worshipping at Malai Nattu divyadesam ~ செல்வர்கள் வாழும் திருக்கடித்தானமே

Changanassery is a municipal town in Kottayam district in the state of Kerala.  Changanassery is the gateway to the Western Ghats and Kuttanad. It is one of the major educational   centres of Kerala, with nearly 100% literacy.

The first recorded history on the origin of Changanacherry is obtained from Sangam period literature. According to Sangam era documents, Uthiyan Cheralathan (Perum Chorru Udiyan Cheralathan, Athan I, or Udiyanjeral - AD c. 130) is the first recorded Chera dynasty ruler.   He had his capital at a place called "Kuzhumur" in Kuttanad and expanded the kingdom northward and eastward from his original homeland.   His consort was Veliyan Nalini, the daughter of Veliyan Venman. Keralathan's descendant was Cheran Senguttavan. This is no post on History but on a Malai nadu divyadesam .. .. Thrikkodithanam is a village in Kottayam district on the outskirts of Changanassery Municipality.

Thrikodithanam Mahavishnu Temple is a beautiful fortified Temple, a divyadesam dedicated to Sriman Narayana located in Thrikkodithanam, Kottayam District, Kerala. Constructed in the Kerala style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandham by Swami Nammalwar.

It is one of the five ancient shrines in the Kottayam-Alappuzha-Pathanamthitta area of Kerala, connected with the legend of Mahabharata, where the five Pandavas built one temple each; Thrichittatttu Maha Vishnu Temple (Thiruchenganur Thiruchirraru) by Yudhishthira, Puliyur Mahavishnu Temple (Kuttanattu Thiruppuliyur) by Bheema, Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple (Thiruvaramula / Thiruvaranvilai) by Arjuna, Thiruvanvandoor Mahavishnu Temple (Vaigal thiruvanvandoor) by Nakula and Thrikodithanam Mahavishnu  (Solai thirukkadithanathurai) Temple by Sahadeva. The temple is open from 4:00 am to 11:00 am and 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and is administered by Travancore Devaswom Board of the Government of Kerala.

The Divya Kshetram was built by Sahadeva of Pandavas. At this holy place, King Rukmangatha of Surya Vamsa undertook Ekadasi Vratham and gifted all his punyas to Devas by which he reached Devaloka.   A monthly Sravana Deepams (festival of light) is performed.  The presiding deity in the temple is Athpudha Narayanan, who is also named as "Amirutha Narayanan". Emperuman as in most Kerala divyadesams is in standing posture facing the east direction.  The temple in Kerala architecture, has a two storeyed gopuram with the upper storey having wooden trails covering the Kottupura, the hall of drum beating during festivals. A rectangular wall around the temple, called Kshetra-Madilluka pierced by the gateways, encloses all the shrines of the temple. The metal plated Dwajasthambam and the Deepastamba, the light post, are located axial to the temple tower leading to the sanctum. Chuttuambalam is the outer pavilion located within the temple walls.

The holy  Nallambalam has pillared halls and corridors.  Between the entrance of Nallambalam to the sanctum, there is a raised square platform called Namaskara Mandapa (altar) which has a pyramidal roof. Thevrapura, the kitchen used to cook offering to the deity is located on the left of Namaskara Mandapa from the entrance. Balithara, altar is used for making ritualistic offering to devathas and the festive deities. The sanctum called Sreekovil, houses the image of the presiding deity. It is on an elevated platform with a single door reached through a flight of five steps. Either sides of the doors have images of   Dwarapalakas.  Only the main priest called Thantri and the second priest called Melshanthi  can enter the Sree Kovil. Santhan and flowers are offered as Prasad.  The temple has paintings on its walls dating back to many centuries.   The temple tank named Bhoomi Theertham is located opposite to the temple. The Vimanam, the roof the sanctum is called Punniya koti Vimaanam.

This Divya Desam is located about 4kms East of Chenganacheri – and can easily be reached from Chengannur or Thiruvalla.  Many express trains on the Kochi-Kottayam-Trinvandrum stop at Changanacheri. In the month of Vaisakha is celebrated ‘Pancha divyadesa darshan yatra’.  A divine  ‘rath’ carrying the  sacred flame is taken to the five   ancient Vishnu temples at Aranmula, Thrichittattu, Thrippuliyur, Tiruvanvandoor, and Thrikkodithanam, on a single day.

So next time, you visit Kerala, plan to have darshan at the divyadesams by staying in Thiruvalla or Chenganur .. – Thiruvaramula, Thiruvanvandoor, Thirupuliyur, Thiruchitraru, Thirukadithanom, Thiruvallavazh (Thiruvalla) and more .. ..
