Revathi Sri Ranganathar ~ and Perumal at marriage reception

Today is ‘Revathi’ nakshathiram in the month of Avani ~ and there was to be purappadu of Sri Ranganathar.  In someways disappointing as it could not take place due to some asantharpam nearer the Temple premises.   Later attended marriage reception of Sri U Ve Keezhathirumaligai Embar Sinthamani- Parankusa Nambi @ Srinikethan with Sow. Padmavathi @ Divya.

~ astounding words of faith in Muthal Thiruvanthathi.  Poigai Azhwar speaks of Lord Krishna who strolled on Earth as a child, drank poison with relish from the breasts of ogress… Alwar proclaims that his hands will salute none other than Him; lips shall not extol anybody else; eyes will not see – other than His form ~ and ears would not hear anything other than the name(s) of Sriman Narayana.

We live – we pray – we go to temples….. in Sri Vaishnavism, in the various forms of God – the one which is easiest and the form in which the Supreme God makes Himself available to us daily is ‘Idol worship’ in Divyadesams and other temples – this is known as ‘Archai’ ~ Archavatharam, where the Supreme Lord Maha Vishnu manifests Himself in various idol forms and comes near us to shower his munificence to us ………..

Felt so happy for there in the marriage reception was this replica of our Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman so delightfully made.

Sri Arayar Sevai at the Holy Sri Villiputhur

In SriVainava Satsampradhayam, great emphasis is on ‘Guru Parampara’ that starts from Sriman Narayana Himself, down to Sri Nathamunigal who has to be remembered ever for what he gave us – *Sri Naalayira Divyaprabandham*.  Sri Nadhamunigal was born in  Anusha nakshatra of ‘Ani’ month at Sri Veeranarayanapuram.   Sri Nathamuni went on a long pilgrimage that took him to holy places  like Mathura, Vrindhavan, and other holy places including Puri.  Back home, upon hearing some Srivaishnavaites reciting Thiruvaimozhi pasuram (that had sort of become extinct ) ‘Aaravamuthe’ and curious to know the rendering in full  ~ he followed its trail that led him to KUmbakonam; Lord Aravamudhan directed him to ThiruKurugoor; with the divine blessings, collated Sri NalayiraDivyaprabandham and thence onwards these hymns are continually sung in  Divyadesams and other Sri Vaishnavaite temples,  Dravida  Veda.

Nathamunigal was also a great Bhakti Yogi and practiced the Yoga of eight accessories ( ashtAnga yoga); he authored the  treatise “Yoga Rahasya”.  He was also an exponent of divine music  who initiated the ‘singing of divyaprabandham ~ now known as ‘Arayar Sevai’. Without this great Acharyar’s efforts in retrieving aruliCheyal,  theVaishnava World would not have got the rich possessions that we have today.  Alavanthar in his SthothraRathinam sings the glories of Nathamunigal in the first 3 slogas.

Sri Vaishnava temples follow the doctrine and practices instituted by our great Acharyar Sri Ramanujar.  In most Divyadesams, one would be impressed by the resplendent splendour of Archavathara Murthies, the garlands and floral decorations, the ornate ornaments, the devoted services of Battars, Veda Adhyapakars rendering Vedas and Divyaprabandhams, the Sripadham thangigal who with mighty devotion take the Lord on their shoulders and there is more…

The “Araiyar Sevai” is unique offering that takes place on certain specific occasions at a few divyadesams – Thiruvarangam, Srivilliputhur, Thirukurugoor [Azhwar Thirunagari], Thirukkannapuram and of course Thirunarayanapuram [Melukote]….  It is bakthi in its purest form – rendered by special people – who sing the verses of Nalayira Divyaprabandham accompanied by abinayam [gesture] with ease.   Araiyars are hereditary and take great effort to preserve their family tradition, descending from the days of Acharyar Nathamunigal…. Sadly, there are not many as over the years we have failed to recognize and take care of their exquisite art totally dedicated to Sriman Narayana.

`Araiyar Sevai’ is the visual enactment of the passionate expression by those in the tradition of Araiyars who have upheld the literature of Iyal, Isai and Natakam.  The Araiyars are not mere dance performers ~ being well versed in Vaishnavaite commentaries possessing great knowledge. Have read that according to ‘Koil Ozhugu’  record book of the Srirangam temple, Thirumangai Azhwar, started the practice of presenting Thirunedun thandakam with the accompaniment of music  before Lord Num Perumal; ages later, Nathamunigal introduced its performance during the Thiruvadhyayana Uthsavam.   His nephews - Keezhai Agathu Azhwar and Melai Agathu became the foremost Araiyars at Srirangam.  According to tradition they were given a cone-like cape “Ariyar Kireedam'' two cymbals and the sacred garlands by the Lord of Srirangam Himself.  The Araiyars first recite the Paasuram, they then explain its inner meaning and finally perform the Abhinaya, a unique art/dance performance with their hands and legs explaining the Paasurams with special musical effect.

