Celebrating the birth of Sri Rama ~ Sree Rama Navami 2024:

Celebrating the birth of Sri Rama ~ Sree Rama Navami 2024

Today is Sree Rama Navami, the birth day of Bhagwan Sree Ramachandra Murthi.  Rāmāyaṇa is the first poem (Ādi Kāvya) in the world,  composed eons ago, adapted by people speaking multiple languages. It is handed down from generation to generation orally and through written versions on palm leaves. Bhagawān, Ṛishi and self-realized Vālmeeki,  gave us  the entire life-story of Rāma, in  enchanting narrative.

This earth, in all its entirety and fullness has been under the care of many successful kings starting from Prajāpati. This glorious ithihasa purana  known as Rāmāyaṇa emerged from the descendants of the dynasty of great king Ikshwāku.  The mighty King Dasaratha conducted yagna for begetting progeny.  Six seasons after completion of the Yajña, on the  twelfth month after completion, on the ninth day of the Caitra month, when the five planets were in high position, as the Moon and Bṛihaspati were rising along with the star (Punarvasu) that was presided over by Aditi in the Karkātaka Lagna, Kousalyā gave birth to a son by name Rāma, who would enhance the stature and reputation of the Ikshwāku dynasty, with auspicious features, boding splendid fortunes, endowed with half as many aspects, qualities and powers of  Emperuman Sriman Narayana.

Sage Valmiki in his Ramakavya describes the moment of birth as :  at that  moment, Gandharvas sang melodiously, Apsaras danced with joy, celestial drums were sounded, flowers showered from the sky. Ayōdhyā became festive with people moving all around. Major pathways were clogged with boisterous crowds entertained by singers, musicians, dancers, actors and the like.  After eleven days passed, Vasishṭha performed the naming ceremony for the new borns with delight.

He named the great eldest son as Rāma, the son of Kaikēyee as Bharata and the sons of Sumitrā as Lakshmaṇa and Ṡatrughna.  All of them learned the Vēdas and became knowledgeable in all subjects. They were endowed with all the desirable qualities. They learned to share with everyone and care about everybody.  Those tigers among men were earnestly and equally interested in the study of Vēdas and in learning the skill of archery and in seeking and following the guidance of their parents.

Today (17th Apr 2024)  is the holy day of Sree Rama Navami – the day on which Lord Sri Ramachandramurthy,  the supreme avatar of Maryada Purush  was born in the blessed land of Ayodhya.  Lord Rama descended on earth for the purpose of upholding righteousness and rewarding virtue.

There is only one by name Sri Rama, born in the lineage of Ikshwaku.  He is totally balanced, one in complete control of His words, thoughts and deeds; a man of great valour ~ a person of steadfast character and radiant countenance – Lord Sree Rama

The Greatest of Ithihasa purana ‘Sri Ramayanam’  is the undiluted history of the Greatest Person who descended on this Universe, on the banks of river Sarayu, in a prosperous country called ‘Koshala’.  In the immortal Ramayana, there are learning of life ….. For the Universe, Sri Rama and Sita are the Ideal persons.  Sri Rama is all pervading principle of Truth, character, steadfastness, sincerity, valour, skill, correctness, just, compassionate, righteous and more.

beautiful kolam by Janaki

Anna Nadai 2024

Thiruvallikkeni Sree Ramapiran Hamsa vahanam thirumbukal 2024

Sree Ramar Hamsa vahanam 7 - 2024 :

Sanskrit literature’s most resonant bird image perhaps is “Hamsa’ – a bird that  can separate milk and water.  The hamsa is used as a reference in poetry for anyone that has the discrimination or purity.   The Isavasya states that Brahman who has created this prapancham and pervades it is seated in the hearts of all beings out of His unlimited greatness and compassion.   The reference to the bird ‘hamsa,’   is perhaps symbolic of the high degree of viveka or discrimination that characterises a jnani. In this supreme yogic state, a realised soul is never confused about the real and the unreal. He transcends all misunderstanding and is freed from worldly bonds and obligations, has no likes or dislikes, has no needs and is steeped in God realisation.

For us life is simple – surrender to Sriman Narayana – lockdown and being at home presented ample opportunities to be with near and dears, do what one likes, read our religious scriptures and devote time for Emperuman.  In the city of Ayodhya, all celebrated when  4 Princes were born at the same time to King Dasaratha.  Among all of them, Rāma stood out with his supreme radiance and true valour. He endeared himself to everyone like a spotless moon. Being radiant like the Sun and endearing like the Moon is a rare combination.  Sage Valmiki says : -

The Moon is so pleasing to everyone, in spite of spots and smears on his face. Imagine how nice and more pleasing the Moon would be, sans those spots and smears? That is what Rāma was, to beholders.

Sree Rama is often referred as ‘son of Kausalya’ .. signifying not only His mother Kousayla, but also the kingdom of Kosala and also would refer to his virtues.  Sri Rama is praised for His valour and expertise in archery …. and the bow has another mighty reference too……… Sage Vishwamitra takes to the Mithila Kingdom,  where he breaks the Siva dhanush for marrying Sita devi.   Atop Hamsa Vahanam, Sree Rama even when  holding armoury of  bow and arrow exhibited compassion and serenity for His devotees.

Swans are birds of the family Anatidae within the genus Cygnus.  The swans' closest relatives include the geese and ducks.  There are six living and many extinct species of swan; in addition, there is a species known as the coscoroba swan which is no longer considered one of the true swans.  The hamsa  is an aquatic migratory bird,  referred to in ancient Sanskrit texts which various scholars have interpreted as being based on the goose, the swan,  or even the flamingo.   Bird Hamsa is the vahana of Brahma, Gayatri, Saraswati, and Vishvakarma.

Jean Vogel, in 1952, questioned if hamsa is indeed a swan, as  Dutch ornithologists George Junge and E.D. van Oort he consulted, swans were rare in modern India while bar-headed geese (Anser indicus) were common. According to Vogel, Western and Indian scholars may have preferred translating hamsa from Sanskrit to swan as the indigenous goose appears plump while the swan (and, Vogel adds, the flamingo) appears more graceful.   However, some Ornithologists have criticized Vogel's view as being over-reliant on artistic representations from south India and Sri Lanka, where the white swan is rare.  American ornithologist Paul Johnsgard, in 2010, stated that mute swans (Cygnus Olor) do migrate to the northwestern Himalayan region of India every winter, migrating some 1000 miles each way.   The mute swan (Cygnus olor) is a species of swan and a member of the waterfowl family Anatidae. It is native to much of Eurosiberia, and (as a rare winter visitor) the far north of Africa.  The name 'mute' derives from it being less vocal than other swan species.  Measuring 125 to 170 cm (49 to 67 in) in length, this large swan is wholly white in plumage with an orange beak bordered with black.  It is recognisable by its pronounced knob atop the beak, which is larger in males.

சீதை தன் நடையை நோக்கி, சிறியது ஓர் முறுவல் செய்தான்;

The grand Sree Navami Uthsavam gives us opportunity to recreate the celebrations of the birth of Maryadha Purush Sree Rama.  Today on 15.4.2024,  it was day 7 and Sri Rama had purappadu astride ‘Hamsa vahanam’.    Here are some photos taken during the purappadu whence ‘siriya Thirumadal’ and ‘Periya thirumadal’ were  rendered.
