Triplicane (anglicized version of
Thiruvallikkeni) is a very ancient place, outdating the history of the State
and Chennai .. .. a street runs from almost Lighthouse MRTS to Pycrofts Street
(Barathiyar Salai) – named Venkatrangam Pillai Street (could not gather any
info on this man after whom the street is named). In the street lies a forlorn building with a
plaque ‘Mandaram Ranganatham’ with address scribbled as 134/128. Some would recall its pristine glory – it was
Vasantha Uthsava Bungalow and had some tenants residing nearby too !! - இந்த

1970களில் நமது திருவல்லிக்கேணி அனுபவிக்க சிறந்த இடமாக இருந்தது. மாட வீதிகளில் அவ்வளவாக வண்டிகள் பயணிக்காது. இந்து உயர்நிலைப்பள்ளி சேர்ந்ததால் பைகிராப்ட்ஸ் சாலையில் பல்லவன் பஸ் வரும் - கவனமாக சாலையை கடக்கவும் என அறிவுரை வழங்குவர். சாமராவ் பள்ளி நாள்களிலிருந்தே - பள்ளி முடிந்து மாலையில் பங்களாவுக்கு கிரிக்கெட் விளையாட செல்வேன். இது துளசிங்க பெருமாள் தெருவில் - மேட்டின் மேல் பெரிய மண்டபமும், நடுவே மேடையும், இரண்டு கோரி எனப்படும் (சென்னை உயர்நீதி மன்றத்தில் உள்ளது போன்ற அமைப்பும்) அக்காலத்தில் இதனுள் நிறைய வௌவ்வால் இருக்கும் / படபடவென பறக்கும் எனவே மேலே தைரியமனாவர்கள் மட்டுமே பிரவேசிப்பார்கள்.

Triplicane of yesteryears was more of long houses stretching literally from one street to another with scores of tenancy huddled together with affection. Slowly most of the buildings bit the dust, giving way to modern apartments, if you can call them. Remember that earliest of flats in Triplicane were 400 / 450 with double bedroom somehow made in 525 SFT .. .. rich lived in own houses and uber rich owned big sprawling bungalows !! (our understanding was big palatial house – maaligai !!). The term “bungalow” has an interesting origin, tracing back to 19th century in the Indian subcontinent. Derived from the Bengali term “bangla”, it initially referred to the Bengali style of rural homes, designed to be practical and airy in a tropical climate. This style was adapted by the British in India and later brought back to the UK, evolving into the bungalows we see today. In essence, the word “bungalow” embodies a fusion of cultural architectural practices, tailored to meet the specific needs of its inhabitants in different environments. This historical blend has given rise to a diverse range of bungalow styles, each maintaining the core principle of single-storey, accessible living.
Triplicane has a rich heritage and history, it figured prominently during the invasion of the Carnatic in 1740
— 1741. In September 1746 when the French Com-
mander La Bourdannais attacked Madras, a body of French troops encamped on the east side of the temple where they quickly threw up an entrenchment for the protection oftheir armaments and stores. In a rough sketch plan of Madras about 1746 the Grand Pagoda of Triplicane the temple tank and the French embankments have all been marked. This plan was taken by Paradis who was sent by Dupleix on a secret visit to Madras in 1743 to prepare a plan of its fortifications and was reproduced by Colonel Davis, vide Love- Vastiges of old Madras Vol. II Page 356.
This is more of a Temple related post than a History related one. Life at a divyadesam is exhilarating ! Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam is replete with uthsavams ~ today is day 5 of Chithirai Brahmothsavam and in some ways needs to be documented as historical as a visit to a particular place happened after two decades !!!! - wonder what it could be !?
Transient is the word that denotes - lasting for only a short
time; temporary. Lightning is transient
! Lightning is an electrical discharge caused by imbalances between storm
clouds and the ground, or within the clouds themselves. Most lightning occurs
within the clouds. In 1600s, Triplicane was a separate village.
After about a century, British found Triplicane to be a good area for
settlement and a large number of people moved there. In 1668, Triplicane was
annexed to the Madras City. In the early
20th century, Triplicane became one of the major residential areas of Madras.
In 1841, Ice House was built to store the ice bars imported from America
through ships. Ice bars were imported to provide the English a temporary relief
from the blistering heat. In mid-19th
century, numerous educational institutions were formed in the area. .. .. ..and in
Thiruvallikkeni, there was this ‘Vasantha Bungalow’ !
~ வசந்தம்
என்பது பருவம். வசந்த ருது எனவும் இளவேனில் எனவும் பெயர் பெற்றது இது. சித்திரை. வைகாசி
இரண்டையும் இளவேனில் என்பார்கள். வசந்தகாலம் எல்லோரும் ஆவலுடன் எதிர்பார்க்கும் பருவம்.
