Sri Prahladar [of Sri Raghavendra Mutt, Triplicane] purappadu 2017

Triplicane the place of Lord Parthasarathi is replete with  religious activities ~ today it is ‘Thiruppavadai Uthsavam’  at this divyadesam after yesterday’s Jyestabishekham and there would be no purappadu till Pavithrothsavam.

Hinduism has opulence of scriptures and resources.  The most important amongst them being ‘Vedas’ – ‘Ithihasams – the Ramayana & Mahabaratha’; ‘Puranas’ and Bhagwad Gita.  The God and our religious philosophy are so well explained in the Vedanta philosophy of our 3 Acharyas.  The ‘Advaita philosophy’ of Sri Sankaracharya; the ‘Vishishtadvaita’ philosophy of  Sri Ramanujacharya and the ‘Dvaita’ philosophy of Sri Madhvaacharya.

There is fair sprinkling population of Madhwas in Triplicane – i.e., those who follow the ideals propagated by Sri Madhvacharya. Understand that the writings of Sri Madhvacharya comprises of thirty-seven works, collectively called Sarva-moola Grantha.  They are divided into four groups consisting of his commentaries on the Upanishads, Bhagavad-Gita and Brahma-sutra,  writings on rituals, image worship, rules for the ascetic order and more. There have subsequently been commentators like Sri Jayathirthar, Sri Vyasarajar, Sri Raghavendrar etc., who have further explained the theology of Sri Madhvacharya.

In the philosophy of Dvaitha siddantha, Dvaita meaning duality the reality is composed of only two basic principles: the independent (sva-tantra) and the dependent (para-tantra). God or the Supreme Being is the only independent reality. For Sri Madhvacharya the differences that we see in this world are real and not due to illusion (maya). Madhva’s duality, therefore, greatly contrasts Sri Sankaracharya’s theology of oneness, Advaita. As we have Guru parampara Acharyas in Sri Vaishnavism, the hierarchy in Madhvas starts with Sriman Narayana [MahaVishnu] Himself, Pirattiyar Lakshmi Devi, and then has Brahma, Saraswati, Garuda, Anjaneya… heard from a friend that they have Karmaja Devatas which includes Sri Prahladarajar.

Prahlada as we know is famed for his blemishless devotion to Sri Maha Vishnu, despite attempts by his father Hiranyakashipu, to turn him to the contrary. He is accorded special importance as being the reason for the Narasimha avatâr. The puranic instance of Sri Prahlada makes us understand that God is everywhere and He comes readily to save his devotee in distress.  Constant, unquestioned, pure faith in HIM is devotion.  After Sri Prahlada and Sri Vyasaraya, Madhwas rever Sri Raghavendrar in holy esteem.

Today on 9th Aug 2017 on the occasion of  Aradhana uthsava of Sri Raghavendra Swami there was  grand purappadu of  Sri Prahaladarajar from Sri Raghavendra Mutt.  Some photos of the procession are here.

With regards – S. Sampathkumar.

Thiruvallikkeni Gajendra Moksham 2017 :

Gajendra Moksham Garuda Sevai at Thiruvallikkeni 2017

Aquila is a constellation in the northern sky. Its name is Latin for 'eagle' representing the bird who carried Zeus/Jupiter's thunderbolts !  In Hindu mythology, Garuda is the vahana of Lord Sriman Narayana.  Brahminy kite is considered to be the contemporary representations of Garuda.  Indonesia adopts a more stylistic approach to the Garuda's depiction as its national symbol, where it depicts a Javanese eagle.

Today 7th August 2017  occurred grand purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni ……  even a child would know having heard so many times the puranic legend of ‘Gajendra moksham [salvation of elephant Gajendra]’ ~ whence   Lord Maha Vishnu Himself  came down to earth to protect Gajendra (elephant) from the death clutches of Makara (Crocodile).   It also offers us great learning – the  otherwise mighty elephant too could get into difficulty and in its extreme distress the elephant after testing its power and understanding  its futility, still had the presence of mind to think of  bhatki (devotion) and gnana (spiritual knowledge) ….. the plea of elephant was immediately answered by Lord Sriman Narayanan, who came rushing in to protect  His devotee – making the earthly human beings realise that if God does so for an elephant, He sure would protect  all of us too.

Today  is ‘Yajur Upakarma’ and in the night there is going to be Chandra grahanam ~ the lunar eclipse.  It is raining now too !!

Gajendra moksham also explains that one who falls under the divine feet of Lord [prapathi – surrender] seeking salvation will surely be taken care of. The reenactment of Gajendra moksha takes place during the full moon in the month of Aadi.   During Theppothsavam, Lord Varadhar has sarruppadi of  ‘Gajendra moksha thirukolam’. In Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, Lord Devathirajar (the Moolavar) is giving us darshan on Garuda vahanam – “aanaiyin thuyaram theera pul oornthu sendru nindru aazhi thottanai” [the one who transcended on the bird to wipe out the trouble of elephant] in the words of Thirumangai Mannan.  Here are some photos of Garuda vahana purappadu

Sri Alavanthar Sarrumurai 2017

..   can you connect Veeranam, Ponniyin Selvan, Solanum tirlobatum  (தூதுவளை)  !!!

