The NIlamata Purana,  (नीलमतपुराण)  an ancient text of Kashmir contains  information on its history, geography, religion, and folklore.. .. much has changed in Kashmir since.  National security was catapulted into being the primary issue for this general election for the first time with the car bombing in Pulwama in mid-February and its aftermath in an aerial confrontation between India and Pakistan in the Balakot-Naushera episode. The strong-on-defence plank of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has at its core the demonstrated decision-making credentials of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which the surgical strikes of September 2016, the Balakot aerial strike and the anti-satellite test serve to buttress.With the intensity of street protest and stone pelting declining, the use of pellet guns by security forces has gone all-time low in Kashmir this year. The acquisition of pellet ammunition by the security forces has also touched a new low first time. 

The land of Kashmir, in the northernmost geographical region of the Indian subcontinent,  was at pinnacle of glory and peaceful existence many centuries ago.  In the first half of the 1st millennium, the Kashmir region became an important centre of Hinduism and later of Buddhism; later still, in the ninth century, Kashmir Shaivism arose.  Adhi Sankarar visited this place, so did our great Acaryar Bhagwat Ramanujar to Saradhapeedam .. ..

Today   9^th May 2019  is a grand day -  Emperumanar 960 was grandly celebrated in 1977 – one may not have good memory of that;  in 2017  it was 1000 and this year 1002 – the modern day equipment & technology  ensure capture by way of photos and videos of the grand celebrations  at Thiruvarangam, Thirumala, Thirukachi, Sriperumpudur, MelukoteThiruvallikkeni and at many many more places.  So many places – Thiruvarangam, Thirumala, Thirukachi, Thiruvallikkeni, Sriperumpudur, Thirukurungudi, Melukote, Mathura, Pushkar, Kashmeeram, KOngunadu and more are associated with Him as he traversed the Nation by foot, propagating vishitadvaita concept.

இன்றுநன்னாள் ~ எம்பெருமானார் அவதார திருநாள் ..இராமானுசர் 1002  இன்று. நமது பாரததேசம் புண்ணியபூமி.  ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவர்களான நமக்கு வேதமும், ஆசார்யர்களுமே பிரதானம். அநுதினமும் நாம் அநுஸந்திக்கும் தனியனில் எம்பெருமானையும், ஆழ்வார்களையும்,  எம்பெருமானாரையும், நமது ஓராண்வழி ஆசார்யர்களையும் தொழுது – ஸ்ரீமன்நாராயணனுக்கே அடிபணிபவர்கள் நாம்.  தீமனம் கெடுத்து, ஸ்ரீமன்நாராயணனை தொழும் மனமே தந்து, அறியாதன அறிவித்து, பரமபுருஷனைக் காட்டிக்கொடுக்கும் ஆச்சார்யர் மிக உயர்ந்தவர்.  அவர் நமக்கு உலாவும் பெருமான். ஆச்சார்யரத்னஹாரத்தில் நடுநாயகர் ஆன நம்சுவாமி எம்பெருமானார் சாற்றுமுறை!  சித்திரையில் செய்ய திருவாதிரை-  இன்று,  இந்த நல்லுலகமே எதிர்பார்த்துகாத்து இருந்த ~  சீரியநாள் – ஒப்புயர்வற்ற நம்மிராமாநுசமுனியின் ஆயிரத்து இரண்டாவது பிறந்தநாள் சாற்றுமுறை.  திருவல்லிக்கேணி வீதிதனிலே அத்யாபகர்கள்  'வாழிய ராமானுஜன்; அவரடித் தாளினை வாழி' என  விஜயீபவ ; விஜயீபவ ; விஜயீபவா எத்சரிகை' என 'வெள்ளைவிசிறி'  [தங்கள் உத்தரீவங்களை விசிறி] ஆர்ப்பரித்தனர்.

