Thirukkadanmallai [Mahabalipuram] - Sri Boothath Azhwar Sarrumurai 2020

No prize for guessing ! .. ..

What is written all around is the place “Mamallapuram” has its origins in the word ‘Mamallan’, the title bestowed on Narasimhavarman II, the great king of the Pallava dynasty that existed between the 3rd and the 9th century. ‘Mamallan’ means ‘great wrestler’.  During the reign of Pallava King Narasimhavarman I (630-668 AD) ,  Hiuen Tsang, the Chinese Buddhist monk-traveller, visited the Pallava capital at Kanchipuram. Narasimhavarman II (c.700-728 AD), also known as Rajasimhan, built on the work of earlier Pallava kings to consolidate maritime mercantile links with southeast Asia.  Most interestingly, as historian Tansen Sen recorded in his 2003 work Buddhism, Diplomacy and Trade: The Realignment of Sino-Indian Relations, 600-1400, Narasimhavarman II sent a mission to the Tang court.   Pleased with the Indian king’s offer to form a coalition against the Arabs and Tibetans, the Chinese emperor bestowed the title of ‘huaide jun’ (the Army that Cherishes Virtue) to Narayansimha II’s troops ! The offer of help by the Pallava ruler, Sen noted, may have had more to do with furthering trade and for the prestige of association with the Chinese emperor.

No historical post this .. .. this place had a beautiful name ‘Kadanmallai’ – the hillocks situate closer to the Sea – and the place that housed the great temple of Lord Sthalasayana Perumal – Emperuman Sriman Narayanan in reclining posture – a Srivaishnava divyadesam and associated to be the birth place of Muthal Azlwar – Sri Boothath Azhwar.

This is the photo of His avathara sthalam ~ in all probability, you had been in this vicinity, without ever realizing its significance and greatness

~ in case you are not able to identify – for sure you have seen this place and have taken a photo / selfie infront of these magnificent elephants  -   this place was in global news when China’s President Xi Jinping arrived to a lavish welcome in the southern Indian city of Chennai for his second informal summit with Indian Prime Minister on 11.10.2019.  Xi was treated to a performance showcasing the local Tamil traditional dance forms on the runway.  Visiting Chennai for his second informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping opted to travel to tourist town Mamallapuram by road instead of a helicopter as Chinese leaders, as matter of policy, shun travel by choppers.

~  have you had darshan at Thirukkadanmallai (most probably you had visited this place as a tourist); in case, you had darshan, have you travelled to this place with the prime purpose of worshipping Emperuman at this divyadesam  and the Azhwar who was born at this sthalam  ?? Sri Sthalasayana Perumal Thirukovil is at Thirukkadanmallai ~ in case the name does not ring a bell – it is the  more famous  Mahabalipuram (simply Mamallapuram) known for its great architecture.   It is at this divyadesam our Boothathazhwar was born.  Thiruvavathara uthsavam of Bootath Alwar gets celebrated in the month of Aippasi (Oct-Nov).   “Mallai means prosperity. The town got the name because it was enriched by the wealth brought through sea trade”

During the rule of Mahendravarman I, Mahablipuram started to flourish as a centre of art and culture. His patronage helped the creation of a number of the city’s most iconic landmarks. This period of artistic excellence was duly continued by his son Narasimhavarman I  and subsequent Pallava kings. Mahabalipuram was already a thriving sea port on the Bay of Bengal before this time. A significant amount of coins and other artefacts excavated from this region also indicate a pre-existing trade relation with the Romans even before it became a part of the Pallava Empire.   Constructed with formidable finesse by the Great Pallavas in 7th century BC, Mahabalipuram symbolises the confluence of Indian history, geography and ancient Indian economy. Historical relevance of Mahabalipuram dates back to the ancient days of Sangam literature and Bhakti movement that flourished here, eventually contributing to the development of Dravidian architecture in Tamil Nadu.

Today (25.10.2020) – let us fall at the feet of Sri Boothath Azhwar and reach Emperuman by singing His glories and more specifically his prabandham ‘Irandam thiruvanthathi’ part of Iyarpa

Sri Boothathazhwar guides us the easiest way to reach the abode of Sriman Narayana.  He tells us that to have the strong doors of Sri Vaikundam open, one should relinquish other faiths and fall at the feet of that Lord of Thennarangam – Sri Ranganathar.
