Jhandewalan Hanuman temple, Delhi

Jai Hanuman

Renowned for its 108-feet-tall Hanuman statue in Delhi, the Jhandewalan Hanuman Temple   is significant among the revered shrines in the capital city. Jhandewalan Hanuman Temple  is located closer to Jhandewalan metro - right above the raised metro line between Karol Bagh and Jhandewalan Metro Stations.

The temple dedicated  to Lord Hanuman,  took nearly 13 years to be constructed, becoming a remarkable landmark.  An intriguing feature of the temple is its entrance, designed to resemble the gaping mouth of a demoness, perhaps symbolizing the demons vanquished by Lord Hanuman throughout his life, more specifically during his visit to Lanka over the Sea.

Srinivasa Thiruvengadamudaiyaai .. .. Hamsaanandi

Today is Karthigai Thiruvonam – at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam after Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman siriya mada veethi purappadu, during Thiruvanthikappu there was this excellent rendition of a Carnatic song by Nagaraj in Nadaswaram and Sai Shanmuganathan in Thavil.  Here is a short video. :  https://youtu.be/pxbl07JxzTY

Oh, Srinivasa (Dwelling place of Lakshmi), lord of auscpicious Thiruvenkadam (Ezhumalai), Victory to you, Oh Govinda (friend of cows), Oh, Mukunda (liberator), Oh Endless One. You earned the fame as the refuge of the meek, where have you seen one more meek than me?

Oh, lord of the seven hills, one who is praised by the whole universe, Illusory one, Oh, husband of AlarmElmangai; Oh, lord of the Universe, wielder of the wheel and the conch. I seek the refuge of your feet, free me from fear!

It is a beautiful keerthanai by Sri Papanasam Sivan fondly addressed as Tamil Thiyagayya was a famous composer who lived in last century (1890 – 1973).  He was conferred Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1971.  He also composed music in Kannada and Tamil cinema in early stages of movies.  Blessed with long life, he lived like a wandering mystic, enriching the repertoire of classical music by his priceless compositions. As a child he was known as Ramayya. Since he was an ardent devotee of Lord Siva, and since he used to sing Bhajans in praise of Lord Siva especially in Papanasam, he came to be known as Papanasam Sivan. He was a prolific writer giving us around 500 kritis, excluding the film songs. The title  ‘Tamil Tyagayya’ was conferred on him by the great Simizhi Sundaram Iyer, when he heard Sivan singing the song ‘Unnai Thudikka Arulthaa’ in Kuntalavarali raga during the Tyagaraja Rathotsavam at Tiruvarur. The bulk of Sivan’s compositions are in Tamil, his mother tongue. He has also composed some kritis in Sanskrit

Hamsanandi is a prominent, hexatonic (six-note) janya raga (derived scale) in Carnatic music, known for its meditative, intense, and joyful mood. It is a relatively new but popular raga, often sung in the evenings, and sets a mood of yearning and fervent appeal due to the absence of the panchamam (Pa) note.  Hamsanandi is an evening rāgam

Web searches reveal there are many popular Cinema songs of various composers on this raag.  Here are some: -

Papanasam Sivan, was born  90 in Polagam, a village in Tanjore District, as the second son of Ramamritha Iyer and Yogmbal. His early years were spent in Travancore where he learnt Malayalam and obtained a degree in grammar from Maharaja Sanskrit College. He first learnt  from Noorani Mahadeva Bhagavatar, son of Parameswara Bhagavatar. Later, he became the disciple of Konerirajapuram Vaidyanatha Ayyar, a well-known musician.  His elder brother P Rajagopala Iyer’s daughter was VN Janaki, who became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1988 albeit for a very brief period.