தளிர்க்கும், பூக்கும் தாவரங்கள்,பாடித் திரியும் பறவைகள் என கூர்ந்து நோக்கினால் மகிழ்ச்சியாகவும்,
வியப்பாகவும் இருக்கும் காலம் இது.
வெங்கடரங்கம் பிள்ளை தெருவிலே இருந்தது 'வசந்தோத்சவ பங்களா' .. .. .. சாதாரண நாட்களில் வெளி மனிதர்கள் இங்கே உட்செல்ல முடியாது. பெருமாள் கோடை உத்சவம், வசந்த உத்சவம், பிரம்மோத்சவத்திலே ஐந்தாம் நாள், திருத்தேரன்று இரவு திருமஞ்சனம், விஜயதசமி பார்வேட்டை நாட்களில் புறப்பாடு கண்டு அருளும் அற்புத இடம் இது. கச்சி மடத்து சங்கராச்சாரியார் ஸ்வாமிகள் 70களின் ஆரம்பத்தில் இங்கே சில நாட்கள் தங்கி இருந்தார்.
வாசலில்
இரு மருங்கிலும் அழகாக வெட்டப்பட்ட செடிகள். உள்ளே ஒரு அழகான மண்டபம். சுற்றிலும்
எம்பெருமானின் படங்கள் - நடுவே பெருமாள் இளைப்பாறும் மண்டபம். மண்டபத்தின் வாசலில்
இரு தடாகைகள் - அவற்றில் அல்லி மலர்கள், துள்ளி விளையாடும் மீன்கள், சுற்றிலும் நிழல்
தரும் மரங்கள், நடைபாவி கிணறு என இறங்கி குளிக்கவல்ல கிணறு. பெருமாள் எழுந்து
அருளி இருக்கும்போது - செடிகள் சூழ, கீசு கீசு என்று பறவைகள் ஒலிக்க, ரம்மியமாக கதை
பேசுவது ஆனந்தம். பெருமாள் புறப்பாடு, திருமஞ்சனம் எல்லாமே சிறக்கும்.
நிற்க ~ இவையெல்லாம் இனி அனுபவித்தவர்கள் மனக்கண்ணில் மனதிலும் மட்டுமே இருந்து காலப்போக்கில் மறைந்து விடுமோ என பலர் கவலைப்பட்டனர்.
The reference is to ** Vasantha Uthsava Bungalow ** ~ that beautiful structure where Emperuman took rest was demolished and razed to ground. Remember that many decades ago, Sri Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi, the 68th peedathipathi of Kanchi Shankara mutt on his pattna pravesam stayed here for a month or so !
Spring is a season. We have seasons because the earth takes a year to move round the sun, which gives us light and warmth, and because the earth tilts at an angle of 23.5 degrees. Spring is the season of new beginnings. Fresh buds bloom, animals awaken and the earth seems to come to life again. Farmers and gardeners plant their seeds and temperatures slowly rise. The timing of these changes varies depending upon location. What most people call spring relies on the astronomical definition of the word. Spring is generally considered the period between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), spring is one of two times when the Earth's axis is not pointed toward or away from the sun.
Spring is also the time for Vasantha Uthsavam. But for Covid 19 stoppage and Temples remaining closed, Vasanthothsavam would happen everywhere and Perumal would have purappadu to Vasantha uthsava bungalow in Venkatrangam street. It would amaze one to understand the significance of each Uthsavam and the care with which our elders have designed them. There are palaces [bungalows] specially built for providing rest to Perumal on different occasions ~ at Thiruvallikkeni, there is Thavana Uthsava Bungalow situated in Thulasinga Perumal Koil Street, Komutti Bungalow in Peyalwar Koil Street and the much grandeur VAsantha Uthsava bungalow as in Venkatrangam (Pillai) Street. It was indeed big spacious sprawling pleasant premises, replete with flower plants, little ponds, trees, a big well with steps for walking inside. During Vasantha Uthsavam Sri Parthasarathi would arrive here in the morning, have thirumanjanam, ul-purappadu and then return late in the evening. Besides He would visit for Kodai Uthsavam, Vijayadasami, 5th day and 7th day of Brahmothsavam [of Sri Parthasarathi and Sri Azhagiya Singar]
Vasantham as a Season and seven day purappadu one can easily comprehend – but Bungalow ! Bungalows were first built in the South Asian region of Bengal. Bungalows, which derive their name from Hindi, were first identified as such by British sailors of the East India Company in the late 17th century. As time progressed, a bungalow came to refer to a large dwelling, often representing high social status in both Britain and America.
By some definition, a bungalow is a one-story house, cottage or cabin. Bungalows are generally small in terms of square footage, but it is not uncommon to see very large bungalows. They are small and easy to maintain and are therefore great homes for the elderly or those wishing rest. They also afford more privacy than most traditional homes, as they're low to the ground and the windows can easily be blocked by trees, shrubs, and fences. .. .. but our general reference to bungalow is a sprawling premises with lot of greenery, fruit bearing trees, flowers and more.
