some history of 31st May ~ Sri Varadhar Aadi Hastham purappadu 2025

Today - July 31 is the 212th  day of the year (213th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar; 153 days remain until the end of the year.

The Battle of Alexandria was fought on July 1 to July 30, 30 BC between the forces of Octavian and Mark Antony during the last war of the Roman Republic. In the Battle of Actium, Antony had lost the majority of his fleet and had been forced to abandon the majority of his army in Greece, where without supplies they eventually surrendered. Although Antony's side was hindered by a few desertions, he still managed to narrowly defeat Octavian's forces in his initial defence. The desertions continued, however, and, in early August, Octavian launched a second, ultimately successful, invasion of Egypt, after which Antony and his lover, Cleopatra, committed suicide

Alamgir I - commonly known by the title Aurangzeb, was the sixth Mughal emperor, reigning from 1658 until his death in 1707. Aurangzeb and the Mughals belonged to a branch of the Timurid dynasty who ruthless and cruel. He held administrative and military posts under his father Shah Jahan – but ended up declaring him incompetent to rule and imprisoning him in Agra Fort.  On this day in 1658, he declared himself the ruler and held coronation in Sheesh mahal.

Today the Nation must remember one of its greatest sons – Udham Singh born on 26.12.1899 and martyred this day 85 years ago !  He is also referred to as Shaheed-i-Azam Sardar Udham Singh (the expression "Shaheed-i-Azam", means "the great martyr").   Sadly, Amritsar was the place when on 13th April 1919 hundreds of innocents were massacred by the British – the  Jallianwala Bagh massacre, involving the killings of hundreds of Indian civilians on the orders of Reginald Edward Harry Dyer. On 13 March 1940, Michael O'Dwyer was scheduled to speak at a joint meeting of the East India Association and the Central Asian Society (now Royal Society for Asian Affairs) at Caxton Hall, London.  Udham Singh concealed inside his jacket pocket a revolver he had earlier purchased from a soldier in a pub,  entered the hall and shot him with  bullets passing  through O'Dwyer's heart and right lung, killing him almost instantly.  Singh was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. On 31 July 1940, Udham Singh was hanged at Pentonville Prison. His remains are preserved at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab. On every 31 July, marches are held in Sunam by various organisations and every statue of Singh in the city is paid tribute with flower garlands.

On the religious front, it was  Aadi Hastham  yesterday and at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, Sri Varadharaja Perumal had siriya mada veethi purappadu  hearing Peyalwar’s moonram thiruvanthathi.

Sri DEvathiraJar wears an attractive  gem crown with holy thulasi  wreath over it.  He has the adorable hue of a dark gem. He resides in the mountain that cool streams flowing around, making the place serene and pleasant.  It is He who came running to save His devotee – Gajendra, the elephant and killed the crocodile that troubled Gajendra.   He came and killed a crocodile living in the lake.