DHARMA DHWAJAROHAN AT AYODHYA SREE RAM MANDIR

DHARMA DHWAJAROHAN AT AYODHYA SREE RAM MANDIR

The Ramcharitmanas, literally "Lake of the deeds of Rama",  is an epic poem in the Awadhi language, composed by the 16th-century Indian poet-saint Tulsidas. It is a retelling of the Sanskrit epic Ramayana by Valmiki and is considered one of the greatest works of Hindu literature. Ramcharitmansa  begins thus: -

"Shantam Shasvatamaprameyamanaghanam nirvanashantipradam

brahmashambhuphaneendrasevyamanisham vedantavedyam vibhum,

Ramakhayam jagadishvaram suragurum mayamanusyamharim

vandeaham karunakaram raghuvaram bhupalachunamanim."

I adore the Lord of the universe bearing the name of Rama, the Chief of Raghu’s line and the crest-jewel of kings, the mine of compassion, the dispeller of all sins, appearing in human form through His Maya (deluding potency), the greatest of all gods, knowable through Vedanta (the Upanishads),constantly worshiped by Brahma (the Creator), Sambhu (Lord Shiva) and Sesha (the serpent-god), the bestower of supreme peace in the form of final beatitude, placid, eternal, beyond the ordinary means of cognition, sinless and all-pervading.(1)

This earth, in all its entirety and fullness has been under the care of many successful kings starting from Prajāpati. This glorious ithihasa purana  known as Rāmāyaa emerged from the descendants of the dynasty of great king Ikshwāku.  The mighty King Dasaratha conducted yagna for begetting progeny.  Six seasons after completion of the Yajña, on the  twelfth month after completion, on the ninth day of the Caitra month, when the five planets were in high position,   Kousalyā gave birth to a son by name Rāma, who would enhance the stature and reputation of the Ikshwāku dynasty, with auspicious features, boding splendid fortunes, endowed with half as many aspects, qualities and powers of  Emperuman Sriman Narayana.

The  Ghaghara River, also known as the Karnali River  is River Sarayu !!    largest tributary of the Ganges by volume and the second largest by length after Yamuna.   Lower Ghaghara is popularly known as Sarayu in India, especially while it flows through the city of Ayodhya.  Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama, is situated on the banks of the river Sarayu.  The Sarayu river   symbolizes spiritual merit, purification, and liberation.  After centuries of dispute and court cases – now stands a very majestic temple at the very place where Sree Ramapiran was born – the Rama Janmabhoomi.  There is only one by name Sri Rama, born in the lineage of Ikshwaku.  He is totally balanced, one in complete control of His words, thoughts and deeds; a man of great valour ~ a person of steadfast character and radiant countenance – Lord Sree Rama

On that glorious auspicious day - 22.1.2024 – the Nation rejoiced    the Prana pratishta of Sri Rama in the architecturally ornate  beautiful Temple at His Janmasthan.   The most sacred ceremony, marking the consecration of the deity within the temple, was a historic event that carried profound cultural and symbolic importance. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji   presides over the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, officiated by a team of priests led by Lakshmikant Dixit.

Today  25.11.2025 is another remarkably significant day – conclusion of the wait of centuries, in between betrayal of some parties for few decades the Temple now stands majestic and today   DHARMA DHWAJ adorns the spire of the beautiful ornate Mandir at Ayodhya -  a symbol of unity, culture & civilizational resurgence. Ayodhya is glowing. Bharat is proud.   Jai Shri Ram!  the saffron flag flies high on the grand temple. This is the victory of every devotee

Historic 'Dhwajarohan' At Ayodhya Ram Mandir happened today. Honble PM Shri Narendra Modiji hoisted the flag marking the completion of  Temple's Construction.    Dharma Dhwaj, measuring 10 feet in height & 20 feet in length, bears image of radiant S un symbolizing brilliance & valour of Prabhu Shri Ram, with ‘Om’ inscribed on it along with image of. The ceremony is being held on auspicious Panchami of Shukla Paksha in Margashirsha month, coinciding with Abhijit Muhurat of Lord Ram and Maa Sita's Vivah-Panchami.

