Aippaisi Revathi ~ Pournami purappadu 2026 !

Moon has enamoured mankind since centuries !  -  Today 25th Oct 2026 is REvathi – every REvathi there would be Sri Ranganathar purappadu But today is Pournami too and hence there was siriya mada veethi purappadu for Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman.  Pournami is Full Moon but there is no visibility in Triplicane due to dark rain clouds.   To us it is Pournami and Amavasai – to the Western world the phases of moon are far more elaborate.

Web searches would indicate that the  October full moon is traditionally called the Hunter’s Moon in Northern hemisphere. It is the full moon following September’s Harvest Moon. Historically, it was associated with hunting and preserving meat in preparation for winter. Other traditional names include the Falling Leaves Moon and the Freezing Moon.  The exact astronomical full moon occurs on 26 October 2026 at 04:11 UTC.  So to us in India  that would be   9:41 a.m., 26 October

In the Northern Hemisphere,  around this time, fields are  cleared of much of their crops, leaving fewer places for wild animals to hide. Deer and other animals  had fed through the warmer months and were important sources of food.  A bright Moon rising around sunset gave hunters additional light to find and track animals.  Before modern refrigeration, hunting and preserving meat were important ways of preparing for the colder months.

However today’s moon is not rare.  It is the regular October full moon, and it is not a Supermoon.  Now for better understanding, though described as Northern Hemisphere, it is not correct.  NH includes   India, Europe, North America and many other regions. But their climates, agricultural cycles and cultural traditions differ considerably.  The Hunter’s Moon is rooted mainly in European and North American seasonal traditions. It is the traditional English-language name for the full moon following the Harvest Moon, associated historically with autumn hunting and preparation for winter in European and North American contexts.

For us back at home, today   is a particularly auspicious full-moon occasion in the Hindu calendar — Sharad Purnima, also known as Kojagari Purnima or Raas Purnima.   According to the devotional tradition of Vrindavan, this full-moon night is associated with Maha Raas Leela, the divine dance of Lord Krishna with the gopis. The brilliant moon symbolises the beauty, joy and spiritual completeness of this divine episode.