I had earlier posted about the committed to and continuing the traditions of Araiyar Sevai  at  Melkote [Thirunarayanapuram] that has a rich legacy and extremely committed people who uphold the traditions and had written something on Sri U.Ve. Arayar Srirama Sharma Swami, an exponent of Arayar tradition. He  received the Certificate of Honour to eminent scholars of Sanskrit, by the then  President of India Mr Pranab Mukherjee in 2014.

Today (2nd Sept 2017) had the fortune of partaking in Thirupallandu, Thiruppavai goshti at Sri Periyalwar sannathi ~ hearing and seeing the ‘thala abinaya composition’ of Sri Villiputhur Arayar Swami – in the lineage of our great Acharyar Nadhamunigal -  Sri Srinivasa Rengan  (the Swamin mentioned in the first para) –, had the fortune of having Arayar Sevai  again in the night when there was rendition of Thiruvaimozhi muthal pathu before Sri Vada Bathra Sayee Emperuman on the occasion of Thiru Pavithrothsavam at Sri Villiputhur.

Sri Parthasarathi Pavithrothsavam : day 5 ~ Muthangi :: 2017

The history of Chennai, is far older than British settlements, the  black town area came to be known as George Town from 1911 in honour of  King George V when he was crowned,  the Emperor of India.  The Western part of George Town is the Muthialpet area, traversed by couple of  roads running from Madras High Court to Clive Battery, nearer Royapuram Railway.   One among the many lanes is  Pavalakkaran Street housing Sri Venugopala Temple.  It was once the place where diamond and coral trade flourished.

The Jews imported corals, both in the form of beads and in rough. The place in Muthialpet where they lived was known as Pagadalpet [Coral-town] dating back to 1700s.   A book titled – ‘The English Gentleman Merchant at Work: Madras and the City of London 1660-1740’ by Soren Mentz, mentions that the financial crisis affecting the English market even ruined some of the private merchants in Madras, through respondentias, as they suffered financial losses when the Captains were declared bankrupt.  After a voyage to Madras in 1721, Captain Martin was declared bankrupt and private merchants like John Adams lost their investment.

Pearls are attractive.  Palliative care is an approach, an ethic, a multi-disciplinary sub-speciality, not just a new element that can be added and stirred into health systems. Pearl jewellery that glitters needs to be taken care of nicely.   Thousands of miles away, two out-of-town jewelry makers who were selling their work at the “Art in the Pearl” festival this weekend in Northwest Portland say someone stole $300,000 of their inventory from the trunk of their car.  It is reported that the woman and her friend  had made a 10-minute stop at a store after the festival closed for the day Saturday. While the pair were in the store, someone opened up their trunk and made off with black jewelry bags containing years’ worth of handmade work,  it is claimed.  The artisan added that some of the stolen items took her weeks to craft -- and that one of the missing necklaces took her more than 200 hours to make. May not be of any interest to us ~ but this dress adorned by Emperuman, made of Pearl [Muthangi] certainly does. On day 5 of annual Pavithrothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni, Emperuman adorned Muthangi.

Thiruvallikkeni ThiruPavithrothsavam 2017

Thiruvallikkeni Sri Parthasarathi Thiru Pavithothsavam - day 2 - 2017.

30th Aug 2017   was the Angurarpanam of Thiru Pavithrothsavam and on Friday, today – 1st Sept 2017 – it was day 2 purappadu  of the  Thirupavithrothsvam at Thiruvallikkeni.

Pavithrotsavam is an annual ritual - the word itself is a derivative from the combination of two words - 'Pavithram (holy) and Uthsavam (Festivity).    This Uthsavam is penitential as also propitiatory  ~ for sure, there is nothing good or bad for the Ultimate Benefactor, the Lord who gracefully blesses in all our endeavours.   It is our own attempt to get rid of the evils that might have been caused by the omissions and commissions in the performance of various rituals throughout the year.

Sriman Narayanan in Sri Vaishnavaite philosophy beholds the Best of everything and cannot in any manner be having anything in short. The festivals are only intended to be error correction [dosha nirvana] of the rituals that we, the humans conduct and fail in some manner.  Lord only accepts them with Divine Grace, blessing us all the time beyond what we deserve.  For a Srivaishnavaite, nothing needs to be done by self as Sriman Narayana with His abundant opulence will shower his blessings and guide us to do kainkaryam to Him.

During this Thiru Pavithrothsavam, yaga salai is constructed and vedic chants made by Thirukovil Battars; alongside homam – there would be arulicheyal as also veda parayanam by Adyapaka goshti.  In the sacred maha Yagnam - aswaththa samith, cow ghee, bilvapatrams - vilva ilai, lotus are used.    The poornahuthi / the conclusion of Thirupavithrothsava Sarrumurai is to  take place on 6th  Sept. 2017.

Let us all have darshan of Sri Parthasarathi, Thirupavithorthsava yagnam and have the Divine Blessings.  Here are some photos taken during today’s  chinna maada veethi purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi Pavithrothsavam day 2.