At Chennai, it has rained for the past two days – it was sharp spell of showers yesterday ~ yet, it is hot and sweltering heat – residences are worried about water shortage.  Every street we see water tankers and people running after them with colour colour plastic pots.  Though there are four reservoirs of Poondi, Cholavaram, Redhills and Chembarakkam as lifelines for drinking water needs of Chennaites, there is another important water source that supplements daily water supply to the city and that is more than two hundreds of kilo meters away……

“I take you all on time-machine (in a boat) to a period aeons ago … started a great novel written in 1950” … the wonder Ponniyin Selvan of Kalki – much happens here  – the story  starts with the description ‘bounded by Chozha kingdom and Thondainaadu, nearer ThillaiChirrambalam is a vast ocean-like lake ……….-and on that 18th day of Aadi – a young horse rider  ‘VanthiyaThevan’ was …… ’ here are few lines from that great novel :  before you read any further – have you heard of ‘Sollanum trilobatum’ – likely that you would have eaten this .. !!

Wonder what the description is all about ~ it is the immortal writing of Kalki ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ novel.  The lake spoken about is 235 km away from Chennai, yet becoming its lifeline, supplying roughly 50 to 180 million litres of water to the city every day.  The lake owes its existence to Chozha  prince Rajaditya  who in  the 10th  century  assigned his men the task of excavating this tank, to collect the surplus waters of the Kollidam River.

In the 1830s,  Arthur Cotton, the engineer who later harnessed the waters of the Krishna and Godavari, studied the tank in detail. He noted that there was no serious defect in the tank (this, 900 years after it was constructed) .. in recent decades much water has flown in concrete pipes becoming hotly debated corruption topic.  The Veeranam lake derived its name from the nearby place ‘Veera Narayana puram’ which is of great significance to Srivaishnavaites.  From  Veeranam lake in Cuddalore from which water is brought in by 230 km long pipeline.   The Veeranam project, to supply water to Chennai, was conceived in 1967; later got mired in rampant corruption; once there were so many pipes lying unutilized in the city that were synonymous with the corruption in the project .  The project's completion in 2004 was a major political victory for the AIADMK government of the time due to the project's long history of corruption and politicking. At some point of time, water started flowing from the lake to Chennai.

Alavanthar at Avatharasthalam

Now getting back to the lake, Sri Vaishnavaites have more to remember and like  of this. The Veeranam lake derived its name from the nearby place ‘Veera Narayana puram’ which is of great significance to Srivaishnavaites.  It is here that our Acharyars Nathamunigal and later Sri Alavanthar were born. Yamunaaryar [Alavandar] born in Aadi Uthirada nakshathiram, was a genius – a child prodigy known for his prowess  of eka-santha–graha (remembering forever by learning only once). He was known for his sparkling intelligence, didactic logic and exceptional devotion to Sriman Narayanan.  His defeating a much learned Akkiyalvan is very famous.  After the debate, the Queen hailed Yamunar as 'Alavandar'-' one who came to rule /  save me'.

It was due to the ceaseless efforts of Sri Rama Mishra (Acharyar Manakkal nambi), the desciple of Uyyakkondar that Yamunacharyar was initiated back to the spiritual life. Sri Rama Misrar initiated Yamuna into the ultimate truths and passed to him the spiritual treasures bequeathed to him by Sri Nathamuni. After the initiation, Yamuna became the leader of Visistadvaita Vedantins and settled at the holy place of Thiruvarangam. He gave our Sampradhayam, priceless treasure-trove of 8 works of which most important are the : Chatusloki on Pirattiyar; Sthothra Rathinam extolling Emperuman; Sri Geethartha Sangraham, which formed the basis for Udayavar’s Gita Bashyam. He identified and gave us the Greatest of Acharyas – ‘Sri Ramanujar’ as he spontaneously called Udayavar ‘He is the First of all -   'ஆ முதல்வனிவன்'  [aa muthalvan ivan]’

Solanum tirlobatum  (தூதுவளை)  is a medicinal herb that can be consumed by frying in ghee and grinding it to paste.  The thorny shrub has to be cleaned carefully as thorns are considered mildly toxic.  The dried leaves are made in to powder and used to treat fever and common cold.  Many Indian medicines use this herb ~ this is no post on cooking or medicine – but this herb played its part in Srivaishnavism.   In the early days, when Yamunaryar won the kingdom by his knowledge, he was enjoying the life as a King.  Our Acharyar Manakkal Nambi used to supply this herb to the kingdom and took chance to meet Yamunar, started teaching him Geetha and later ensured that he reached  Periya Perumal at Thiruvarangam, ensuring that Srivaishna lineage got benefitted by Acharyar Alavanthar.

Ekadasi purappadu 2017 ~ Alavanthar Uthsavam @ Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam

To think of hell is the worst thing that can happen to mankind.  Who is our Saviour – who can care and lead us to good things and prosperity.

Swami Nammalwar offers the most simplistic solution.  We need not do anything other than surrendering to Sriman Narayana and think of His divine Lotus Feet – the very thought of those supreme legs that measured earth and took care of Mahabali is the best possible solace for any of our problems.

At Thiruvallikkeni today Sri Parthasarathi had periya mada veethi purappadu for Ekadasi.  Then it was day 7 for Sri Alavanthar – Periya Thiruvanthathi and 7th canto of Thiruvaimozhi were rendered.  After there was Thirumalai as today is Kettai thirunakshathiram of Thondaradipodi Azhwar.  Here are some photos of today’s purappadu
