the mystic land of Sita Mata - Janakpur beckoning !!

The  Kingdom of the Videhas (also known as Mithila) was an ancient kingdom in Vedic India which rose to prominence under King Janaka.  The ancient kingdom's territory is presently located in Mithila region of Northern and eastern Bihar of India and the eastern Terai of Nepal.  The present day Mithila is a geographical and cultural region located in the Indian state of Bihar. This region is bounded by the Mahananda River in the east, the Ganges in the south, the Gandaki River in the west and by the foothills of the Himalayas in the north. The native language in Mithila is Maithili, and its speakers are referred to as Maithils.

There was a king by name Nimi,  who was a supreme Dharmātma,  strongest among the strong,  and who became popular in all the three worlds  by his own deeds and efforts.   It is to this Nimi King, Janaka's lineage is traced back. His son was Mithi, who built the city of Mithilā.  He was known to be the first among Janakas.  From Janaka was born Udāvasu;  Nandivardhana; Sukētu: Dēvarāta; Bhadratha .. .. .. and as generations passed by came : Svararōma, Hrasvarōma  & Janaka

The name Mithila is commonly used to refer to the Videha Kingdom, as well as to the modern-day territories that fall within the ancient boundaries of Videha. During the epic Sri Ramayanam,  it was in this  Janakpur that Lord Rama and Sitadevi were married to each other.   The region and culture of Videha has got a pride of place.   The  kingdom is also mentioned in the Sanskrit epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana.  Janakpurdham is the headquarters of Dhanusa District in Nepal. Once it was connected to India by train as  Nepal Railways used to operate between Janakpur and India.  Janakpur is approximately 390 km and 10-hour drive from Kathmandu.

At Janakpur exists a magnificent Temple, dedicated to the daughter of the soil – Seetha Pirattiyar.   It is an example of Hindu-Koiri Nepali architecture. Fully built in bright white and constructed in an area of 4,860 sq. feet, the temple is 50 meters high.  It is a three-storied structure made entirely of stone and marble. All its 60 rooms are decorated with the flag of Nepal, colored glass, engravings and paintings, with beautiful lattice windows and turrets.

It is a puranic temple, so beautifully constructed and maintained – it looks much part of an older palace befitting Sri Rama and Sita devi.  People here are simple and fully imbued in their affection to the land and to the religious sanctity.  The temple stands majestically.  Here are some photos taken during darshan at this place on 3rd May 2018.

PS :  1)  Though so stated, this is not the place where Sitadevi was born.   The place of birth is perhaps Sitamarhi.  The district of Sitamarhi was carved out of Muzaffarpur district in Dec  1972. It is situated in the northern part of Bihar.  It is here that Sitadevi  sprang to life out of an earthern pot, when Raja Janakar  was ploughing the field.  In course of time, the land lapsed into a jungle until about 500 years ago, when Birbal Das came to know the site by divine inspiration where Sita was born. He came down from Ayodhya and cleared the jungle. He found the images set up by Raja Janak, built temple over there and commenced the worship of Janaki or Sita.

2)  the place where Sri Rama handled the dhanush of Siva is situate near Janakpur – we could not go to that place

3)  Raxaul is a sub-divisional town in the East Champaran district on the India-Nepal border opposite Birgunj (Nepal). Raxaul is a major railway terminus. The Indian border town of Raxaul is a busy place as 56% of the total products of Birgunj are exported to India through this place.

4)  this is part 1 ~ will post some more photos and perhaps a couple of more articles.

Wear Thiruman everyday ~ support Jaderi village !!

The city of Kanchi is known for its temples besides being famous for silk.  It was once the capital of Pallava kingdom which placed premium importance on architecture, with Mahabalipuram emerging as the greatest of exhibition of ‘rock architecture’.  Approx 9 kilometers away from the famous Kachi, after the river Palar lies the village of Mamandur,  for easy identification called as “Dusi Mamandur”.    In this serene village, is the small but beautiful temple of Lord Lakshmi Narayanar.    ~ and it is my native village !
Sri Ramanujar at Melukote Thirunarayanapuram

Dusi Mamandur is on way to Cheyyar from Thirukachi.  Cheyyar is a town in the Tiruvannamalai District ~ also known as Thiruvathipuram.    The town is situated at 30 km from Kanchipuram, 90 km from Thiruvannamalai.  Cheyyaru river is a seasonal river, a   tributary of Palar River, a river that  originates in Jawadhu Hills and flows through Thiruvannamalai district before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.  In Cheyyar, is a small village known as ‘Jaderi’ famous for the Thiruman that we wear every day.

The philosophy of Sri Vaishnava sampradaya is Vishishtadvaita .. we the followers of Sriman Narayana are easily identified by the ‘Thiruman’ that is worn on the forehead – it is not only a symbol, it is a protection for us.  It is Urdhva Pundram that goes up – it represents the Lotus feet of Sriman Narayana with Sri Lakshmi thayar in the middle in the form of Srichurnam.  Thirumannkappu is kavacham, the protection.

The purpose of life is to do kainkaryam to Emperuman in every manner – and that is better done in His Temples,  especially in divaydesams .. .. living in divyadesam itself is a great fortune, as we can have His darshan and it presents innumerable opportunities to do kainkaryam unto Him and those who serve Him – the Bagavathas.

