Malai Nadu - Thiruvanvandoor divyadesam - :

The Pamba River is the longest river in Kerala after Periyar and Bharathappuzha, and the longest river in the erstwhile former princely state of Travancore.  Devotees to Sabarimala temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa take bath at an important point, cross the river to reach the beautiful temple in the hills.  The river is also known as 'Dakshina Bhageerathi'.

Pandanadu (also known as Pandavar Nadu) is in Chengannur taluk in Alappuzha district, in Kerala.   Pandanad was formed by the Pandavas, hence the name Pandava Nadu. Pandanad had many temples that claim origins from the Pandava.   In literature – nayaki in love would speak to birds (and what not !) to convey her love to the Chieftain .. .. here Swami Nammalwar in his Parankusanayaki bavam speaks to birds of various hues to convey her unconditional love for that eternal Lord .. .. :  O Flocking egrets picking worms in my flowery marshes!  Go unto  My Lord having shiny lips akin to those of fresh fruits, He who has discus (Sri Chakra) in hand, residing in the flowery  prosperous Tiruvan-vandur, the flourishing land where  paddy grows tall.  Go tell him with folded hands my tale of love.

Thiruvanvandoor ~ figures in 11 pasurams of Swami Nammazhvaar in his Thiruvaimozhi  (6th decad – first thiruvaimozhi).   It is one of the five ancient shrines in the Chengannur area of Kerala, connected with Mahabharata, where the five Pandavas built one temple each; Thrichittaru  Maha Vishnu Temple by Yudhishthira, Puliyur Mahavishnu Temple by Bheema, Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple by Arjuna, Thiruvanvandoor Mahavishnu Temple by Nakula and Thrikodithanam Mahavishnu Temple by Sahadeva. The temple is open from 4 am to 11:00 am and 5 pm to 8 pm and is administered by Travancore Devaswom Board of the Government of Kerala.

Thiruvanvandoor is a village in Chengannur Taluk in Alappuzha district, in Kerala.  Addressed ‘Vaigal thiruvanvandur’ – it  lies in  Pandanad-  the region of Pandanad and neighboring villages have many Hindu temples Vanavathukkara that bear historic and architectural value.  There is alsothe temple of  Sree Gosalakrishna  nearer to the ancient temple Thiruvanvandoor Mahashetram build by pandava (nakula).  A major event is the annual Gajamela festival  -   it is a 51-day annual festival in connection with the anniversary of idol installation at Sree Gosalakrishna Temple at Thiruvanvandoor that culminated with    ceremonial procession followed by Gajamela.   The procession is very grand with the accompaniments of caparisoned elephants, floats depicting Puranic themes, Mayuranrithom, Krishnanattom, Karakom, Nadaswarom, Panchavadyam, Pancharimelom, etc,  held from Thrichittattu Maha Vishnu Temple at Chengannur to the Gosalakrishna Temple in the afternoon.

Here is a video of the celebrations as seen on you tube : Gajamela Thiruvanvandoor

The divyadesam in Malainadu is “Thiruvanvandoor” glorified by Swami Nammalwar.  The famous Pamba river is near the temple and hence the name of the deity is Paambanaiappan.  The temple is built in Kerala style architecture.  The temple has a two storeyed gopuram or a gateway tower, with the upper storey having wooden trails covering the Kottupura (a hall of drum beating during festivals).  The  Dwajasthambam is located axial to the temple tower leading to the central sanctum and there is a Deepastamba, which is the light post. Chuttuambalam is the outer pavilion within the temple walls. Between the entrance of Nallambalam to the sanctum, there is a raised square platform called Namaskara Mandapa which has a pyramidal roof.

Understand that Gajamela occurs in May every year – unlikely that it was conducted this year due to Corona.  Here are some photos collated from web and some taken during our visit in Dec 2018 when we stayed in Thiruvalla and had darshan at  Thiruvalla, Thiruvaranvilai (Aramula), Vaigal Thiruvanvandur, Kuttanattu Thirupuliyur, Thiruchengunur Thiruchitraru, & Thirukadithanam.

Gopura darsanam - Sri Parthasarathi Swami Temple - Triplicane

Today is Purattasi Sanikizhamai – sadly, Temples remain closed for devotees .. .. are you able to spot out Sri Parthasarathi Swami temple gopuram in this concrete jungle

This morning I had posted and circulated these two  photos taken from lighthouse – and amidst many buildings, Sri Parthasarathi swami temple gopuram too is visible.

