culmination of Adhyayana Uthsavam ~ Iyarpa Sarrumurai 2021

I have been posting details and photos of ‘Adhyayana Uthsavam’  comprising of Pagal Pathu, Vaikunda Ekadasi, Irapathu, culminating with Iyarpa Sarrumurai – during this great Uthsavam, “Naalayira Divaprabandham’ is rendered entirely. During Pagal pathu, it is the 1st and 2nd Aayiram pasurams including : Periyalwar Thirumozhi, Thiruppavai, Nachiyar Thirumozhi, Perumal Thirumozhi, Thiruchanda Vrutham, Thirumaalai, Thirupalliyezuchi, Amalalathipiraan, Kanninum Chiru thambu, Thirumozhi, Thirukurunthandagam, ThiruNedumthandagam are recited in the  afternoons.

The Irapathu is hailed as ‘Thiruvaimozhi Thirunaal’ when after the purappadu, daily one hundred from Thiruvaimozhi  are rendered everyday.   On day 10, it is the last canto ‘Patham Pathu’ of Swami Nammalwar, which speaks of ‘entering Vaikundam’ by all ‘vaikuntham puguvathu mannavar vithiye’ in the pasuram of  Nammalwar.

Thirumylai Sri Amirthavalli thayar & Sri Aravindha Madhava Perumal

In this earthly World giving more than ample sphere for sins and sins  - any act could lead to that sinful path, adding more harm.  Nammalwar says that he can only think of that Lord worshipped at Paramapadam by celestials whom he would like to praise with choicest words string neatly as garland in his poem without swerving weebit away from the chosen path of devotion.   Here is a pasuram from Swami Nammalwar’s Periya thiruvanthathi :

The day after the culmination of Irapathu,  comes “Iyarpa Sarrumurai” when all pasurams of Iyarpa are being rendered.  Today, 4th Jan 2021 is  Iyarpa sarrumurai at Thiruvallikkeni and all other divyadesams.  At the Thiruvaimozhi Mandapam, there was the grand golu of all Azhwargal and Acharyas and in the centre was Lord Parthasarathi.  Divyaprabandha goshti started around 0515  pm  ~ the pasurams forming part of the Moondravathu Aayiram, known as Iyarpa : Muthal Thiruvanthathi,   Irandam Thiruvanthathi, Moonram Thiruvanthathi, Nanmugan Thiruvanthathi, Thiruvirutham, Thiruvasiriyam, Periya Thiruvanthathi, Thiruvezhuk koorrirukkai, Siriya Thirumadal, Periya Thirumadal and Iramanuja Noorranthathi [also known as Prabanna Gayathri] of Thiruvarangathu Amuthanar were all rendered.

The photo at the start is a screengrab of Iyarpa sarrumurai at Thiruvallikkeni divaydesam – rest photos are of  abhimana sthalam  Mylai Sri Madhava Perumal Thirukovil, situate nearer Peyalwar avathara sthalam, taken yesteryears.  The good news is Temples are now fully open without restrictions and devotees are being offered ‘theertha prasadams’ also.

Nammalwar Thiruvadi Thozhal 2021

Irapathu day 10 ~ Sarrumurai – Nammalwar Thiruvadi Thozhal  2021

O Dark expanse-of-space, and all that is in it!  You are the sky, the light, the Gods and everything else, You are the creator, protector,  first-cause of Gods and men.  Alas, you have left me to bear my burden alone  .. .. laments Swami Nammalwar in his Thiruvaimozhi 10th decad.  Here are some photos of purappadu of yester years.  The first one is of Swami Nammazhvar at Thirukachi – rest are of Thiruvallikkeni.

It is very peaceful and soothing to look at the vast expanse  of the sky – of the stars, moon and celestial objects and thinking how far the horizon is !  .. .. Parallax   is a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight, and is measured by the angle or semi-angle of inclination between those two lines. To measure large distances, such as the distance of a planet or a star from Earth, astronomers use the principle of parallax.

The sky (also sometimes called celestial dome) is everything that lies above the surface of the Earth, including the atmosphere and outer space.  In the field of astronomy, the sky is also called the celestial sphere. This is an abstract sphere, concentric to the Earth, on which the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars appear to be drifting. The celestial sphere is conventionally divided into designated areas called constellations.  An observer on the surface of the Earth can see  only a small part of the sky, which resembles a dome (sometimes called the sky bowl) appearing flatter during the day than at night.

The celestial sphere can be considered to be infinite in radius. This means any point within it, including that occupied by the observer, can be considered the center. It also means that all parallel lines, be they millimetres apart or across the Solar System from each other, will seem to intersect the sphere at a single point, analogous to the vanishing point of graphical perspective.

The horizon is the line that separates the Earth from the sky. There two main types of horizons—Earth-sky horizons and celestial horizons. Both Earth-sky and celestial horizons have different sub-types of horizons.   The geographic horizon is the apparent boundary between the Earth and sky. Mountains, trees, and other elevated features are not considered part of the geographic horizon. The sea-level horizon is the geographic horizon at sea level. One of the best places to see the sea-level horizon is a beach. The ocean and the sky provide a clean, flat line where the Earth seems to meet the sky.