The first and foremost duty of a Srivaishnavite is to bear His symbols and that way – adorning Thiruman is the foremost .. .. .. Thiruman is available at Melukote (Thirunarayanapuram) – our Emperumanar Ramanujar himself found that out there.  Ayodhya thiruman too is considered of good quality ~ nearer home in Cheyyar – there is a small village known as Jaderi, where the villagers are involved in the making of holy Thirumann.

Today received this parcel -   an online order for Thiruman through www.pracharam.in and today had the pleasure of receiving it delivered through courier.  It is a small opportunity to support those Srivaishnavas engaged in the manufacture of our sampradhaya Thiruman.  Since  Thirumankatti is not usually sold on its own, a small pack of Srichoornam (Kumkum) too was sent along.   They deliver orders within India.  For more details do visit the web : pracharam.in / contact   on +91-9655219245 or email srirangasri.srgm@gmail.com

Thiruvallikkeni Karthigai Masapravesam purappadu 2018

After the beautiful 10 day uthsavam of our Acaryar Swami Manavala Mamunigal occurred Poigai Azhwar sarrumurai, on which day was Mamunigal vidayarri sarrumurai – as also Pillai Logachar sarrumurai.  On Friday, it was kadanmallai Boothathazhwar sarrumurai.  Today, the month of Karthigai is born and hence mada veethi purappadu for masapravesam.

Thirukkadanmallai ~ Sri Boothath Azhwar avathara sthalam : 2018

Of the many kingdoms of Tamil Nadu, Pallavas ruled Thondaimandalam having Kanchipuram as their capital city.  The appreciatory stones describe that King Simha Vishnu  destroyed the last shred of adversity from the group of the learned. His son Mahendravarman succeeded him.   The paintings in the caves of  Trichnopoly,  Sittannavasal, musical inscription at Kudumiyamalai are attributed to him.  It was also era when Pallavas and Chalukyas warred. Pallavas fought a series of wars in the northern Vengi region, before Mahendravarma decimated his chief enemies at Pullalur.  Tamil literature flourished under his rule, and he was succeeded by his famous son -  Narasimhavarma I in 630 CE.  Narasimha varma also known as Mamallan (great wrestler) defeated Pulakeshin II and ransacked the Chalukyan capital city Vatapi (also known as Badami).  It was during his reign, in 640 AD, that the Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang visited Kanchipuram ~  and he is ever remembered for those great works of art at Mahabalipuram.

Sri Sthalasayana Perumal Thirukovil is at Thirukkadanmallai ~ in case the name does not ring a bell – it is more famously known as Mahabalipuram (simply Mamallapuram), an architectural marvel.  As the visitors alight for those magnificent sculptures – stands the ancient temple, a divyadesam.     It is at this divyadesam our Boothathazhwar was born.  Thiruvavathara uthsavam of Bootath Alwar gets celebrated in the month of Aippasi (Oct-Nov).  The temple is one of the 32 Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram that are declared as UN world heritage sites, but unlike others that are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, the temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Tomorrow (16th Nov 2018) is ‘Aippasiyil  Avittam’ marking the birth of  – Sri  Boothath Azhwar.   In the evening there would be grand purappadu of Azhwar with Sri Parthasarathi Perumal at Thiruvallikkeni.  Last year dawned so well,  as adiyen could have darshan of Alwar at avathara sthalam @ Thirukkadanmallai [the present day Mahabalipuram too]  : here is something on  bhuthathAzhwAr.   For us life is riddled with difficulties – one seeks solace in God – Sri Boothath Alwar tells us the simple way of life and reaching heavenly abode, by chanting the various names of Sriman Narayana.

Alwar offers a simple solution ~ understand and know through revelations and chant the various names of Sriman Narayana,  chanting His names and worshipping  His many avatars and archavatars will secure us a place by His side in the comity of Gods in heaven.

Azhvaargal literally means those who are immersed in the feet of Sriman Narayana in their devotion and affection unto Him only.  Among the 12 Azhwaars of Srivaishanva Tradition, Poigai Azhwar, Boothath Azhwar and Peyazhwar – were the ones to have descended on this Earth earlier.  They were contemporaries and are praised as “Muthal Azhwars (the first among the Azhwars).  They were born in the month of “Aippasi: in the thirunakshathirams of ‘Thiruvonam, Avittam, Sathayam’ respectively. This divine trio met on a rainy day at Thirukkovalur – when they sang 100 verses each which now form part of Moonravathu Ayiram (Iyarpa) in Naalayira Divyaprabandham.  Boothathu Alwar was the incarnation of the divine Mace (Kaumodaki) – he was born at Thirukadanmallai [the present day Mahabalipuram] on a ‘kurukkathi’ flower.

Here are some photos of Azhwar at Thirukkadanmallai and the avathara sthalam that lies just opposite to the Temple – these photos were  taken during last year’s sarrumurai on 29th  Oct 2017.  On Aippaisi Thirumoolam at Thiruvallikkeni, there will the ‘kaithalasevai’ of Sri Parthasarathi Perumal ~ similarly on Azhwar sarrumurai vaibhavam, there is kaithala sevai of Sri Sthalasayana Perumal.

Record my sincere thanks to the Thirukovil battars – Sri  Gopalakrishna Bhattachariar,  our beloved Kadanmallai Sridhar battar (Sridharan Soundararajan swami) and other kainkaryabarargal.
