples. The water from the tank was once used daily for thirumanjanam and all other religious functions of the Lord. The conclusion of Brahmotsavam would be by ‘thirthavaari’ the sacred bath at the tank.

Every year there is the ‘theppam’ – the float festival. A floating structure gets spruced up, made of drums, timber and ornated beautifully. Perumal comes  to the temple tank in purappadu and is placed majestically inside the float. The beautifully lit theppam is dragged around in water. Devotees in hundreds converge, sit everywhere on the steps of the temple tank to have darshan of the Lord on theppam. In olden days, the shops springing up for the occasion were of added attraction.

The annual float festival of the Sri Parthasarathy Swamy temple starts every year on Maasi Ammavasai day and is a 7 day affair.  In my young days, the tank was much bigger and would brim with water – so the size of the float also used to be much bigger. Now a days,  the float  is much smaller in size, the grandeur of the festival has only increased though.

This year the Theppa Utsavam began today on 26th Feb 2017  and here are some photos taken during the Theppam.

Thirukachi Nambigal Avathara Sthalam at Poonamallee

Today evening was seeing photos on Facebook – Mr Rajagopalan Madhavan had posted some good photos of Acharyar Thirukachi Nambigal Uthsavam – a couple of photos attracted me … for I had read about that particular place in a blog post.

The post referred is Sujatha Desikan’s post on Acharyar Thirukachi Nambigal written way back in 2010.  Upon searching for Acharyar Avatharasthalam, with none providing details [locals too were not aware !!] – he found it near a Vinayagar temple, occupied by somebody and had lamented that only God can save and restore the place.  The photos by Madhavan show Acharyar visiting the same Avatharasthalam this year.  For sure, this is made possible by great efforts by some group of people.  It does makes the believers, followers of Srivaishnava Acharyargal happy.  [that portion of Desikan’s search reproduced alongwith photos of Mr R Madhavan]

Masi Thiruvonam 2017 purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni

Today  24th Feb 2017 is  Masi Thiruvonam.  On every Thiruvonam day, at Thiruvallikkeni there will chinna mada veethi purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi.  Here are some photos taken during today’s purappadu.

Poigaialwar shows the easy way of reaching the Lotus feet of Sriman Naryaana by advising us :

0 Heart, don’t ever have any confusion ! – Sriman Narayana killed the pride-ridden Hiranya, for the sake of devout Prahalada.  Think of that Lord who took form of Narasimha to get rid of the enemy of Baktha Prahlada; chant thy name always – and there is no other easier recipe for reaching the most benevolent Lord Sriman Narayana.

After the purappadu,  Sri Poigai Azhwar, Sri  Pillai Logachar and Sri Vedanthachar were seated near Sri Parthasarathi and there was goshti of ‘Muthal thiruvanthathi’ given to us by Poigaippiran.

Thiruvanbil Sri Sundararaja Perumal Thirukovil

Thiruvanbil Sri Sundararaja Perumal Thirukovil

Kaliyan says of the Lord reclining on the serpent (Adisesha) in Thirukudanthai,  Thiruvekka, Thiru Evvul (Thiruvallur); the holy Thiruvarangam, Thiruppernagar (koviladi aka Appakudathan); Thiru Anbil and Thirupparkadal ~ Sriman Narayana happily reclines on Adisesha in the eternal Ocean of Milk ~ the timeless, limitless, eternally bountiful Lord is reclining only to easily get into the heart of His devotees.   – at ThiruVanbil, He gives darshan as the most beautiful Sundara Rajar (Vadivu Azhagiya Nambi).

From Srirangam divyadesam, one travels around 45 minutes in Lalgudi route to reach Anbil divyadesam.  One can also reach through Kallanai, proceed on route Thirukattupalli – reach Thiruppernagar, have darshan at divyadesam, cross Kollidam river (now there is a new broad bridge) and reach Anbil.

Anbil is a village near Lalgudi, located on the banks of the Kollidam river, in Tiruchirappalli district. Anbil has had its share in the politics of Tamil Nadu and has temples (besides the divyadesam) of  Mariamman and Sathyavageeswarar. Anbil is considered as three separate villages by the Government of India as of the 2011 Census, namely Jangamarajapuram, Mangammalpuram and Keelanbil.

The beautiful Srivaishnava shrine, in its present form appears a small one – understand that it earlier had many rounds of fortification and had so much of landed property, which like many other temples are not yielding the revenue.  The temple is believed to have been built by the Medieval Cholas of the late 8th century AD, with later contributions from Vijayanagar kings and Madurai Nayaks. The copper plate inscriptions from Anbil indicate generous contribution by the Chola kings to the temple. The rajagopuram, the temple's gateway tower, is east facing and has a 3-tier structure.

Later day  King Sundara chola was a devotee and upon his war victories,  donated immense wealth to this temple. His prime minister Anirudha Brahmarayar is believed to be from Anbil.   The temple is located on the Northern bank of the river Kollidam, at a distance of 25 km (16 mi) from Trichy.

The presiding deity as sung by Thirumazhisai Alwar is in reclining posture on Adisesha.  Inside the sanctum sanctorum, His consort  Sridevi and Bhoomadevi are doing service at His thiruvadi while  Brahma is present from his Thirunabi.  The Uthsavar is the Smiling beautiful Ruparajar – Vaidvu Azhagiya Nambi – Sundara Raja perumal.  Besides the ubayanachimar, there is Andal in seated posture.  Thayar is Sundaravalli thayar in a separate sannathi.

Legend has it that Sage Durvasa once came to meet Mandaka Rishi but had to wait long as the latter was in deep meditation, under the river. Durvasa, who is known for his instant anger, cursed Mandaka Rishi turning him into a frog.  Mandaga’s curse was cured by Sri Sundararajar and this place is also known as Mandaka(Frog) Puri.

At every divyadesam, the antiquity, sampradhayam and rituals are taken care by the few exceptionally devoted people who live and do kainkaryam to Lord without thinking of any recompense.  Here it is Anbil Aravamudha battar who does great kainkaryam and it is the duty of all Srivaishnavaites to support people like him and ensure that our tradition is preserved.  Understand that for lack of revenue, annual Brahmothsavam has stopped for years and the battar is striving hard to make that happen.

Here are some photos of the divyadesam.