Celestial horizons are used by astronomers. They are measurements of the position of the Earth relative to the rest of the sky. The astronomical horizon is the imaginary horizontal plane always at a 90-degree angle from the observer's zenith (the point directly above the observer). Astronomical horizons are great circles that surround the observer.  The true horizon is the imaginary plane that passes through the center of the Earth, perpendicular to its radius. From orbit, the true horizon is spherical, following the shape of the Earth.

~ and our Emperuman is beyond the Universe – creator of the Universe, capable of alleviating all pain and distress – HE is the eternal saviour.  Bow to Him, Surrender to HIM.

Today,  3rd Jan 2021 marks the culmination of Irapathu Uthsavam. The latter part of Adhyayana Uthsavam – ‘Irapathu’  sarrumurai is  performed today.  This grand fete is performed for Swami Nammalwar and the 10th day is very significant for the “Thiruvadi Thozhuthal”.   Today it is a bonanza : Irapathu Sarrumurai,   & Thiruvadi thozhal.  Last year it was Sankaranthi too ..

On all the days of Irapathu there was purappadu in the evening – and it is Swami Manavala Mamunigal’s ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’ in the  goshti… On Sarrumurai day, Swami Nammazhwar could be worshipped in his Thirumeni without kavacham.   After thiruveedhi purappadu  (hope this too gets restored sooner) ,  inside the Temple occurs the  famed ‘Thiruvadi Thozhal; Swami Nammazhwar’s entry  of Mokshapuri after a great life on this earth   – as he himself sung ‘வைகுந்தம் புகுவது மண்ணவர்   விதியே’ [vaikuntham puguvathu mannavar vithiye’] is enacted.

Swami Nammalwar’s Thiruvaimozhi is of vedic excellence, elucidating the desire of Jeeva in attaining the Supreme Lord.  Alwar has given us thousands of sweetest hymns in Tamil with which we can forever engage in praising the glory of Lord – and in case, you nurse any doubt of the sins, troubles, of death, illness and more – the solution is too simple !  :    all our ills, obstacles, fears, sins will simply vanish upon uttering the name Kesava.

Thiruchengannur Thiruchirraru divyadesam :

On Makara Sankaranthi day, millions of devotees would have darshan of Swami Aiyappan at Sabarimala.  Those travelling by train would get down at Chengannur or Chengannassery.  They would take bath in holy Pamba river,   third longest river in  Kerala after Periyaru and Bharathappuzha and the longest river in the erstwhile former princely state of Travancore. Sabarimala temple   is located on the banks of the river Pamba.  The river is also known as 'Dakshina Bhageerathi'. During ancient times it was called 'River Baris'.  The River Pamba enriches the lands of Pathanamthitta District and the Kuttanad area of Alappuzha District and few areas of Kottayam  .. .. on its banks is located Thiruvaranvilai divyadesam (Aramula) and on the banks of ‘thiruchitraru’ is located another divyadesam – “Thiruchengannur’ sung by Swami Nammalwar.

Chera dynasty popularly ruled South India in an era whence Cholas, Pandyas and Pallavas too were the rulers.   Cheras ruled from Kerala and the Chera country was geographically well placed to profit from maritime trade via the extensive Indian Ocean networks. Exchange of spices, especially black pepper, with Middle Eastern and Graeco-Roman merchants are attested in several sources.

Changanassery is a municipal town in Kottayam district in the state of Kerala.  Changanassery is the gateway to the Western Ghats and Kuttanad. It is one of the major educational   centres of Kerala, with nearly 100% literacy. The first recorded history on the origin of Changanacherry is obtained from Sangam period literature. According to Sangam era documents, Uthiyan Cheralathan (Perum Chorru Udiyan Cheralathan, Athan I, or Udiyanjeral - AD c. 130) is the first recorded Chera dynasty ruler.   He had his capital at a place called "Kuzhumur" in Kuttanad and expanded the kingdom northward and eastward from his original homeland.   Nearer lies – Chengannoor, a  municipal town   located in the extreme eastern part of the Alappuzha district, on the banks of Pamba River.  Chengannur is 117 kilometres (73 mi) north of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram on the MC Road (State Highway 1). Chengannur is connected to Kollam and Kottayam by NH 220.

Sriveli at Chengannur Mahadeva temple

Chengannur is famous  for the Chengannur Mahadeva Temple as also the Srivaishnavaite shrine of Imayavarappan thirukovil.  The taluk comprises villages such as Kurattissery, Mannar, Ennakkad, Pandanad, Thiruvanvandoor, Chengannur, Mulakuzha, Ala, Puliyoor, Cheriyanad, Budhanoor and Venmony. The name Chengannur (chen - kunnu- ur/noor) is derived from the words 'Che' (Malayalam) which means red soil 'kunnu' (Malayalam) means hill and 'ur/oor' (Malayalam) that means land. Land of red hills ... Almost all those red hills are gone now due to excessive soil mining for land filling. This red soil is different from the soil of surrounding taluk of mavelikara & Kuttanad. In early modern period, Chengannur was a part of Kayamkulam dynasty and which later came under Travancore kings when Kayamkulam was ceded by Marthandavarma in the 18th century.  Pepper, popularly known as "black gold", was a major export item of Chengannur.

