Hanumantha vahanam at Thiruvanparisaram divyadesam 2019

Today 13.4.2019 is Sri Rama Navami ~ and in the evening there would be purappadu of Sri Rama in Hanumantha vahanam at many divyadesams.  Here is a divyadesa perumal on Hanumantha vahanam .. ..  I have recently posted about this divyadesam ‘Thiruvanparisaram’ – as could be seen from the photos, the vahanams here are much different that what we see in Thondamandalam.

The photo at the start is that of ‘Thiruvazh marban’ of Thirupathisaram i.e.,  Thiruvanparisaram – the divyadesam.  There is a huge tank in front of the temple.  The temple is in Kerala style of architecture.  Though it has a big door, a smaller door only was found open at the time of our visit.  Nammazhwaar has sung about this Lord in Thiruvaimozhi {8-3-7 (3475)}.  Udaya Nangai, mother of Swami Nammazhwaar hailed from this place and it is believed that Udaya Nangai underwent 41 days penance before the Lord here and conceived Nammazhwaar. The idol of the chief deity is 9 feet tall and made specially of Katusarkara Yogam (Mustard and Jaggery paste).  There will be no thirumanjanam for the moolavar for this reason.  There are paintings on the walls inside.

13th Apr 2019   is the holy day of Sree Rama Navami – the day on which Lord Sri Ramachandramurthi,  the supreme avatar of Maryada Purush  was born in the blessed land of Ayodhya.  Lord Rama descended on earth for the purpose of upholding righteousness and rewarding virtue.

Sage Valmiki,  -   the most eloquent of men enquired Sri Narada –  ‘Who is there in the World today, endowed with excellent & heroic qualities, versed in all duties of life, truthful, trustworthy, firm in his vows, benevolent,   learned, handsome, patient,   free from envy & when excited to wrath can strike terror  into the hearts of celestial beings ? ~  and Sage responded thus :

There is only one by name Sri Rama, born in the lineage of Ikshwaku.  He is totally balanced, one in complete control of His words, thoughts and deeds; a man of great valour ~ a person of steadfast character and radiant countenance – Lord Sree Rama

His great qualities are such that noble persons all over the World are drawn to Him like rivers finding their way to the Ocean.  He conducts himself equably all the time and he is extremely charming ! – the great Sri Rama.

Narada muni acquainted with the past, the present and the future, pleased with the words of the Sage Valmiki, answered him saying:- ‘ Rare indeed are those, endowed with the qualities thou hath  enumerated, yet I can tell thee of such a person, born in the lineage of Ikshwaku, renowned, self-controlled, valourous, illustrious, wise, conversant with ethics, code, slayer of foes, broad shouldered, long armed, eminent in archery, noble head, of mighty prowess – known as Sri Rama.   His country, the Kosala Kingdom was replete with happiness.  The only trouble was that nobody could donate ~ for the simple reason that there were none to seek and beget things from others. People lived in such a perfect harmony that there was no fight and there was no opportunity to display valour ~ the subjects were well educated and lived life full of honour… its capital which had no wars was known as ‘Ayodhya’

In that glorious kingdom of Ayodhya – one cannot  see a lustful person,  a miser or a cruel one – as also  nondescripts or non-believers could not be found , for there existed no such persons in the holy land of Dasaratha, to be ruled by Sri Rama.  His birth was extraordinary ~ His father was Emperor Dasaratha – who was well-versed in Veda, was  a gatherer of all scholars, riches and forces as well, a foreseer; esteemed by urbanites and countrymen alike, a top-speeded chariot-warrior among the emperors of Ikshwaku kings, one who performed many Vedic rituals, a virtuous one, a great controller, a saint-like kingly sage,  who was equal to  Indra.  Sriman Narayana,  with all His kindness agreed to incarnate as human and selected King Dasharatha as his father. When Dasharatha  peformed  the Vedic ritual called putrakaameshti,  Praajaapatya purusha arose from the sacrificial fire to give a golden vessel of divine dessert to Dasharatha for distribution among his queens to beget progeny.

The Greatest of Ithihasa purana ‘Sri Ramayanam’  is the undiluted history of the Greatest Person who descended on this Universe, on the banks of river Sarayu, in a prosperous country called ‘Koshala’.  In the immortal Ramayana, there are learning of life ….. For the Universe, Sri Rama and Sita are the Ideal persons.  Sri Rama is all pervading principle of Truth, character, steadfastness, sincerity, valour, skill, correctness, just, compassionate, righteous and more.

~ and there is also a great character – a warrior, mightily powerful, whose body was as hard as a diamond, whose speed equalled those of fastest flying eagles, who possessed great wisdom, who could organize a group of roaming ones, who can jump hundreds of miles, yet who remained at the feet of his Master, totally committed thinking of their welfare alone – unassuming, yet capable of telling the right things at the right moment – that is Pavana Puthra Hanuman – Aanjaneya, ‘thiruvadi’ – bearer of Lord Rama – who carried Rama on his shoulders during the war in which the demon was killed.

On the day of Sri Rama Navami, there will the purappadu of Sri Rama in Hanumantha vahanam later in the evening.  Mere chanting of His name [Sri Rama Namam] will bring us all good things and prosperity.

Meditate again and again the divine name of Rama  - mind gets absorbed in the divine consciousness of Rama, it is transcendental and is capable of relieving all evils, giving us all prosperity.

