Aani masa piravesam 2022 - Sri Parthasarathi swami purappadu

Phenomenal writer Sujatha’s novel was taken as Gayathri starring Rajanikanth / Sridevi and then came another directed by SP Muthuraman, featuring Rajni and Sripriya – scene of action occurring in Singapore – it was ‘Priya’ released in 1978.  In a subsequent Sujatha expressed his frustration in a dialogue of Vasanth.

Et tu, Brute? is a Latin phrase literally meaning "and you, Brutus?", often translated as "You as well, Brutus?", "You too, Brutus?" .. .. it is from William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, uttered  by the Roman dictator Julius Caesar, at the moment of his assassination, to his friend Marcus Junius Brutus, upon recognizing him as one of the assassins.   The phrase is often used apart from the plays to signify an unexpected betrayal by a friend.

The play opens with two tribunes discovering the commoners of Rome celebrating Julius Caesar's triumphant return from defeating the sons of his military rival, Pompey. The tribunes, insulting the crowd for their change in loyalty from Pompey to Caesar, attempt to end the festivities and break up the commoners, who return the insults.   Cassius attempts to convince Brutus to join his conspiracy to kill Caesar. Although Brutus, friendly towards Caesar, is hesitant to kill him, he agrees that Caesar may be abusing his power. They then hear from Casca that Mark Antony has offered Caesar the crown of Rome three times. Casca tells them that each time Caesar refused it with increasing reluctance, hoping that the crowd watching would insist that he accept the crown.

The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is a history play and tragedy by William Shakespeare first performed in 1599. In the play, Brutus joins a conspiracy led by Cassius to assassinate Julius Caesar, to prevent him from becoming a tyrant. Caesar's right-hand man Antony stirs up hostility against the conspirators and Rome becomes embroiled in a dramatic civil war.  The play ends with a tribute to Brutus by Antony, who proclaims that Brutus has remained "the noblest Roman of them all"  because he was the only conspirator who acted, in his mind, for the good of Rome.

We mark time in many different ways. One unit – the month – has been in use for thousands of years.  In the calendar that we know, the present month, June is the sixth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, the second of four months to have a length of 30 days, and the third of five months to have a length of less than 31 days. June contains the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the day with the most daylight hours, and the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, the day with the fewest daylight hours.

June is named after the Roman goddess Juno – the god of marriage and childbirth, and the wife of Jupiter, king of the gods. She is depicted as seated on  a chariot.  On the ancient Roman calendar, mensis Iunius or Iunius, also Junius (June), was the fourth month, following Maius (May).   The month following June was called Quinctilis or Quintilis, the "fifth" month.  Iunius was renamed Iulius (July) in honour of Julius Caesar.

Gaius Julius Caesar (Latin: [100 BC – 44 BC) was a Roman general and statesman. A member of the First Triumvirate, Caesar led the Roman armies in the Gallic Wars before defeating his political rival Pompey in a civil war, and subsequently became dictator of Rome from 49 BC until his assassination in 44 BC. He played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire.

Translation or adaptation of the bard’s work may be seen as an attempt to deuniversalise Shakespeare and argue for a political reading of his plays – there have been some adaptations in Tamil too .. .. I remember seeing a drama way back in mid 1970s at Sri Parthasarathi Swami sabha (presently Vijay Avenue exists in that place in Venkatrangam Street, Triplicane) – though the stage actors were doing well, the crowd presence was very minimal and some heckled the acting too !!

In Tamil tinseldom, an early presence of Shakespeare was to be seen  in the balcony scene in the 1937 version of ‘Ambikapathy’, starring MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. The scene, modelled on ‘Romeo and Juliet’, employs a near-exact translation of the lines from the balcony scene from Shakespeare’s acclaimed romantic tragedy. Though there were some Sivaji movies,   Rajnikanth in ‘Priya’ (1978) acted as  Julius Caesar but he would not utter - "You too, Brutus?"

Not sure, whether this type of presentation is to the liking of my regular readers – if not, please bear with me.  15.6.22 was Aani masa pravesam and there was siriya maada veethi purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi perumal – here are some photos of the purappadu.