Of the 108 Divyadesams sung by Azhwaars and reverred by Sri Vaishnavaties, 13 are situated in Kerala and known as “Malai Nattu Divyadesangal” –  the one of the day is around 120 kilometers away from Thiruvananthapuram on way to Cochin and as you travel from Chennai – after Ernakulam, comes Thirupunithura, Kottayam, Chenganacheri, Thiruvalla – then the Railway Station of Chenganoor.  In fact one can have darshan of Divyadesams – Thiruchenganur, Kuttanattu Thirupuliyur, Thirukodithanam, Thiruvaranvila, Thiruvanvandur and Thiruvallavazh in a day by staying in Chenganur / Chenganassery / Thiruvalla.

Thiruvallikkeni Irapathu 7 - 2020 Perumal Muthangi ~ Nammalwar Nachiyar thirukolam

Sri Parthasarathi Irapathu Uthsavam day 7 : Muthangi

~ Nammalwar Nachiyar thirukolam 2020

In this beautiful World, there have been times when humanity have been threatened by Wars and diseases.  The two World Wars wiped out millions of people, doing economic harm too – the human history is replete with wars and there have been dreaded plagues too .. Corona has been different – it has brought the whole World on its knees harming and threatening them of bleak future.  We faced a lockdown of global proportions, scarcity of resources, families away from each other for an indefinite period, and yet, humanity is restless, remorseless.

Pearls are attractive -  Natural Pearls form when an irritant - usually a parasite and not the proverbial grain of sand - works its way into an oyster, mussel, or clam. As a defense mechanism, a fluid is used to coat the irritant. Layer upon layer of this coating, called 'nacre', is deposited until a lustrous pearl is formed.  A cultured pearl undergoes the same process. The only difference is that the irritant is a surgically implanted bead or piece of shell called Mother of Pearl. These 'seeds' or 'nuclei' are most often formed from mussel shells. Quality cultured pearls require a sufficient amount of time - generally at least 3 years - for a thick layer of nacre to be deposited, resulting in a beautiful, gem-quality pearl. Lower-quality pearls have often been 'rushed' out of the oyster too quickly (sometimes a year or less) and have a too-thin coat of nacre.

Throughout most of human history, black pearls were  absent. White pearls, fished from the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean and later from the Caribbean, were the desirable norm for jewelry and adornments. From European royalty to Mughal emperors and modern day fashion designers, wearing white pearls conveyed status and the status quo. But in warm lagoons in the southern Pacific Ocean, 1 in 15,000 black-lipped oysters grew a black pearl. Spanish and Portuguese navigators visited the islands that are now French Polynesia in the 16th century. The British claimed Tahiti in 1767, the French a year later. Europeans questing for tropical commodities and missionaries questing for souls noticed islanders wearing the curious black gems. There was little overseas demand for the baubles until Tahiti became a French protectorate in 1843, and black pearls reached French markets. Rarer than white pearls, they caught the fancy of Empress Eugénie, and an exclusive trend was born. They were the photo negatives of white pearls — chic, mysterious and exotic, just like the native people on these islands in the French imagination.

What a beauty  !  Wonder which Thayar is this ? ….  Emperuman in Archavatharam provides darshan to devotees ~ we need not even go to the temple, Swami Himself would come on the streets and provide us glorious darshan.  That is the purpose and advantage of divyadesa sthala vasam.. .. on day 7 of Irapathu Uthsavam  Swami Nammalwar is in Nachiyar thirukolam, displaying Parankusa nayika bhavam in her
Thiruvaimozhi verses.

On day 7 of Irapathu Uthsavam – it is  very grand Muthangi for Sri Parthasarathi at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam.

Nammazhvar cannot bear separation from Lord Narayana and he imagines himself in the role of the Lord’s lover and in this role he is Parankusa Nayaki. He also plays the role of the pining girl’s mother and her friend.  As Parankusa Nayaki, Nammazhvar sends messages to the Lord through birds.  In the pangs of love, Parankusa nayaki could not wait even for a short time, so she sends forth another batch of birds. She tells the parrots to convey to the Lord, that she is inconsolable.

31.12. 2020 was day 7 of Irapathu Uthsam -  being day 7,    Sri Parthasarathi Swami adorned Muthangi.  It is eternal bliss, indeed a feast to the eyes to have darshan of Paripuranan wearing a dress beautifully woven with pearls still unable to match the blemishless beauty of Perumal.  Swami Nammalwar praises the Lord at Thiruvarangam,  She falls into thought, faints and recovers;

Here are some photos taken during   yesteryears and one photo taken (mobile photo) inside the temple.   To me, Jan 1 is just another day – but if thoughts and belief is that it heralds a new beginning and heralds hopeful new phase of people lives becoming peaceful without fears of Covid, let us welcome it with open heart.
