Sri Thelliya Singar Aani Brahmothsavam  has commenced today at Thiruvallikkeni . Tuesday 18.6.2019 will be Yanai vahanam [astride Golden elephant]

Elephants always attract me.  An adult African elephant's trunk is about seven feet (two meters) long! It's actually an elongated nose and upper lip. Like most noses, trunks are for smelling. When an elephant drinks, it sucks as much as 2 gallons (7.5 liters) of water into its trunk at a time. Then it curls its trunk under, sticks the tip of its trunk into its mouth, and blows. Out comes the water, right down the elephant's throat.  An elephant's trunk is a fusion of its upper lip and its nose. Filled with more than 100,000 muscles, this huge appendage is both powerful and extremely dexterous. An elephant can use its trunk to rip a limb from a tree or to pick up a single blade of grass.

Because elephants typically eat up to 440 pounds of food a day, they have to be able to forage and eat small vegetation. Elephants can eat even small grains by forming a joint with their trunk to pile up grains. They crush the grains so hard that it molds into a form that they are then able to pick up and eat.  With such a big trunk, you might think an elephant has a great sense of smell, and you'd be right. Elephants have one of the most acute senses of smell among animals. According to LiveScience, "In a study of 13 mammals, African elephants were found to be superior sniffers, possessing the largest number of genes associated with smell — five times as many as humans and more than twice that of dogs."

Lucania was an ancient area of Southern Italy. It was the land of the Lucani, an Oscan people. It extended from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Gulf of Taranto. ‘Luca bos’   :  Lūca (“a city in Etruria”) + bōs (“cow”), literally Lucanian cow to mean elephant because the Romans first saw elephants in Lucania as part of Pyrrhus of Epirus's arm.

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, on day 6 evening, it is   ‘Yaanai vahanam’  for Sri Azhagiya Singar  ~ the one  at Thiruvallikkeni  is in sitting posture with  golden hue.

திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் சிறப்புற நடைபெறும் தெள்ளியசிங்கர் ப்ரம்மோத்சவத்தில் ஆறாம் நாள்  இரவு  கம்பீரமான  யானை வாகனம். திருவல்லிக்கேணி யானை வாஹனம் அமர்ந்த நிலையில், தங்க பூச்சுடன் ஜொலிக்கும். வாகனத்தின் மீது வெண்பட்டுடுத்தி, பெருமாள் பின்பு பட்டர் அமர்ந்து சாமரம் வீசி வருவது தனி சிறப்பு. யானை வாயில் வாழை மரங்கள் வைத்து, நிஜமான களிறு ஓடி வருவதைப் போல் இருக்கும்.   யானை வாகன புறப்பாட்டில் 'ஏசல்", "ஒய்யாளி"  என்று அழைக்கப்படும் சிறப்பு உண்டு.

திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் சிறப்புற நடைபெறும் ப்ரம்மோத்சவத்தில் 28.6.2018 அன்று ஆறாம்நாள் ~சூர்ணாபிஷேகம் உத்சவம். அன்று காலை அருள்மிகு ஸ்ரீஅழகியசிங்கர் அழகு பொலிந்திட தங்கசப்பரத்தில் புறப்பாடு கண்டு அருளினார்.

சூர்ணாபிஷேகம் சிறப்பு.:     சூர்ணம் என்றால் பொடி. கஸ்தூரி மஞ்சள் மற்றும் வாசனை திரவியங்களால் ஆன சூர்ணம் பெருமாளுக்கு சமர்பிக்கப்படுகிறது. இது நறுமணத்திற்கு ஆகவும் பெரியவாகனங்களில் எழுந்து  அருளிய களைப்பு தீரவும் ஏற்பாடு பண்ணப்பட்டதாக இருக்கலாம்.  திருகோவிலில் பெருமாள் முன்பு உரலில் இந்த சூர்ணம் உலக்கையால் புதிதாக இடிக்கப்பட்டு, பெருமாள் திருமேனியில் சாற்றப்படுகிறது. இந்த சூர்ணம், அனைத்து பக்தர்களுக்கும் வழங்கப்படுகிறது. திருவீதிப்  புறப்பாட்டில் திருமழிசை ஆழ்வார் அருளிய "கருச்சந்தும் காரகிலும் கமழ்கோங்கும் மணநாறும் திருச்சந்த விருத்தம்" அனுசந்திக்கப்படுகிறது. விருத்தப்பா எனும் பாடல் வகையைச் சார்ந்த 120பாசுரங்களால் ஆன பிரபந்தம் இது.  இதோ இங்கே திருமழிசைப்பிரானின் ஒருபாடல் *திருச்சந்தவிருத்தத்தில்* இருந்து : 

