The Thiruvavathara Uthsavam
of Periyazhwaar is now being celebrated.
Periyaazhwaar upon determining the uniqueness of ‘Lord Vishnu’ was given
rousing reception on an elephant by the Pandia King. Lord Maha Vishnu Himself
descended on Garuda to see the celebration. On seeing the Lord capable of
destroying all his enemies with a small movement of his fingers, Azhwaar felt
that ‘no harm should befall on the munificient Lord’ and sung ‘pallandu,
pallandu…’
Thus yaanai vahanam
[elephant as his ride] would be befitting ! Thirumangai Azhwar used to ride
horse on his various journeys !! still at Chenna Kesavaperumal temple aka
Pattnam Kovil in Chennai near Flower bazaar, there was the purappadu atop the
beautiful horse – a special one as this could swing as well. Here are photos taken by my friend

திருப்பல்லாண்டு பாடிய பெரியாழ்வார்
உத்சவம் தற்போது நடைபெற்று வருகிறது -" நல் ஆனியில் சோதி நாள் " அன்று
சாற்றுமுறை.
தமது அவதாரத்தில், பெரியாழ்வார்,
பாண்டியராஜனுடைய பண்டித ஸபையிலே, பரதத்வநிர்ணயம் பண்ணின உடனே பெரியாழ்வார்க்கு
அவ்வரசன் யானையின்மேலே மஹோத்ஸவம் செய்வித்தான். அப்போது எம்பெருமான் ஸ்ரீவைகுண்ட ஸபரிவாரனாய்
எழுந்தருளி எதிரே ஸேவைஸாதிக்க, ஆழ்வார் பெருமாளுக்கு இந்நிலத்திலே யாராலே
என்ன தீங்கு விளையுமோ ! ஒரு அமங்கலமும் உண்டாகக் கூடாது என உடனே 'பல்லாண்டு, பல்லாண்டு,
பல கோடி நூறாயிரம்' என மங்களாசாசனம் செய்தார். எப்படிப்பட்ட எதிரிகளையும் ஒரு
விரல் நுனியாலே வென்றொழிக்கவல்ல தேஹவலிவு கொண்ட பெருமானையும், தனது அசாத்திய பரிவாலே
பல்லாண்டு பாடியவர் பெரியாழ்வார்.
பொற்கிழியை வென்ற
விஷ்ணுசித்தன், பட்டர்பிரான் என பட்டத்து
யானை மேல் ஏறி வந்ததை நினைவு கூற - யானை வாஹனம் ஆழ்வாருக்கு ஏற்றமே ! கலியன் தான் புரவியில்
எங்கும் பவனி வந்தவர். எனினும் 'பட்டணம் கோவில் எனும் சென்ன கேசவப்பெருமாள்
கோவிலில்' நடைபெறும் பெரியாழ்வார் உத்சவத்தில்
நேற்று [26.6.12] குதிரை வாஹனம். ஸ்வர்ண கீல் குதிரை என்னும் ஆடல் குதிரையிலே
பெரியாழ்வார் புறப்பாடு கண்டு அருளினார்.
