Thirumylai Sri Madhava Perumal - "maadhava maamava dEvaa krishNaa"

In the capital of Tamil Nadu is the pristine Temple of Sri Parthasarathi Swami at Thiruvallikkeni.   Though not the earliest British settlement in the Indian Peninsula, Madras possessed a peculiar interest as constituting, with the exception of the insignificant site at Armagon, the first territorial acquisition by the English in Hindustan.  Centuries  earlier to  East India company these occurrences – the places of Thiruvallikkeni and Thirumylai thrived.  They predate British rule by several centuries;   “Mylapore” [Thiru Mayilai],   has been a cultural hub; one of the oldest residential parts of the city, also known as VEdapuri and Mayurapuri.  Thirumayilai has the avathara sthalam of Sri Peyalwar at Arundale Street – nearer is Sri Madhava Perumal thirukovil.  Mylai is famous for Sri Kapaleeswarar temple which is connected with the S'aivite Nayanmars.

Mādhava  is among the most beautiful names of Lord Sree Krishna -  the  word mādhava in Sanskrit is  a vriddhi derivation of the word madhu (मधु) meaning  honey. It therefore functions as an adjective describing anything relating to honey and sweetness. The word  describes a person descended from the Madhu clan, just like rāghava, yādava and Kaurava describe a person descended from the Raghu, Yadu and the Kuru clans respectively.  King Madhu, was a great king who belonged to yadavkul, After Madhu his great grandson Vrishni was born in yadavkul, Vrishni was a great king and after 5th generation of King Vrishni Lord Krishna was born in vrishni clan. Due to same lineage of Krishna was called Madhava.

According to the Bhakti-Sects., Lord Sree Krishna attracts all beings due to His Four Madhuris, the eternal sweetnesses, namely, Venu-madhuri, Roop-madhuri, Lila-madhuri and PremaRaas-madhuri.  Bhagwan Shri Madhav Ji is the Chief Deity of Tirthraj Prayag. Twelve forms of Madhav Ji is situated at Prayag and known as Dwadash Madhav

Sri Narayana Teerthar was a great saint, devotee of Sri Krishna and sang many songs on him.  He was born in  Andhra Pradesh, lived in Guntur district near Mangalagiri. His birth name was Govinda Sastrulu. He later  moved to Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. He mastered music at a very early age and studied Puranas, Bhagavata Purana and other Sanskrit works. He renounced family at a very early age and took on a life of a religious devotion. He went to Varanasi to spread his philosophy. Teertha was very well versed in Music and, Natya Shastra, and a great scholar in Sanskrit. He used at least 34 popular ragas. He used Triputa, Adi, Rupaka, Chapu, Jampa, Matya, Vilamba, Eka and Ata taalams. Many of the songs are structurally well set for direct use as nritya or natya padams.  He wrote 15 books and some of them are available in Benares Hindu University and Parijatapaharanam at Saraswathi Mahal in Tanjore. He is also credited with composing two other operas, Parijaa Apaharanam and Haribhakti Sudharnavam.

Narayana Teertha was the author of a Sanskrit opera called Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini on the life of the Hindu god Lord Krishna. It deals with the life story of Krishna starting with his birth, childhood pranks and ending with his marriage to Rukmini. Narayana Teertha uses various literary and musical forms such as songs, prose passages, slokas (praises in verse), dwipadis (couplets), etc. The songs are popularly called "Tarangas" means waves. The lyrics are simple yet beautiful and effective.  Here is his keerthana on Madhava – Lord Krishna

maadhava maamava dEvaa krishNaa

yaadava krishNaa yadukula krishNaa

anupallavi

saadujanaadhaara sarvabhaava

maadhava maamava dEvaa krishNaa

this beautiful composition is set in Rag Neelambari, Adi Talam – Narayana theerthar beseeches Lord -  Oh Madhava (Lord Krishna), Lord of the Yadava dynasty, protect me. You are a support to all saints. Oh Madhava the source of all thoughts, please protect me.