From today a very majestic ceremonial flag is fluttering    on the spire of the sacred Ram Mandir   symbolising the completion of the temple's construction.  The auspicious time for the flag hoisting was  between 11:58 AM and 12:30 PM, and dignitaries including Governor of Uttar Pradesh Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat and others  were inside the temple complex.  The Dhwajarohan at Ram Janmbhoomi Temple ushers  in a new chapter of cultural celebration and national unity, said a statement issued by the Prime Minister's office.

The specially designed right-angled triangular flag, measuring 10 feet in height and 22 feet in length, has been crafted by a parachute specialist from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It weighs between two and three kilograms and has been engineered to suit the 161-foot-high temple summit and the 42-foot flagpole. It bears the image of a radiant Sun symbolising the brilliance and valour of Bhagwan Shri Ram, with an 'Om' inscribed on it along with image of Kovidara tree. The sacred saffron flag will convey a message of dignity, unity, and cultural continuity, embodying the ideals of Ram Rajya.

The flag will rise atop a Shikhar constructed in the traditional North Indian Nagara architectural style, while the surrounding 800-metre Parkota, a circumambulatory enclosure built around the temple, designed in the South Indian architectural tradition, showcases the temple's architectural diversity, the PMO mentioned. The temple complex features 87 intricately carved stone episodes from the life of Bhagwan Shri Ram based on the Valmiki Ramayana on the outer walls of the main temple, and 79 bronze-cast episodes from Indian culture placed along the enclosure walls. Together, these elements provide a meaningful and educational experience to all visitors, offering deep insight into Lord Ram's life and the cultural heritage of India.

Jai Shree Ram.

Lights, Devotion and Ekadasi (Aippaisi Shuklapaksha Ekadasi) 2025

Ekadasi is an all important day ~    today 16.11.2025 is Vishwavasu Dakshinayaya, Sarath ruthow, Thula Masa (Aippaisi),   Krishna Paksha Ekadasi.  On days of Ekadasi – fasting, worshipping Sriman Narayana and listening to religious discourses are all valued.  Upavavasa could mean ‘remaining by the side of the Lord’ – and on these days, we should eat only food that is offered to Perumal, medidate, recite and think of Sriman Narayana all the time.

Vilakku is lamps and all about lighting ! – producing light.  Light, visible light, or visible radiation is electromagnetic radiation that can be perceived by the human eye.  Visible light spans the visible spectrum.  In physics, the term "light" may refer more broadly to electromagnetic radiation of any wavelength, whether visible or not.

The most important source of light is the Sun and perhaps the most underappreciated use of this abundant light is architecture designed to take advantage of  it. One of the most well known examples of historical architecture utilizing daylight through its design is the Pantheon. Perhaps the most significant architectural achievement from the Roman Empire, the Pantheon is designed almost entirely around the open air circle at the top of its dome.  According to the Illuminating Engineering Society, “the first attempt at man-made lighting occurred about 70,000 years ago. The first lamp was invented made of a  shell, hollowed-out rock, or other similar non-flammable object which was filled with a combustible material (probably dried grass or wood), sprinkled with animal fat (the original lighter fluid) and ignited.”

The history of light began with natural light, but as humans developed artificial light, it progressed from fire and torches to oil lamps and candles, then advanced to gas lighting, followed by the revolutionary electric incandescent bulb. The understanding of light's nature evolved from ancient theories about emanations from the eye to complex physics, including the understanding of its dual wave-particle nature in the 20th century. Modern advancements have introduced more energy-efficient technologies like fluorescent and LED lighting, which have now  phased out incandescent bulbs.

The electric light, one of the everyday conveniences that most affects our lives, was not “invented” in the traditional sense in 1879 by Thomas Alva Edison, although he could be said to have created the first commercially practical incandescent light. He was neither the first nor the only person trying to invent an incandescent light bulb. In fact, some historians claim there were over 20 inventors of incandescent lamps prior to Edison’s version. However, Edison is often credited with the invention because his version was able to outstrip the earlier versions because of a combination of three factors: an effective incandescent material, a higher vacuum than others were able to achieve and a high resistance that made power distribution from a centralized source economically viable.