The style caught up in UK and in 1869 English architect, John Taylor, built one at Westgate-on-Sea, Kent in 1869. Taylor himself adopted the term once it had become a bankable brand, championed by one of the most eminent physicians of the day, Professor Erasmus Wilson. After purchasing the first four of Taylor’s bungalows himself, Wilson wrote to him “The idea of Bungalows seems to take people’s minds immensely. They are novel, quaint, pretty and perfect as to sanitary qualities. The best sanitary home for a family is a Bungalow”. Bungalows became popular in the UK between the two World Wars and very large numbers were built, particularly in coastal resorts.
In our
National capital, Lutyens Bungalow Zone or LBZ is the area spread over
2,800-hectare area in Lutyens' Delhi, with bungalows (houses) for government
ministers, officials and their administrative offices, since the British Raj.
The zone stretches up to Lodhi Road in the south. Lutyens' Delhi is an
area named after the British architect Sir Edwin
Lutyens who was responsible for much of the architectural design and
building during the period of the British Raj. Lutyens,
designed 4 bungalows in the Rashtrapati Bhavan Estate.
Getting back, a book of 1948 [History of
Triplicane & the temple of Sri Parthasarathi Swami – compiled by Rao
Bahadur V Ranganadham Chetty, Dharmakartha Triplicane – published in 1946] states that in the month of Vaikasi,
Vasanthothsavam is celebrated for 7 days ending with suddha Dasami
at the Vasantha Utsava Bungalow in Venkatrangam Pillai Street. This Bungalow
and the garden attached to it is endowed by one Addyanki Varadappa Chetty garu
of great reputation. The income of the garden and of the surrounding buildings
are to be utilised for meeting the charges for the said festivals. One Sri
Mandaram Ranganadham Chetty garu is now managing the said trust and there are
also independant Ubhayakars for all the seven days.
The speciality or the unique feature of this festival is that the Ubhaya Nachimars or Bhogalakshmis are placed in separate Thotty from Sri Parthasarathi Swami Utchavar and taken to the said garden in the evening before sun-set through Mada streets and North Tank Square. Separate Unjals are provided for Ubhaya Nachimars and Sri Parthasarathi Swami; Lali or lullaby songs of praise are sung by Deva Dasip and music is played with Lali songs. The jewels on the deities are removed and taken to the temple; and the God flower-bedecked is taken back to the temple in the night with torches and blue lights, without any jewels through the premises No. 41, East Tank Square and returnd to the temple. The last day festival is celebrated from the funds contributed by the Trustees of Pappichetty Raghaviah's Chettys' charities.
In my younger days, have accompanied Perumal to the bungalow and have come for the thirumbukal purappadu also. Remember those beautiful ponds, the nadabavi kinaru, the trees, shrubs, flowers, fishes in the pond and more. Sadly in the year 2004, after Samprokshanam, when Perumal was to visit here on the 4th day, it was found that the promenade deck had been razed to the ground and a pandal erected. On the 7th day of the Uthsavam ~ kuthirai vahana purappadu, Sri Parthasarathi did not go inside the bungalow and sadly never after that. In subsequent years Vasantha uthsavam was simply - ‘ mada veedhi’ purappadu.
The property owners were
keen on promoting the property for apartments leaving some portion for the
Perumal; a couple of years later, they constructed one mantap with entrance in
TP Koil 2nd lane. Meantime, there was litigation on the property between those
claiming to be owners and Temple authorities. Without
going into the merits of the case, it is sad for all Bakthas that the beautiful
sprawling premises where Sri Parthasarathi and Sri Azhagiya Singar visited is
no longer there and the grand Vasantha uthsavam got stopped. Perhaps with the property owned and the rich
contributions to the Temple, Authorities
could easily have constructed another
mantap – may be at the erstwhile premises where Post office functioned at Big
Street, have a beautiful mantap, surrounded by fragrant trees aka Nandavanam
and conduct Vasantha Uthsavam – there were options but none were explored.

ReplyDeleteI lived in Thiruvallikeni (Triplicane) until I was 35, and now at 70, many memories of that bungalow remain vivid, though some are mixed. In the early 1960s, we never missed the darshan of Lord Parthasarathy during the Vasantha Utsavam held at the bungalow. There were one or two Mahizhambu trees, from which I used to collect flowers for my mother. The property had two ponds, and a marriage of my maternal relatives was held there. If I recall correctly, Mahaperiva visited the bungalow, though I am unsure if he stayed. He campaigned the likhitha japa of Sri Ram’s naamaa—the written name papers were collected and placed in front of the Swami Parthasarathy temple, where a stupi-like structure was erected which now exists as it was.