அச்ச நோயொடல்லல் பல்பிறப்பு அவாய மூப்பிவை

வைத்தசிந்தை வைத்தவாக்கை மாற்றி வானிலேற்றுவான்

அச்சுதன் அநந்தகீர்த்தி ஆதியந்தம்  இல்லவன்

நச்சு நாகணைக் கிடந்த நாதன் வேதகீதனே.

பயம், வியாதிகள், பல்வேறு அல்லல்களோடு கூடிய பல பிறப்புகள்  ஆகிய இவற்றையும்; இவற்றை அனுபவிப்பதற்காகக் கண்ட நெஞ்சையும், அல்லல் படும் சரீரத்தையும் போக்கடித்து ~ நம்மைப் ஸ்ரீபரமபதத்திலே கொண்டு சேர்க்க வல்லவன் - அடியாரை ஒருநாளும் கைவிடாதவனும், எல்லையில்லா கீர்த்திகளையுடையவனும், முதலும் முடிவும் இல்லாதவனும், விரோதிகளை அழிக்க வல்ல ஆதிசேஷன்  மீது சயனித்திருக்கும், வேதங்களினால் பிரதிபாதிக்கப்பட்டவனான ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் ஒருவனே ! 

On 28.6.2018 was  6^th day of Brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni  Divyadesam for Sri Thelliya Singar.   In the  morning after ‘Choornabishekam’, Sri Azhagiya Singar had purappadu in ‘AnandaVimanam [PunniyaKodivimanam]’.   In the purappadu,  ‘Thiruchanda Virutham’ given to us by Sri Thirumazhisai Azhwaar was rendered.   These 120 songs fall under the type ‘viruthapaa’ – they are replete with numbers and fall under a specialized category of tamil grammar called ‘ennadukkicheyyul’.

Sri Parthasarathi Vasanthothsavam 2019 - day 3

The green Manoranjitham garland was so adorable as we had darshan of Sri Parthasarathi emperuman on day 3 of Vasanthothsavm 2019.

A season is a period of the year that is distinguished by special climate conditions. The four seasons—spring, summer, fall, and winter—follow one another regularly. Each has its own light, temperature, and weather patterns that repeat yearly.  The seasons in the Northern Hemisphere are the opposite of those in the Southern Hemisphere. This means that in Argentina and Australia, winter begins in June. The winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere is June 20 or 21, while the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, is December 21 or 22.

Seasons occur because Earth is tilted on its axis relative to the orbital plane, the invisible, flat disc where most objects in the solar system orbit the sun. Earth’s axis is an invisible line that runs through its center, from pole to pole. Earth rotates around its axis.

Miles away, Spring has sprung, and so has Ontario's fresh local asparagus. Ontario asparagus farmers are working hard harvesting this year's crop for Ontarians to enjoy at their dinner tables. "It's incredible how excited Ontario consumers get when Ontario asparagus becomes available in retail stores, on-farms and farmers' markets.  There are more than 3,500 acres of asparagus grown in Ontario. Most of the 95 Ontario asparagus farmers grow a variety called Guelph Millennium, developed at the University of Guelph to be more adaptable to colder climates, produce higher yields than other varieties and contain higher levels of rutin, a powerful antioxidant.

Now is the time for the 7 day Vasanthothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni Divyadesam and on 8^th June 2019 was day 3.  ‘Vasantham ‘ is a season – a pleasant one at that.  Vasantham corresponds to Spring season.  While they have only 4 seasons in the West, we have six seasons.  Here it is Vasantha Ruthu also known as ‘Ilavenil’. Spring is the season of new beginnings. Fresh buds bloom, animals awaken and the earth seems to come to life again. Farmers and gardeners plant their seeds and temperatures slowly rise. The timing of these changes varies depending upon location. Animals that spent the winter in hibernation come out of their dens, while those that travelled to warmer regions return. Many animals give birth in the spring.

