Aandal Thiruppavai ilakkiyam : நென்னல் & the word Geostran !!

 

How good is your language skills – do you know what is the meaning of Tamil word  நென்னல்  or the word Geostran !! 

A day, as we know well -  is the time period of a full rotation of the Earth with respect to the Sun. On average, this is 24 hours (86,400 seconds). As a day passes at a given location it experiences morning, afternoon, evening, and night. This daily cycle drives circadian rhythms in many organisms, which are vital to many life processes.   Earth's rotation period relative to the International Celestial Reference Frame, called its stellar day by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), is 86 164.098 903 691 seconds of mean solar time. 

As we learn about the Day – there has to be Yesterday and Tomorrow as well.  Yesterday is a temporal construct of the relative past; literally of the day before the current day (today), or figuratively of earlier periods or times, often but not always within living memory. 

"Geostran dæg" is the Old English term for "yesterday," literally meaning "the day that is gone" or "yesterday's day," combining geostran (yesterday) and dæg (day). It's the ancient root of the modern English word "yesterday" and reflects how time passes quickly, with related forms found in other Germanic languages. The word "yesterday" traces its roots back to Old English and ancient Germanic languages.   It comes from geostran dæg of Old English, where geostran means "yesterday" and dæg means "day". In Proto-Germanic, the root is believed to be **gester-*, which also gave rise to the German gestern and Old Norse gær.

 

 

கோதை ஆண்டாளின் திருப்பாவை ஒரு சிறந்த பக்தி இலக்கியம்.  நோன்பு நோற்கும் ஆயர் சிறுமியர், கண்ணனைப் போற்றிப் பாடி, பறை பெறுவதற்காக நந்தகோபனின் மாளிகைக்கு வந்துள்ளனர். அவர்கள் ஆங்கே, வாயிற் காவலனைப் பார்த்து, "நேற்று கண்ணன் பறை தருவதாக வாக்குக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறான், நாங்கள் தூய்மையாக வந்துள்ளோம், கதவைத் திற" என்று வேண்டுகின்றனர். 

இந்த பாசுரத்தில் ஆரம்ப வரிகள் : 

நாயகனாய்  நின்ற நந்தகோபன்  உடைய

கோயில்  காப்பானே கொடித்தோன்றும்  தோரண வாயில்  காப்பானே  

இந்த பாசுரத்தில் ஆண்டாள் நாச்சியார் எம்பெருமான் தனக்கு அளித்த வாக்கை பற்றி குறிப்பிட "மாயன் மணிவண்ணன் நென்னலே வாய் நேர்ந்தான்" என இயம்புகிறாள்.  இந்த 'நென்னல்' என்றால் என்ன என்பது பற்றியே இந்த பதிவு. 

பகவானை அடைவதற்காக பாவை நோன்பு இருக்கும் கோதை - நென்னல் எனும் சொல், அதிகமாக தமிழில் வழக்கில் இல்லையோ !!  நென்னல் என்றால் - இன்றைக்கு முன் சென்ற நாள்;   "நென்னலே" என்பது நேற்றைக் குறிக்கும் ஒரு இலக்கியச் சொல், பெரும்பாலும் பக்தி இலக்கியங்களில் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.

நென்னல் - நெருநல் என்பதன் மரூஉ.  நெருநல் என்ற சொல்லுக்கு நேற்று என்று பொருள், குறிப்பாக 'நேற்று இருந்தவன் இன்று இல்லை' என்ற நிலையாமையை உணர்த்தும் திருக்குறள் 336-இல் இந்தச் சொல் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது;   "நெருநல் உளனொருவன் இன்றில்லை என்னும் பெருமை உடைத்து இவ்வுலகு"

"நென்ன னோக்கி நின்றா ரொருவர்" என்பது சிலப்பதிகாரத்தில் வரும் ஒரு தொடர், இதன் பொருள், "நேற்றை நோக்கி நின்ற ஒருவர்" அல்லது "நேற்று ஒருவர் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார்" என்பதாகும். இங்கும்  'நென்னல்' என்பது 'நேற்று' என்ற பொருளைத் தரும் ஒரு பழைய தமிழ்ச் சொல்.
