Thirumylai Karpagambal Navarathiri darshan 2026

Thirumylai Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple is an iconic,  very famous ancient temple of Lord Shiva and His consort  Parvathi reverred here as Karpagambal.  The temple's sthala puranam mentions Goddess Uma taking the form of a peahen and worshipping Lord Shiva at Mylapore.  During Navaratri, worship of Karpagambal brings the focus to the Divine Mother. The festival's changing forms of the Goddess provide an opportunity to reflect on the many aspects of Shakti—compassion, wisdom, courage and protection. It is  an architectural masterpiece

The temple is   a Paadal Petra Sthalam and is celebrated in the ancient 7th-century Thevaram hymns by the revered Saivite saints Saint Sambandar and Appar.  The temple was built by Pallava Dynasty in the 7th century CE near the seashore. After its destruction by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century (where the San Thome Basilica now stands), the temple was reconstructed about 1 km inland at its current location by the Vijayanagara Kings. Thirugnanasambandar‘s   6th song in Poompavaipathikam and Arunagirinathar‘s 697th song in Thirumylai Thirupugazh, have  references   to the Kapaleeswarar temple being located by a seashore.

The most famous festival of the temple is the Arupathimoovar festival, named after the sixty-three Nayanmars who have attained salvation. All sixty-three Nayanmar are taken out in procession.