There existed a bungalow known as Vasantha Uthsava Bungalow  in Venkatrangam Street abound with many trees, fragrant flowers, ponds and a big well [nadai bavi kinaru] which had steps for getting inside.  All that is gone.  Till a few years back, Sri Parthasarathi Perumal used to visit this Vasantha Uthsava Bungalow in the morning and ‘thirumanjanam’ would be performed there.  In the evening, He would return.   In the year 2004, after Samprokshanam,  when Perumal was to visit here on the 4th day, it was found that the promenade deck had been razed to the ground and a pandal erected.  On the 7^th  day of the Uthsavam ~ kuthirai vahana purappadu, Sri Parthasarathi did not go inside the bungalow and sadly never after that.  Now it is only ‘ mada veedhi’ purappadu sans kulakkarai even. 

For us living in hot Chennai – there is no confusion – rain whenever it comes is most welcome - ~ and for us there is always the great darshan of Sri Parthasarathi and Vasantha Uthsavam gives it bountiful .. every evening there is grand purappadu with Sri Parthasarathi adorning different crowns .. .. and we pray Him with the divine renderings of Alwars.  On day 3 – obvious it was Moonram Thiruvanthathi of Sri Peyalwar. 

ஆழ்வார் பாடல்களிலே தமிழும், அற்புத உரையும், பக்தியும் கமழும்.  பேயாழ்வார் இடைகழியில் மற்ற இருவர் ஏற்றிய விளக்கினிலே பெருமாளை சேவித்து 'திருக்கண்டேன் பொன்மேனி கண்டேன்' என இசைத்தவர்.  அவரது வரிகள் இங்கே :  நாம் கண்ணுறும் சாதாரண விளக்குகள் எ ண்ணெய் திரி போன்றன  சேர்க்கையினால் அழுக்கேறுதலுண்டு, ஞானமாகிற விளக்கு அங்ஙனன்றியே நிர்மலமாயிருக்கும் 

உய்த்துணர்வென்னும் ஒளிகொள் விளக்கேற்றி,

வைத்தவனை நாடி வலைப்படுத்தேன், - மெத்தெனவே

நின்றானிருந்தான் கிடந்தானென்னெஞ்சத்து,

பொன்றாமை மாயன் புகுந்து,

மனத்தினாலும் அறிவினாலும் உய்ந்து உணர்ந்த விவேக உணர்ச்சி எனும் மாசற்ற தீபத்தை ஏற்றி, ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயனான எம்பெருமானை தனது இதயத்திலே வலைப்படுத்தி தனதாக்கிக்கொண்டால், அவ்வெம்பெருமான் குறை ஒன்றுமில்லாமல்  ஹ்ருதயத்திலே குடி புகுந்து, அமைதியாக, முதலில் நின்று, சற்று பிறகு,   வீற்றிருந்து அதன் பிறகு அங்கேயே  பள்ளிகொண்டருளினான் ~ என்கிறார் தமிழ் தலைவன் பேயாழ்வார்.

Sri Vaishnava Sampradhayam places great emphasis on following the path shown by Acharyan.  Our  Sampradhayam is proud of the rich lineage of greatest of Acharyas who have guided us towards salvation.  One can easily discern from the  Great ‘Thaniyan’ of Swami Koorathazhwaan that we observe daily - “Lakshminatha samarambaam, Nathayamuna madhyamam – Asmath Achaarya paryanthaam, vanthe Guru parambaram”. 

For a  Srivaishnavaite, Acharyar leads and guides one to ultimate  Sriman Narayana. My Acharyar  is Cholasimhapuram Doddayachaaryar (presently Sri U. Ve. Kovil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Singarachaar Swamy).   We the Sishyas of Swami belong to the lineage, which emanated from the Holy feet of Sri Periya Perumal, Periya Pirattiar, Senai Muthalvar, Nammazhwar, Naathamunigal, Uyyakkondar, Manakkal Nambigal, Aalavanthar, Periya Nambi, Emperumaanar, Koorathazhwar, Mudaliandan, Embaar, Battar, Nanjeeyar, Nampillai,  Vadakku Thiruveethipillai, Pillai Logachariyar, Thiruvoimozhipillai, Maanavala Maamunigal, Vaanamamalai Jeeyar to  Doddacharyar (of whose lineage we have the present head – Sri Singarachaaryar Swami).