Temple of Sri Vakula Matha at Peruru, Tirupathi

Of the  divyadesams sung by Azhwaargal, the holy Seven Hills -  Thirumala Thirupathi occupies a very pre-eminent position.  Our Acharyan Emperumanaar (Udayavar, Ramanujar, Bashyakarar……….) did many service to the Lord here and Udayavar was instrumental in many of the religious practices being established in Thirumala.

Devotees generally have darshan of Ammavaru (Padmavathi Thayar) at Thiruchanoor and Sri Govindaraja Perumal (Kizh Thirupathi) before ascending the holy hills. This time our family after worshipping at Alarmelmangapuram, proceeded to Srinivasa Mangapuram for worshipping Sri Kalyana Venkateswara Swami (manifestation of Thiruvengadamudaiyan Srinivasar).  Temple legend has it that after the celestial marriage with Goddess Padmavathi, Lord Venkateswara visited the ashram of Agasthya here and stayed here for six months.

As everyone would know, thousands daily ascend holy Thirumala through Alipiri – there is another sacred pathway leading to the temple – ‘Srivari Mettu’ near Srinivasa Mangapuram, cherished as Sopanamarga, a stone footpath steeped in history and spiritual significance.  This path is steeper and has lesser amenities but with 2.1 km lon and approx 2388 steps, is considerably shorter than the Alipiri route.

From Alarmelmangapuram, we will take a right turn towards Tirupathi, but for going to Srivarimettu / Srinivasa Mangapuram, travel by the side of the bridge on the road leading to Chittoor / Madanapalle / Chandragiri .. .. .. and on our way near Peruru, saw a glittering temple atop a hillock, (we have not had darshan here thus far)

Peruru (పేరూరు) is a small village in Tirupati (rural) in Chittoor Dist in Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh situated at an elevation of 150 M above sea level.  Its Telephone Code / Std Code is : 0877 - Pin Code : 517505; Post Office Name : Perumallapalle  - on way to Chandragiri.

Chandragiri is a suburb and outgrowth,  a part of Tirupati urban agglomeration and a major growing residential area in Tirupati.  Chandragiri is the southwestern entrance of Tirupati for vehicles coming from Bangalore, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.  There is a famous historical fort at Chandragiri.    The fort, with its rectangular bastions and steep moat, was built during the reign of Immadi Narasimha Yadavaraya (1000 AD), who ruled from Narayanavanam. It is associated with the Vijayanagara Emperors. Kapilendra Deva captured it in 1460 CE.

Chandragiri was under the Vijayanagara empire for about three centuries and came under the control of the Vijayanagara emperors in 1367. It became prominent in the 1560s in the reign of Saluva Narasimha Deva Raya. Later the Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya stayed they're before his coronation at Penukonda. It is also said that he met his future queen Chinna Devi at this fort. Chandragiri was the 4th capital of Vijayanagara Empire, The capital moved there when the Golconda sultans attacked Penukonda.

There are many legends derived from  Venkatachala Mahatmya and the Varaha Purana, detailing the manifestation of the Lord Srinivasa  at Tirumala. According to the Varaha Purana, Adi Varaha first manifested   on the western bank of the Swami Pushkarini (Koneru, the temple tank), while Sriman Narayana  in the form of Venkateswara came in to reside on the southern bank of the Swami Pushkarini.

During the Dwaparayuga,  in a duel - Vayudeva (the Wind God) and Adi Sesha came to terms.  Adisesha   encircled the Ananda hill, an off-shoot of the Meru Mountain on its northern side, while Vayudeva blew  hard to dislodge the Ananda hill from Adisesha's strangle hold. The contest waxed furiously, and as the World trembled, Brahma, Indra and the other deities prevailed upon Adisesha to yield victory to Vayudeva for the welfare of the world, as a whole. Obliging them, Adisesha released his hold on the hill, with the result, Adisesha and the Ananda hill were together blown away to the banks of the river Swarnamukhi. As Adisesha was crestfallen over his defeat, Lord Brahma and the others appeased him by saying that he would be integrated with the hill Venkatadri and would become the abode of Sriman Narayana. Adisesha then metamorphosed into the vast Seshadri hill range, while his hood manifested itself into Venkatadri, the abode of Lord Sri Venkateswara, his trunk portion turned out to be Ahobila supporting Lord Narasimha and his tail housing Srisailam bearing Lord Mallikarjuna.