Of the three great exponents of Vedanta philosophy, BhagwadRamanuja with his aesthetic beautiful interpretations occupies the central place.  Sri Ramanujar has the pride of place in the list of our Acharyars; he is hailed as Udayavar, Emperumanar, Bashyakarar, Ilayazhwaar, Yathirajar, ThiruppavaiJeeyar, NumKovilannan, amongst other names was born in the year 1017 at Sri Perumpudur on ‘Thiruvathirai’ thirunakshathiram in the month of Chithirai.  Two years ago, Udayavarsarrumurai assumed greater significance for it was  His millennium year – and now  it is 1002 years since he descended on earth  at Sriperumpudur.  [Chithiraiyil seyya Thiruvathirai]

Our darsana Sthapakar, Sri Ramanujar  rightly reverred as ‘YathiRajar’ ~ the king among yathis [hermits and sages], the  greatest reformer he was, Ramanuja gave us many vedantic treatises - toured the entire Country, making the Srivaishnavatie tradition flourish in all his path.  He was a great administrator too. Our Acharyar formulated a faith in which none were devoid of Divine Grace.  The great social reformer, had the vision of introducing most acceptable way of life for every baktha inculcating respect and love among fellow human beings.  Today we talk of codes and SOPs – thousand years ago, this Great Acharyar  gave us Niyamanappadi ~ the manual for the services to be performed in the Temple, all supported by endowements in his blue book.  When Sri Ramanujar went to Melukote, he was 82 and he returned to Thiruvarangam at ripe age of 94. – and more was to happen in Srirangam, guided by his indomitable spirit of service to Lord. He created flawless systems, corrected the administration of Sri Rangam ensuring the proper maintenance of the wealth of Lord Ranganatha and creating teams to properly continue all kainkaryams to the Lord.

                      The fountain of knowledge, he was,  handed over to the generation his wealth of knowledge through his many works which include the Magnum Opus ‘Sri Bashyam – the Vishishtavaida commentary of Brahma sutram of Vyasa Bhagavan.; VedanthaDeepam, Vedanta Saram, Vedanta Sangraham, Gadyathrayam and many many more …. The  3 Gadyams – Saranagati Gadyam, Sriranga Gadyam and Vaikunda Gadyam are collectively known as ‘Gadyatraya’ ~ are in someways considered to be swan song of our Acharyar.  The Saranagati Gadyam is live exposition of the doctrine of ‘prapatti’ – the total saranagati.  Sri Ramanujar prays that thee Lord may be pleased to bless his sincere and true saranagati at the lotus feet of Srimannathan be accepted as truly and well-performed and lead to the desired end without any interruption.  Our Acharyar describes the unique qualities of NamPerumal  with words ‘Sathyakama, Sathyasankalpa’ which would mean the most loveable quality of resolve to protect His devotees and the will to be incarnated in any form to come to the succour of devotees – He is Creator, Protector and Sustainer. Today after morning purappadu (of which photos are posted here) – there was mangalasasanam, rendering of Gadyatrayam ~ then Thirumanjnam, Thirumozhisarrumurai .. and ....

இன்று 9.5.2019 -  சித்திரையில் செய்ய திருவாதிரை நந்நாள்.  நம்ஆச்சார்யன் இவ்வுலகத்தில் வந்துதித்த சீரியநாள். செங்கயல்வாவிகள் சீர்வயல்கள் சூழ்ந்த ஸ்ரீபெரும்புதூரில் இளையாழ்வார் எனும் ராமானுஜர் அவதரித்த நந்நாள்.  எம்பெருமானாரின் பிறப்பு உலகத்தவர்கள் உடனே பெறுதற்கான நண்ணறு ஞானத்தை அனைவருக்கும் அருளி அவர்களை ஸ்ரீமன்நாராயணன் இடத்தில் பக்தி செலுத்துமாறு மாற்றிய அவதார திருநாள். 