நம் ஸ்ரீவைணவ சம்பிரதாயத்தின் அடிப்படையே - ஆசார்யர்கள் தான்.  பெரிய பெருமாள்; ஸ்ரீரங்க நாச்சியார், சேனை முதல்வர், நம்மாழ்வார், நாதமுனிகள், உய்யக்கொண்டார், மணக்கால் நம்பிகள், ஆளவந்தார், பெரிய நம்பி, எம்பெருமானார் இராமானுசர், கூரத்தாழ்வான், முதலியாண்டான், எம்பார், பட்டர், நஞ்சீயர், நம்பிள்ளை, பிள்ளை லோகாச்சார், திருவாய்மொழிப்பிள்ளை, பெரிய ஜீயர் எனும் நம் மணவாள மாமுனிகள், வானமாமலை ஜீயர் சுவாமி,  தொட்டையங்காரப்பை சுவாமி, சண்டமாருதம் சுவாமி எனும் பெரிய சுவாமி தொட்டையாச்சர் என எங்கள் ஆச்சார்யர் குலம் நீள்கிறது.  பெரியப்பங்கார் ஸ்வாமிக்கு பிறகு அவரது திருக்குமாரர் ஸ்ரீ கோயில் கந்தாடை சண்ட  மாருதம் ஸ்ரீ சிங்கராச்சார் சுவாமி வர்த்தமான ஆசார்யர் ஆவார்.  இன்று ஸ்ரீ கோயில் கந்தாடை சண்ட மாருதம் பெரியப்பங்கார் ஸ்வாமி திருநக்ஷத்திரம் அவரது சிஷ்யர்களான அடியோங்களால் திருவல்லிக்கேணி ஸ்ரீயதுகிரி யதிராஜ மடத்தில் விமர்சையாக கொண்டாடப்பட்டது.

சில நூறாண்டுகள்  முன்பு நம் சுவாமி திருவம்சத்தில் ஸ்வாமி தொட்டாச்சார்யார் என்பவர் அக்காரக்கனியாக (இனிப்புச் சுவையுடைய பழம் போன்ற) போற்றப்படும் ஸ்ரீ யோகநரசிம்மருக்குப் பூஜைகள் செய்துவந்தார். பெருமாளிடம் பக்தி கொண்ட அவர் ஆண்டுதோறும் காஞ்சிபுரம் வரதராஜப் பெருமாள் கோவிலில் பிரம்மோற்சவத்திற்குச் சென்று பெருமாளைத் தரிசிப்பது வழக்கம். ஒரு முறை அவரால்  பிரம்மோற்சவத்திற்குச் செல்ல இயலவில்லை. மூன்றாம் நாள் கருட சேவை உற்சவத்தன்று ஸ்வாமி தொட்டாச்சார்யார் சோளசிம்மபுரம் என்ற தற்போதைய சோளிங்கரில் இருந்தவாறே  'ஸ்ரீ தேவராஜ  பஞ்சகம்' எனும்  ஐந்து ஸ்லோகங்களைப் பாடினார். இதே நேரத்தில் காஞ்சியில் வரதராஜப் பெருமாள் கருட வாகனரூபமாகத் திருவீதி உலா செல்வதற்காகக் கோயில் வாயிலுக்கு வந்தார். சோளிங்கரில் இந்த ஐந்து சுலோகங்களைப் பாடி முடிக்கவும், காஞ்சியில் கோயில் வாயிற் கதவு மூடிக்கொள்ளவும் சரியாக இருந்தது.

மூடிய கதவுகளுக்குப் பின்னால் கருட சேவையில் இருந்த பெருமாள் அப்படியே சோளசிம்மபுரத்துக்கு  எழுந்தருளி தொட்டாச்சார்யாருக்குக் காட்சி கொடுத்தார். இன்றும் இது  **ஸ்வாமி தொட்டாச்சார்யார் சேவை** என்று காஞ்சியில் வழங்கப்படுகிறது. சோளிங்கபுரத்தில் காட்சி அளித்த பெருமாள், தக்கான் குளக்கரையில் கருட சேவையிலேயே கோவில் கொண்டுள்ளார்.  அத்தகைய சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த திருவம்சத்திலே அவதரித்தவர் நம் ஆசார்யர். இன்று அவர் எழுந்து அருளி இருந்து நமக்கு அருளியது நம் பெரும் பாக்கியம்.