In His innumerable vibutis leading to many avatars, Sriman Narayana, took an ant-hill on Venkatadri under a tamarind tree as a dwelling place, besides a Pushkarini.  The Chola king sent the cow and its calf to graze on the Venkata Hill along with his herd of other cattle, was to discover that the holy cow everyday emptied her udder into the ant-hill and thus fed the Lord.    In course of time, the King was reborn as Akhasa Raja – in pursuit of child conducted yagna, and as he ploughing the fields, he found a baby in a lotus flower and named her Alarmel mangai (Lady born in Lotus petals) and adopted her as his daughter. Sriman Narayana  reincarnated as Srinivasa (after penance in the ant-hill) as the son of an elderly woman-saint Vakula Malika Devi. Vakula Devi was Yasoda in her previous birth, Lord Krishna's foster-mother and was unhappy in that life for not seeing his marriage. As per the boon received from Krishna, she was reborn as Vagula Devi and enjoyed the rare spectacle of witnessing the celestial wedding of the divine couple.

Vakula devi left her hermitage to approach Akasa Raja with the marriage proposal of marriage between Lord Srinivasa and Padmavathi. In the mean time, an anxious Lord Srinivasa came to the city in the disguise of a lady fortune-teller. The overjoyed king gleefully agreed and his advisor Bhrihaspati wrote the invitation for the wedding between the two celestial beings of Srinivasa and Padmavathi.  A very grand celestial wedding  matching His stature of  the Supreme Lord of the Universe occurred.

We also worship Vagula Malika aka Vakula Devi in the square platform inside the sanctum of Srivari Temple at Holy Thirumala – as Madapalli Nachiyar.  At Peruru, on way to Chandragiri, is a beautiful temple dedicated to Vakula Matha. The Sri Vakulamatha Temple in Tirupati is  located on a hillock in Peruru, about 8 km from the city. The temple is strategically built so that the goddess's face is directed towards the Tirumala hills, where her son resides, and it is considered a customary practice to visit this temple before the main Tirumala temple. The temple was recently renovated, and its administration is managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).  The temple has a small, three-tiered gopuram which has been gold-plated. There are also resting spots, a sacred tank (pushkarani), and a kitchen that serves prasadam to visitors.

It is stated that this temple is not new but is an ancient one, renovated in recent times by TTD.  This place too suffered the wrath of invaders Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan who invaded Chandragiri and plundered places.

Vyāsatīrtha (c. 1460 – c. 1539) also called Vyasaraja or Chandrikacharya, a great philosopher, scholar, polemicist, commentator and poet belonging to the Madhwacharya's Dvaita order of Vedanta lived here.  He was the Rajaguru of Vijayanagara Empire to King Saluva Narasimha Deva Raya and in the court of Narasimha Raya II, during  golden age in Dvaita which saw new developments in dialectical thought, growth of the Haridasa literature under bards like Purandara Dasa and Kanaka Dasa and an increased spread of Dvaita across the subcontinent. He himself composed many kīrtanas in Kannada and Sanskrit.

Chandragiri was also the site of the pact granting lands for Fort St. George to the British was signed by Vijayanagara King Sriranga Raya during August 1639.

The first two photos were taken by me from the main road – rest photos taken from the FB page of the temple.   A trip to Thirumala is complete only with darshan of Adhi Varaha swami at Koneri, Alarmelmangapuram and Kizh Thirupathi – then there are more places – Srinivasa Mangapuram and more.  I have not had darshan at this Vagula Matha temple thus far and pray Emperuman to have darshan here sooner.