Few of my friends felt that though the picture looked good, it was not worthy of darshan – here is a photo taken from a nearby building – the Rajagopuram, the gopuram at Western gate, and all vimanams – of Sri Parthasarathi, Sri Azhagiya Singar, Vedavalli thayar, Sri Varadharajar, Sri Andal,  Sri Ranganathar, thirumazhisai azhwar  are visible.

Purattasi Sani 3 2021 :

Today 2.10.2021 - is  third Saturday in the month of Purattasi.  On this day thousands would come to the temple for darshan of Emperuman.     The 4th one would be day 4 of Navarathri uthsavam that commences on 6th Oct 2021 on Mahalaya Amavasai day.   For every Purattasi Sani, (other than the ones during Navarthri)  there would be grand periya mada veethi purappadu of Sri Azhagiya Singar at Thiruvallikkeni, but sadly, due to Corona restrictions placed by the Govt, there would be no purappadu and we cannot go inside Temple and have His darshan too.  Sri Thelliya Singar in His purappadu coming out of Western Gopuram – and having darshan of His Sangu Chakram would rid us of all sins, diseases and difficulties – we can now pray to Him to provide that opportunity sooner !!

Our mind chases happiness and wants to be relaxed and happy !  Happiness is an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment. While happiness has many different definitions, it is often described as involving positive emotions and life satisfaction.  When most people talk about happiness, they might be talking about how they feel in the present moment, or they might be referring to a more general sense of how they feel about life overall. Because happiness tends to be such a broadly defined term, psychologists and other social scientists typically use the term 'subjective well-being' when they talk about this emotional state.

Happiness is an electrifying and elusive state. Philosophers, theologians, psychologists, and even economists have long sought to define it. And since the 1990s, a whole branch of psychology—positive psychology—has been dedicated to pinning it down. More than simply positive mood, happiness is a state of well-being that encompasses living a good life, one with a sense of meaning and deep contentment. Feeling joyful has its health perks as well. A growing body of research also suggests that happiness can improve your physical health; feelings of positivity and fulfillment seem to benefit cardiovascular health, the immune system, inflammation levels, and blood pressure, among other things. Happiness has even been linked to a longer lifespan as well as a higher quality of life and well-being.

Attaining happiness is a global pursuit. Researchers find that people from every corner of the world rate happiness more important than other desirable personal outcomes, such as obtaining wealth, acquiring material goods, and getting into heaven.  The word pleasure means :  enjoyment, happiness, or satisfaction, or something that gives this:

Pleasure is a momentary feeling that comes from something external -- a good meal, our stocks going up, making love and so on. Pleasure has to do with the positive experiences of our senses, and with good things happening. Pleasurable experiences can give us momentary feelings of happiness, but this happiness does not last long because it is dependent upon external events and experiences.

Reminiscing the good olden days, here are some photos of Purattasi sanikkizhamai  purappadu of Sri Azhagiya Singar at  Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam on 11.10.2014.

Sri Mukundha Mala ~ Temple at Kodungallur (Thiruvanjikalam) [Thiruvanchikulam]

Today 30th Sept 2021 is Punarvasu nakshathiram in the month of Purattasi –  celebrating the birth of Sree Ramapiran, the masa thirunakshathiram of Sri Kulasekara Azhwar. Embar and Mudali andan – in normal times, there would have been siriya mada veethi purappadu of Sree Ramar – alas, due to corona restrictions, there is none !!

Sri Kulasekara Azhwar at Thiruvallikkeni

Here is a beautiful verse on Lord Mukunda :  O Lord Mukunda! I bow down my head to Your Lordship and respectfully ask You to fulfill this one desire of mine: that in each of my future births I will, by Your Lordship's  mercy, always remember and never forget Your lotus feet.