உடையவர் ஒரு தலைசிறந்த நிர்வாகி.  ஸ்ரீரங்கம் கோவிலின் நிர்வாகத்தை முற்றிலும் சீர்படுத்தி தென்னரங்கனின் செல்வத்தை காப்பாற்றினவர் * பாரததேசம் முழுதும் யாத்திரை சென்று "ஸ்ரீமன்நாராயணனின் பரத்வத்தை" நிலைநாட்டினவர். ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவத்தை பாரெங்கும் பரப்பினவர்.   ஸ்ரீபாஷ்யம், வேதாந்ததீபம், வேதாந்தஸாரம்,  வேதார்த்த ஸங்க்ரஹம், பகவத்கீதாபாஷ்யம், கத்யத்ரயம் ஆகியகிரந்தங்களை உடையவர் அருளிச்செய்தார்.   ஸ்ரீபாஷ்யம் அவரது தலைசிறந்த படைப்பு. வியாசபகவானின் ப்ருஹ்மசூத்திரத்துக்கு விசிஷ்டாத்வைத பிரமாணமாய் கீதாபாஷ்யம் இயற்றினார். பிரபத்தி என்கிற சரண்புகுதலை பற்றி சரணாகதிகத்யம், ஸ்ரீரங்கநாதரை தன்னை தாசனாக கொள்ளும்படி ஸ்ரீரங்ககத்யம், மஹாவிஷ்ணுவின் இருப்பிடத்தை விவரிக்கும் வைகுண்டகத்யம் என்பன இவரது பிறநூல்கள்.

லோகோபகாரியாராகிய இராமானுசர் நமக்கு ஆதாரமாகவும் சக்தியளிப்பவராகவும் ரக்ஷகருமாகவும் இருப்பார் என்பது சுவாமி கூரேசர் வாக்கு. ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவர்களுக்கு அவரது பிறந்தநாள் அதிவிசேஷம். இந்நாளை சித்திரையில் ஆதிரைநாள் சிறக்கவந்தோன் வாழியே( சித்திரை மாதம் திருவாதிரை நட்சத்திரம் பெருமைகொள்ளும்படி அதில் பிறந்தவன் வாழ்க); சீர் பெரும்பூதூர் முனிவன் திருவடிகள் வாழியே (எல்லாசிறப்பும் கொண்ட திருப்பெரும்பூதூரில் பிறந்த இராமானுசமுனிவனின் திருவடிகள் வாழ்க! வாழ்க!!.) என வைஷ்ணவர்கள் மகிழ்வர். இன்றும் எல்லா வைஷ்ணவதலங்களிலும் சேவாகாலம் முடியும்போது "ராமானுஜார்ய திவ்யாக்ஞா – வர்ததாம் அபிவர்ததாம்" என அவரது கட்டளைகள் சிறப்புறநடைமுறையில் உள்ளதை பாராட்டுவர்.

இவ்வுலகில் இனிஒன்றும் எண்ணாதே நெஞ்சே ! இரவுபகல் எதிராசர் எமக்கினி மேலருளும்....எனநம் ஆச்சார்யர்க்கு ஆளாவோம் நாம்.. பெரியகடலை போன்ற கருணைகொண்ட இராமானுஜர் திருவடிகளை தாள்பணிவோர்க்கு எல்லாநலமும் பெருகும்.   அவரைப்பற்றி சிந்திப்போர்க்கு எண்ணங்கள் தேனூறி என்றென்றும் தித்திக்கும் !

இன்று காலை – உடையவர் சாற்றுமுறை சிறப்பாக நடைபெற்றது. காலை புறப்பாட்டில் உடையவர் அழகிய பல்லக்கில் எழுந்து அருளினார்.   காலை புறப்பாட்டில் ஸ்தோத்ரபாடல் கோஷ்டி ஆனது. எம்பெருமானார் பிறந்தநாளை அத்யாபகசுவாமிகள் மேல்உத்தரீவத்தை விண்ணைநோக்கி விசிறி ஆர்ப்பரித்து கொண்டாடினர்.

நாற்றம் ~ தமிழை சரியாக அறியாதவர்கள் முகம் சுளிக்கக்கூடும் ! இச்சொல் தற்காலத்தில் கெட்ட வாசனையை குறிக்கும் சொல்லாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. உண்மையில்  நாற்றம் என்பது நறுமணத்தைக் குறிக்கும் வார்த்தை.  .

