Oceans ! ~ the vast bodies of water surrounding the continents are critical to humankind. Heard of epipelagic zone ?
Our own Triplicane is on the shores of a mighty Ocean – the Bay of Bengal. An Ocean is a continuous body of saltwater that covers more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface. Ocean currents govern the world's weather and churn a kaleidoscope of life. Humans depend on these teeming waters for comfort and survival, but global warming and overfishing threaten to leave the ocean agitated and empty. Geographers divide the ocean into five major basins: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern. Smaller ocean regions such as the Mediterranean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and the Bay of Bengal are called seas, gulfs, and bays. Inland bodies of saltwater such as the Caspian Sea and the Great Salt Lake are distinct from the world's oceans.
The ocean is the body of salt water that covers approximately 70.8% of Earth. In English, the term ocean also refers to any of the large bodies of water into which the world ocean is conventionally divided. The ocean contains 97% of Earth's water and is the primary component of Earth's hydrosphere and is thereby essential to life on Earth. The ocean influences climate and weather patterns, the carbon cycle, and the water cycle by acting as a huge heat reservoir.
The early Earth was formed through the accretion of various materials, and that a period of melting and intense volcanic activity followed. The materials that accreted on the early Earth contained the components that would eventually become our oceans and atmosphere. There are a few hypotheses concerning the origin of the oceans. Most scientists agree that the atmosphere and the ocean accumulated gradually over millions and millions of years with the continual 'degassing' of the Earth's interior. According to this theory, the ocean formed from the escape of water vapour and other gases from the molten rocks of the Earth to the atmosphere surrounding the cooling planet.
After the Earth's surface had cooled to a temperature below the boiling point of water, rain began to fall—and continued to fall for centuries. As the water drained into the great hollows in the Earth's surface, the primeval ocean came into existence. The forces of gravity prevented the water from leaving the planet. All life on Earth depends on this process, called the water cycle.
From the shoreline to the deepest seafloor, the ocean teems with life. The hundreds of thousands of marine species range from microscopic algae to the largest creature to have ever lived on Earth, the blue whale. The ocean has five major life zones, each with organisms uniquely adapted to their specific marine ecosystem. The epipelagic zone is the sunlit upper layer of the ocean. It reaches from the surface to about 200 meters (660 feet) deep. The epipelagic zone is also known as the photic or euphotic zone, and can exist in lakes as well as the ocean.
Scientists one day hope to be able to plunge a submarine under the surface of Titan, Saturn's biggest moon. Nasa hopes to be able to do so within the next 20 years. For us, the Ocean of significance is ‘Thiruparkadal’ where Lord Sriman Narayana reclines on Adisesha.

Sri Peyalwar whose darshan was enabled by the lights lit by Poigai Alwar and Boothathalwar – asks : is it the deep-Ocean hue of the Lord that is beautiful; was the water [that eventually became sacred Ganges because it washed the lotus feet of Emperuman] poured on the lotus feet of the Lord by Brahma - when Sriman Narayana accepted the gift of land, and in accepting stretched His foot into space – beautiful ….
~ to us it only Sriman Narayana and the dazzling beauty of
Sri Thelliya Singar on Masi Swathi [18.2.2025] - there was siriya maada