Kodungallur is a municipality in the South Western border of Thrissur district of Kerala. Kodungallur is 29 kilometres (18 mi) northwest of Kochi and 38 kilometres (24 mi) southwest of Thrissur, by National Highway 66.  The region  was devastated by natural calamities—a flood or an earthquake—in 1341, and consequently lost its commercial importance thereafter. Further, it came under attack on various occasions: in 1504 by the Portuguese-Kochi allied forces during their movement against Calicut in 1524, by the Mappilas during their attack against the Portuguese, and in 1565 again by the Portuguese.  Historically, Kodungallur has been identified as Mahodaya Puram, Mahavanchimana Pattanam, Thrikulasekarapuram, Jangli, Gingaleh, Cyngilin, Shinkali, Chinkli, Jinkali, Shenkala, and Cynkali, which are all derived from the name of the River Changala. We are reading this today for ‘Thirukulasekarapuram’ – is named after our Sri Kulasekara Azhwar, who was born here – it is our own Thiruvanjikalam.

Musiri   was an ancient harbour -  seaport and urban center - on the Malabar Coast that dates from at least the 1st century BC, if not before it. Musiri is mentioned in the bardic Tamil poems and a number of classical sources.  Musiri  was a key to the interactions between south India and the Persia, Middle East, North Africa and Mediterranean (Greeks and Romans) region.  The important known commodities "exported" from Muziris were spices (such as black pepper and malabathron) and more.  The locations of unearthed coin-hoards suggest an inland trade link from Muziris via the Palghat Gap and along the Kaveri Valley to the east coast of India. Though the Roman trade declined from the 5th century AD, the former Muziris attracted the attention of other nationalities, particularly the Persians, the Chinese and the Arabs, presumably until the devastating floods of Periyar in the 14th century.

The exact location of Muziris is not known to historians and archaeologists but is postulated to be  Kodungallur, a town near Cochin. Kodungallur in central Kerala figures prominently in the ancient history of southern India as a vibrant urban hub of the Chera rulers. A series of excavations were conducted at the village of Pattanam near Cochin by Kerala Council for Historical Research (an autonomous institution outsourced by Kerala State Department of Archaeology) in 2006-07 and it was announced that the lost "port" of Muziris was found.

Sri Kulasekhara Azhwaar  was the amsam of ‘kausthubam’ – the jewel adorning Sriman Narayana.  He was born at Thiruvanjikulam as son of King Thiruviradhan and ruled the Chera Empire.  He was greatly devoted to Rama and ‘Ramayana’ and reverred Sri Vaishnavaites with devotion.   I travelled from Ernakulam (Cochin)  and worshipped here -  it took around 1hr 30 mins – it is slightly closer to Thrissur.  It is known as Thirukulasekarapuram and Sri Mahadeva temple is a famous temple here.

At Thiruvanjikkalam (Thirukulasekarapuram) (Thiruvanchikalam/ Thiruvanchikulam) Azhwar avathara sthalam, now stands a beautiful temple in Tamilnadu style – Sri Srinivasa Perumal Kulasekhara Alwar Temple, TKS Puram, Thiruvanchikulam, Kerala (under Cochin Devaswom board).  A temple dedicated to the memory of Kodungallur's ancient king materialised  with the active involvement of  Swami Nammazhvar (India) Foundation, Sri U.Ve. Velukkudi Krishnan Swami is the chairman of the foundation.  The main sannathi is that of  Lord Sreenivasa Perumal [Thiruvengadamudaiyan, whom Kulasekarar worshipped].  There is the sannathi of Sri Kulasekhara Azhwar – also Acaryas,  Nadhamunigal, Alavandar, Swami Ramanujar, Desikar and Manavala mamunigal. Azhwar avathara uthsavam is now on at this place too. [you can read the post of azhwar avatharasthalam here : Sri Kulasekarar avathara sthalam

Nearer Azhwar avatharasthalam is another ancient temple where Azhwar rendered his magnum opus – “Mukundha Mala”.  (this temple is not be confused with Navai Mukundha sthalam which is Thirunavai / Thirunavaya).. .. uniquely here there are sannathies for Sri Vasudevar, Nandagopar and .. .. Sri Parthasarathi perumal.

PS:  Azhwar has not sung about his birthplace but more about Thiruvithuvakodu. The divyadesam Vithuvakkodu, sung by Alwar is nearer Shoranoor on the Kallikottai route.

There is another famous Shiva Temple nearer – Thiruvanchikulam Mahadeva temple, mentioned in Thevaram and there is -  famous Kodungallur Bhagawathy Temple.