என்ற குறளில் மலரின் நறுமணத்தை, நாற்றம் என்ற சொல்லில்தான் வள்ளுவர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார். மலரப் போகின்ற மொட்டில் இருக்கும் மணம்போல இப்பெண்ணினது நகைமொக்குள் ஒரு குறிப்பு உண்டு என்பது பாடலின் பொருள். நறுமணத்தை குறிக்கும் வேறு சொற்கள், வாடை, நறுநாற்றம், வாசனை.

Blooming flowers are one of the most beautiful things you can see in nature.  Back home, flowers are considered important in our worship.  We offer flowers to our Gods. After 10 days of  Brahmothsavam, it is rest called ‘Vidayarri’ for Sri  Parthasarathi Perumal  - and after 10  days of rest, comes the florally bedecked ‘Pushpa Pallakku – the palanquin with flowers’.  The floral palanquin  looks beautiful and pervades goodness all around – treat to the eyes, ears and senses  of Bakthas.

பூக்கள் அழகானவை; நறுமணம் தர வல்லன.  பூக்களை அழகாக  தொடுத்து இறைவனுக்கு சாற்றி வழிபடுவது தொன்று தொட்டு உள்ள மரபு. ஒரு நாட்டில் அதிகமாக மலர்கள் காணப்படுவதனை வைத்தே அந்த நாட்டின் நீர்வளம், நில வளம், மக்களின் மனவளம், ஆகியவற்றை நன்கு உணரலாம். இதனைப் பழங்காலந்தொட்டு தமிழ்ப் புலவர்கள் தம் இலக்கியங்கள் வாயிலாகப்  உணர்த்தி வந்துள்ளனர்.   நீலம், நெய்தல், குவளை, ஆம்பல், அனிச்சம்; குறிஞ்சி;  வாகை;வகுளம் ; கோங்கம்; - என பல மலர்கள் உள்ளனவாம்.  இவை பல நாம் பார்த்ததில்லை அல்லது பார்த்தாலும் இதுதான் என விவரிக்க தெரியாது.  சிறுவயதில் பல இல்லங்களில் ஈர்குச்சியினால் தைக்கப்பட்ட மந்தாரை இலையை  சாப்பிட உபயோகித்து பார்த்துள்ளேன்.  சில தகவல்களின்படி, ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகளுக்கு மந்தாரை இலைகளை ஏற்றுமதி செய்கிறார்களாம்.   ஆங்கே மந்தாரை தட்டுகள் வழக்கத்தில் உள்ளனவாம் !!

நாம் பார்த்த அளவில் - மல்லிகை,  முல்லை,  செண்பகம், தாமரை, மகிழம், ரோஜா,  அல்லி, விருச்சி,  செங்காந்தள், சம்பங்கி, பச்சை சம்பங்கி;   போன்ற நறுமலர்கள் திருக்கோவில்களில் எம்பெருமானுக்கு சாற்றப்பெற்று வருகின்றன.

செல்கதிர் மாலையும் மயக்குமாலோ செக்கர்நன்மேகங்கள் சிதைக்குமாலோ**

புஷ்பங்கள்  பற்றிய பல குறிப்புகள் சங்க தமிழிலும் நமது திவ்யப்ப்ரபந்தத்திலும் உள்ளன. சுவாமி நம்மாழ்வார் "மல்லிகை கமழ்தென்றலீருமாலோ வண்குறிஞ்சியிசை"  எனும் போது -- மல்லிகையின் பரிமளத்தோடு கூடின தென்றலையும்; வண்குறிஞ்சி இசை என்னும்  இடத்தில் 'செவிக்கினிய குறிஞ்சிப் பண் இசையையும்' குறிக்கிறார்- குறிஞ்சி என்று ஒரு நிலப்பரப்பும்; குறிஞ்சி என்று அரிய பூவினமும் உண்டு.   பெரியாழ்வார்  - "வலங்காதின் மேல்தோன்றிப் பூவணிந்து மல்லிகை வனமாலை மெளவல் மாலை" என - மேல்தோன்றிப்பூ,  மல்லிகை, செங்காந்தள் பூ,  காட்டுமல்லிகை மாலை இவற்றை குறிக்கிறார். 

