Today 1^st Jan 2022, heralds the birth of a New year. Love it or hate it, many people feel compelled to count in the New Year at midnight, whether celebrating at a party or freezing outside watching fireworks. In the Gregorian calendar, New Year's Eve, is on December 31.

The Gregorian calendar is the calendar used in globally, it was introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII as a modification of the Julian calendar, reducing the average year from 365.25 days to 365.2425 days, and adjusting for the drift in the 'tropical' or 'solar' year that the inaccuracy had caused during the intervening centuries. The Julian calendar, proposed by Julius Caesar in AUC 708 (46 BC), was a reform of the Roman calendar. It was designed with the aid of Greek mathematicians and astronomers such as Sosigenes of Alexandria.

In many countries, celebrations generally go on past midnight into January 1 (New Year's Day). Old order changeth – yielding place to new” – there are many things which were a novelty at the time of their conception but lost their significance over the period of time. A few decades ago, New Year would usher in with hundreds of ‘Greeting Cards’ personally written wishes from relatives and friends that would make one happy. That was the time when people thronged Post Offices for Post cards, Inland letters and covers –– later it was phone calls and SMS, then e-mail took over ; Most telephony providers hike or charge special rates on festival days and the messages do get delayed due to overload of traffic. Now in the age of WhatsApp, even email/SMS/person-specific messages are gone !! - Social networks gets flooded with greeting messages (somehow many of them appear bulk inane messages with no life or personal touch !)

To Srivaishnavaites, today is significant for it is ‘Kettai thirunakshathiram’ in the month of Margazhi marking the sarrumurai celebrations of Thondaradipodi Azhwar. This year there is no purappadu as Pagal pathu is yet to begin at Thiruvallikkeni.

எம்பெருமான் குறித்து பக்தி செய்யவே நமக்கு இப்பிறப்பு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்தப் பூமி மிகப் பெரியது. இதில் மலைகள், கடல்கள், நதிகள், அருவிகள், பாலைவனங்கள், நிலங்கள் என்று பல இருப்பினும் மனிதன் வாழ்ந்து தெளிய உகந்த இடமாய் இருப்பது பாரதமும் அதன் க்ஷேத்திரங்களும்தான்! உலகத்தில் எவ்வளவோ நிலப்பரப்புகள் இருந்தாலும், நம் ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவர்களுக்கு மிக மிக புனிதமானது புனித காவேரி பாயும் தீவான திருவரங்கம்.

இன்று மன்னிய சீர் மார்கழியில் கேட்டை திருநக்ஷத்திரம். சோழநாட்டில் திருமண்டங்குடி என்ற சிற்றூரில் பராபவ வருடம், மார்கழி மாதம், கேட்டை நட்சத்திரத்தில் பெருமானின் வைஜயந்தி வனமாலையின் அம்சமாகக் கருதப்படும் தொண்டரடிப்பொடி ஆழ்வார் அவதரித்த தினம், ஆழ்வார் சாற்றுமுறை இன்று : முதல் ஆயிரத்தில் திருமாலை 45 பாசுரங்களும் திருப்பள்ளியெழுச்சி 11-ம் பாடியுள்ளார். எளிய தமிழில் உள்ளத்தைக் கொள்ளை கொள்ளும் பாசுரங்கள் தொண்டரடிப் பொடியுடையவை. இவர் பாடிய தலங்கள் ~ : திருவரங்கமும் நாம் பார்க்க முடியாத பரமபதமும்.

தொண்டரடிப்பொடி என்பது ஒரு வகையான புனைபெயர். வைணவ மரபில் பகவானின் அடியார்களின் திருவடிகளின் தூசுகூட புனிதமானது என்கிற நம்பிக்கையின் அதீத வடிவமாக தொண்டரடிப்பொடி என வைத்துக் கொண்டார். இவரது இயற்பெயர் விப்ர நாராயணன். திவ்ய பிரபந்தத்தில் பிறிதோர் இடத்தில கூட 'இப் பாததூளி படுதலால் இவ்வுலகம் பாக்கியம் செய்ததே' என்று வருகிறது. அனுதினமும் காலை எல்லா திவ்ய தேசங்களிலும் எம்பெருமானை பள்ளி எழுப்பும், திருப்பள்ளியெழுச்சி இவரது பாசுரம்.

The great saint by name Vipra Narayanar, born at Thirumandankudi also known as Bhaktanghri renu later came to be hailed as ‘Thondaradippodi Alvar’ due to his devotion to the devotees of Lord. Thondaradipodi rendered 55 verses in praise of Lord Ranganatha - 10 verses of Thirupalli Yezhuchi and 45 verses of Thiru Maalai. Thirupalliyezhuchi is recited in every temple to wake up the Lord and rendered during kalasanthi in the morning. Here is a pasuram from his Thirumalai :

ஊரிலேன் காணியில்லை உறவு மற்றொருவரில்லை

பாரில்நின் பாதமூலம் பற்றிலேன் பரம மூர்த்தி

காரொளி வண்ணனே என் கண்ணனே கதறுகின்றேன்

ஆருளர்க் களைகணம்மா அரங்கமா நகருளானே.

Thondaradipodi Azhwar in his emotive address to Lord Ranganatha laments his misfortune of not having born in divyadesams; has no relatives, nothing to claim for and have acquaintance with the place of the Lord. Oh Lord of dark radiance, I have not even secured your feet – I scream and call your names and there can be none other that the Great Lord of Thiruvarangam ~ Lord Ranganatha who owns the Universe and resides at Srirangam (described as ‘Arangamaanagar’) who can protect me…

தமிழ் ஒரு இனிய மொழி. நம் ஆழ்வார்களோ அந்த அமிழ்தில் திளைத்தவர்கள். இங்கே வண்டு திணர்த்த வயல் என்றதும் வண்டுகள் நிறைந்து இருக்கும் கழனிகள் என கொள்ளலாகாது; திணர்த்தல் என்றால் - நெருக்கமாதல் ; கனமாகப் படிந்திருத்தல். இதன்படியே - வண்டல் மண் கனமாகப் படிந்து அதிலே வளமான பயிர்கள் விளையும் வயல்கள் சூழ்ந்த திருவரங்கத்தில் எழுந்தருளி இருக்கும் அரங்கநாதப் பெருமானை துயிலெழுப்பப் பாடல்கள் அருளவே (ஒரு சூரியன் போல) ஒளியோடு தோன்றிய, நிலைபெற்ற பெருமை வாய்ந்த, தொண்டரடிப்பொடியாழ்வார் அவதரித்த பழமையான தலம் திருமண்டங்குடி என்று நான்மறையாளர்கள் பகர்வர்.

Thondaradippodi Aazhwar immersed in bakthi sung everyday to wake up the Lord. He sang about Thiruvarangam and Paramapatham.
