celebrating the birth of Lord Sri Krishna - Sri Jayanthi 2020 - Gopi Talav, Dwaraka

The philosophy of Sri Vaishnava sampradaya is Vishishtadvaita .. we the followers of Sriman Narayana are easily identified by the ‘Thiruman’ that is worn on the forehead – it is not only a symbol, it is a protection for us.  It is Urdhva Pundram that goes up – it represents the Lotus feet of Sriman Narayana with Sri Lakshmi thayar in the middle in the form of Srichurnam.  Thirumannkappu is kavacham, the protection.

Sri Parthasarathi Thiruvallikkeni - have darshan of Krishna also.

Sri Krishna at Somnath

In Northern India, some wear ‘Gopi-chandana’ the symbol in yellow, of the sacred soil from Dwaraka or Vrandavan – it is worn as a tilak.  Nearer Gomti Dwaraka, around 20 km from Dwaraka Railway station, Gopi Talav is a small sacred pond located in Samlasar village lying closer to Beyt Dwaraka, a place significantly attached to Lord Krishna.

The greatest of Ithihasa Puranas are Sri Ramayan and Mahabaratham.  The latter revolves around Bhagwan Sri Krishna who gave us ‘Srimad Bhagwat Geetha’ at the battlefield of Gurukshetra.   The birth of Lord Sri Krishna at Mathura to Vasudeva and Devaki is celebrated with gaiety everywhere.  While some celebrate the coming of Lord Krishna to this Universe on Ashtami day as ‘Gokulashtami’ – in South India, it is more with the star of ‘Rohini’ and the birth day is being celebrated as : Krishna Jayanthi, Janmashtami, Gokulaashtami, Sri Jayanthi and more

Today   10.09.2020     is a day of great significance, for we Celebrate the ‘Birth  of Bhagwan Sri Krishna’.  Ithihasa Puranas are the fundamentals to tenets of Vaishnava philosophy and one can learn everything in Sri Ramayana and Mahabaratha.  The dark ocean-hued Lord Krishna should come to our homes – at our homes we should have Him leave His imprints of one foot etched with the conch (Sangam) and the other with the discuss-(Chakram) giving us waves of lasting joy that rise over and over again,  as Lord Krishna comes  toddling.

Mathura is the holy place where Lord Krishna was born…. ~ the centre of what is fondly referred as Braj bhoomi.  Remember Lord was born in a prison cell at Mathura, the capital of   Surasena kingdom ruled by Kamsa, the maternal uncle of the Lord.  This is a very old place dating back to Ramayana days.  According to the Archeologists, the Ikshwaku prince Shatrughna slayed a demon called Lavanasura and claimed this  land.  By some accounts this place was a densely wooded Madhuvan.   This place was closely associated with history too.  Centuries later,  Mathura was one of the capitals of Kushan dynasty. Megasthenes, writing in the early 3rd century BCE, mentions Mathura as a great city.

The land of Braj is full of sacred places, revered on account of their being the reputed haunts and homes of Krishna. The pilgrims can never rest until they have made the round of these holy shrines, and hence, especially upon the occasion of Krishna's birthday, called JanmAshtami, falling in the month Bhadon, corresponding with our August-September, in the midst of the rainy season, they may be found by the thousands making the Ban Jathra, or perambulation of Braj. The distance travelled is popularly said to be eighty-four kos, or one hundred and sixty-eight miles, with Mathura as the central point in the circle.  The pilgrims naturally start from the holiest place in the holy city of Mathura, namely, Visrant Ghat. The first halting place is Mahaban, some four or five miles southwest of Mathura, in the present village of Maholi, lying back from the river about the same distance. This is the reputed place, as has been before related, where Rama's brother, Satrughna, founded the city of Madhupura, which Hindu classic literature from the earliest period identifies with Mathura.

The birth of Lord Sri Krishna at Mathura to Vasudeva and Devaki is celebrated with gaiety everywhere.  While some celebrate the coming of Lord Krishna to this Universe on Ashtami day as ‘Gokulashtami’ – in South India, it is more with the star of ‘Rohini’ and the birth day is being celebrated as : Krishna Jayanthi, Janmashtami, Gokulaashtami, Sri Jayanthi and more – all various names celebrating the birth of Bhagwan Lord Sri Krishna in this Universe on the Ashtami (8th day of dark half of Krishna paksha) on the Rohini Nakshathiram.  This year, Srijayanthi is being  celebrated grandly at Thiruvallikkeni and other divyadesams today 10.9.2020.

Born in Mathura, growing up in Gokul, Govardhan, Vrindavan – Lord Krishna later moved to Dwaraka.  Gopi Talav is a mid size lake located around 20 kms from Dwarka on the way to Bet Dwarka. The story behind the lake takes us back to Lord Krishna’s childhood when he was loved fondly  by the gopikas of Vrindavan. When Krishna shifted his capital to Dwarka, the gopis couldn’t bear his estrangement. They came to meet him in Dwarka and performed raas on the day of sharad poornima. After the raas, they offered their lives to the soil of this land and merged with Lord Krishna. The soil here is fine and smooth bearing a yellow color and is believed to have divine properties that can cure  diseases.

Devotees visit this place with fervour, take purificatory bath at holy Gopi Talav and buy Gopi chandan, as a token of their visit. The whole area around Gopi Talav is made up of ghats for bathing with many shrines peppered around them.  The yellow claey sand is of religious significance for its attachment to Gopikas and Lord Krishna Himself.   Besides this legend, the Gopi Talav is also associated with Arjuna, who after the Kurushetra battle considered himself to be the best warrior but was made to understand his mistake as he escorted his consorts to Bhet Dwaraka and realized his folly at this Talav.