Swami Nammalwar says …. ‘the most pleasant fragrance of jasmine –wafting breeze,  ears receiving the pleasing kurinji music; Sun setting with beautiful red colours in the horizon – all attracting -  but more attracting was the pleasing sight of the fragrant palanquin made of flowers – for they were set for the most beautiful Allikkeni Emperuman ‘Sri Parthasarathi’.

Today (8^th May 2019) is the ‘Pushpa Pallakku – the palanquin with flowers’. Favourite memories are triggered by our sense of smell ~ flowers are admired for their beauty, exquisite shapes, spectrum of colours and more so for their fragrance. In our tradition, the decorative wreath of flowers woven together as garlands adorn God.  Flowers have their pride of place and are mentioned in our epics – in Divyaprabandham too.

பெரியாழ்வார் கண்ணனது குழந்தை பருவத்தை வரிசையாக அனுபவித்து, அவருக்கு :செண்பகம், மல்லிகை, பாதிரிப்பூ, தமனகம், மருவு, செங்கழுநீர், புன்னை, குருக்கத்தி,இருவாட்சி, கருமுகை - என பலபல மலர்களை அணிந்துகொள்ளுமாறு வேண்டி அழைக்கிறார்.  பல்வேறு மணங்களை தரும் மலர்களை எல்லாம் கொணர்ந்தேன்,இவைகளை இப்போதே சூடிக்கொள் என பிரார்த்திக்கிறார்.  

நம்மாழ்வார் தனது திருவாய்மொழி "திண்ணன் வீடு" என்கிற பத்தில் : "தேவும் எப்பொருளும் படைக்கப்*   பூவில் நான்முகனைப் படைத்த*   தேவன் எம்பெருமானுக்கு அல்லால்*     பூவும் பூசனையும் தகுமோ ?  -  என வினவுகிறார்.  தேவர்களையும் மற்றை எல்லாப் பொருள்களையும் உருவாக்குவதற்காக   நான்முகனை படைத்தவன். அத்தகைய தேவாதிதேவனான எம்பெருமானுக்கு  அல்லாமல் ஏனையோர்க்கு மலர்களும் மலர்களால் அர்ச்சித்து வணங்கும் வணக்கமும் தகுவன ஆகுமோ? ஆகா !!!! 

புஷ்பப் பல்லக்கு  என்பது வாசம் தரும் நல்ல  மலர்களால் ஆனது. திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் பிரம்மோத்சவம் கண்டு அருளிய எம்பெருமான்  'விடாயாற்றி' என இளைப்பாறுகிறார். இவ்வமயத்தில் இசைக்கச்சேரிகளும் திருக்கோவிலில் நடைபெறுகின்றன.  பிறகு மணம் தரும் மலர்களால் அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்டு சிறப்பாக வடிவமைக்கப்பட்ட 'புஷ்பப் பல்லக்கில்' புறப்பாடு கண்டு அருள்கிறார்.   பூக்கள் அணிவதற்கு ஏற்ற சகல சௌந்தர்ய ஸௌகுமார்யங்களையும் தகுதியையும், முதன்மையும் உடையவர் - ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் மட்டுமே.

Akshaya Tritiyai ~ Sri Udayavar Yanai vahanam 2019

The Mānasollāsa, also known as AbhilashitarthaChintamani, is an early 12th century Sanskrit text composed by the South Indian king Someshvara III of the KalyaniChalukya dynasty. It is an encyclopedic work that inter-alia states that it is the sovereign’s duty to protect the forests where elephants thrive — because only the richest and widest of forests can support the large, long-ranging Elephas maximus. 

Miles away, conservationists in Tanzania's Tarangire National Park were surprised to know that  57-year-old elephant gave birth to twins in Aug 2017. Elephant twins are rare, and mortality is often higher among twins, but the calves are reportedly doing well.   In Botswana, President of the Nation arrived  for the Kasane Elephant Summit which is expected to bring together three other Heads of State whose countries are part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area to discuss a common policy towards the management of jumbos.The environment and tourism minister of Botswana, the nation with the world’s biggest population of elephants, called for southern African countries to agree on a common approach to control populations of the animal to counter criticism from the international community.  At a time when elephants are ruthlessly killed for its tusks and other reasons, it is stated that the number of elephants in Botswana has surged to 160,000 from 55,000 in 1991, increasing conflict between the animals, which at times destroy crops and kill villagers, and farmers.

