Today 26th May 2o25 is Vaikasi Amavasai. Moon attracts ~ it waxes and wanes, can it be wonderful and biggest on a day when it is not to be seen ?
In astronomy, new moon is the first phase of the Moon, when it orbits are not seen from the Earth; the moment when the Moon and the Sun have the same ecliptical longitude. The Moon is not visible at this time except when it is seen in silhouette during a solar eclipse when it is illuminated by earthshine. A lunation or synodic month is the mean (average) time from one new moon to the next. The average length of a lunation is 29.530588 days (or 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 3 seconds).
In recent years, the year’s largest supermoon has been a full moon. The largest supermoon on record occurred on November 14, 2016, and the next closest supermoon in the 21st century will occur on December 6, 2052. New moon of May 2025 leaves the night sky dark to see the summer constellations. Two days after its new phase, the moon will make a close pass to Jupiter in the evening sky while the summer constellations will be rising.
New moons happen when the moon is directly between Earth and the sun. They share a celestial longitude (called right ascension by astronomers), a projection of the Earth's longitude lines on the sky measured eastward from the point where the sun crosses the celestial equator. This position is also called a conjunction. If the sun and the moon line up perfectly the result is a solar eclipse; but that does not happen most of the time, as the moon's orbit is tilted 5 degrees relative to Earth's orbit. (The next solar eclipse is due on Sept. 21). That means seeing the new moon isn't possible, due to the sun's glare. Even if the sun were blocked, the moon would be facing away from us, showing the dark side, which would just be black on a black background.
We say “largest” despite the fact that we won’t see this moon. We can’t see it because every new moon travels across the sky with the sun during the day. Astronomers sometimes call the year’s nearest perigee moon a proxigee moon.
