Aippaisi Sadayam - Sri Peyazhwar Sarrumurai .. .. avathara sthalam 2020

Centuries before the advent of colonialism and the arrival of British East India Company, Madras existed on a scale far smaller.  When East India bought a piece of land and later built a garrison, the fort  was contiguous to it on its northern side. Georgetown was a sparsely populated suburb, occupied by gardens and' garden-houses,'  where  the Company's servants retired for rest and relaxation. The districts to the westward were marked by tiny villages, centres of agricultural

areas held by the Company on precarious grants from the government of the country, while everything south of Triplicane was native territory, over which the British had no dominion.

HD Love in his Vestiges of Old Madras describes:  two streams flowing from the west and north respectively had a common outlet to the sea about a mile south of the village of Madraspatam. The first, which was' then known as the Triplicane River, and now as the Cooum, followed a winding course through the villages of

Chetput, Nungumbaukum, and Triplicane.  At the time of the founding of Fort St. George, the adjacent village of Triplicane (Tiruvallikkeni) contained an ancient temple, now called Parthasarathi svamin, dating from the Pallava period. No Madras temple is explicitly mentioned in the records until 1652, but some unofficial evidence has been traced, to set forth which it will be convenient to work backwards from what is certain to what is only conjectural.

Mylapore too finds mention – it was Portugese occupied area.  When the French squadron arrived at San' Thome in June, 1672, an English vessel called the Ruby, belonging to the' sieur Gersey,' was lying in the roadstead. Acting on a hint from Governor Langhorn, who was not on good terms with Mr. Jearsey, the French commander seized the ship. Langhorn subsequently applied, perhaps not very earnestly, for her restoration, but in vain; and she was eventually despatched to France. The seizure caused some irritation among the residents of Fort St. George.

Mylapore has been a shoppers’ paradise ~  the  historical place has two MRTS railway stations : Thirumayilai and Sri Mundakakanni amman temple.  In between runs Kutchery road, linking Beach Road with Luz Junction and you would have travelled many a times on this – do you know that one of the bylanes leads to a famous landmark with divine connection !  - the Arundale Street .. ..  next time, for sure when you travel on Kutchery road towards beach, you might take a turn and reach this place, if you have not visited this earlier…. at Arundale Street  – otherwise not so noticeable one… that winds its way towards Sri Madhava Perumal Kovil ~ and just a couple of yards in to the Street, lies this famous place with divine connection.

Among the 12 Azhwaars of Srivaishanva Tradition, Poigai Azhwar, Boothath Azhwar and Peyazhwar – were the ones to have descended on this Earth earlier.  They were contemporaries and are praised as “Muthal Azhwars (the first among the Azhwars).  They were born in the month of “Aippasi: in the thirunakshathirams of ‘Thiruvonam, Avittam, Sathayam’ respectively. This divine trio met on a rainy day at Thirukkovalur – when they sang 100 verses each which now form part of Moonravathu Ayiram (Iyarpa) in Naalayira Divyaprabandham.

Monday 26th Oct 2020 is Vijayadasami special day – today is also  ‘Sadhayam in the month of Aippasi’ ~ the sarrumurai of Sri Peyalwar.   .. .. some photos of  Sri Peyalwar from Sri Madhava Perumal Thirukovil, Thirumylai and  Alwar avatharasthalam at Arundale street, Mylapore are posted here.

Among the many things that we miss is Emperuman purappadu – On Peyalwar sarrumurai day – first Sri Peyalwar would come in pallakku to the sannathi – then there will be the short purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi perumal to Peyalwar sannathi – thriumanjanam – thirumozhi goshti, Moonram thiruvanthathi;  in the evening there would be periya mada veethi purappadu ; thiruvaimozhi goshti in peyalwar sannathi and Perumal along with azhwar would return to Thirukovil late in the day.  Next day morning would be ganthapodi uthsavam of Azhwar.  Here are some photos of Azhwar Perumal purappadu in the morning of  20.10.2018.