Gold prices are trading modestly higher in early-morning U.S. trading this week, following a U.S. economic report that was much stronger than expected. Gold’s resilience in the face of the strong jobs report suggests recent selling pressure has at least temporarily exhausted the bears, and the yellow metal is due for at least a respite from downside pressure.  Back home, for sure you would have noticed so many advertisements and offers being made by famous as also little known jewellers – and everyone is shouting to offer gold ! ~ today there would be huge crowds at gold jewellery shops, while smart some would have made online purchase or pre-booked their share of gold. No prize for guessing what the buzz is all about – it is ‘Akshaya Tritiya 2019’

It is not about Gold alone – of the  glittering white metal ‘Silver’  - its prices  extended their sharp rally in London trade  reaching new 11-week highs for US investors at $17.30 per ounce while gold edged back from an overnight rise. Global gold prices rose on Tuesday as US President Donald Trump's threat to hike tariffs on Chinese imports re-kindled trade tensions between the two countries and pushed investors to seek insurance in safe-haven assets.  Silver prices however were falling.  Market fundamentals still bear hope for silver prices due to three factors: diminishing silver supply, rise in investment demand, and potential for increased industrial use. As if investors didn't have enough to worry about already, Wednesday provided them with yet another one. A strong performance in the crude oil market underscored the ongoing geopolitical tensions which have served to buoy the price of gold lately.

So much on Gold and Silver for today is ‘Akshyatritiya’ ~ a day marketed to be good to buy gold and other ornaments.   “Akshaya Tritiya” is  the day when Lord Parashuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was  born. It is considered one of the most auspicious days in the year and, as such, people not only buy jewellery but also perform all 'shubhkarya' on the day.  One of the most important legends associated with observing AkshayaTrithiya is that of Lord Krishna and Sudama [Kuchela].  Another significant occurrence  is that of the Pandavas receiving the Akshay Patra from Krishna.

I have posted earlier  on how marketeers have converted this to be a day of buying gold ornaments and silver ~ making it a great day for the Sellers.  The word "Akshaya" means the never diminishing in Sanskrit and the day is believed to bring good luck and success. This is no post on Gold or Silver – but on our AcharyarEmperumanaar. Today, (7^th May 2019) the 8^th day of the Uthsavam,  it is  ‘yaanaivahanam’ for Udayavar in the evening; and the yaanai in Thiruvallikkeni is silvery.   Swami Emperumanaar had purappadu on the silver elephant and the oozing grace simply outweighed the serenity and beauty of the moon – one could see only the kindness and glory of Swami.  Here are some photos of Swami Yathirajar on Yaanaivahanam.

திருவரங்கத்து அமுதனாரின் அனுபவம் :எம்பெருமானார் தன்னை அண்டியவர்களைக் காப்பாற்றுபவராகவும், தான் விரும்பியவர்களுக்கு நல்லநெறியை காட்டித் தருபவராகவும், அழகான யானை போன்றும் உள்ளார்.  நம்மாழ்வார் அருளிச்செய்த, அழகான பண்களுடன் கூடிய, தெளிவான தமிழில் உள்ள திருவாய்மொழி,  ஸ்ரீமந்நாராயணன் எனும் கடலில் இருந்து,  ஆழ்வார்கள் ஆசார்யர்கள் வழியாக எம்பெருமானாரை அடைந்து, ஸம்ஸாரிகளைக் காக்கிறது.  கம்பீரமான யானை போன்ற எம்பெருமானாரின் வாதங்களை எதிர்த்து வாதம் செய்பவர்கள், வாழ்வு பயன் எம்பெருமானை அடைவதே என உணர்ந்து அவரிடமே உபதேசம்  பெற்றனர்.