Understand that there were 5 Thirumaligais of the lineage of Doddacharyar  earlier.  Presently there are only two - the family of Swami Periyappangar Swami - of whose lineage is our varthamana Acharyar - Sri Ubhaya Vedantha Kovil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Singarachar Swamy;  the other is that of Swami Vedanthachaar.

Today 8^th June 2019,   is  a great day for the sishyas as the  Thirunakshathiram of Sri U.Ve. KKCP Periyappangar Swami was celebrated at Sri Yathugiri Yathiraja  Mutt, Triplicane.  Our Varthamana Swami -  Sri KKCP Singarachar swami descended at Thiruvallikkeni  and hundreds of sishyas and members of ‘Sri Koil Kandadai Chandamarutham Periyappangar Swami Sishya Sabha’ gathered  to get the blessings of Acharyar.   

Tracing back our lineage,  Swami Sri Doddachar was born in 1543 in the famous lineage of Swami Mudaliandan.  In this Kaliyuga, we know that Thirukachi Arulalar directly conversed with Acharyan Thirukachi Nambigal  … and centuries later,  Sri Devathirajar had direct interaction with our Doddacharyar Swami too.  The most famous amongst the  brahmothsavam is the  Garuda Sevai – at Thirukachi,  Lord Devapperumal is taken in procession on vahanam of Garuda also known as Periya Thiruvadi.  Garuda Seva has special significance not only for Kanchi, more so for Sholinghur because of Swami Doddachaaryar connection.  Swami Doddayachar was an ardent devotee of Lord Varadharaja and did many kainkaryams to Him. He was a regular in the annual Vaikasi Garuda Sevai of Devathirajar. Legend has it that on a particular year, he was not well and could not attend the Garudothsavam at Kachi. He was feeling desperate about his misfortune of not being able to have darshan of PerArulalar at Kachi on Garuda vahanam. He lamented standing near the Thakkan kulam at Cholasimhapuram (Sholinghur]. He composed hymns on Lord Varadharaja, known as Sri Devaraja Panchakam. He longed for the Lord's sevai and these outpourings were a direct result.

In the Devaraja Panchakam, Acharyan [Doddachaaryar] sings that .’Lord Varadarajan is radiant on the back of Garudan --the son of Vinathai—and is flanked on both sides by the twin sets of white umbrellas and Kavari deer tail chamarams (fans). His sacred, lotus-soft right hand is held in abhaya mudhra pose assuring all that He will free them from all their fears. His beautiful lotus-like eyes rain anugraham on all the beholders. Adiyen salutes always that Sarva Mangala Moorthy emerging out of His aasthaanam through the western gopuram on the third day of His Vaikasi Brahmothsavam.

Emperuman will never let his ardent bhaktha down. He came down to Sholinghur and gave darshan to Doddacharyar - seated on Garuda vahanam. Such is the mercy and leela vinotham of PerArulalar. Continuing as it does, on every  Vaikasi Garudothsavam day, there is a tradition known as Doddachaaryar Sevai, when the archakas hide Lord Varadar at the western gate for a short time with divine white umbrellas (ven thirukudai) just before He leaves the temple.  It is believed that Lord goes to Sholinghur for giving darshan to Doddacharyar. The mangala harathi takes place thereafter.

We are proud to follow the lineage of  Doddacharyar and follow the footsteps of our Acharyan - Sri U Ve Koil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Singarachaar Swami. Here is the thanian of our Varthamana Swami….

 This morning at Thiruvallikkeni,  there was Thirupallandu, Thirupavai, Thirumozhi pasuram of Singavelkunram, Thiruvallikkeni & Thirukadigai;  Kovil Thiruvaimozhi, Sri Ramanuja Noorranthathi and Upadesa Rathinamalai goshti.  Panchasamskaram  was performed for some sishyas of our sect.  Here are some photos taken during the festivities at Yadugiri Yathiraja  Mutt.   We were too fortunate to have Perumal theertham and Sripada theertham of our Acharyan and  darshan of ‘Thiruvaradhana Perumal – Kannan’ of our Swami.  With his kind permission, photo of Lord Krishna who gets daily pooja of our Acharyar is also posted here.
