30.4.2025 was an important day – day 8 of Emperumanar Uthsavam and
one promoted as a day of prosperity !
It is a transition metal element, with symbol Ag, atomic number 47, and atomic weight of 107.8682. There is a table and atomic number of an element is the number of protons in the nucleus of its atoms. The periodic table of the elements, is an ordered arrangement of the chemical elements into rows ("periods") and columns ("groups"). It is an icon of chemistry and is widely used in physics and other sciences. It's a fundamental property that defines which element it is. The element with atomic number 47 is silver (Ag). In Greek mythology, Agamemnon was a king of Mycenae who commanded the Achaeans during the Trojan War. He was the son of King Atreus and Queen Aerope, the brother of Menelaus, the husband of Clytemnestra, and the father of Iphigenia, Iphianassa, Electra, Laodike, Orestes and Chrysothemis.
Silver is known for its purity. After testing 23 methods of purifying water, NASA chose silver as the purifying agent on the first Space Shuttle programme. The Mānasollāsa, also known as Abhilashitartha Chintamani, is an early 12th century Sanskrit text composed by the South Indian king Someshvara III of the KalyaniChalukya dynasty. It is an encyclopedic work that inter-alia states that it is the sovereign’s duty to protect the forests where elephants thrive — because only the richest and widest of forests can support the large, long-ranging Elephas maximus.
The current silver price in Chennai is ₹107.90 per gram and
₹1,07,900 per kilogram. This is consistent with the price of ₹108 per gram and
₹10,800 per 100 grams reported by other sources. Silver
(XAG) might reach an all-time high of $50 per ounce in the next 5 years if the
market conditions improve as expected, according to the latest silver price
predictions and forecasts published by online AI-based forecasting agencies. According to an annual analysis from the
Silver Institute, the worldwide market for silver is forecasted to have a
fourth consecutive year of supply shortfall. This year, silver has outperformed
gold in terms of gains.
The World Silver Survey, which was issued on mid-April, indicates that the worldwide industrial demand for silver is forecasted to grow to a new record high this year, contributing to the shortage. In 2023, the demand for silver in industrial applications increased by 11%, reaching a record-breaking 654.4 million ounces, according to the report. The solar industry, which employs the metal in photovoltaics, or the conversion of light into power, as well as other "green economy applications," backed that.
Today’s silver comes from three primary sources: silver mining; silver produced as a by-product of mining for other metals; and silver recycled from used materials, including old jewelry and photographic films and chemicals. Silver is extracted from the Earth through mining, either through open-pit or underground methods, followed by refining to separate the silver from the ore. The mining process involves crushing and grinding the ore, and then refining can include various techniques like froth flotation, smelting, or electrolytic refining. Though Silver is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, it is not easy to get. This is because silver isn’t very reactive—meaning it doesn’t easily combine with other elements. That’s why it’s often found in its elemental form, as opposed to other metals which are found in compounds.
Once the silver is mined, it needs to be processed and purified before it can be used in products like jewelry and watches. This is a long and intricate process, but the end result is a beautiful, valuable metal that has been cherished by humans for centuries. From the mines, the silver is then transferred to a refinery. The first step in the refining process is to remove any dirt or rocks that may be mixed in with the silver. This is done by sending the silver through a sieve, which separates the heavier particles from the lighter ones. The lighter particles are then blown away, leaving only the pure silver behind. The next step is to remove any other impurities by boiling the silver in a special solution that will dissolve any unwanted substances. The pure silver will remain undissolved, while all of the impurities will be carried away in the boiling solution. Afterwards, the silver is melted down and poured into molds to create bars or coins.
30th April 2025 was day 8 of Udayavar Uthsavam and was ‘Akshyatritiya’
~ a day marketed to be good to buy gold and other ornaments. “Akshaya Tritiya” is the
day when Lord Parashuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu,
was born. One of the most important legends associated
with observing AkshayaTrithiya is that of Lord Krishna and Sudama
[Kuchela]. Another significant occurrence is that of the
Pandavas receiving the Akshay Patra from Krishna. It was day 8 of
Sri Udayavar Uthsavam – and in the evening it was ‘ Yaanai vahanam’ for Swami
Emperumanar. The elephant vahanam in
Thiruvallikkeni is silvery. Swami Emperumanaar had purappadu
on the silver elephant and the oozing grace simply outweighed the serenity and
beauty of the moon – one could see only the kindness and glory of
Swami. Here are some photos of Swami Yathirajar on silver Yaanaivahanam.

Nicely written. 👌👏
ReplyDeleteCouple of quick questions, though.
1. What is the relationship between Silver and Agamemnon?
2. “Today’s silver comes from three primary sources: silver mining; silver produced as a by-product of mining for other metals; and silver recycled from used materials, including old jewelry and photographic films and chemicals.”
What is the 3rd primary source? Should we assume that photographic films & chemicals as the 3rd source.
