Thiru Ashtabujakaram Divyadesam ~

Gajendra moksham – every child  would have  heard so many times the puranic legend of ‘Gajendra moksham [salvation of elephant Gajendra]’ ~ whence   Sriman Narayana  Himself  came down to earth to protect Gajendra (elephant) from the death clutches of Makara (Crocodile). This vruthantham is glorified in many pasurams and there are many divyadesams linked to this including Ashtabujakaram and Thirukabisthalam.

Today something on Divyadesam Attabuyakaram situate in Thirukachi near the famous Sri Varadharaja Perumal Thirukovil.  In most divyadesams, one would see the temple pond, the majestic Gopuram leading the dwajasthambam and sannathi of Emperuman.  Here at Attabujakaram, there is the little pond, main entrance Gopuram and as one enters – one circumambulates to reach the sannathi of the glorious Perumal true to His name endowed with 8 arms and armaments to each one of them.

Attabuyakaram or Ashtabujakara  Perumal Temple is  located in Kanchipuram.  Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the presiding deity is Ashta Bhuja Perumal (with eight hands) and his consort Lakshmi as Alamelumangai.  The temple is believed to have been renovated by the Pallavas of the late 8th century AD, with later contributions from Medieval Cholas and Vijayanagar kings. The temple has three inscriptions on its walls, two dating from the period of Kulothunga Chola I (1070–1120 CE) and one to that of Rajendra Chola (1018-54 CE). A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all the shrines and two bodies of water. There is a four-tiered rajagopuram.

The vegavathi puranam of Goddess Saraswathi and the river is associated with this temple and Emperuman taking Ashtabuyam killing the snake as Sarabeswaran and the interesting legend of   Gajendra moksham – of saving the elephant King Gajendra.  The presiding Perumal is Adikesava Perumal, Gajendra Varadhan and Chakradhar.

An  inscription of the chola period on the  walls indicates gift of tax free land in Chola Chaturvethimangalam to the temple for two years and levying tax of not more than 2 paise per veli subsequently. There are lot of gifts endowed to the temple during the Pallavan kings, but the present condition makes it appear that the administrative HR&CE has not ensured collections from the land holdings to the fullest extent.

At Thiruvallikkeni it would be Sri Peyalwar’s moonram thiruvanthathi and the sarrumurai pasuram is of special significance. Alwar directs us to fall and take the lotus feet of Emperuman.  He with eight hands at Attabujakaram divyadesam in the holy Kanchi – holds victorious eight weapons that have never heard of defeat, He who wields the Chakra that went sparkling towards the proud crocodile, killed it and saved the elephant King Gajendra purely because of his devotion.  Can there be any better refuge than His feet – let us fall and pray to the most benevolent Lord, our only Saviour.
