Sri Vaishnava Thennacharya Jeeyar at Madurai Kallazhagar Thirukkovil.
"வர்த்திஷ்ணு
பாலத்ருமஷண்ட மண்டிதம் வநாசலம்”
என்று புகழப்படும் திவ்யதேசம் எது தெரியுமா ?
In our Srivaishnava Thennacharya Sampradhayam –
Mutts headed by Pontiffs known as Jeeyars have
special significance. The greatest
Acarya hailed as “Yathi Rajar” was known as Thiruppavai Jeeyar and our Koil
Manavala Mamunigal is hailed as Periya Jeeyar.
There are samprathayic Mutts at
Vanamamalai, Thirukkurungudi, Azhwar Thirunagari, Thirumalai, Melukottai and more
as instituted by Udayavar and Mamunigal !!
In recent days, there are Court judgements on
appointment of Jeeyar first at Thiruvarangam and at Madurai Kallazhagar Kovil.
Most often in Tamil
movies, Madurai is depicted as a city of violence – one would find people
roaming freely with ‘aruvals’ tucked on the back of the shirt !! -
the beautiful and religious land of Madurai was originally a forest
known as Kadambavanam. King Kulasekara Pandya cleared the forest and
built a temple around the Lingam. On the day the city was to be named,
Lord Shiva is said to have appeared and drops of nectar from his hair fell on
the town. So, the place was named Madurai – mathuram meaning “sweetness” in Tamil.
Madurai has a rich historical background in the sense that Lord Shiva himself
performed sixty-four wonders called “Thiruvilaiyadals”.
It has a rich history –
as early as the 3rd century BC, Megasthanes visited Madurai. Later many people
from Rome and Greece visited Madurai and established trade with the Pandya
kings. Madurai flourished till 10th century AD when it was captured by Cholas
the arch rivals of the Pandyas. The Cholas ruled Madurai from 920 AD till the
beginning of the 13th century. In 1223 AD Pandyas regained their kingdom and
once again become prosperous. In 1323, the Pandya kingdom including Madurai
became a province of the Delhi empire, under the Tughlaks. There were
battles and plunderings by marauding Islamic invaders. The 1371, the
Vijayanagar dynasty of Hampi captured Madurai and Madurai became part of the
Vijayanagar empire. After the death of Krishna Deva Raya (King of Vijayanagar
empire) in 1530 AD, the Nayaks became independent and ruled the territories
under their control. Among Nayaks, Thirumalai Nayakkar (1623-1659) was
very popular. The Raja Gopuram of the Meenakshi Amman Temple, The Pudu Mandapam
and The Thirumalai Nayakar’s Palace are living monuments to his artistic
fervor.

The
Jeeyar Mutt associated with Sri Kallazhagar Temple, also known as Sri
Sundararaja Perumal Temple, at Azhagar Kovil near Madurai, is an interesting
part of the history of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Our Jagadacharya Sri Ramanujar was instrumental in organising and
strengthening the Sri Vaishnava tradition. He travelled extensively,
established religious institutions and encouraged the propagation of
Vishishtadvaita philosophy.
The recent
Madurai High Court proceedings [before the Hon’ble Mr Justice GR SWaminathan
and the Hon’ble Dr Justice P Murugan in
WP [MD] no. 30448 of 2026] is of great
significance.
The writ petition filed by one Mr R.Sathyanarayanan S/o.Ramamoorthy,
states that office of Jeeyar traditionally associated with Arulmigu Kallalagar
Temple, Madurai is vacant for more than eighty years. He sought the Court to direct the authorities to take
steps to fill up the said vacancy. The
counsel for the temple, took exception to the prayer made in the writ
petition. The learned Additional Advocate General appearing for the HR&CE
Department took a positive stand in an identical issue pertaining to the office of Jeeyar of Arulmigu
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple.
The records
suggest that one Sri - Pattabhirama Ramanuja Jeeyar was appointed in
1937 and appears to have vanished from the scene sometime in 1946. The Mutt has remained without Jeeyar
thereafter; the Court concluded that this need not be an objection of present
appointment !
Some of
the core aspects of Judgement that are of significance for Srivaishnavaites are
:
·
It is held in the
Srirangam case that a Jeeyar is not a departmental appointee, Nor is he subject to disciplinary power of
Board of Trustees. However, if he abuses
his power and position, the statute contains proviso to deal with the same.
·
Jeeyar is primarily the servant of the Lord and is
His personal attendant. It is seen from the “Thozhil Attavanai” and
“Suthanthira Attavanai” which are the governing documents with regard to the
religious and secular administration of the temple that the Jeeyar is an
intrinsic part of the temple administration. He is the paramount authority. He
will hold the temple keys. The other staff including the priests are answerable
to him. Therefore, the Jeeyar has to be housed within the temple campus. He has
to be maintained out of the temple funds.
·
The petitioner is an
ardent devotee of Kallalagar. He is entitled to insist that the administration
of the temple is carried out as laid down in “Thozhil Attavanai” and
“Suthanthira Attavanai”. Every devotee is a stakeholder in the matter of
upholding the temple customs and usages. This right flows out of Article 25 of
the Constitution of India.
The Hon’ble Court categorically concluded that Since the successor can be chosen by the Heads of the Kindred Institutions, we request the following persons, namely, Thirukurungudi Jeeyar Swamy, Alwarthirunagari Jeeyar Swamy and Periya Nambigal Swamy to undertake the task of choosing the next Pontiff of Arulmighu Sri Ramanuja Jeeyar Mutt, Kallalagar Temple, Madurai. Since venerable religious personages have been entrusted with this onerous task, we consciously refrain from issuing any timebound direction. They shall confer amongst themselves either in person or through virtual mode. We express our sincere hope that this process will be fast-tracked and the Kallalagar Temple will have a Jeeyar of eminence at the earliest. Once the choice is made, the department will formally issue proceedings recognising the same.
Gleaning historical
records, there appears some reference to a person named District Collector
"BuhArs", associated with the administration of the Kallazhagar
Temple (Thirumaliruncholai), around 1801 AD. The reference appears in an
article titled Thiru Maalirum Cholai – Part 19: History of Later Day Rulers,
published in the Bhakti List Archives in February 1997. It states that when the
temple came under the jurisdiction of the East India Company in 1801, Collector
Buhars regularised the administration of temple properties and extended moral
support to the temple authorities.
Further searches did not
lead any further – closely, Madras Civil Servants, 1885, records Thomas Bower
Hurdis as Collector of Madura and Dependent Polygars in 1801. The Imperial Gazetteer of India states that
Hurdis became Collector of the whole Madura District when it came under British
control in 1801. A Madras High Court
judgement of 10 November 1914 identifies Mr Hurdis as the first British
Collector of Madura and discusses his handling of temple endowment lands.
We now
pray our Emperuman – the most beautiful Thirumalirumcholai Sri Sundararaja
Perumal [Kallazhagar] that things move properly and we have an erudite Jeeyar
controlling the affairs and conducting the practices of the temple in
Vaishnavaite tradition and samprathayam.