For this Sri Rama Navami, here are some photos of Sri Rama piran and the dwajarohanam at Kumbakonam.  The city of KUmbakonam is known for its Temples. Among the Srivaishnava temples at the holy sthalam Thirukudanthai  is Ramaswamy Temple – situate nearer Kumbeswarar Kovil.  The temple built by Nayakkar kings has beautiful architecture and has exquisite paintings.  Moolavar here is Lord Rama and consort Sita seated with Lakshmana holding the bow,  Baratha and Satrugna doing service, with Anjaneya worshipping.

Uthsavam for the Maryada Purush ~ Emperor of Kosala Kingdom is now at Thirukudanthai too and on 6.4.2019 in the morning, had the great darshan of Lord Sri Rama with Sita mata and Lakshmana of Sri Ramaswamy Thirukovil.  Here are some photos.

Brahmothsavam at Thiruvanparisaram divyadesam 2019

For a Srivaishnavaite visiting temples and worshipping Lord Mahavishnu in his various forms and avatars is of greatest significance.  The temples on which our Azhwaars have sung in Naalayira Divya Prabandham are collectively known as “108 Divyadesams”.  13 of these are known as ‘malainadu or sera nattu divyadesams.  In general, most are under the impression that all these are in various parts in Kerala.  All these are managed by Malayala  pothis and the way of worship is far different than what we do in Chola and Thondainattu thirupathis.  Many are known by their local names than the names associated in Naalayira divya prabandham.

One such divya desam is “Thiruvanparisaram” – many guidebooks describe the route to this divyadesam from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala.  This in fact is very much in Tamilnadu and lies much closer to Nagercoil.  People regularly visit Kanyakumari for Vivekananda rock and for seeing sun rise and sun set.  You can very easily go to this divyadesam and have darshan of the Lord.  As one travels from Tirunelveli to Kanyakumari – you pass through “Nankuneri aka Vanamamalai – Thirusirivaramangai” – the headquarters of Thennacharya sampradhayam, Thirukurungudi and then traverse the western ghats.  One would find hundreds of Windmills (Wind electricity generators of various makes and sizes) and after Panagudy, Muppandal – you can find Thirupathisaram.  This is around 3 kms closer to Nagercoil and easily accessible. The famous Sthanumalayan temple of Suseendram is also nearer from here (around 7 km)

Thirupathisaram is Thiruvanparisaram – the divyadesam.  There is a huge tank in front of the temple.  The temple is in Kerala style of architecture.  Though it has a big door, a smaller door only was found open at the time of our visit.

The imposing moolavar in sitting posture [Veetru irundha thirukkolam] is Thirukuralappan.  Lord has Lakshmi on his chest and hence known as ‘Thiruvaazh Maarbhan”.  There is  a sannadhi for Nammazhwaar and a Ramar sannadhi inside which Kulasekara azhwar is also there.

Early day renovations were believed to have been carried out by King Kulasekara and Thirumalai Naicker.  The annual Brahmothsavam at this divaydesam (though could be far different than the ones we have here) started on 10.4.2019 – here are some photos thanks to my colleague Mr V Thiruvambalam who hails from this place.  Special thanks are due to Mr Thiruvazhi Velayutham Pillai and Mr Sundar.

Kalinga Narthanam @ Raja Mannargudi ~ Sri Rajagopalaswami 2019

What did Lord Krishna wear as ear-ring ?  ~ :  what was known as : சீலைக் குதம்பை – simple roll of palmyra leaves worn in the ear-lobe to widen the perforation ! .. ..

For us Vedas, and Ithihasapuranams are the most reverred scriptures – ‘the most original’  amongst all our texts to which all spiritual reference is to be drawn.   Sri Ramayana and Mahabaratham are not mere texts but ‘the real story of Lord Maha Vishnu’ during the two most important avatars.   Of the two, Mahabaratham is replete with rich moral stories and life instances.  It extols  the living of Lord Krishna at every stage of his life – right from his birth in prison cell, to moving across river Yamuna during the heavy downpour; to his growth of every stage at Gokulam, his plays at Vrindavan to the Great battle at Gurukshetra and more……….  .. .. and he grew up tending those cattle at Vrindavan & Gokul.

Yasodha is so proud that she calls out to other women asking them to come and see that beautiful Krishna, with  the tucks of his turban covering one ear and a bunch of red glory-lily flowers stuck over the other, wearing a beautiful vesture and a waist cloth over it, hanging a crescent of cool pearls on his chest, the ocean-hued Lord returns with the calves.  She proclaims that none else could have given birth to such a glorious child and so she is very very fortunate !

As He grew up, there were lurking dangers set-up by Asuras.  There was the most dreaded Kaliya  who was threatening everyone at Yamuna and in His exploits,   Lord Krishna jumped into the pond, danced on the hood of deadly snake, thereby turning the lake turbid  - and when Kaliya surrendered, He benevolently favoured him too….

Kulasekhara Azhwar in his Perumal Thirumozhi lists out some of the deeds of Bala Krishna, described as Devaki missing out His deeds -

Around 20 kms away from Thiruvarur, is Mannargudi -  founded as an agraharam village as Rajadhiraja Chaturvedimangalam by the Chola king Rajadhiraja Chola (1018–1054 CE).  At this place is the ancient temple Sri  Rajagopalaswami temple constructed by Kulothunga Chola I.  Successive kings of the Chola empire expanded the temple.  It has a big imposing Gopuram, hall of 1000 pillars, and  big compound wall.  While in Divyadesams, the brahmothsavam is a 10 day festival, at Rajamannargudi, the Panguni brahmothsavam is 18 day long.

On 6th Apr 2019 was fortunate to have darshan of Sri Rajagopalaswami in Kalinga Narthana Thirukolam in pallakku – here are some photos of the purappadu.  Intend posting other photos of the magnificent Rajagopuram, temple and the beautiful elephant Sengamalam in another post !
