Fire has been a core
principle in most traditions, cultures
and religions across the globe. Lighting a Lamp is considered sacred - a daily ritual, a key step taken on the path of light, fire,
and grace. Lamp is reverred and the
flame not only provides light but also enlightens !
Away, there is Electricity. We use light bulbs every day: at homes,
offices, stores and more. When we
talk about a “regular lightbulb,” we mean an incandescent bulb, the type that’s
been around since Thomas Edison patented his invention in 1879. An incandescent
light bulb, is an electric light with a wire filament that is heated until it
glows. The filament is enclosed in a glass bulb that is filled with vacuum or
inert gas to protect the filament from oxidation. Current is supplied to the
filament by terminals or wires embedded in the glass. A bulb socket provides
mechanical support and electrical connections.
Incandescent bulbs are
manufactured in a wide range of sizes, light output, and voltage ratings, from
1.5 volts to about 300 volts. They require no external regulating equipment,
have low manufacturing costs, and work equally well on either alternating current
or direct current. As a result, the incandescent bulb became widely. Incandescent bulbs typically have short
lifetimes compared with other types of lighting. There reportedly have been inventors prior
to Edison of General Electric. Thomas
Alwa Edison's version was able to outstrip the others because of a combination
of three factors: an effective incandescent material, a higher vacuum and a
high resistance that made power distribution from a centralized source
economically viable.
For decades, 100-watt
incandescent light bulbs have lit up hallways and bedrooms; 60-watt
incandescents have shone softer light from reading lamps and closets. But
incandescent lights are inefficient, waste lots of energy as heat, and have
shorter lifespans than fluorescent lamps. Recently, more-efficient compact
fluorescent (CFL) bulbs have become popular alternatives. Where incandescent
lights last an average of around 1,200 hours, CFLs can last 10,000 hours !! Unfortunately,
CFLs contain toxic mercury that makes them potentially hazardous and a pain to
dispose of.
Then came LED – not exactly
of recent origin. LEDs offer the
advantages of CFLs – lower power consumption and longer lifetimes – without the
downside of toxic mercury. So these
days, none uses those gundu bulbs, replaced by LED bulbs. Technically, LED bulbs aren’t bulbs – LED
stands for “light-emitting diode.” They’re tiny semiconductors (diodes) wrapped
in plastic to protect the elements and focus the light. LED do not have
filaments and function completely different. When a current passes through the
electrodes and semi-conductive material, it emits visible light, or a photon.
It has been over a
century since the English engineer H. J. Round first discovered the phenomenon
of electroluminescence, a breakthrough that led directly to Oleg Losev’s
invention of the first light-emitting diode (LED) in 1927. LEDs are inherently
flexible, allowing for a wide range of design possibilities. From bendable
strips to ultra-thin panels, LEDs can be incorporated into virtually any space.
This flexibility enables more creative and customized lighting solutions for
residential, commercial, and industrial applications. Human-centric lighting (HCL) is a growing
trend that focuses on the biological and emotional impacts of light on humans.
By mimicking natural light patterns, HCL can improve mood, enhance cognitive function,
and regulate sleep-wake cycles. This trend is particularly relevant in
workplaces, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions.
The future of LED bulbs
is bright, with advancements focused on higher efficiency, improved color
quality, integration with smart technology, and enhanced sustainability. Expect
to see more sophisticated smart lighting systems, human-centric lighting
mimicking natural daylight, and wider adoption in various applications, from
homes to industrial settings.
Moving away from such
Electric lights - for us it is the
divine lights that leads to salvation. We follow the path of light to
move to the lotus feet of Sriman Narayana.
